• The verbs ir and ser have identical forms in the preterit. They are used often in
speaking and writing, and the context will help you to determine the meaning.

• You will also be able to differentiate between ir and ser in the preterit because ir is
often followed by the preposition a.
Ernesto fue a la tienda. Ernesto went to the store.
Fue vendedor en esa tienda por dos años. He was a salesclerk at that
store for two years.
