 INTRODUCCION
INTRODUCTION

La construcción tradicional está relacionada con lo permanente, el planteo
que hacemos en este volumen de Casas Internacional se relaciona con lo
transitorio y el reciclaje.
Es una arquitectura atípica, partimos de un exterior determinado por el
contenedor marítimo, hay que pensarla por dentro y con la interrelación de
varios contenedores, por lo tanto modificamos esas dimensiones preestablecidas,
nos alejamos de las respuestas formales, esto es otra cosa.
Es la opinión generalizada, a partir del desconocimiento, que es un modelo
difícil de habitar, y el resultado que brinda es excelente, debemos cambiar
determinadas estructuras mentales, ésta es otra arquitectura, se cuestionan las
pautas de belleza, de utilidad, se acerca más a una arquitectura experimental.
Hay que pensar que tenemos que encarar la arquitectura desde una óptica
industrial, con capacidad de producir unidades habitables, moduladas, flexibles,
repetibles, con la posibilidad de ser construidas dentro de un ensamble a
semejanza de los procesos industriales del automóvil.
Las pautas sobresalientes de las casas que presentamos son muy variadas,
pero con algunos conceptos del diseño con sentido común, como por ejemplo:
• Una imagen urbana, economía y rapidez de construcción, bajo impacto al entorno
• Organizar el hábitat interior, optimizando cada espacio y recoveco de la vivienda
• Presupuestos acotados y reducidos
• Seguridad, calidad de los materiales y fácil mantenimiento
• Articulación de los módulos generando espacios de circulación y patios interiores
• Generación de espacios habitables a partir de la reutilización de
contenedores marítimos
• Ahorro energético a partir de la optimización de las aislaciones
• Soluciones ecoambientales: diseño bioambiental, utilización de energías
alternativas, como la energía solar o eólica, gestión eficiente en la utilización
del agua, recupero de aguas grises, utilización de maderas de producción
responsable, materiales no contaminantes y reutilización de los mismos
• Flexibilidad y movimiento
Traditional building systems are associated with permanence, what we are
presenting in this issue of Casas Internacional is related to transience and recycling.
It is a non-typical architecture, starting with a preset exterior established by
the shipping container, we must work out the inside and the interrelation with
various containers; so we change the pre-established dimensions, moving away
from formal solutions ...this is something different.
Public opinion, due to ignorance of the subject, considers it difficult to
live in, yet the solution it offers is excellent, so we must change certain mental
structures; this is a different architecture, challenging standards of beauty and
practicality, similar to an experimental architecture.
One must keep in mind that we need to approach architecture from an
industrial point of view, with the capacity to produce modulated, flexible,
repeatable housing units, which can be built within an assembly process similar
to those of the car industry.
The outstanding features of the houses we present are very varied, but with
some common sense design concepts, like the following:
• An urban image, low cost and fast construction, low environmental impact.
• Organization of the internal dwelling, optimizing each space and corner
of the home.
• Limited and reduced budgets.
• Safety, quality of the materials and easy maintenance.
• Articulation of the modules generating circulation spaces and internal
courtyards.
• Generation of habitable spaces on the basis of the use of shipping containers.
• Energy saving on the basis of optimized insulation.
• Environmentally friendly solutions: bioclimatic design using alternative
energy sources, such as solar or wind power, efficient management of water
use, recovering of gray waters, use of timber from renewable sources, non-
contaminating materials and re-use of these.
• Flexibility and movement.

