Cuando El Croquis me propuso la posibilidad de una segunda entrevista con Rem Koolhaas, tuve serias dudas. Pensando en ello, recordé la situación en que se
produjo la primera entrevista, en mitad de la euforia de los proyectos del ZKM y de Lille, cuando la 'modernización de Europa' se estaba forjando en OMA,,,
Recordé un suceso del que fuí testigo directo durante mi estancia en O MA, y que nos hizo muy conscientes de cómo el clima en Europa estaba cambiando de
forma drástica: la muerte del proyecto del ZKM, Había venido oyendo últimamente que OMA había sufrido cambios es1:ructurales importantes, y pensé que quizá
fuese el efecto inevitable de los cambios en el entorno. Recordé que, después de la primera entrevista 'Fíndíng Freedoms' (Encontrando Libertades), se suponía
que Koolhaas escribiría un epílogo titulado 'Freedom from Freedoms' (Libertad de las Libertades), que nunca acabó. Se me ocurrió que esta segunda entrevista
podría ser una oportunidad para explicar que quizá no es tan sencillo encontrar libertades, Después de todo, la carrera de Koolhaas es la demostración de que
quizá la única posible 'libertad' es la de migrar entre 'estructuras', desarrollar una práctica mutante que opera en base a lo eventual más que a lo esencial. Esta
segunda entrevista era la oportunidad de describir con precisión esta especie de 'estructuralismo radical nómada' -una alternativa viable al colapso del post­
estructuralismo- que yo considero la contribución más importante que Koolhaas ha hecho a nivel teórico. Y éste parecía un argumento suficientemente atrac­
tivo para esta segunda entrevista, a pesar de la alarmante idea de que también justificaría toda una serie de ellas, una suerte de diagnóstico permanente,,.
A pesar de las dudas, Koolhaas también encontró razones -que nunca discutimos- para hacer esta segunda entrevista que fue finalmente grabada -por
pura casualidad- el día después de la presentación al público de S,M,L,XL, �u segundo libro, en la Architectural Association en Londres. El título es un inten­
to de nombrar estas ideas a través de un acontecimiento, más que como una categoría.

When El Croquis proposed a second interview with Rem Koolhaas, there were serious doubts about its potential interest in any sense. Thinking about it, I remem­
bered the context of the first interview: in the midst of the euphoria surrounding the ZKM and the U/le projects, when 'modernised Europe' was being produced
at OMA. I remembered an event that / had witnessed at OMA very directly, which made us very aware of the fact that the climate in Europe was changing dras­

tical/y: the death of the ZKM project. I had heard that OMA had recently undergone important structural changes, and I thought that perhaps it was the necessary

effect of the changes in the environment. / remembered that, after the first interview 'Finding Freedoms', Rem was supposed to write an afterword titled 'Freedom
from Freedoms', which he never did. And I thought that this second interview might be an opportunity to explain that perhaps it is not so easy to find freedoms.
After al/, Rem's career is a demonstration that maybe the only possibfe 'freedom' is to migrate between 'structures', to develop a mutant practice that operates
on an 'eventual' rather than 'essential' basis. The second interview was an opportunity to depict precise/y a kind of 'nomadic radical structuralism', -a very so/id
alternative to the collapse of post-structuralism-, which / think is Rem's most important discovery on a theoretical leve/. And this seemed a very good reason to

do this second interview, in spite of the scary thought that it may be a/so the reason for a who/e set of them, a kind of permanent diagnosis...
Rem a/so found reasons for this second interview, which we never discussed. By pure chance, it was final/y recorded the day after the public presentation of his

second book, S,M,L,XL, at the Architectural Association in London. The title is an attempt to name these ideas after an event, rather than as a category.

Su trabajo durante los años ochenta estaba profundamente involucrado en
una nueva formulación de una Eurppa moderna a la luz de los nuevos desa­
rrollos económicos y políticos del periodo posterior a la guerra fría. Este perio­
do de desarrollo y de esperanza política se desvanece repentinamente al
comienzo de los noventa, resultando en el abandono de los proyectos más
ambiciosos y el regreso a actitudes más conservadoras. El deterioro de las
condiciones económicas en Europa, y la erosión de las ambiciones de una
Europa modernizada parecen haber tenido un efecto directo en la estructu­
ra que OMA había desarrollado durante los años ochenta. Después de tres
años de incertidumbre, usted ha realizado cambios sustanciales en la orga­

cieras me hicieron especialmente consciente de su permanente

durante la cual es inevitable una recepción escéptica-, des­
pués de diez años de producir proyectos y de realizar ciertos des­
cubrimientos, llegaría un momento en que seriamos tratados
de forma diferente, tanto en términos de remuneración econó­
mica como en las propias condiciones de trabajo. Pero quedó
claro que no existe ese nivel teórico de estabilidad, que se está

Who dares to talle about the richness of the Front de Seine? So many varia­
tions on the same theme!
And what is the parlicular affliction that renders these treasures invisible, inac­
cessible, indigestible? Why are we ali part of this ineffectual chorus that moans,
in the name of humanity, about its culminating achievements? Must the '20th
century end on this note? Yes! For those who can forget-for a fleeting

