The Odyssey
The Odyssey
Cicones, sacking the city, killing the men, enslaving the women, and enjoying rich
loot. The Cicones gather reinforcements, defeat the Greeks. Ulysses and his men
retreat by sea. The storms deflect ships from their course, but eventually they reach
the land of the lotus eaters. The inhabitants are not hostile; However, eating the
lotus plant makes Ulysses' men lose their memory and all the desire to return home.
Ulysses barely returns them to the sea. The next stop is the land of the Cyclops,
one-eyed lawless giants. One of them, Polyphemus, traps Ulysses and a group of
explorers in his cave. Only the cunning plan of the Greek hero allows escape.
