PRETÉRITO IMPERFECTO
Querer (tried to) (or refused if negative) Querer (wanted, had the intention to)

Ejemplo: Yo quise aprender francés Ejemplo: Yo quería aprender francés

I tried to learn French I wanted to learn French.
No querer (refused) No querer (didn´t want, to not want to)

Ejemplo: María no quiso comprar la casa. Ejemplo: Pedro no quería comprar la casa.
María refused to buy the house. Pedro didn´t want to buy the house.
Conocer (met, to meet, got to know for the Conocer (knew, previously knew for some
first time) time)(people, places)

Ejemplos: La conocí en la escuela. Ejemplos: Conocía bien a Juanita.

I met her at school I knew Juanita well
Saber (found out, learned, found out at a Saber (knew, had knowledge for some
specific point) time)

Ejemplo: En ese momento supe la verdad. Ejemplo: Sabía que algo estaba mal.
At that moment I found out the truth. I knew something was wrong.
Poder (succeeded, managed to) Poder (Was able, could, had the ability to)

Ejemplo: Pude llegar a tiempo. Ejemplo: Él podía leer cuando tenía 4

I managed to arrive on time años.
He could read when he was 4 years old.
Tener (received, got) Tener (used to have)
Tener que + Infinitivo- I had to, and I did.
Tuve que hacer la tarea. Tenía tres casas. I used to have 3 houses.

Explicación Hay – Había – hubo.

Imperfect Tense of “hay” = “había”

The conjugation of “hay” in Imperfect tense is había, which means “there was,
there were”.
Both “there was” and “there were” translate as había, never as “habían”:
Ayer había un chico muy divertido en la fiesta.
Yesterday there was a very fun guy at the party.
Había muchas plantas en mi antigua casa.
There were a lot of plants in my old house.
Había and hubo, are forms of the verb haber and both mean “there was” or “there
were”.
Había is used to describe a situation that existed in the past.
Hubo is used to say that an event took place.