Your work during the eighties was deeply involved in a reformulation of a
modern Europe in the light of the new economic and política/ developments
of the post co/d-war period. This period of development and politica/ hopes
vanishes suddenly at the beginning of the nineties, resulting in the abandon­
ment of the most ambitious projects and the return to conservative attitudes.
The decline of the European economic conditions and the erosion of the ambi­
tions of a modernised Europe seemed to have direct effects on the structure
that OMA had deve/oped during the eighties. After three years of uncertainty,
you have recently made substantial changes in the organisation of your office.
What is the nature of this recent mutations in the structure of OMA?
The erosion of the 'fabrication' of Europe and the impact of economic
decline was very important in these changes. To begin with, it had a
negative effect on our income. And, since we were committed to this
invention of Europe, it made our conceptual basis fragile. lt coincided
with a need to reconsider the nature of the office. The office existed for
just over ten years and this political and financia! turbulence made me espe­
cially aware of its permanent fragility. That was a shocking awareness ...
1 expected that after an initial 'struggle', when a sceptical reception
was inevitable, after 1 O years of producing projects and making certain
discoveries, there would be a moment when you are treated differently,
both in terms of financia! rewards and in terms of working conditions. lt
became very clear that that theoretical plateau of stability did not exist,
that you were just as much at the merey of political whim, bad temper or
futile and childish disagreement after 1 O years as you were in the very

Empecé a escribir 5,M,L,XL. Pretendía ser algo así como una
purificación, un esfuerzo kamikaze. Era una crítica a ciertos
aspectos de nuestro trabajo, pero también y de forma inevita­
ble, era un análisis de la situación en que se encontraba la
Oficina. Habíamos llegado a una situación en la que el 70-80%
del trabajo que hacíamos se localizaba fuera de Holanda, en
una increíble multiplicidad de países y culturas. Y cuanto más
lejos estábamos del cliente, más difícil era conseguir cobrar;
los contratos tenían un sentido co'!'pletamente diferente según
las diferentes culturas; los clientes y los contratistas trabajaban
en franjas horarias distintas y el control y las comunicaciones
se tornaban en pura confusión... La logística creció de forma
astronómica. Se produjo un efecto de distorsión: por un lado,
la increíble complejidad de las operaciones, por otro, una sen­
sación permanente de fragilidad y de debilidad que me hacía
dudar de la posición de independencia del arquitecto en estas
circunstancias. Y esto no era algo sólo propio de nuestra oficina.
Parecía ser la regla general: los estudios europeos de un cierto
tamaño se encontraban en las mismas condiciones ...
Sabíamos que en Asia existe un tipo de arquitecto que se
asocia con firmas de ingenieros para crear estructuras de mayor
envergadura, lo que nos llegó a parecer una alternativa intere­
sante. Durante el proyecto para el IJ-Oevers en Amsterdam,
tuvimos la ocasión de colaborar con la ingeniería holandesa De
Weger. Se quedaron sorprendidos de nuestra habilidad para

beginning. lt made the prospect of another 20 years of that condition
not very attractive. 1 began to write S,M,L,XL, which was a kind of cleans­
ing, to sorne extent a kamikaze effort. lt was a critique on certain aspects
of the work but also inevitably an analysis of the position of the office. We
had reached a point where 70-80% of our work was outside Holland, in
an incredible multiplicity of countries and cultures. Money is harder to get
the further the client is from the office, contracts mean completely differ­
ent things in different cultures, clients and contractors are working in dif­
ferent time zones and control and communication becomes confusing...
logistics expanded to an astronomical degree. There was a wrenching
effect: on the one hand, the incredible complexity of the operations, on
the other, a persistent sense of fragility and weakness that cast doubts
on the position of the independent architect under these circumstances.
lt was not only our own condition, it seemed to be a general condition:
major European offices were in exactly the same position.
In Asia, there is a model of architects associated with engineering
firms that create larger wholes, and that seemed an interesting alterna­
tive. Already three years ago, Cecil Balmond and I had discussed the
idea of starting an office together, a co-production of OMA and Arup.
Although it seemed plausible, it was finally rejected to avoid a confusion
of mutual identities. During our project for the IJ-Oevers in Amsterdam,

mos. Comenzamos a hablar con ellos hace año y medio y final­
mente llegamos a un acuerdo en el otoño de 1995, por el cual
ellos compran parte de nuestras acciones, participan en la direc­
ción de la compañía, forman una unidad de soporte técnico
para nosotros y colaboramos en varios proyectos, aunque noso­
tros permanecemos como una entidad completamente inde­
pendiente. Aunque son más conocidos por sus trabajos de infra­
estructura, están interesados en el desarrollo de su departa­
mento de edificación. Nuestro atractivo para ellos radica en
nuestra experiencia en materia de infraestructuras: les interesa
la posibilidad de que un arquitecto pueda llegar a tener un papel
en la definición del territorio. Lo que es interesante en esta

nueva situación son las ventajas que tiene para ambas partes.
Nuestra asociación nos permite cubrir un campo más completo,
desde las infraestructuras a la arquitectura, lo que resulta espe­
cialmente atractivo a la vista del desarrollo de ciertas opera­
ciones que están teniendo lugar ahora en Asia. En general, como
arquitectos, siempre nos es difícil tratar con urbanistas e inge­
nieros de infraestructuras; siempre existe una oposición. La
idea de que nuestra colaboración pueda convertirse en una
condición de continuidad entre estos campos resulta tremen­
damente atractiva.
Lo que es interesante de estos cambios es que su práctica como arquitecto
parece actuar como termómetro del clima político y económico. ¿Cuál es su
impresión de la situación actual en Europa?

we collaborated with the Dutch engineering firm De Weger. They were
impressed with our ability to disentangle infrastructure problems; we
were impressed with their willingness to consider what we proposed. We
started talking to them a year and a half ago and finally we reached an
agreement this fall, where they would buy part of our shares, participate
in the management of the company, form a technical support unit for us
and collaborate in several projects, although we remain a completely
autonomous entity. We will, for example, continue to work with Arup. We
would agree on the kind of association we would want to embark on for
a specific project, case by case. De Weger has 700 people in the
Netherlands, offices in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia, and OMA now
has an office in Hong Kong. They are interested now in developing their
building department, although they are best known for infrastructure
works. As you know, this is an area that we have always been incredibly
interested in. Our attraction in their eyes was our experience with infra­
structure, the idea that somehow an architect could play a role in the
definition of territorial conditions. What is interesting about this new situa­
tion is that there are clear advantages for both sides. Our association
allows us to cover the entire field from architecture to infrastructure,
which seems especially attractive in the perspective of certain operations
that now occur in Asia. Usually, as an architect, it is difficult to deal with
planners and infrastructure engineers; there is always an opposition.
The way in which our collaboration might become a kind of seamless
condition is incredibly seductive.
What is interesting in these changes is that your practice as an architect seems
to act as a thermometer of the politica/ and economica/ climate. What is your
impression of the current situation in Europe?

