English version:
We were destined, Chesterton tells us, to doubt about ourselves, but «not about
the truth.» He prophesied by noting that the world was on the way to producing
a «race of men mentally too modest to believe in the multiplication table.» But
yes, now people believe in horoscopes, fake news, aberrant opinions of many
«influencers», lies by demagogues, media hoaxes at the service of Anglo-Saxon
economic interests, etc.
This ideology also is based on the nihilism of Federico Nietzsche, that is, on the
transmutation of all values. «Values» and «truths» to the taste of the superman
who has killed God. And if there is no God, everything goes, and if everything
goes, nothing goes: fatal indifference to the profound problem of good and evil.
The relativism that is condensed in the idea that «everything goes because there
is nothing that is true or good», nourishes the myth of post-truth with its
poison. There is no longer conformity of knowledge with its object as a measure
of the truth, Hume’s emotivism now governs, which «affirms that morality is
not a rational principle, but happiness or sadness…».
According to the post-truth hoax, everyone has their own idea of the value or
disvalueof things, regardless of what they really are and are worth. «Appealing
to the truth is not synonymous with knowing oneself in possession of it, but
rather in sincere search», a sensible thinker has said. Duty is solidly grounded
in the truth of being, in substantive conceptions of personality and society, as
Unger says, «in proper relation to property, liberty, and community life», not in
gelatinous subjectivities, in emotional swamps, in fashionable sexual whims
outside the natural order.
In the political field, post-truth breaks the link between politics, on the one
hand, and justice and freedoms as the core of the law, on the other, emptying
politics of any fully human meaning. Thus, the strong, without any scruple,
devours everyone, like so many in past and recent history, especially in today’s
tartuffeous West that revolves around the decadent Anglo-Saxon empire, which
pretends to be very democratic but exploits so many, specially the weaks.
If politics is not at the service of the common good, of solidarity, then, without
limits set forth by law, it becomes mere force, brutal and naked power, an
instrument of rogues, of factious groups that serve themselves to ruin the
peoples. All power without limits is a dictatorship, of different gradations, but a
dictatorship nonetheless.
The supposed post-truth is a sworn enemy of reason. «The whole modern world
is at war with reason; and the tower already falters,» Chesterton commented
more than a hundred years ago. Today the tower lies on the ground, in the dust
of human stupidity that believes in everything that is ideological junk, except in
the essential.
Human pride is free to destroy itself, to fall into the pit of stupidity. Faced with
this fraudulent ideology of post-truth, is the demand to repudiate the abysses of
relativism, nihilism, and emotivism in order to go out again to seek the truth,
the essence, the root of things, of people, of the community, of oneself. The
world today imitates Pilate, when with a question he mocked, with impunity, the
Truth. «If relativism were true, we could never discover that it was so,» says the
philosopher Brugger truthfully. The truth makes people free and fair, its denial
sinks, corrupts and enslaves them.
I dedicate this article with great affection to the memory of my dearest, virtuous,
graceful, beautiful sister Lis, who today celebrates one year of having left for the
fortunate encounter with the face of God; and to the memory of my dear cousin,
Jose Antonio Gandara Mendoza, a fine man, a brilliant professional, may God
have mercy upon his soul.
