Resumen
Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to compare three classification models:
Binary logistic model, discriminant analysis and multilayer perceptron neural
networks to evaluate the performance of students in the first academic cycle
of the university. Academic performance was measured from two aspects: the
final average in the mathematics course and the number of approved credits
at the end of the academic cycle.
For this reason, three statistical techniques were applied to a total of 553
university students corresponding to the 2017 I and 2017 II academic cycles.
Two data groups were used, training (70%) and validation (30%). The
proposed models were compared using the indicators: sensitivity, specificity
and ROC curve.
Therefore, this study concludes that the binary logistic regression models
better classified the academic performance of the students in the 2017 I and
2017 II cycles, except for the result in the 2017 II cycle, which was better
classified with the multilayer perceptron-type neural network model. The
average grade in the mathematics area of the university entrance exam was
the most important for the classification of the academic performance of the
first cycle students of the university.