Creo que la situación europea es sencillamente diferente,
más difícil de lo que parecía durante la euforia de los años
ochenta. Quizás fue una euforia auto-inducida, alrededor de
una idea que nunca fue realmente popular, pero que ha dejado
planteadas muchas cuestiones interesantes. Y si podemos
sacar alguna conclusión de los últimos cinco o seis años es
que si las condiciones se deterioran rápidamente, también pue­
den recuperarse con la misma velocidad: puede que se trate mas
de signos de inestabilidad que de declive real. Parte de ello es
la increíble irresponsabilidad, casi frivolidad de los círculos
financieros, que se han convertido por otra parte, en la medida
de todas las cosas. La increíble falta de paciencia de los que
se denominan -cada vez con menor justificación- promoto­
res. Esta. es una de las grandes ironías del momento presente:
los promotores, que son supuestamente la casta que deja su
huella en forma de edificios, están demasiado impacientes o
'febriles' como para mantener sus inversiones durante el tiempo
suficiente para que el edificio comience su construcción, por
no hablar de su finalización. Los cambios de humor de los pro­
motores son ahora como las fluctuaciones del mercado de valo­
res: signos de interés. No existe garantía de que esos signos
se materialicen en algo concreto. Durante los últimos cinco
años, hemos sido testigos de cómo esa excitación se trasladaba
de Berlín a Praga, de allí a Shanghai, luego a Filipinas, y ahora
se está mudando a Indonesia, y quizá luego a la India, y puede
que retorne a Europa vía Africa y la antigua Yugoslavia... En ese
sentido no creo que en esta situación, ningún signo de 'fuerza'
sea permanente; y por tanto, ninguna 'debilidad' definitiva.

1 think that the European condition is simply different, tougher than what
it seemed in the euphoria of the late B0's. Maybe it was a self-induced
euphoria around an idea that was never truly popular. But it has left a
number of interesting challenges that are still in the air. And I think that
if we can draw any conclusion from the last 5 or 6 years, it is that if con­
ditions deteriorate very quickly, they can also return very precipitously.
lt could be more a symptom of instability than a real decline. Part of that
is the incredible irresponsibility, almost frivolity of the economic world,
which is at the same time, the measure of ali things. The incredible lack
of patience of what are called, -with less and less justification-, devel­
opers. That is one of the greatest ironies of the present moment: devel­
opers, who are supposedly the caste that leaves traces in the form of
buildings, are now too impatient or 'feverish' to ever maintain a single
speculation long enough to actually start a building, let alone to finish it.
The 'moods' of developers are now like the fluctuations of the Stock
Market, signs of interest. There is no guarantee that those signs will
produce concrete realisations. Over the past 5 years, we have seen
excitement about Berlin that then shifted to Prague, from there to Shanghai,
then to the Philippines, that is now shifting to Indonesia and that may
shift to India and then come back to Europe via Africa and Yugoslavia..
In that sense I do not think any 'strength' is permanent right now, and
therefore 'weakness' is not definitive either.
Observando su biografía, parece que usted ha desarrollado cierta técnica
para escapar de 'determinaciones estructurales insatisfactorias', emigrando
a climas más benignos cuando era necesario: se mudó a Londres en el 68, a
los Estados Unidos en el 72, volvió a Europa en los 80 ... ¿Es su reciente inte­
rés en Asia una huida de la problemática situación europea?
¡Esta sí que es una curiosa definición de lo 'benigno'! No, no
lo veo en absoluto como una huida. Pero está claro que desde
una perspectiva realista, Asia se ha convertido en 'inevitable'.
Para empezar, nuestro interés en Asia se inició en el año 1987,
cuando tuvimos nuestro primer encargo en Japón: por tanto,
no se trata de una 'conversión' reciente. En Asia, las condicio­
nes son ahora similares a la experiencia que tuvimos en Europa
durante los ochenta: una sensación de identidad emergente.
Hay una cantidad inmensa de inversión: súbita riqueza debida
a una especie de fiebre comercial... Se pueden ver los resulta­
dos en Shanghai. En términos de presencia física, esta pasión
constructora reproduce, sobre todo, modelos americanos degra­
dados, hasta el punto que parece que la 'tipología' final del siglo
veinte fuera a ser el rascacielos, tanto si está en medio de unos
campos de arroz como si se encuentra en plena metrópolis.
Pero existe un modelo de planeamiento mucho más intere­
sante que se remonta a los años sesenta, cuando los metabo­
listas descubrieron la demografía como fuente de inspiración,
cuando se hizo patente que la relación entre el medio urbano
y el medio rural en los países asiáticos sufriría cambios tan
drásticos, que la pura velocidad y los números impondrían un
nuevo concepto de ciudad. En Europa también había gente
como Doxiadis, que con una vaga clarividencia, se dieron cuenta
de esto mismo. Hay consciencia de este problema desde hace
ya treinta años y sin embargo ha sido suprimido por la fasci­
nación que sentimos por los problemas estrictamente arqui­
tectónicos... El post-modernismo es en realidad un hiato donde
los valores 'eternos' de la arquitectura fueron considerados
más críticos que el problema de la demografía. Pero se puede
observar cómo en Singapur, Japón y Corea el tema de la can­
tidad se utilizó de forma extremadamente racional, llegando a
conclusiones nuevas y a la explotación de lo que antes hubiera
sido impensable. Lo que ahora se siente a través de Asia, por
encima del espectacular desarrollo de China, es la apreciación
de que dentro de estas utopías cuantitativas existe una nece­
sidad de redefinición cualitativa de la vida urbana. Y por tanto
aparecen nuevas ambiciones que toman la forma de 'museos'
o 'espacios públicos', es decir, clásicos 'signos' de calidad.
Creo que ha sido aquí donde el post-moderno ha sido más des­
tructivo: puesto que el tema de la cantidad se convirtió en
underground, dejó de estar de moda, perdió su atractivo.
Prácticamente no ha habido casi ningún desarrollo en la inves­
tigación de nuevos programas, tipos, modelos urbanos, teo­
ría... Como no hemos 'inventado' nada que haga frente a la
urgencia demográfica, ahora estamos condena�os a un reciclaje
constante: torres, 'arte', anticuados modelos urbanos ... La pará­
lisis de la invención ha dejado enormes vacíos en culturas que
eran realmente receptivas a anticipar y acoger situaciones y
soluciones radicales, motivadas por un deseo de experimentar.

