Reported Speech
Example
He told me: "I saw your father yesterday." Él me dijo: "Vi a tu padre ayer."
Estilo indirecto o Reported speech: consiste en expresar algo dicho antes por alguien, es
decir, en contar lo que alguien dijo acerca de algo. El estilo indirecto en inglés es muy
similar al español, por lo que no tiene gran dificultad para los españoles. Estudia este
ejemplo:
Example
He told me that he had seen my father the day before. Él me dijo que había visto a mi padre
el día anterior.
Veamos a continuación las características principales de cada uno de estos dos estilos:
a. Direct speech
Al citar textualmente lo que alguien dice hemos de emplear las comillas y los signos de
exclamación e interrogación. Observa:
Example
Sam told Lewis: "I bought a new car last week." Sam le dijo a Lewis: "Compré un coche
nuevo la semana pasada."
Example
Alice said: "He is very tired today." Alice dijo: "Él está muy cansado hoy."
b. Reported speech
https://aulasfp2021.castillalamancha.es/blocks/recopila/view.php?id=91191 3/44
24/10/2020 eXe
Example
Sam told Lewis that he had bought a new car the week before. Sam le dijo a Lewis que él
había comprado un coche nuevo la semana anterior.
La oración no se inicia con mayúscula, salvo cuando es un nombre propio. Estudia este
ejemplo:
Example
Alice said that he was very tired that day. Alice dijo que él estaba muy cansado aquel día.
Examples
Mark told Mary that he would send her some money. Mark le dijo a Mary que él la enviaría algo
de dinero.
Alice said that her house was beautiful. Alice dijo que su casa era bonita.
En el estilo indirecto los tiempos verbales usados dan un "salto hacia atrás" y cambian
con respecto al usado en el estilo directo. Observa este ejemplo:
Examples
Charles said that he worked in Rome. Charles dijo que él trabajaba en Roma.
Como puedes comprobar el present simple del estilo directo ("work") pasa a past simple del
estilo indirecto ("worked").
Example
Charles says: "I work in Rome." Charles dice: "Yo trabajo en Roma."
Charles says that he works in Rome. Charles dice que él trabaja en Roma.
Este "salto hacia atrás" en el estilo indirecto puede no darse si hablamos de una verdad
permanente. Observa:
Example
Charles pointed out: "Madrid is the capital of Spain." Charles indicó/señaló: "Madrid es la
capital de España."
Charles pointed out that Madrid is the capital of Spain. Charles indicó/señaló que Madrid es la
capital de España.

a. Verbos introductores.
https://aulasfp2021.castillalamancha.es/blocks/recopila/view.php?id=91191 9/44
24/10/2020 eXe
Las "statements" son oraciones afirmativas y negativas. El verbo introductor en los estilos
directo e indirecto suele ser "say". En el estilo directo, cuando el verbo va seguido por un
complemento objeto se puede usar "say to" o "tell". Observa:
Examples
She told us: "I like Madrid." Ella nos dijo: "Me gusta Madrid."
En estilo indirecto estas oraciones solo podrían ser de esta manera. Mira los ejemplos:
Examples
He told me that his name was Fred. Él me dijo que su nombre era Fred.
She told us that she liked Madrid. Ella nos dijo que le gustaba Madrid.
Example
Detrás de say y tell se puede omitir "that". Otros verbos que se pueden usar son think (pensar),
explain (explicar), announce (anunciar), complain (quejarse), point out (señalar, indicar), etc.
Salvo con think, en todos los demás "that" no se puede omitir. Observa el ejemplo:
Example
He pointed out that he had very good marks. Él señaló que tuvo notas muy buenas.
Al pasar una statement del estilo directo al indirecto se producen una serie de cambios que
vamos a analizar en la tabla que sigue a este ejemplo:
Examples
Tom told Kate: "You have to study": Tom told Kate (that) she had to study.
Tom told Jane and David: "You have to study": Tom told Jane and David (that) they had to study.
Examples
Tom told Kate: "I like your bike.": Tom told Kate (that) he liked her bike.
Tom told Jane and David: "I want to buy your house.": Tom told Jane and David (that) he wanted
to buy their house.
Otros cambios:
these those
here there

Yes/No question:
Analicemos los cambios producidos al transformar una oración interrogativa Yes/No question a
estilo indirecto:
Wh- question:
No siempre en la oración interrogativa del tipo Wh-question en estilo indirecto hay un sujeto
detrás de la palabra wh- word. Observa este ejemplo:
https://aulasfp2021.castillalamancha.es/blocks/recopila/view.php?id=91191 16/44
24/10/2020 eXe
Example
She told me: "Who is coming tonight?". Ella me dijo: "¿Quién va a venir esta noche?"
She asked me who was coming that night. Ella me preguntó quién iba a venir esa noche.
Como puedes comprobar detrás de "who" va directamente el verbo. Esto ocurre cuando la
pregunta en estilo directo es una subject question, es decir, cuando se trata de una pregunta en
la que la palabra interrogativa es el sujeto de la oración interrogativa.
También se pueden pasar preguntas de estilo indirecto al directo. En este caso habrá que
tomar en consideración los cambios hasta ahora expuestos pero en dirección contraria.

