THE WOOD
Types of wood for spoon carving with hand tools
Green wood still has humidity inside, it’s fresh cut wood. Like logs and
branches cut or fallen from trees in a nearby forest or city park.
Ideally must be hardwoods, from slow growing trees which have a dense
structure and fine fibers. The humidity makes it easier to carve.
Dry wood is very hard to carve but hand but Basswood it’s a dense
softwood which is ideal for beginners and to learn how to carve. Even
though it’s dry, it’s very easy to carve.
You can buy Basswood in your local wood supplier or through the internet.
Remember that when buying wood you must check the grain direction of
the piece before you project your spoon design.
