(“Introduction to Feminism”) y 4 (“Introduction to Gender and Queer Studies”)
Lizbeth Goodman: “Madwomen and attics: themes and issues in women’s
desarrollan: “the female malady”, “the domestication of insanity”, “the
First of all it has to be said that the very idea of physical contact in
public was rather abhorrent to the Victorian mentality. In this sense
this image point towards the claiming of sexual freedom and the
questioning of marriage as it was viewed at the time that Shreiner
advocated.
together. In other words, if either men or women take the upper hand
the result will be as sterile as the desert is.
The fact that the dreams occur in a “desert” implies that the values
held by present society are detrimental since in the aridity of the desert

nothing can grow or develop. Hence, it could be argued that the story is
implying the need for change in relation to gender roles and equality.
The symbolism of many of the images present in the text cannot pass
unnoticed. In the story, for instance, it could be mentioned the ants standing
for society or the woman and her horse representing the amazons of a
primeval time. It has to be said here that the story is written at the heyday
of Darwinism. This theory meant, among other things, that there are great
possibilities of predicting the future by looking at the past and studying the
present. Also attention has to be paid to the awakening of this last dream
and the realization that even if nothing has changed as yet, the ants go
home and the horse is there feeding itself, the woman feels sure that the sun
will rise again to a new future that, if we pay attention to what has been
discussed in the Unit in relation to the question of time, is already a present
although we ants, unaware of our similarities, still believe that we are
different.