Looking at your biography, it seems as if you have developed a technique to
escape from 'unsatisfactory structural determinations', by migrating to milder
cliinates when necessary: the move to London in '68, to the States after '72,
back to Europe for the BO's... Is your recent interest in Asia an escape from
this troublesome European situation?
What an interesting definition of 'mildness'! No, 1 don't see it as an
escape at ali. But of course, in a certain realistic way, Asia has become
'inevitable'. First of ali, our 'Asian' campaign dates from 1987, when we
had our first engagement with Japan: it is not a recent 'conversion'. In
Asia, conditions are now similar to those that we experienced in Europe
during the 80's, a sense of emerging identity. There is incredible invest­
ment, sudden wealth is brought by a kind of commercial freak wave...
You can see the results in Shanghai. To the extent that it has achieved
physical embodiment. this constructional rage produces mostly debased
American models, to the point that it seems as if the final 'typology' of
the 20th century is the skyscraper, whether it stands in rice paddies or
in a metropolis.
But I think there is a much more interesting pattern that goes as far
back as the sixties, when the metabolists discovered a source of inspi­
ration in demographics, when it became clear that the relationship be­
tween the city and the country would shift so drastically and abruptly there,
that sheer speed and numbers would impose a new concept of the city.
Of course in Europe there were people like Doxiadis, who with a misty
clairvoyance had the same awareness. There is a 30 year old awareness
of this issue which has been suppressed by the glamour of strictly archi­
tectural problems. Post-modernism is really a hiatus where the 'eternal'
values of architecture were deemed to be more critica! than wrestling with
demographics. But you can see in Singapore, Japan and Korea how the
issue of quantity was dealt with by extremely 'rational' means, leading
to new conclusions and to the exploitation of the previously unthink­
able. What you can sense everywhere in Asia now, beyond the more spec­
tacular development in China, is an awareness that within these quan­
titative utopías there is now a need for a qualitative redefinition of urban
life, and therefore a number of new ambitions that may take the form of
'museums' or 'public spaces', i.e. the classical 'signs' of quality. 1 think
this is where the Post-Modern impasse has been most destructive: since
the issue of quantity went underground, became unfashionable, lost its
'attraction', there has been almost no development or research of new
programs, types, urban models, theory... Since we did not 'invent' any­
thing to match the demographic urgency, we are now condemned to an
endless recycling: towers, 'art', dated forms of urban design... The
paralysis of true invention has left enormous voids in cultures that were
actually highly mobilised to anticipate and welcome radical situations
and solutions, motivated to experiment.
 Creo que estos son temas muy interesantes con los que tra­
bajar, en paralelo a la mas evidente y glamorosa explosión de
rascacielos... nuestro interés por Asia, por tanto, no es en abso­
luto comercial: finalmente, la razón de mi interés en volver a
enseñar de nuevo en Harvard es para poder analizar e inter­
pretar todos estos fenómenos, no sólo profesionalmente, como
arquitecto, sino también desde una perspectiva más intelec­
tual, como una investigación propiamente dicha. Y ésta quizá
es la segunda parte de mi respuesta sobre la nueva situación
en OMA. Desde la misma azarosa perspectiva de la lucha sin
fin como 'simple' arquitecto, sentí que era necesario perseguir
ciertos intereses estrictamente a un nivel académico y otros a
nivel arquitectónico.
Finalmente, mi interés en Asia también está conectado a mi
biografía. Hay una afinidad que se basa simplemente en un
reconocimiento casi subconsciente y que data del tiempo que
pasé cuando era niño en Indonesia.
Es bastante revelador el que su redescubrimiento de la vida académica y lite­
raria se desarrollen en paralelo a su desilusion con la práctica profesional, y
con la reformulación de OMA como una alianza más viable con una organi­
zación mas poderosa. ¿Es esto una capitulación después de intentar cons­
truir una práctica arquitectónica que quería ser todavía experimental o
inventiva? ¿Quiere esto decir que ha perdido la esperanza de desarrollar una
práctica de carácter experimental dentro de la práctica profesional?
¡En absoluto, todo lo contrario! No ha habido desilusión sino
una complejización. Estaba bastante claro que la Oficina debía
cambiar para convertirse en viable. Pero queríamos seguir
haciendo el mismo tipo de trabajo que hemos estado haciendo:
mantener nuestro compromiso con la invención, con la expe­
rimentación ... o mejor, con la redefinición, que es quizá un
concepto más interesante que el de experimentación ...
Seguimos totalmente comprometidos en esto y creo que no
hay en absoluto ningún signo de capitulación: para sobrevi­
vir tuvimos que cambiar las condiciones de trabajo, imaginar
otras formas de organización. No es que deseásemos la esta­
bilidad para podernos permitir una vida más fácil, sino por el
contrario, para poder ser capaces de continuar con nuestras
especulaciones ...
Su trabajo está muy bien considerado, tanto entre los profesionales como
entre los círculos académicos, quizá gracias a ciertas condiciones estructu­
rales que se daban en Europa y que hacían posible el desarrollar una prácti­
ca relevante en ambos campos. Ahora, cuando esas condiciones han
desaparecido, usted divide su actividad en dos frentes, la investigación espe­
culativa en el ámbito académico, y una estructura profesional más pragmá­
tica y más eficiente, técnica y económicamente. Esto parece un 'modelo a
escala' de la condición esquizofrénica del sistema profesional americano,
dividido radicalmente entre la especulación en el ámbito académico, y la prác­
tica bajo unas condiciones legales y financieras increíblemente estrictas que
dejan muy poco espacio para producir avances cualitativos.
No, está mas relacionado con el tipo de 'trabajo' que hace el
arquitecto. Su labor puede ser tan exigente, tan poco sofisti-

