Loving their cool hardness in our hands.
By God, the old man could handle a spade-
Just like his old man.
My grandfttther cut more turf in a day
Than any other man on Toner's bog.
Once I carried him milk in a bottle Que ningún otro en la turbera de Toner.
Corked sloppiLy with paper He straightened up Una vez le llevé leche en una botella
To drink it, thenfelL to right away Con un descuidado tapón de papel.

Nicking and slicing neatly, heaving sods Cortando y rebanando con esmero, arrojando terrones
Over his shoulder; going down and down Por encima del hombro, ahondando más y más

The cod smell of potato mould, the squelch and slap El olor frío del mantillo, el chapoteo y el golpe
Of soggy peat, the curt cufs of an edge De Ia turba empapada, los secos cortes del filo
Through living roots a\)aken in my head.
But I've no spade to follow men like them.