El proyecto Vivienda Contenedor 2 (VC2) es una
propuesta que nace como respuesta a 3 variables evi-
dentes, que nosotros vemos como oportunidades en la
solución a la vivienda social contemporánea: Viviendas
de rápida ejecución, buen presupuesto y de calidad ga-
rantizada en el tiempo. Casas que asuman la coordenada
ética medioambiental y una escala humana en las que el
usuario habite cómodamente.
Bajo el lema “cuando lo abandonado se re-utiliza”,
es que nuestra oficina manifiesta la posibilidad cierta de
dar respuesta a estos factores de modo complementario,
a través de un elemento siempre presente en la vida coti-
diana de la ciudad de Valparaíso: los contenedores.
“La Vivienda Contenedor” es una amalgama de
ideas, que fueron desarrolladas para generar una pro-
puesta de solución definitiva para los damnificados por
el terremoto del 27 de febrero de 2010. Estas toman
cuerpo demostrando que muchas de las soluciones al
tema medioambiental-económico están a nuestro alcan-
ce y deben estar expuestas desde la edificación primaria
de cualquier ciudad. VC2 es una vivienda unifamiliar de
2 pisos con ampliación proyectada y regulada.
Nos parece una excelente solución para enfrentar
tanto la escasez de viviendas de buena calidad y de bajo
costo hasta, incluso, poder brindarles una solución a los
damnificados de la isla Juan Fernández, llevándoles las
casas “preparadas y terminadas” para tan sólo llegar y
montarlas allá, después de la catástrofe del maremoto.

The project Container Home 2 (CH2) is a pro-
posal which arises as an answer to 3 evident variables
which we saw as an opportunity to develop a solution
to contemporary social housing problems: homes with
rapid assembly, low budget and guaranteed quality
over time. Homes that adopt the environmental ethics
coordinates and a human scale in which the user can
dwell comfortably.
Under the motto “when what is discarded is re-used”,
our office expresses the real possibility of responding to
these factors in a complementary way, through an ele-
ment that is ever present in the daily life of the city of
Valparaiso: shipping containers.
“The Container Home” is a combination of ideas
that were developed to generate the proposal of a de-
finitive solution for the victims of the earthquake of
27 February 2010. These come together demonstrat-
ing that many of the solutions to the environmental-
financial issues are within our reach and must be im-
plemented at the primary building stages in any city.
CH2 is a single family home on 2 floors with a de-
signed and regulated expansion.
We believe it is an excellent solution to confront both
the deficit of good quality / low cost housing and the
need to offer a solution to the victims on Juan Fernan-
dez Island, taking them homes which are “finished and
ready” to be delivered and assembled there, after the
tidal wave catastrophe.

PORT - A - BACH
El Port-a-Bach es una unidad de vivienda portátil,
desplegable, compacta pero cómoda, construida dentro
de un contenedor de carga. Esta propuesta es una res-
puesta a la creciente demanda de viviendas temporarias,
móviles, con bajo impacto sobre el entorno.
El Port-a-Bach es un edificio desarrollado sobre la idea de
crear una unidad de vivienda cómoda sin perder la movilidad
de un contendor marítimo. El diseño del Port-a-Bach man-
tiene la estructura exterior básica del contenedor, mientras
que ofrece un interior residencial adaptable, elegante, en un
único material unificador, que utiliza madera procedente de
bosques sustentables para crear los revestimientos y los mue-
bles. Esto permite que sea transportado con facilidad.
Todas las estructuras y servicios fijos están concentrados
dentro del cuerpo del contenedor y, una vez ubicado en
el sitio, un lado del contenedor se despliega para crear un
deck exterior que se puede cerrar, utilizando los materiales
adecuados según el entorno en el que se encuentra. El Port-
a-Bach se revierte de forma rápida y sencilla a su formato
original de contenedor de carga. La intención es también
que el Port-a-Bach pueda generar su propia energía eléctri-
ca, si fuera necesario, por medio de paneles fotovoltaicos y
una turbina de viento, una característica de gran utilidad
para lugares en donde no existen los servicios básicos. Pue-
de operar sin red o contribuir energía a la red.

The Port-a-Bach is a portable, unfolding, compact,
but comfortable housing unit built within a shipping
container. This proposal is a response to the growing
needs for mobile, temporary dwellings with low im-
pact on site.
The Port-a-Bach is a building developed around
the notion of creating a comfortable living unit while
retaining the mobility of the shipping container. The
Port-a-Bach design maintains the basic external struc-
ture of the container while providing a smart, mono-
material, adaptable living interior by introducing sus-
tainably grown timbers to create linings and furniture.
This allows it to be easily transported.
All fixed structures and services are concentrated
within the body of the container and, once on site,
one side of the container is unfolded to create an ex-
ternal deck that can be enclosed using materials suit-
ed to the environment in which it is placed. The Port-
a-Bach is quickly and simply reverted to its original
form as a shipping container. It is also intended that
that the Port-a-Bach can produce its own electricity
if required, through photovoltaic panels and a wind
turbine, a useful feature where basic services might
not be available. It can operate off-grid or feed power
into the grid.

