marca los tiempos en Marismas Nacionales, entre Nayarit y Sinaloa. Lo saben bien las aves, los pescadores e incluso los ostiones que aqu abundan. Como el pulso a cmara lenta de un gigantesco sistema circulatorio, los extensos entramados de manglares y lagunas se inundan y casi se secan dos veces cada da, con un ritmo constante que se mantiene desde siempre, perpetuado por la fuerza de las mareas. Pero tan importante como la influencia del mar es la aportacin de agua dulce de una de las arterias principales que alimenta estos humedales: el ro San Pedro Mezquital. Desde el altiplano de Durango hasta la costa de Nayarit, el San Pedro Mezquital el ltimo ro que cruza la Sierra Madre Occidental libre de presas recorre 540 kilmetros por territorios casi desconocidos. Within

the National Marshlands between Nayarit and Sinaloa, water keeps time. The birds know it well, as do the fishermen and even the oysters that proliferate here. Like a giant circulatory system in slow motion, twice a day the vast network of mangroves and lagoons floods and almost dries out, with tidal action maintaining the same constant rhythm for all time. Just as important as the seas inuence is the nourishing ow of fresh water into the wetland system from a primary artery: the San Pedro Mezquital River. From the Durango highlands to the coast of Nayarit, the last undammed river through the Western Sierra Madre, the San Pedro Mezquital traverses 540 km of practically unknown territory. Its huge basin covers more than 2.7 million hectares, picking up the runoff from numerous tributary streams to make it the countrys seventh mightiest river. Like other undammed rivers, its flow is highly variable. When rainfall is high, it swells drastically, carrying along everything in its path: flora and fauna, rocks, sediment and valuable nutrients, which nourish the valleys of the lower basin and mouth to form one of the most productive ecosystems in Mexico.

Hoy en da, disfrutar de un ro sano y libre como el San Pedro Mezquital es un verdadero privilegio. Nuestra responsabilidad debe ir ms all de conocerlo y apreciarlo; debemos mantenerlo vivo y conservarlo para las generaciones futuras.

The abundance of different species, such as shrimp and oysters, provides sustenance for the 70,000 inhabitants of the lower basin, and it is the basis for the productivity of the Gulf of California fishing industry. Both the San Pedro Mezquital River and the National Marshlands are treasures of Mexicos natural heritage, and maintenance of their fragile hydrological balance is key to their survival. Nowadays it is truly a privilege to enjoy a pristine, free river like the San Pedro Mezquital.
