To Express Agreement and Disagreement
To Express Agreement and Disagreement
• OK/Vale: OK
• En efecto: Indeed
• Evidentemente: Evidently
• Lógico: Logically
• No es que lo vea mal, pero…: It’s not that I think it’s terrible, but…
To disagree:
• No estoy de acuerdo: I disagree
Using Tampoco does not express disagreement, but instead a negative agreement. Let’s look at
some examples.
No quiero ir a la playa hoy. (I don’t want to go to the beach today.)
No necesito más tiempo, gracias. (I don’t need any more time, thanks.)
● Add another personal pronoun, name, or person before tampoco to talk about someone’s
interests.
Tampoco quiero ir a la playa hoy. (I don’t want to go to the beach today either.)
También is similar to tampoco, but it is used to agree to positive statements. Let’s look at
the same sentences as above, but in the affirmative.
Necesito más tiempo, por favor. (I need any more time, please.)
● Add another personal pronoun, name, or person before también to talk about someone’s
interests.
When responding to statements with gustar, tampoco and también actually take on a slightly
different form.
Ejemplo
In these examples, the response of agreement uses a mí before también/tampoco. This phrase is not
optional and cannot be replaced by yo or another subject pronoun.
You can’t use other people’s names or other subject pronouns with this phrase or in place of it.
If you want to talk about other people’s likes or dislikes, use the following phrases:
A ti también OR a ti tampoco
A él también OR a él tampoco
This rule applies not only to the verb gustar, but some other pronominal verbs as well. Basically, if
you want to agree with something that happens to you
A nosotros tampoco nos asustan las películas de horror. (Horror movies don’t scare us either.)
Agree to Disagree?
Since both tampoco and también are used to express agreement, what happens when you want to
disagree with someone? It’s actually quite simple! If it’s a positive statement, say yo no to disagree.
Similarly, if it is a negative statement, say yo sí.
However, if the main verb is pronominal (like gustar), replace the yo with a mí.
Agreement: Yo también.
Disagreement: Yo no.
Agreement: Yo tampoco.
Disagreement: Yo sí.
Agreement: A mí también.
Disagreement: A mí no.
Agreement: A mí tampoco.
Disagreement: A mí sí.