El programa consta básicamente de 3 elementos:

con placas de MDF ranurado y pintado blanco. En su
interior alberga los servicios de baño y cocina. Hacia el
exterior se proyecta una gran terraza deck de madera y
sobre ésta una estructura metálica de las mismas dimen-
siones del container (6 x 2,40 m), sobre la estructura se
instala un techo y un muro de lona de PVC.
Patios de carpas: patios delimitados por muros de pie-
dra de baja altura que contienen arena de río, éstos se
unen entre sí a través de senderos de gravilla.
Torre de agua: cumple la función de bodega y “sala de
máquinas” en el primer nivel, dormitorio en el segundo
nivel y estanque de agua en el tercero.

The challenge was to design a space, with a limited
budget, in which to spend short vacation periods. It
also needed to be safe and of easy maintenance. Due
to the conditions of the place (inclement climate,
distance from urban centers, wind, no power or run-
ning water) we decided to use a 20-foot container,
which had to be completely prefabricated and com-
missioned in the workshop in Santiago. Only the civil
works (stone walls, tower, courtyards, services) were
executed “in situ”.
The brief consists basically of 3 elements:
Container: A container that has been fitted out,
cladding the exterior with a layer of steel plates with a
rust-like appearance (Corten steel) and the interior with
white painted grooved MDF panels. Inside it houses the
bathroom and kitchen services. Outside it extends onto
a wide timber deck and upon this a metal frame of the
same dimensions as the container (20’ x 8’) supports a
roof and wall of PVC tarpaulin.
Tent courtyards: courtyards outlined by low stone
walls that contain sand from the riverbed, connected to
each other by gravel paths.
Water tower: it acts as a store and plant room on the
first level, bedroom on the second level and water tank
on the third.

La propuesta constructiva contribuye a reducir las

emisiones de CO2 a la atmosfera incorporando distintos
criterios de sustentabilidad, a saber:
- Reciclaje: en la generación de espacios habitables a
partir de la reutilización de contendores.
- Ahorro energético: resolviendo las envolventes con
bajos coeficientes de transmitancia térmica, a través del
empleo de aislación de celulosa proyectada y carpinterías
de PVC de alta prestación.
- Energías renovables: aplicación de energía solar.
- Gestión eficiente de las aguas: a partir del empleo
de circuitos diferenciados.
- Materiales ecológicos: incorporación de maderas de
fuentes responsables, materiales no contaminantes, y cu-
biertas verdes ajardinadas como elemento característico
del sistema en los techos planos.

The proposal is to design a prototype city block,
connected to a main road. This block is arranged in
3 modules of perimeter homes, which enclose a green
communal space. This space becomes an inner expan-
sion courtyard for the homes (air and sunlight) and the
center of social activity with recreational, sports and re-
tail facilities to this end.
The strips are created by “extrusion”, by the juxta-
position of containers and the addition, on one or both
faces, of external circulation walkways. Depending upon
the location of these walkways the building is either split
in half, with units facing either to the street or the inner
courtyard; or directly arranged as a single unit using the
full length of the container.
The technical design contributes to the reduction of
CO2 emissions into the atmosphere incorporating nu-
merous sustainability criteria, as follows:
- Recycling: with the creation of habitable spaces
based on reusing containers.
- Energy savings: designing the enclosure with low
thermal transmittance, through the use of spray-ap-
plied cellulose insulation and high performance PVC
windows.
- Renewable energy sources: using solar energy.
- Efficient water use: using differentiated circuits.
- Ecological materials: incorporating timber from
responsible sources, non-contaminating materials, and
green landscaped roofs as a characteristic feature of the
system’s flat roofs.