became interested in teaching at Harvard again is to analyse and inter­
pret this whole phenomenon, not only as an office, in work, in architec­
ture, but also more intellectually, as research. And this is maybe the
second part of a response about the new conditions of the office. In the
same ominous perspective of the endless struggle as a 'mere' architect,
1 felt it was necessary to pursue certain interests strictly on an academ­
ic level and other interests on an architectural level.
Finally, my interest in Asia is also connected to my biography. There
is an affinity simply based on an almost subconscious recognition which
dates back to the time I spent in Indonesia as a child.
lt is quite revealing that your rediscovery of academia and writing happens in
para/le/ to your disil/usion with the practice, and the reformulation of the of­
fice as a more viable alliance with a large organisation. Is this a capitulation
after trying to construct an architectural practise they may sti/1 be experimental
or inventive? Does this mean that you have /ost faith in developing a kind of
experimental practice in reality?
On the contrary, far from it! 1 think it is exactly the opposite. There was
no disillusion, just complication. lt was relatively clear how the practice
would have to change to become a viable practice. But I wanted to keep
doing the kind of work that we have been doing, committed to inven­
tion and experiment... to redefinition which is maybe more interesting than
experiment as a concept. .. We remain fully committed to that and I think
that there is absolutely no trace of capitulation: to survive, we had to
change the conditions of work, to imagine other forms of organisation.
lt is not that we were craving stability so that we could have an easier
life, but on the contrary to be able to continue our speculations.
Your work is very we/1 considered amongst both practitioners and academics,
which was perhaps encouraged by certain structural conditions in Europe that
facilitated operation between the two domains. Now, when these conditions
have vanished, you are splitting your activity into two fronts: speculative re­
search in the academia, and a more pragmatic, technical/y and financial/y effi­
cient professional structure. lt is as if you were creating a sea/e model of the
schizophrenic condition of the American professional system, where peop/e
are determined to either speculate in the academia or to practise under incred­
ibly strict legal and financia/ /aws that make the production of breakthroughs
very difficult.
No, it is more related to the 'work' of the architect itself. lt can be so
relentless, so simple-minded, so 'primitive' in its almost 'bestial' candi-

ación de cierta forma de conocimiento, o de entorno significativo...
Los asiáticos se han hecho muy ricos, o han tenido mucho
éxito, o se han organizado muy bien. Algunos de ellos sólo quie­
ren hacerse más ricos, otros quieren hacer algo con los nue­
vos medios que tienen a su disposición y algunos otros son
auténticos visionarios... Quizá el hallazgo de Asia hoy esté en
unas condiciones similares a la invención de Europa durante los
últimos años ochenta: cómo articular todos estos logros den­
tro del entorno construido, y cómo capturar, a un nivel sofisti­
cado, lo que es creativo en Asia.

My relationship with the University is not to create financia! stability but
to create a platform which allows us to abstain from commercial work.
We have 20 cities in China at our doorstep that we all turned down. 1
do not believe at this moment that those could be legitimate projects.
Although I find it fascinating, 1 do not believe in what is going on in China
at this moment. lt is very destructive and will be utterly regretted. In
retrospect, the University allows us to develop research without the dis­
tortion of the commercial interest that architecture inevitably brings in its
wake, the obligation to 'do something'.
Your interest in Asia is therefore more in the type of opportunities where devel­
opment is not about so/ving demographics but about the generation of some
kind of knowledge, or significant environment. ..
Asians have become very rich, or very successful or very well organ­
ised. Sorne just want to become richer, others want to do something with
the new means at their disposal; sorne are outright visionaries .. Maybe
the invention of Asia today is a similar condition to the invention of Europe
in the late SO's: how to articulate all these achievements in the built envi­
ronment, and how to capture on a sophisticated level what is creative
in Asia.

arquitectura -que en otras condiciones hubiéramos conside­
rado copia degenerada del mundo occidental- allí ha sido en
realidad interpretada y concebida por los arquitectos locales
como arquitectura asiática. He descubierto que en estos pro­
cesos hubo una influencia muy importante de los metabolistas
durante los años sesenta... Lo que es asiático aquí es la com­
plejidad de los programas, las mezclas, las densidades que lle­
gan mucho mas allá de nuestros sueños europeos más salva­
jes. Por ejemplo, el atrio, que aquí solo alcanza una forma bas­
tante degradada, adquiere en alguno de los edificios de Singapur
auténtico potencial como espacio público. Comprar es una acti­
vidad que aquí es decadente, un signo de una sociedad que se
está anquilosando. Pero en Asia, comprar es en realidad una de
las actividades públicas más respetables históricamente. Hay
muchas razones para entender esta forma de actividad pública
como una condición específicamente asiática.

