2. INTRODUCCIÓN.
Vamos a considerar algunos conceptos básicos que los encontraremos en el texto English Please 1, en
las páginas 16-27
A identificar vocabulario básico en inglés relacionado con los miembros de la familia.
Finalmente aprenderemos a utilizar correctamente el verbo ser o estar en sus tres formas y por otra
parte el uso de las conjunciones “and” y “but” en inglés.

El verbo “to be” se traduce, por lo general, como ser o estar; aunque siempre hay excepciones y
oraciones donde la traducción literal no funciona.Es el verbo más importante del idioma inglés.
Se supone que hasta un 40% de las oraciones en inglés utilizan alguna forma del verbo “to be”
y no sólo es el verbo más usado, también es el verbo más irregular que tenemos. Veamos a
continuación sus tres formas:
El verbo “to be” se puede abreviar en las formas afirmativa y negativa de la siguiente manera:
Afirmativa: I’m – You’re – He’s – She’s – It’s – We’re – You’re – They’re.
Negativa: I’m not – You aren’t – He isn’t – She isn’t – It isn’t – We aren’t – They aren’t.
Examples:
1. I am an excellent student in English class.
2. You are my best friend at school.
3. He is in the computer lab one hour ago.
4. We aren’t in the same course this year.
5. They aren’t working in the store on weekends.
6. It isn’t a wonderful day for me!
7. Are you at home now?
8. Is Jennifer with her mother in Cúcuta?
9. Where are you studying English?
10. Are they good basketball players?
SOME CONJUNCTIONS
Las conjunciones “and” y “but” pueden ser usadas en inglés para unir dos oraciones. Sin
embargo su significado es diferente y su correcto empleo depende del contexto. Veamos:
And: significa “y” en español. Se utiliza para conectar dos ideas complementarias o similares y
siempre determina la idea de “adición”.
But: significa “pero” en español. Se utiliza para conectar dos ideas opuestas o que determinan
contraste entre ellas.

2. Abuelo – Grandfather
3. Abuelos – Grandparents
4. Adoptado – Adopted
5. Bisabuela – Great-grandmother
6. Bisabuelo – Great-grandfather
7. Cuñada – Sister-in-law
8. Cuñado – Brother-in-law
9. Gemelos – Identical Twins
10. Mellizos – Twins
11. Hermana – Sister
12. Hermano – Brother
13. Hermanos- Siblings
14. Hija – Daughter
15. Hijastra – Stepdaughter
16. Hijastro – Stepson
17. Hijo – Son
18. Único/a(hijo/a)- Only child
19. Huérfano/a – Orphan
20. Madrastra – Stepmother
21. Madre – Mother
22. Madrina – Godmother
23. Mamá – mom mommy (US) / mum, mummy (UK)
24. Marido / Esposo – Husband
25. Mujer / Esposa – Wife

Reporter: Welcome to a new episode of “Famous People’s Families”. Today we are going to talk about
the family of the new pop star Frank Coleman. Hello Frank. Do you have a large or a small family?
Frank: Hello. I would say small. My family consists of my wife, my son, my parents and my two sisters.
Reporter: What about your extended family?
Frank: My father has twelve siblings and my mother seven. So I have ten uncles and nine aunts, but to
tell you the truth I only see them at Christmas.
Reporter: Do you get along well with your sisters?
Frank: My sisters’ names are Rose and Rachel. I love my family more than anything, so we get along
well. I call them every week. It is a very close relationship.
Reporter: Tell us about your parents.
Frank: Well, they are my heroes. My mom’s name is Ivana. She is from Russia. She is 62 years old
and is really beautiful. My father’s name is Ralph. She is a dentist. They make a lovely couple.
Reporter: Would you like to have more children?
Frank: Yes! Actually, Elizabeth, my wife, is pregnant. We are excited and happy. My parents don’t
know yet. We are going to tell them tomorrow.
Reporter: Wow, that’s really good news. Thank you Frank for being here and for telling us about your
family.

VI. Relacione las siguientes oraciones en inglés empleando “and” o “but” según corresponda.
Situación Problémica: ¿Es posible utilizar en inglés en una misma oración las conjunciones “and” y
“but”?