FICHA TECNICA: Esta vivienda, llamada la c192 Nomad, se caracteriza

Midiendo 2,4 m por 7,3 m, su diseño compacto, modu-
lar, permite un transporte y ensamblaje eficiente, pudiendo
también ser fácilmente adosados con otros módulos incre-
mentando así su tamaño. También pueden ser equipados
para funcionar sin conectarse a la red de servicios públicos.

This home, called the c192 Nomad, features a sleek
kitchen, large glass windows, bathroom, built-in stor-
age, flexible space and an outdoor patio.
The home includes a total of 192 square feet, but
adding the outdoor living space it extends to more than
300 square feet.
The container that is used for the Nomad has a de-
cade of travel to and from South Korea carrying goods
and is currently in Seattle, doing steel modifications for
large door openings. The container will soon be shipped
to Klamath Falls where it will take about three weeks to
complete its fabrication and transformation into a home.
The home will then be transported by truck and arrive
complete at Menlo Park where it will be plugged in.
One major advantage is that it is re-locatable and
adaptable to different sites. The foundation can be
moved, all utilities have industry standard connectors,
and even the deck is provided in modules.
These dwellings, made from cargo containers, have
floor areas ranging from 160 sq. ft. to 1,200 sq. ft. and
are often used for a small home, backyard retreat, art
studio or home office.
Measuring 8 feet by 24 feet, their compact, modular
design allow efficient transportation and assembly and
they can easily be joined with other modules, thus in-
creasing their size as required. They can also be equipped
to operate “off-grid”.

día, y tiene un portón tipo garaje que permite asegurar
la casa contra tormentas, robos, o para su transporte.
Se puede adaptar a diferentes sitios. Todos los interiores
son no-emisores de gases y sustentables. Incluso los mu-
ros interiores de madera terciada, son reciclados de un
gimnasio de una escuela local que estaba siendo demoli-
da en ese momento.
Esta vivienda es parte de la serie de sistemas de cons-
trucción modulares que HyBrid acuñó, desarrolló y re-
gistró con la marca Cargotecture®. Las viviendas Car-
gotecture® son enviadas directamente desde la fábrica al
lugar para su fácil instalación y pueden ser transportados
sin inconvenientes a otro sitio.

The client owns a large property, and he wanted a
place to stay during summer weekends in one corner
down near a river.
HyBrid sized the solar panels and roof-water collec-
tion system to make this project completely “off-grid”
and fully re-locatable.
Two 20’ long cargo containers were modified to
slide two meters past one another to reference their past
travel, and in these spaces a bed nook and media cabi-
net were placed in one end, and a shower-pan bathroom
and kitchen in the other. In the centre we find an open
space that provides 248 sq. ft. of living room, dining
room, and un-programmed activity space.
The entire home may be relocated within one day,
and it has a barn door, which allows the home to be
secured against storms, intruders, or for transport. It is
adaptable to different sites.
All interiors are non-offgassing and are sustainable.
Even the interior plywood walls are recycled from a
gymnasium of a local high school, which was being de-
molished at the time.
The living space is part of a series of modular
building systems that HyBrid coined, developed, and
trademarked as Cargotecture®. These dwellings, made
from cargo containers, range from 160 sq. ft. to 1,200
sq. ft. Cargotecture® homes are shipped directly from
factory to site for easy installation and can be moved
seamlessly to another site.

At the top of a hill, as if we were speaking of a
castle or a fortress, strategically located and dominat-
ing a marvelous landscape, this house has a permeable
quality along its east-west axis, disappearing over the
landscape by means of a great glazed space that feels
like being under a bridge in the middle of nowhere…
this effect, when one is in the social area of the home,
gives a special magic and warmth to this place from
which watching the sunrise or sunset can be a truly
recreational experience.
The house is arranged around this great space with
closed volumes on the north-south axis, contrasting
with the open side and generating in this way a volumet-
ric tension towards one of the views. Whilst the contain-
ers are the home’s building system, they are intentionally
covered by a cladding that, by playing with its horizon-
tal elements, generates a rich play of light and shade that
also dematerializes the volumes, becoming in this way a
living architectural object, in “stand-by” position.
Concept: Design by James&Mau for Infiniski, dis-
playing the greatest possible potential of the Infini-
ski concept: bioclimatic design, recycling, re-use and
reduction of building materials, non-contaminating
materials and building techniques, use of energy from
renewable sources.

bir un escalón al entrar, un simple cambio de nivel que
no disimula su origen industrial. Dos escaleras de acero
enfrentadas se ubican en un mismo eje con las alas de dos
niveles, cortando al medio la puerta de garaje, abriendo
la casa totalmente hacia el entorno natural y otorgándo-
le una urbanidad doméstica irrepetible. El edificio en su
totalidad se asienta sobre un pedestal que acomoda los
desniveles como un tipo de basamento fabril.