You just said that you are more interested in redefining than in experimenting.
Your statements, whether in Delirious New York or in your text about Singapore
or Atlanta, are more re-descriptions of facts than projective statements in the
traditional sense. So, is this invention of Europe first and of Asia now, a kind
of interpretation of existing features more than a creation ex novo?
lt has to do with interpretation; for instance if you take Singapore,
at a first glance it is really in fairly good shape: an interesting, exotic
place with colossal housing estates has become completely western­
ised; in other words, completely banal. But there is more. What is fas­
cinating is that the architecture that in other conditions we would have
considered a decadent western rip-off was actually interpreted and
conceived there as Asian architecture by the local architects. 1 discov­
ered that there has been a really strong influence of the metabolists
during the 60's... What is Asian about it is the complexity of the pro­
grammes, the mixes, the densities that are beyond our wildest dreams
here in Europe. For instance, the atrium, that we only know here in an
extremely debased form, achieves in sorne of the buildings in Singapore
a real potential as public space. Shopping is an activity which we can
only see here as decadent, a sign of society becoming more stag­
nant. But in Asia, shopping is simply a more respectably public activ­
ity, actually, a historie activity. There is every reason to interpret it as
a specific Asian condition.
Me pregunto si estas lecturas alcanzan realmente un valor instrumental para
la producción real de arquitectura o de urbanismo. ¿No cree que el conjun­
to de técnicas que finalmente utilizamos para producir arquitectura son al
final más decisivas que la redescripción de los hechos?
Quizá para otros, no necesariamente para nosotros. Para mí
la interpretación es el detonador tanto de nuevas formas de
instrumentalidad, como de nuevos contenidos. Hay un desfase
interesante entre lo que puedes hacer en términos puramente
intelectuales y lo que puedes hacer como arquitecto. La dife­
rencia esencial es que un arquitecto puede 'pensar' sólo en
forma de nueva y mayor cantidad de arquitectura. No importa
cuan inteligente pueda ser, -él o ella-, la obligación de ser ope­
rativo le da a cualquier producto de este régimen una irrelevancia
esencial. Asia provoca una avidez casi obscena por construir
con la que quiero ser capaz de mantenerme a una cierta dis­
tancia. Pronto estaremos trabajando en un encargo para una
Fábrica del Futuro en Singapur. Estamos aún intentando defi­
nir lo que significa, y esto nos permite pensar a otro nivel.
Está describiendo las condiciones emergentes en Asia como una búsqueda
de un entorno urbano de mayor calidad. Sin embargo este fenómeno parece
estar produciendo también un fuerte interés en la recuperación de la espe­
cificidad local asiática. ¿Qué piensa de los intentos de revivir directamente
ciertas tradiciones culturales, en forma casi concreta? ¿Son estas recupera­
ciones adecuadas para enfrentarse a estos retos? ¿Cómo piensa que esta
identidad emergente puede ser identificada o construida?
Está claro que las ambiciones actuales de una nueva identi­
dad asiática no siempre se realizan de forma apropiada. Si lo
quieres caricaturizar, oscilan entre la adopción de formas occi­
dentales, completamente obsoletas, de espacios Públicos, arte
Público, vida Pública... con P mayúscula, o el recurrir a un voca­
bulario casi extinguido de emblemas asiáticos, resucitados a
una escala enorme, con parecido efecto demoledor. Si multi­
plicas muerte por muerte, no consigues vida. Respecto a esto,
veo poca diferencia entre el nivel de ansiedad en Europa y en
Asia. Hay la misma obsesión de encontrar las huellas que pue­
dan generar una presencia del contexto y de la historia a pesar
de los nuevos comienzos, y dar pistas sobre qué direcciones
deberían seguir los nuevos desarrollos... En el fondo, creo que
esta búsqueda de expresiones vernáculas explícitas y de ele­
mentos históricos es tan kitsch en el Este como en el Oeste. La
referencia al contexto y a la historia no son nunca suficiente­
mente plausibles o auténticas. Es ahí donde creo que pode­
mos contribuir como arquitectos europeos, porque acabamos
de pasar por una fase similar y podemos atestiguar del tre­
mendo fraude en que se ha convertido.
Es mucho más interesante descubrir lo que hoy es auténtico
en Asia. Ese es el origen de mi obsesión por mirar la arquitec­
tura que allí se ha desarrollado durante los últimos treinta años,
por encontrar los signos de una autenticidad asiática. Si ele­
vas algo sobre pilotis en Europa, obtienes un vacío; en Singapur
cualquier cosa que se eleve del suelo se llena inmediatamente
con formas de vida pública, una especie de invasión multitudi-

