PLANEACIÓN Y ENTRENAMIENTO
Entrenamiento con
Vehículos Operados
Remotamente (ROV)
Desde el año 2018, la Armada Nacio-
nal de Colombia cuenta con la capacidad
robótica submarina ROV, mediante un
vehículo de operación remota capaz de
operar hasta 300 metros de profundidad.
Esta capacidad fue fortalecida con la ad-
quisición de sensores acústicos capaces
de realizar registros tridimensionales del
fondo marino.
Estos equipos fueron fundamentales
para el entrenamiento de los pilotos que
participaron de la Campaña, al fortalecer
las capacidades del personal y estandari-
zar los protocolos de operación esencia-
les para la fotogrametría.
Maniobras
seguras
La investigación científica en
medios marinos conlleva riesgos
propios de operaciones en el mar
asociados al despliegue y recupera-
ción de equipos. Guayas y cableado
en operaciones sobre cubierta son
susceptibles de sufrir atascamien-
to, corrosión y exposición a altas
temperaturas, entre otros riesgos.
En la fotografía, profesionales
de la Armada Nacional de Colom-
bia realizan labores de amarre y
aseguramiento de guayas para el
despliegue de los transductores

namiento del ROV.
Safe
maneuvers
Scientific research in marine
environments implies risks rela-
ted to offshore operations, such as
those regarding the deployment
and recovery of equipment. Wires
and cables in operations on deck
are susceptible to jamming, co-
rrosion, exposure to high tempe-
ratures, among other hazards. In

Vida cotidiana

En la ruta que cubría el Galeón
San José hacia Cartagena transpor-
taba carga del fisco real, mercancías
y pertenencias de los aproximada-
mente 600 pasajeros y tripulantes
a bordo.
En la fotografía se observa lo que
podría ser un accesorio suntuoso
de uso personal, elaborado en oro,
ubicado junto a botellas holandesas
de tipo cajón. En estas botellas se
encuentran pequeños bivalvos que
por medio de filamentos se adhie-
ren a la superficie, resistiendo así
las corrientes del mar.
Transporte de productos
comerciales y cotidianos
A bordo de una embarcación transatlánti-
ca es común encontrar múltiples recipientes
de distintos materiales, dimensiones y formas
asociados al transporte de bienes y productos.
Por ende, en muchos sitios arqueológicos su-
mergidos asociados a naufragios se suelen ob-
servar recipientes cerámicos de distintos tipos
y funcionalidades.
transportaba.
Transporting of trading
and everyday products
Aboard a transatlantic vessel, it’s common
to find several bowls made made from different
materials, sizes and shapes, all meant to trans-
port goods and products. Therefore, in plen-
ty underwater archaeological sites related to
shipwrecks, you can see several ceramic bowls
with different types and functions.
Right next to one of the San José Galleon’s
cannons, a somewhat large, broken ceramic
piece can be seen, partially buried. On the sedi-
ments next to the piece, there´s a lighter shade.
This may suggest the existence of fragments of
a product that this bowl may have been trans-

Conectando a
Oriente y a Occidente
La cerámica oriental en la fotografía
corresponde posiblemente a un periodo
de producción cerámica fina de tipo mo-
nocromo, cuyo fondo es de color blanco
con decoraciones en color azul cobalto.
Esta decoración se elaboró a partir del
jaspeado, es decir, mediante la técnica
de pulverizar y soplar la pintura sobre
la pieza.
La porcelana del periodo Kangxi
suele estar adornada con flora y fauna,
escenas de la Corte, escenas de jardines,
de batallas históricas e incluso drago-

The eastern-like pottery featured in
the photograph is from a period nota-
ble for monochrome designs, with whi-
te backgrounds and cobalt-blue deco-
rations. This decoration was made with
a technique known as marbling, which
consisted of spraying and blowing paint
onto the piece. Kangxi-period porce-
lain often features designs with flora
and fauna, court scenes, garden scenes,
historical battle scenes and even dra-
gons. At the archaeological site of the

Los escudos

En el Galeón San José podían
contarse 64 bocas o cañones de
bronce de variado calibre, según
fuentes documentales. Estos con-
tienen testimonios precisos como
marcas, sellos, escudos, fechas,
lugares de fabricación, entre otros
datos que se convierten en infor-
mación valiosa para comprender
la industria metalúrgica de la épo-
ca, la batalla naval y el naufragio
mismo.
En la fotografía resaltan tres
escudos de armas ubicados sobre
la caña del cañón. Uno de ellos aso-
ciado al rey Carlos II de España.
Cañones de Sevilla
Hacia finales del siglo XVII el
cañón de bronce era el más utili-
zado y también el más costoso de
fabricar, comparándolo con el ca-
ñón de hierro.
Podían ser fabricados con una
gran diversidad de modelos y ca-
racterísticas, ya que cada fundidor
establecía sus propios parámetros
(longitud, espesor de los metales,
calibres, identificaciones, etc.).
En algunos de los cañones del
BIC Galeón San José aún se ob-
servan parte de las inscripciones
como el lugar de fundición (Sevi-
lla) y de manera borrosa la posible
fecha de fundición (1665 o 1688).
Cannons of Seville
Towards the end of the 17th
century, the bronze cannon was
the most used and most expensi-
ve to manufacture (relative to the
iron cannon). They could be built
with a great diversity of models and
characteristics, since each smelter
had its own parameters (length,
thickness of the metals, calibers,
identifications, etc.). Inscriptions
such as the place of casting (Sevi-
lle) can still be seen on some of the
cannons of the San José Galleon.
Another, somewhat blurry engra-
ving, could be the possible date of
casting (1665 or 1688). 119

Artillería a bordo:

Traces of faith
Religious life was of utmost importance to the naval
world of the hispanic colonial period, to the point that the
names of the Galleons that led the Indies race (the Carrera
de Indias) made reference to two Catholic saints: the San
José Galleon (the captain ship) and the San Joaquín Ga-
lleon (the admiral ship). The daily life aboard the San José
was permeated by religious life, and, accordingly, there
was a priest or chaplain in charge of religious services: his
name was Don Joséph de Belmori. In the remains of the
San José Galleon there are some elements associated with
these rituals such as a chalice, a paten and a benditera.
