Las fiestas en el Reino Unido tienen un carácter muy especial atribuido especialmente a la
fuerte identidad nacional de los habitantes.
Asimismo, y como buen país con una importante tradición cultural, son numerosos los
festivales en el Reino Unido, especialmente los vinculados a la música, el cine, el teatro y la
literatura. Entre los más importantes se cuentan la Leeds Internacional Pianoforte
Competition y el Cantante bienal Cardiff de la Competición Mundial. En líneas generales, se
celebran más de 100 festivales en el Reino Unido vinculados a las artes.
Enero
1 de enero: Año Nuevo. En todo el Reino Unido se festaja el comienzo de año entre
amigos y familiares.
2 de enero: Extra festivo de Año Nuevo. En Escocia, el segundo día del año también
se cuenta entre los días no laborables.
Marzo
19 de marzo: San Patricio. La tradicional fiesta de Irlanda del Norte invade todo tipo
de fronteras y es celebrada por los irlandeses en todas partes del mundo. San
patricio, santo patrón de Irlanda, es celebrado tanto por cristiano como por no
cristianos, ya que es más una fiesta vinculada a la identidad nacional, asociada al
color verde y a todo tipo de costumbres irlandesas, que una celebración religiosa.
Se destaca en esta fecha la gastronomía irlandesa, los desfiles y la cerveza
artesanal.
Fecha variable (Marzo- Abril): Regata Cambridge-Oxford. La competición anual de
remo entre las universidades de Oxford y Cambridge se celebra todos los años
para la primavera británica en el río Támesis en Londres. Este evento deportivo
supera ampliamente el interés provocado en las personas vnculadas a las
universidades y se calcula que alrededor de 250 mil personas contemplan la carrera
desde la orilla. Turistas y locales disfrutan del ambiente festivo desde algunos de
los puntos más importantes para ver la regata, como Putney Bridge, Putney
Embankment y Bishops Park para observar la salida; Hammersmith y Barnes a mitad
de la carrera; y Dukes Meadows y Chiswick Bridge desde donde se puede ver la

Fecha variable: Viernes Santo. El viernes de semana santa, según la tradición
cristiana día de la muerte de Cristo, se celebra en el Reino Unido y es establecido
como un día no laborable.
Fecha variable: Lunes de Semana Santa. En Inglaterra, Gales e Irlanda del Norte
también se considera la celebración del primer lunes después de semana santa y es
establecido como un día no laborable.
Fecha variable: Grand National. La competición ecuestre más importante del Reino
Unido es el Grand Nacional. Este tipo de carreras de obstáculos se originaron como
un desprendimiento de la tradición de la caza, ya que los prados abiertos se
encontraban delimitados con cercos que debían saltarse. La primera competición
oficial tuvo lugar en Aintree, cerca de Liverpool, en 1839.

Fecha variable: Festival Internacional de Edimburgo. Las últimas 3 semanas del mes
se celebra el popular Festival Internacional de Edimburgo que convoca, cada año
desde 1947, a músicos, artistas, cantantes y bailarines (Sitio oficial de Festival
Internacional de Edimburgo). El Festival de Edimburgo incluye, a su vez, el Fringe
(Sitio oficial de Fringe), el Festival Cinematográfico Internacional de Edimburgo
(Sitio oficial de Festival Cinematográfico Internacional de Edimburgo), el Festival
de Jazz y Blues de Edimburgo (Sitio oficial de Festival de Jazz y Blues de
Edimburgo), el Festival Internacional del Libro de Edimburgo (Sitio oficial
de Festival Internacional del Libro de Edimburgo) y el Festival de la Gente de
Edimburgo (Sitio oficial de Festival de la Gente de Edimburgo). Además, cada
tarde de agosto el “Edinburgh Military Tattoo” (Sitio oficial de Edinburgh Military
Tatoo) se encuentra ubicado en el Paseo marítimo del Castillo de Edimburgo.
Fecha Variable: Carnaval de Notting Hill (Notting Hill Carnival). El Carnaval de
Nothing Hill es una celebración a la diversidad cultural que cada año invade las
calles con coloridos desfiles, bandas en vivo, música y baile. Establecido en la
década del 60, esta celebración se originó como una respuesta positiva a los recién
llegados inmigrantes del Caribe. Con el tiempo se incorporaron manifestaciones de
otras culturas y novedosos géneros musicales. Actualmente, es el mayor festival
callejero de Europa y recibe miles de visitas (Sitio oficial de Carnaval de Nothing