But / wonder whether these readings are actual/y becoming instrumental in
any sense for the real production of architecture or urbanism. Do you not think
that the set of techniques we use for the production of architecture are ulti­
mately more decisive than the re-description of facts?
Maybe for others, not necessarily for us. For me the interpretation is
what triggers both the instrumentality and the new contents. There is an
interesting phase difference between what you can do in pure intellec­
tual terms and as an architect. The essential difference is that an archi­
tect can 'think' only in the form of new and more architecture. He or she
may be very smart, but that compulsion, whether or not it is operation­
al, gives everything an essential dumbness. Asia provokes an almost ob­
scene greed to build. 1 want to be able to keep a distance. We may
soon be working in a commission far a factory of the future in Singapore.
We are trying to define what it means, and that allows us to contact
other levels of thinking there.
You are describing emerging conditions in Asia as a search for a more quali­
tative urban environment. However this phenomenon a/so seems to be pro­
ducing a very strong interest in the recovery of a local Asian specificity. What
do you think of the attempts to revive certain cultural traditions in a very direct,
almost concrete fashion? Are these revivals necessarily the best way to face
the challenge? How do you think that this emerging identity can be identified
or constructed?
lt is clear that the present ambitions of a new Asian identity are not
always properly implemented. lf you want to caricature them, they oscil­
late between either the adoption of completely superseded forms of
western Public space, Public art, Public life... , with capital P, or the
resort to an extinguished vocabulary of these Asian emblems, which are
now resurrected at a huge scale, also with the same deadly effect. lf you
multiply one death with another death, you still do not get life. In that sense,
1 see little difference in the anxiety level in Europe or Asia. There is an
obsession with finding the traces that might generate a presence of
context and history in spite of new beginnings, and give clues to direc­
tions that new beginnings should take ... Ultimately, 1 think that this is as
kitsch in the West as the search far explicit vernacular expressions and
historical elements is in the East. The reference to context and history
can never be sufficiently plausible or authentic.
That is exactly where I think that we can contribute as European archi­
tects. We have a lot to say here because we have just been through a
similar phase and we have seen the grotesque fiasco that it has become.
lt is far more interesting to discover what it is authentic in Asia now.
This is the origin of my obsession to look at the architecture that has been
developed there over the last 30 years- to look for signs of authentic
Asianness. lf you lift things on pilotis in Europe, you get a void; In
Singapore anything that is lifted off the ground is immediately filled with
forms of public life, a kind of swarming invasion of 'Chineseness'.

que acarreaban carne y fuego en equilibrio sobre los hombros,
y circulaban por la ciudad montando restaurantes instantáneos
en cualquier sitio. Esto también ocurre en Singapur y coexiste
con las promociones de viviendas Corbuserianas. La belleza
de estos procesos radica en cómo estas etapas históricas tie­
nen lugar de forma simultánea, no de forma secuencial como
en Europa. Hay calles en Seúl donde primero ves edificios de
cinco plantas iluminados con neón, luego das un giro de noventa
grados y son de dos plantas -iluminados con bombillas col­
gadas de un cable- y luego, giras otros noventa grados y de
repente, todo se convierte en barro y cartón. Esto, claro, es un
modelo completamente diferente de la metrópolis que hemos
construido en Occidente. En Occidente, siempre hay una homo­
geneidad globalizadora. En Asia la belleza está en la simulta­
neidad en el tiempo. En Kuala Lumpur lo que es particularmente
asiático es la falta de ansiedad por la coexistencia de elemen­
tos completamente diferentes, en relaciones claramente defi­
nidas, a través de el 'paisaje'. También hay otras invenciones
producidas por factores puramente económicos. En Tokio pue­
des encontrar áreas robotizadas increíbles, en las inmediacio­
nes del aeropuerto, donde se tiene la sensación de estar en
una ciudad del futuro, hecha como un deposito de contenedo-
res, con muy escasa presencia humana. Este es otro área donde
la capacidad asiática o el éxito asiático se transforma en un
modelo capaz de generar nuevas autenticidades.
¿Es decir, que para usted hay una construcción histórica con la que es impor­
tante lidiar ... ? ¿Una construcción radicalmente antimoderna, contextual y
anti-tabula rasa... ?
Me resisto a la noción de que la globalización conlleva a la
homogeneización. El mismo proceso de modernización con­
duce en cada lugar a resultados diferentes, a nuevas especifi­
cidades, a nuevas singularidades. Incluso si escarbas la tierra,
la 'pizarra' no estará nunca completamente limpia, porque hay
una historia previa: la gente que en algún momento vivió allí, que
vivirá allí en un futuro, las nuevas comunidades que traerán
singularidades ... La ironía es que la obsesión con la historia y
la especificidad se han convertido en un obstáculo en el reco­
nocimiento de estas nuevas realidades.
Hay un dominio de manipulación increíblemente interesante
que es, precisamente, el de los motivos iconográficos asiáticos.
En las Viviendas de Fukuoka, por ejemplo, trabajamos abierta­
mente con estas semánticas, utilizando kitsch japonés de la
peor especie. Usamos hormigón moldeado como si se tratase
del perímetro mural de un castillo japonés donde el 'basamento'
estuviera levitando. Esto se convirtió en el tema fundamental
de nuestro edificio. Fue recibido con sorpresa, en parte posi-

lt is not only the effects of authoritarian regimes or the Confucian
politeness of the inhabitants, or whatever stories we have developed to
explain it. lt is simply the amazing efficiency and persistence of an Asian
model of completely formless and undefined public activity that can infil­
trate anywhere. In Indonesia they used to have these people that would
carry meat and fire balanced on their shoulders, and they would walk
through the city and trigger instant restaurants. lt also exists in Singapore
and it can coexist with the Corbusian housing estates. The beauty of this
is how all these 'stages' occur simultaneously, not in a sequence.
There are streets in Seoul where first you see 5-storey blocks lit with
neon, then, you turn 90 degrees and it becomes two stories lit with light
bulbs on a string and then, you turn 90 degrees again and it becomes
suddenly mud and cardboard. This is a completely different model of the
metropolis from what we have constructed in the West. In the West,
there is always totalising homogeneity. In Asia the beauty is temporal simul­
taneity. In Kuala Lumpur what is particularly Asian is the very lack of
anxiety about the coexistence of completely different elements in clear­
ly defined relationships, held together by 'landscape'. Then there are
also inventions triggered simply by their economies. In Tokyo you can
find these incredible robotic zones near the airport and the coast and
you have a sense of an almost futuristic city of pure containers parking
there with very little human inhabitation. This is another area where the
Asian competence or the Asian success mutates into a model capable
of generating new authenticities.
You are somehow implying that there is a historical construction that is impor­
tant to deal with. . . Which is a radical/y anti-modern, contextual, anti-tabula
rasa statement...
1 am resisting the notion that globalisation leads to homogeneity. The
same process of modernisation leads everywhere to different results, to
new specificities, new uniqueness. Even if you can scrape the earth, the
slate will not be absolutely clean, because there is previous history, the
people who lived there once, who will live there in the future and the new
communities that will bring specificities. The irony is that the obsession
with history and specificity has become an obstacle in the recognition
of these new realities.
There is also an incredibly interesting territory of manipulation which
is exactly those Asian motifs. For instance in the housing for Fukuoka,
we definitely worked on those semantics by using the cheapest kind of
Japanese kitsch. We used concrete moulded as if it was the wall of a
Japanese castle where the 'base' was lifted off the ground to became
a theme of our building. lt was received with shock, partly good and
partly bad... people were really furious about our tampering with the
genetic material of Japanese architecture.

