9. There are three areas of study that look at how ideas create value:

13. Asked to define creativity, David Burkus from Oral Roberts University says:
14. “Creativity is seen by most experts in the field as the process of developing ideas
that
16. Daniel Isenberg from Harvard explains entrepreneurship and innovation in this way:
17. “Most of us would agree that innovation has something to do with the tangible
manifestation
20. Ideas help, but the norms for entrepreneurs – hard work, ambition, resourcefulness,
21. unconventional thinking, salesmanship, and leadership – will usually trump brilliant
22. ideas.”
25. All three domains of creativity, entrepreneurship and innovation focus on slightly
different
26. aspects of creating value from ideas, but there are some common threads.
28. The part of the process that everyone understands is the new idea.
29. Most of our innovation and creativity metaphors revolve around ideas - the flash of
insight,
31. Ideas, and their quality, are an important part of creativity, entrepreneurship and
innovation.
32. But as the Isenberg quote suggests, there is a lot more to achieving impact than
just
34. All three research areas agree that the ideas need to be executed – they must
become real.
35. Too many people stop once they’ve simply HAD an idea.
37. This takes hard work, a deep level of knowledge in the area you’re working in, and
the ability
39. The last part is that the ideas must create value or be useful.
40. This is the tricky bit, because it means you need a deep understanding of the
problem that
41. you’re trying to solve, from the perspective of the people that you’re trying to serve.
42. This is also the part that too many people skip.
45. One of the important parts of creativity research looks at how people create novel
ideas.
46. The good news for us is that it isn’t some magical thing that only geniuses can do -
there
47. are a lot of steps we can take to get better at having more, and better, ideas.
48. We’ll use creativity to talk about this process of generating new ideas.
49. Entrepreneurship and innovation both talk about creating value from new ideas -
the
53. They usually have very limited resources - not much money, no customers, and no
obvious way
55. But the best entrepreneurs are good at identifying or creating opportunities - and
that is a
58. Some people use it to refer to inventing new things, others to refer all of these

60. We’ll use it to refer to executing new ideas to create value in the setting of an
organization.
62. Corporate innovators have access to more resources - they have existing
customers, and some type
65. But there are important constraints that organizations face also.
66. All those existing resources make it difficult to create and deliver value in

67. new ways - organizations are often locked in to an existing way of doing business.
69. This can make the process of innovation seem wasteful, inefficient, and a poor use
of resources.