In this 12-container House (Adriance House), the
containers buttress and protect a delicately glazed interior
from the harsh coastal climate of Northern Maine.
The North and South façades provide varied ac-
commodation within their inhabited walls.
On the first floor level, two of the containers are
opened up longitudinally to reveal a kitchen on one
side and a library/living room on the other, with a
fireplace and extended raised platform for a sofa,
floating somewhere between the intimacy of this dis-
creet capsule and the loftiness of the double-height
living space.
All of the first floor containers are stepped into,
a simple level change which does not disguise their
industrial provenance. Two facing steel staircases,
positioned on an axis with the two-storey contain-
er wings, bisect the glazed garage door —Kalkin´s
main trademark—opening the house fully to its
natural environment and affording a unique domes-
tic civility. The entire building sits on a plinth that
accommodates the level changes, like a kind of fac-
tory pediment.

necesidades espaciales de las personas que van a utilizarlo.
Los precios reducidos, de estas unidades de vivienda/trabajo,
los hace competitivos cuando se comparan con la vivienda
tradicional e intentan incrementar el número de propieta-
rios, quienes pueden usar el capital sobrante para ampliar el
espacio de su vivienda o invertir más en diseño interior.

Even though the past 20 years have significantly
changed the face of architecture, the basic form of these
containers has remained the same. The ConHouse sys-
tem now upgrades them to enable a quality of living
comparable to classical housing. This is achieved mainly
through rationally designed plans, carefully selected ma-
terials, a well-lit interior and the customized outer ap-
pearance of individual units.
The 2+ is a two-level mini housing unit composed
of two containers perpendicular to each other. It shows
that a minimal number of containers combined in an
innovative fashion offer fresh yet functional architectur-
al solutions. The upper container provides a projecting
roof above the entrance as well as providing shelter to
the back terrace. The ceiling of the bottom container is
also a terrace of the second floor.
The pink-dotted façade illustrates the wide range
of possibilities for tailor-made exteriors. The sys-
tem’s modular nature enables containers to be added
or subtracted from the compound as needed, so that
the ConHouse can grow or contract depending on
the actual spatial needs of the people using it. Lower
prices of such live/work units make them competitive
as compared to traditional housing and are intended
to increase the number of homeowners, who can then
use the extra cash to expand their living space or invest
more into interior design.

DIEMEN STUDENT HOUSING
Ubicación: este proyecto se encuentra en Diemen, al lado
de la universidad INHolland Hogeschool. En colaboración
con la universidad hemos creado un esquema de campus pe-
queño. El proyecto tiene una ubicación muy favorable.
Programa e idea: la demanda de alojamiento para estu-
diantes le ha dado a Tempohousing la oportunidad de im-
plementar un proyecto de 250 unidades de vivienda. Cada
unidad individual, dentro de un contenedor de 12,20 m,
alberga un dormitorio, un espacio de estar/cocina y un baño
con una superficie total neta de 27 m². Este proyecto consiste
de 4 bloques de edificios organizados en forma de cuadrado,
creando un patio central que proporciona espacio para guar-
dado de bicicletas. Cada bloque tiene 5 pisos de altura. Las
pasarelas miran hacia el patio, mientras que del lado opuesto
cada unidad tiene un balcón privado. Se ha montado una
fachada verde de acero envolviendo toda la estructura.
Un pequeño supermercado/café al lado del complejo
provee las necesidades básicas de los estudiantes.
Etapa de construcción: las pasarelas de hormigón son
los elementos más nuevos. Certifican la ruta de escape
de emergencia/incendio más segura.
Este proyecto se ha diseñado de forma que sea móvil.
Luego de estar en esta ubicación durante 5 años, se supone
que deberá trasladarse a la próxima ubicación. El diseño de
todos sus componentes está basado en esta premisa y esta for-
ma particular de uso. Cuando no sean ya de utilidad como
viviendas en los Países Bajos, pueden ser exportados a cual-
quier lugar del mundo, ya que los contenedores tiene una
placa de aprobación CSC y son considerados carga estándar
en los buques cargueros que navegan alrededor del mundo.

