HISTORIA DE LA NAVIDAD EN MEXICO

La Navidad en México, es otra de las celebraciones en la cual se conmemora el nacimiento de

Jesús en Belén. El 25 de diciembre es el día elegido en para celebrar este acontecimiento, y con el
pasar de los años se fue convirtiendo en una tradición familiar en la que todos se reúnen y
comparten algunos alimentos.

¿Cómo surge la navidad en México?

La primera navidad de la que se tiene registro en México, data de 1526, cuando el Fray Pedro de
Gante -misionero franciscano enviado al país para evangelizar a los indígenas-, le escribe al Rey
Carlos V relatando la forma en que los indígenas llevaban a cabo la celebración. Los Aztecas,
festejaban el nacimiento del Dios de la Guerra Huitzilopochtli, en la que llevaban invitados a sus
hogares para ofrecerles un dulce de amaranto. Y justo como coincidía con las fechas de la
celebración cristiana de Navidad, los indígenas no tardaron en aceptar y adoptar las tradiciones
cristianas.

La tradición de cantar villancicos, nace a partir de los mantos que solían llevan los indígenas en
esas fechas, por lo que fueron modificadas con adornos alusivos a la navidad, mientras que, los
más pequeños fueron disfrazados como ángeles para que fueran ellos los que entonaran estos
típicos cantos navideños.

En México, la costumbre de pedir posada se hace como una representación del peregrinaje por el
que tuvo que pasar María y José.

Debido a las grandes similitudes que existían entre ambas tradiciones, no fue difícil para los
conquistadores introducir sus costumbres con un sentido religioso. Ya con el paso de los años, se
fueron agregando nuevos elementos, así como los adornos y el aclamado Santa Claus.

Christmas in Mexico is another of the celebrations in which the birth of Jesus is celebrated in
Bethlehem. December 25th is the day chosen to celebrate this event, and over the years it has
become a family tradition in which everyone gets together and shares some food.

How did Christmas emerge in Mexico?

The first Christmas known in Mexico, dates from 1526, when Fray Pedro de Gante -Franciscan
missionary sent to the country to evangelize the natives-, wrote to King Carlos V explaining the
way in which the natives celebrated this event. The Aztecs celebrated the birth of the God of War
Huitzilopochtli, in which they brought guests to their homes to offer them an amaranth sweet.
And as it coincided with the dates of the Christian celebration of Christmas, the natives were quick
to accept and adopt the Christian traditions.

The tradition of singing Christmas carols was born from the cloaks that the natives used to wear at
that time, so they were modified with decorations alluding to Christmas, while the children were
disguised as angels singing these typical Christmas songs.

In Mexico, the custom of asking for a posada is done as a representation of the pilgrimage that
María and José had to go through.

Due to the great similarities that existed between both traditions, it was not difficult for the
conquerors to introduce their customs with a religious sense. Over the years, new elements were
added, as well as ornaments and the acclaimed Santa Claus.
