Pasado progresivo
Past progressive

El tiempo pasado progresivo se usa para describir acciones que estuvieron sucediendo continuamente en el pasado,
por ejemplo:
Carlos estaba cavando afuera en la nieve.
Carlos was digging out in the snow

Para hacer oraciones en este tiempo, usamos Was o were + verbo + ing (en gerundio). Como usamos el To be en
pasado (was/ were) como auxiliar, seguimos las mismas reglas del tema de la guía 1 para las diferentes formas

This couple were not figthing in the field:

Esta pareja no estaba peleando el campo

¿CÓMO FORMAR EL PASADO PROGRESIVO?

La estructura es entonces la siguiente:

Was / were + verbo principal en gerundio(ing)

 Forma afirmativa

Sujeto + was / were + verbo principal en gerundio+ complemento

Veamos algunos ejemplos de frases que usan el pasado progresivo.

I was eating a Sandwich.
Yo estaba comiendo un sándwich.

The kids were playing.the drum

Los niños estaban tocando el tambor.

We were watching a movie.

Estábamos viendo una película.

Forma negativa

Las formas negativas del past progressive siguen las reglas que se usan para conjugar el verbo to be en el pasado.

Sujeto was/ were + not + gerundio

They were not sleeping
Es muy común usar una forma contraída con to be con el past progressive; es decir wasn’t en lugar de was not y
weren’t en lugar de were not.

Forma interrogativa

Para hacer preguntas usando the past progressive, hay que invertir el sujeto y la forma conjugada de to be.
Comparamos la forma afirmativa con la forma interrogativa.

Wh+ was/ were + Sujeto + verbo+ing +complemento ?

Were they eating chips?

¿Estaban ellos comiendo papitas?

➢ Why Were you dancing alone? ¿Por qué estabas bailando solo?
R/ Because nobody wanted to dance with me ; porque nadie quiso bailar conmigo

➢ Was she talking to me? ¿Ella me estaba hablando?

R/ yes, she was / No, she wasn´t si, ella estaba / No, ella no estaba

➢ When Was I sitting next to you? ¿Cuándo estaba yo sentado a tu lado?

R/ Last night : Anoche
 Pasado simple
El pasado simple, o el simple past, es el tiempo verbal que se usa en el idioma inglés para narrar hechos que
ocurrieron en un momento específico en el pasado.

The avalanche covered his pet

La avalancha cubrió su mascota (de él )

Formación del pasado simple

Verbos regulares

En los verbos regulares, se añade “-ed” o “-d” o ied al verbo en infinitivo. Por ejemplo:

Infinitive Past

Work trabajar Worked trabajó

Hope esperar (tener esperanza) Hoped esperaba (tenía esperanza)

Play Jugar/ tocar un instrumento musical Played jugó, tocó

Stay permanece r/quedarse Stayed permaneció

Cuando el verbo termina en ” Y” y esta está precedida por consonante , se quita Y se añade “ied”:

Try tratar/ intentar Tried trató / intentó

Reply resonder / contetar Replied respondió/ contestó

Verbos irregulares

Para formar el pasado de los verbos irregulares, no agregamos nada al verbo, este simplemente cambia, cambia un
fonema (letra) o no cambia . Ejemplo

Be /am /is /are was/ were ser, estar

 Estructura de la oración en pasado simple con verbos no auxiliares

La estructura es entonces la siguiente:

Forma afirmativa

Sujeto + verbo en pasado + complemento

The kids played the drum
Los niños tocaron el tambor

She ate a Salad last night

Ella comió una ensalada anoche

Joseph was in Australia

Joseph estaba en Australia

We went to the movies last week

Nosotros vimos una película la semana pasada

Luis visited his fríends two days ago

Luis visitó a sus amigos hace 2 días
 Forma negativa

Las formas negativas del past simple con verbos no auxiliares siguen diferentes a las que se usan para conjugar el
verbo to be en el pasado.

Sujeto did + not + verbo en presente

Mary did not sleep last night

Es muy común usar una forma contraída es decir didn’t en lugar de did not. = No

➢ They didn´t cut that tree

ellos no cortaron ese árbol

➢ These turtles didn´t run so fast

Estas tortugas no corrieron tan rápido

Forma interrogativa

Para hacer preguntas en pasado simple usamos el pasado del verbo Do (Did ) como auxiliar, solo se usa como apoyo
en las oraciones negativas y en las interrogativas , no tiene significado y el verbo siempre va en presente

Wh+ did + Sujeto + verbo en infinitivo +complemento ?

Did they eat chips?

¿ellos comieron papitas?

➢ Why did you dance alone? ¿Por qué bailaste solo?

R/ Because nobody wanted to dance with me ; Porque nadie quiso bailar conmigo

➢ Did she talk to me yesterday? ¿Ella me habló ayer?

R/ yes, she did / No, she didn´t Si, ella lo hizo / No, ella no lo hizo

A STRANGE EXPERIENCE

Last month I was on holiday in Ireland with my mum and dad. One day, we were driving through a small village. It
was time for lunch, so we stopped at a restaurant.
It was a large, old builiding. We looked through the window. There were lots of people in the restaurant. They were
eating, drinking and chatting. A musician was playing the violin. But there was something strange about the people .
They weren't wearing normal, modern clothes. They were wearing hats, jackets and dresses from another century.
We couldn't understand it, But we were hungry, so we opened the door .
When we went into the restaurant, everything was different. The people were wearing normal clothes. The musician
wasn't there the music was on CD. It was a very strange experience!

Observa las imágenes a continuación y desarrolla los puntos 3, 4 y 5.
1. En el punto 3 encuentre los verbos en pasado en la sopa de letras y clasifíquelos en regular o
irregulares.
2. En el punto 4 lea la carta que Jane le escribió a sus padres y complete los espacios con el
pasado de los verbos entre paréntesis.
3. De acuerdo con las imágenes escriba una oración describiendo lo que la persona hizo; use los
verbos entre paréntesis.
