Abstract
The huemul (Hippocamelus bisulcus) is an endemic and endangered deer of the Patagonian Andean
forests of Chile and Argentina. The original distribution of the species extended from 34 to 54 degrees South
Latitude. Through this study, we aim to update the existing knowledge of the current distribution of the huemul
by means of the generation of a map in GIS format. Records regarding distribution were obtained on the basis of
information elaborated by López and collaborators, the revision of secondary information, interviews of qualified
informants, the circulation of a survey, and the confirmation of drafts of the map by assistants at two workshops.
Records of presence of the last ten years were incorporated on a grid of squares of 6,400 hectares, on a base map
of the Patagonian region elaborated in ArcView® 3.3. Estimates of the minimum count or abundance of
huemuls was included for each square and a summary was made of them to obtain the number of animals at the
binational level. A subpopulation was defined as a group of squares of confirmed presence that maintained
contact among themselves at either of their sides or ends.
The current northernmost distribution is located in the River Cato of the VIII Region of Chile (36º 40'
S, 71º 28' W); while the southernmost is located in Cape Froward of the XII Region (53º 50' S, 71º 7' W). The
most western records are found to the Southeast of the Isla Wellington, Chile, and the easternmost are located
in the Province of Río Negro (41º 35' S, 71º 11' W), Argentina. The minimum number of huemuls came to
1,048 individuals. One hundred and one subpopulations and 317 squares (2,028,800 hectares.) were registered
within in the potential distribution range of the species. The subpopulations were composed of 3.1 squares
(SD= 6.8, Rango= 1 – 61). The largest population group extends from Lago Azul in Chile to Cerro Greda in
Argentina, while the subpopulations of Chillán had the greatest degree of isolation.
Seventy four of the 101 subpopulations detected were distributed over a reduced surface area,
indicating a significant degree of fragmentation. The greatest number of subpopulations is located in Chile (73
%), while the remaining are distributed binationally (20.0 %) and in Argentina (7.0 %). The squares have a
more equal distribution: 48.6 % in Chile, 37.5 % in Argentina, and 13.9 % binationally. The greatest number of
squares of presence and of subpopulations was recorded in the Region of Aysén and the Province of Chubut, for
Chile and Argentina, respectively. These also have the least degree of protection. This cartographic product,
together with the results obtained, will be a crucial tool for territorial planning and conservation of the species.