27 de agosto: Festivo de Verano. En Inglaterra, Gales e Irlanda del Norte se celebra
el comienzo del verano el 27 de agosto.
Último fin de semana de agosto: Carling Weekend. Esta serie comprende los
festivales de música de Reading y Leeds que en las últimas ediciones se fueron
volcando al rock alternativo, el indie, el punk y el metal, entre otros géneros
similares. También cuentan con un sector para presentar artistas menos conocidos
y una carpa de comedia y cabaret. Los festivales son organizados por Mean Fiddler
y se realizan, el de Reading, en Little John's Farm en la Avenida Richfield Avenue, y
el de Leeds, en Bramham Park.

Likewise, and as a good country with an important cultural tradition, there are many
festivals in the United Kingdom, especially those related to music, cinema, theater and
literature. Among the most important are the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition

festivals in the UK.

1 of January New Year. The beginning of the year is celebrated across the UK with
friends and family.
January 2: Extra New Years holiday. In Scotland, the second day of the year is also
counted as non-working days.
March
March 19: Saint Patrick. The traditional holiday of Northern Ireland invades all kinds
of borders and is celebrated by the Irish in all parts of the world. Saint Patrick, the
patron saint of Ireland, is celebrated by both Christians and non-Christians, as it is
more a holiday linked to national identity, associated with the color green and all
kinds of Irish customs, than a religious celebration. Irish gastronomy, parades and
craft beer stand out on this date.
Variable date (March-April): Cambridge-Oxford Regatta. The annual rowing
competition between the universities of Oxford and Cambridge is held every year
for the British spring on the River Thames in London. This sporting event far
exceeds the interest aroused in people linked to universities and it is estimated that
around 250 thousand people watch the race from the shore. Tourists and locals
enjoy the festive atmosphere from some of the most important points to watch the
regatta, such as Putney Bridge, Putney Embankment and Bishops Park to watch the
start; Hammersmith and Barnes mid-race; and Dukes Meadows and Chiswick Bridge

July 12: Battle of the Boyne. In Northern Ireland the Battle of the Boyne is
commemorated, decisive in the framework of the Jacobite War. The deposed King
James II of England and his Jacobite followers were defeated by James' nephew and
son-in-law, William III of England. Both armies were on the banks of the River
Boyne.
August
Variable date: Edinburgh International Festival. The last 3 weeks of the month the
popular Edinburgh International Festival takes place, bringing together, every year
since 1947, musicians, artists, singers and dancers ( Official Site of the Edinburgh
International Festival ). The Edinburgh Festival includes, in turn, the Fringe
( Official Fringe Site ), the Edinburgh International Film Festival (Official Site of the
Edinburgh International Film Festival ), the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival
( Official Site of the Edinburgh Festival). Edinburgh Jazz and Blues ), Edinburgh
International Book Festival (Official Site of Edinburgh International Book Festival)
and the Edinburgh Festival of the People (Official Site of the Edinburgh Festival of
the People ). In addition, every August afternoon the Edinburgh
Military Tattoo is located on the Edinburgh Castle Promenade.
Variable Date: Notting Hill Carnival. The Nothing Hill Carnival is a celebration of
cultural diversity that invades the streets every year with colorful parades, live
bands, music and dancing. Established in the 1960s, this celebration originated as a
positive response to immigrant newcomers from the Caribbean. Over time,
manifestations of other cultures and new musical genres were
incorporated. Currently, it is the largest street festival in Europe and receives

August 27: Summer Holiday. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland the beginning
of summer is celebrated on August 27.
Last weekend of August: Carling Weekend. This series includes the Reading and
Leeds music festivals that in recent editions have turned to alternative rock, indie,
punk and metal, among other similar genres. They also have an area to present
lesser-known artists and a comedy and cabaret tent. The festivals are organized by
Mean Fiddler and take place, the one in Reading, at Little John's Farm on Richfield
Avenue, and the one in Leeds, in Bramham Park.