Clauses of Cause
a. Uso
Se utilizan las oraciones causales o clauses of cause para expresar el motivo o razón de una
acción o hecho. La conjunción más frecuente es porque, pero existen otras: Observa los
siguientes ejemplos:
Examples
We were unable to carry out the experiment because the computer was broken. Fuimos
incapaces de llevar a cabo el experimento porque el ordenador estaba roto.
They were allowed to be late as they were old enough. Les dejaron llegar tarde ya que eran
lo bastante mayores.
Since I knew him, we went to a party. Como / puesto que yo lo conocía, fuimos a una fiesta.
Cuando la subordinada causal aparece en primer lugar, va separada de la oración principal por
una coma. En cambio, si la oración principal va al principio, no se pone coma.
b. Estructuras:
Because + oración:
Las oraciones subordinadas causales introducidas por "because" suelen aparecer después de
la oración principal.
Example
He passed the exam because he had studied hard. Él aprobó el examen porque había
estudiado duro.
Example
Because I had to work, I didn't go out with my cousin. Porque tenía que trabajar, yo no salí
con mi primo.
As + oración:
As significa "porque", "como", "ya que". Introduce clauses of cause que suelen aparecer antes
que la oración principal. Observa este ejemplo:
Example
As we were cold, we put on our coats. Como teníamos frío, nos pusimos nuestros abrigos.
También se podría colocar la oración introducida por "as" después de la principal, aunque esto
es más infrequente.
https://aulasfp2021.castillalamancha.es/blocks/recopila/view.php?id=91191 28/44
24/10/2020 eXe
Example
We put on our coats as we were cold. Nos pusimos nuestras chaquetas porque teníamos
frío.
Since + oración:
Since significa "puesto que", "ya que". La oración por él encabezada aparece antes que la
oración principal.
Example
Since they had were on holiday, they went to the cinema. Puesto que estaban de
vacaciones, fueron al cine.
Because of se traduciría por "por", "a causa de", "debido a". Puede ir antes o después de la
oración principal. Si aparece en primer lugar se coloca una coma, si va detrás, no se pone
coma.
Example
Examples
We went to the cinema due to the bad weather. Fuimos al cine por causa del mal tiempo.
Owing to bad weather, we stayed at home. Debido al mal tiempo, nos quedamos en casa.
"Because of", "Due to" y "Owing to" van seguidos por un nombre que puede ir acompañado de
artículo, demostrativo, y que también puede estar precedido por un adjetivo
Structure Example
because + sujeto + verb + I went to a concert because I
... love the music.
As I love pop music, I went to
as + sujeto + verb + ...
a concert.
since + sujeto + verb + ... Since it's hot, we will go out.
because + of + expresión We will go out because of the
sustantiva + ... heat.
due to + expresión
We will go out due to the heat.
sustantiva + ...
owing to + expresión We will go out owing to the
sustantiva + ... heat.

3. He's working until late the report has to be ready by the end of the week.
6. the fact that she got a better offer, she left the company.
7. We will stay another week the fact that we have not finished yet.
Contrast Clauses
Utilizamos las oraciones subordinadas adverbiales concesivas para expresar un contraste entre
dos cosas.
Las oraciones concesivas van introducidas a menudo por conectores tales como:
'although', 'in spite of, o 'though'.
Una oración concesiva necesita una oración principal para formar una oración completa. La
oración concesiva puede ir delante o detrás de la oración principal:
Example
In spite of the heavy rain, the roads weren't closed = The roads weren't closed in spite of
the heavy rain.
A pesar de la intensa lluvia, las carreteras no estaban cerradas = Las carreteras no estaban
cerradas a pesar de la intensa lluvia.
Se usa 'although', 'though' o 'even though' para expresar un contraste entre dos
afirmaciones:
Example
Although he was late, he stopped to buy a sandwich. = He was late, but he stopped to
buy a sandwich.
Aunque llegó tarde, él paró a comprar un sandwich. = Él llegó tarde, pero paró a comprar un
sandwich.
Example

Though he has lived for years in London, he writes in German. Aunque él ha vivido durante
años en Londres, él escribe en Alemán.
I used to love listening to her, even though I could only understand about half of what she
said.
Me solía encantar escucharla, aunque sólo podía entender la mitad de lo que ella decía.
Examples
Though dying of cancer, he painted every day. (Though he was dying of cancer...)
Aunque estaba falleciendo debido al cáncer, él pintaba todos los días.
‘Though' pero no 'although' se puede usar al final de la frase, como adverbio, para decir
que la información de una oración contrasta con la información de la oración anterior:
Example
I eat most dairy products. I'm not keen on yoghurt, though. (NO ...although). Como muchos
productos diarios. Aunque no me entusiasma el yoghurt.
Examples
Extraordinary though it may seem, London had less rain than Rome = Although/Though it
may seem extraordinary...
Aunque pueda parecer extraordinario, Londres tenía menos lluvia que Roma.
I had to accept the fact, improbable though it was =...although it was improbable
Tenía que aceptar el hecho, aunque era improbable.
También podemos indicar contraste mediante el uso de 'Despite' o 'in spite of' + nombre:
Examples
Despite the difference in their ages they were close friends. =Although their ages were
different...
A pesar de la diferencia de edades eran muy amigos.
In spite of his poor health, my father was always cheerful. =Although his health was
poor...
A pesar de su precaria salud, mi padre siempre estaba alegre.
Hay que tener en cuenta que el nombre que vaya detrás de 'in spite of' puede estar a su
vez modificado por una oración de relativo:

'despite the fact that' o 'in spite of the fact that' + oración subordinada.
Examples
Despite the fact that it sounds like science fiction, most of it is technically possible at this
moment.
A pesar del hecho de que parezca ciencia ficción, la mayoría de ésto es técnicamente posible
en este momento.

En este caso, for that reason introduce el resultado o efecto de la acción anterior.
Se puede decir, por lo tanto, que estos dos tipos de conectores están relacionados, porque
unos, los de causa, introducen la razón y otros, los de resultado o efecto, la consecuencia.