¿Cómo se relaciona este interés en los juegos semánticos, en el juego con
los significantes, con su interés en la demografía, en la infraestructura, en la
ingeniería social... y en demás temas 'estructurales'?
Tendríamos que volver al impulso metabolista y al descubri­
miento, compartido en todo el mundo durante los años sesenta,
de que similares demografías alarmantes podrían ser un argu­
mento convincente para empezar de cero, para emplear la
'tabula rasa'. Pero hay un vínculo entre la 'tabula rasa' y el sig­
nificado: el significado de la 'tabula rasa'.
Aquí hay una divergencia drástica entre el Este y el Oeste: en
el mundo occidental, descubrimos muy pronto que la 'tabula
rasa' o bien conduce a convulsiones sociales, o bien a drásti­
cas sectorizaciones de población tipo 'gueto'. En el Oeste, tuvi­
mos que arrasar partes enteras de ciudad antes de llegar a
entenderlo; en cambio en el Este, la ciudad es mucho más débil,
más provisional ...

Why ignore the fact that Asia is a field of the most incredibly rich
semantic permutations? Themes are raised for the wrong reasons by the
wrong people in the wrong places, but that allows you an enormous
choice in terms of the kind of statements that you can make...
How does this interest in semantic games, in playing with signifiers, relate to
your interest in demographics, infrastructure, social engineering... and other
'structural' subjects?
We have to go back to the metabolist impulse and the discovery,
shared in the early 60's worldwide, that similar alarming demographics
were a compelling argument for starting from scratch, for the 'tabula
rasa'. But there is a connection between 'tabula rasa' and meaning, i.e.
the meaning of the 'tabula rasa'. There is a drastic divergence: in the
Western world, we discovered very early on that it leads to either social
upheavals or to drastic ghettoisation. In the West, we had to scrape
clean entire sections of cities; in the East. the city is much more flimsy,
more provisional ..
lt is clear that in Tokyo, Seoul and Singapore there are massive deve­
lopments that have been constructed in times when in the West there
was almost no comparable rate of construction. The form of operating

tivos pueden dar lugar a avances cualitativos, significativos, o a mutaciones
que superan la presencia de la historia o la localización? ¿Es 'Bigness' una
forma de condición 'estructural' para el cambio?

outrun the semantic.
To put it simply, both the need in Japan to have traditional motifs, and
the need in the West, -even in the most sophisticated neo-modernist
circles-, to amplify or make resonant traces of a past occupation show
the same inability to read the present construction as authentic. They
are both crutches or reinforcements of authenticity, or donors of past
authenticity that seem to be necessary because whatever we construct
is never authentic. We are becoming blind to an enormous domain of
authenticity that unfolds befare our eyes and that, simply because it has
none of the explicit references, becomes inaccessible to us.
In terms of this potential search for specificities that is not yet visual or ma­
terial, that is not even concrete, -like demographics, economic growth, inter­
national markets... - how does this connect to the issue of bigness that yo_u
have been writing about? Is Bigness a case where purely quantitative deve­
lopments may lead into qualitative, significant breakthroughs, or mutations
that overcome the presence of history or locality? Again a kind of 'structural'
condition for change?
Bigness was also written as a reassurance. 1 think that Bigness is
useful in terms of counteracting the obsession with traces and ghosts,

lo sublime.
Pero, ¿no cree que la semántica es cada vez menos relevante dentro de las

argument, is to be alert to the delicacies that can exist within that bureau­
cratic, instrumentalised world. Perhaps those monolithic forms, which
apparently threaten us, are more authentic and generate more differ­
ence than context-specific attitudes, than the most scrupulous frag­
mentation can ever generate.
There is an enormous denial of these operations on the one hand, and
an enormous inevitability on the other. And given these large-scale demo­
graphics, we can expect a continuing need for large-scale structures that
will need architectural instruments that are inarticulate in the classical sense
of the discipline. My text investigates whether the inevitable contains
the sublime.
But do you not think that semantics a/so becomes increasingly less relevant
in conditions of rapid change, growth, or information excess, because mean­
ings or signs tend to become obsolete very quick/y? In this context, would it
not be more relevant to revea/ emerging structures, to construct or generate
rather than represent? Do you not think that the real potentia/ of 'Bigness' and
the 'Generic City' is the replacement of semantics and signification as rel­

que admitir que S,M,L,XL es en parte un libro sobre experiencias.
Había proclamado la legitimidad de hacer surfing... sentía que
debía de describir qué sensación producía y dónde terminaba.
El propósito principal de este libro es la accesibilidad y la des­
mitificación; en primer lugar, de la arquitectura; y sentí que no
podría llegar lejos si de alguna forma no me incluía en la des­
mitificación, si no me exponía. Si la arquitectura es problemática,
yo formo parte de ella, a pesar de mis intentos por disimularlo ...
After a while, 1 noticed that too. In the beginning, 1 was alarmed and
tried to resist. 1 infinitely prefer the apparent discretion of the ghost writ­
er. But then I had to admit that S, M, L, XL is partly a book about experi­
ences. 1 had proclaimed the legitimacy of surfing.. 1 felt I had to de­
scribe how it felt and where it ended. The main ambition of this book is
