AND HOW IT IS WITH THEM Y CÓMO SON ELLOS

V•le become religious, Nos hacemos religiosos,

then we turn from it,
then we are in need and maybe we turn back.
We turn to making money,
then we turn to the moral life,
then we think about money again.
We meet wonderful people, but lose them
in our busyness.
We're, as the saying goes, all over the place.
Steadfastness, it seems,
is more about dogs than a~out us.
One ofthe reasons we love them so much.
después nos alejamos de la fe,
si sentimos necesidad, entonces tal vez regresamos.
Luego volvemos a ganar dinero,
después pasamos a una vida de moralidad
hasta que otra vez nos centramos en el dinero.
Conocemos a gente maravillosa, pero la perdemos

Estamos, como se suele decir, manga por hombro.
La perseverancia, parece
que pertenece más a los perros que a nosotros.
Esa es una de las razones por las que los amamos tanto.

Now through the white orchard my little dog
romps, breaking tl1e new snow
with wild feet.
Running here running there, excited,
hardly able to stop, he leaps, he spins
until the white snow is written upon
in large, exuberant letters,
a long sentence, expressing
the pleasures of the body in this world.
Oh, I could not have said it better
myself.

LA TORMENTA (BE.AR)
Ahora a lo largo del blanco jardín mi pequeño perro
brinca, rompiendo la nieve nueva
con sus pies salvajes.
Corriendo de un lado a otro, excitado, como si fuera el
último paso, salta, da vueltas
hasta que en el blanco de la nieve está escrita
con grandes y exuberantes letras
una frase larga, expresando
los placeres del cuerpo en este mundo.
Oh, yo no podría haberlo dicho mejor.

 HER GRAVE
She would come back, dripping thick water, from the
green bog.
She would fall at my feet, she would draw the black skin
from her gums, in a hideous and wonderful smile-
and I would rub my hands over her pricked ears and
her
cunning elbows,
and I would hug the barrel of her body, amazed at the
unassuming perfect arch of her neck.
It took four of us to carry her into the woods.
We did not think of music, .
but anyway, it began to rain
slowly.
Her wolfish, invitational half-pounce.
Her great and lordly satisfaction at having chased
something.
My great and lordly satisfaction at her splash
of hapiness as she barged
through the pitch pines swiping my face with her
wild, slightly mossy tangue.

Ella regresaría, llena de barro, de la

 THE POETRY TEACHER
The university gave me a new, elegant
classroom to teach in. Only one thing,
they said. You can't bring your dog.
It's in my contract, I said. (I had
made sure of that).
We bargained and I moved to an old
classroom in an old building. Propped
the door open. Kept a bowl of water
in the room. I could hear Ben among
other voices barking, howling in the
distance. Then they would all _arrive-
Ben, his pals, maybe an unknown dog
or two, all of them thirsty and happy.
They drank, they flung themselves clown
among the students. The students loved
it. They all wrote thirsty, happy poems.

LA PROFESORA DE POESÍA
La universidad me dio una nueva y elegante aula
para enseñar. Sólo pusieron una condición,
no podría llevar a mi perro.
Está en mi contrato, dije. (Me aseguré
de ello)
Negociamos y me trasladé a una vieja
clase en un viejo edificio. Apuntalé la puerta
para que no se cerrara y puse un cuenco de agua.
De este modo podría escuchar a Ben ladrando
entre otras voces, aullando en la distancia.
Entonces llegarían:
Ben, sus amigos, quizá uno o dos perros desconocidos,
todos sedientos y felices.
Beberían y se tumbarían en el suelo
entre los alumnos. A ellos les encantaría.
Todos escribirían poemas sedientos y felices.

Our new dog, named far the beloved poet,
ate a book which unfortunately we had
left unguarded.
Fortunately it was the Blzagavad Gita,
ofwhich many copies are available.
Every day now, as Percy grows
into the beauty of his life, we touch
his wild, curly head and say,
"Oh, wisest of little dogs".

PERCY
Nuestro nuevo perro, llamado así en recuerdo
del querido poeta,
se comió un libro que por desgracia habíamos descuidado.
Afortunadamente fue Blzagavad Gita,
del que existen muchas copias disponibles.
Ahora cada día, a medida que Percy
avanza hacia la belleza de su vida

vVhat do you say, Percy? I am thinking
of sitting out on the sand to watch
the moon rise. It's full tonight.
So we go
and the moon rises, so beautiful it
makes me shudder, makes me think about
time and space, makes me take
measure of myself: one iota
pondering heaven. Thus we sit, myself
thinking how grateful I am for the moon's
perfect beauty and also, oh! ñow rich
it is to love the world. Percy, meanwhile,
leans against me and gazes up into
my face. As thought I were just as wonderful
as the perfect moon.

LA DULZURA DE LOS PERROS
¿Qué dices, Percy? Estoy pensando
en sentarme en la arena para ver
la salida de la luna. Será llena esta noche.
Así que vamos
y la luna sale, tan hermosa
que me estremece y me hace pensar
sobre el tiempo y el espacio, y me hace tomar
la medida de mí misma: un ápice
en comparación con el cielo. Así que nos sentamos,

I AM DOING TAXES
First of all, I do not want to be doing this.
Second of all, Perce does not want me
to be doing this,
bent over the desk like a besieged person
with a dull pencil and innumerable lists
ofnumbers.
Outside the water is blue, the sky is clear,
the tide rising.
Percy, I say, this has to be done. This is
essential. l'll be finished eventually.
"Keep me in your thoughts", he replies. 'Just because
I can't count to ten doesn't mean
I don't remember yesterday, or anticipate today.
1'11 give you ten more minutes", and he does.
Then shouts -who could resist- his
favorite words: Let's gol

PERCY HABLA MIENTRAS
HAGO LA DECLARACIÓN DE IMPUESTOS
En primer lugar, no quiero estar haciendo esto.
En segundo lugar, Percy no quiere que yo
esté haciendo esto,
inclinada sobre el escritorio como una persona
asediada con un estúpido lápiz e innumerables listas
de números.
Afuera el agua es azul, el cielo es claro,
la marea creciente.
Percy, le digo, esto hay que hacerlo. Es importante.
Lo voy a terminar.
"Mantenme en tus pensamientos", responde. "Sólo porque
no pueda contar hasta diez no significa
que no recuerde el día de ayer o antes de ayer.
Te daré diez minutos más", y eso hace.
Entonces grita -quién podría resistirse-
ª su palabra favorita: iVamos!