Location: This project is situated in Diemen next to
the INHolland Hogeschool University. In cooperation
with the university we have created a small campus con-
cept. The project is very conveniently located.
Program & Concept: The continuing demand for
student housing gave TEMPOHOUSING the oppor-
tunity to undertake a project of 250 living units. Each
single unit in a 40’ container houses a bedroom, a kitch-
en/ living area and a bathroom on a total of 290 square
feet net floor space.
The project consists of 4 blocks of buildings ar-
ranged in a square, thus creating an enclosed courtyard
that provides space for bicycle parking. Each block is 5
storeys high. The walkways face the courtyard, whilst
on the opposite side each unit has a private balcony. An
architectural green steel façade has been mounted envel-
oping the entire structure.
A small supermarket/cafe next to the complex pro-
vides the students with their basic needs.
Building Phase: The concrete walkways are the latest
feature of the TEMPOHOUSING projects. They pro-
vide the safest emergency/ fire escape.
This project is designed to be mobile. After 5 years
on this location, it is supposed to be moved entirely to
the next location. The design of all its components an-
ticipates this particular type of use. After they have no
use anymore as housing in The Netherlands, they can be
exported to any location world wide, since the contain-
ers have a CSC plate and are considered standard freight
on the container vessels that sail around the world.

la naturaleza a pesar de la lejanía del mar y del bosque.
Es así como, por su imagen urbana, economía y rapi-
dez en construcción se plantearon 3 módulos containers
para las distintas zonas de la casa y un volumen de madera
que los articula y aloja en su interior la escalera. Exterior-
mente se mantuvo la textura propia del container (ima-
gen urbana - graffiti), utilizando los techos de éstos como
terrazas-mirador a distinta altura, que permiten ver el mar
y un frondoso bosque en el lado sur, donde a futuro se
agregarán más módulos para el crecimiento de la casa.
Se planteó también, vegetación de hoja caduca en su
cara norte, que además de su valor estético, termo regula
el ambiente. En verano, cuando los árboles están más tu-
pidos, funciona como un filtro que tamiza la luz del sol.
Así se evita la incidencia directa de los rayos, los cuales
elevarían en exceso la temperatura interior.
El gran desafío fue organizar el habitar interior, ya
que por sus dimensiones, se debió optimizar cada recin-
to y cada recoveco de la vivienda.

This container home is located 1¼ mile from the
beach at Pichindangui, V Region, Chile. It was designed
as a second home for a couple formed by a writer and
a journalist. The idea was to maintain the comforts of
urban life, but also to bring the sea and landscape near,
for rest and inspiration.
This is why one of the couple’s requirements was to
create libraries in different corners of the home, and at
the same time connect with nature in spite of the dis-
tance to the sea and woods.
With this in mind, and due to their urban image, low
price and fast assembly, we proposed 3 container mod-
ules for the different areas of the home and a timber vol-
ume that articulates them and houses the staircase. Out-
side, the container’s own texture was maintained (urban
image – graffiti), using the roofs of these as look-out
terraces on different levels, offering views of the sea and
a deep leafy forest to the south, where in the future more
modules will be added as an extension of the house.
We also proposed deciduous vegetation on the north
side which, aside from its aesthetic value, thermally reg-
ulates the environment. In summer, when the treetops
are denser, it acts as a screen that filters the sunlight.
This avoids the direct exposure to the sun’s rays, which
would raise the interior temperature excessively.
The great challenge was to arrange the internal
dwelling spaces, as their dimensions required the opti-
mization of every space and corner of the home.
