These compounds that in the lower atmosphere are inert and long-lived (several decades),
reaching the stratospheric level lose their chemical stability and react effectively with the
ozone, consuming it.
ozone is a secondary pollutant, ie not emitted directly into the atmosphere by a source, but
formed from photochemical reactions (activated by sunlight) between primary pollutants.
Specifically, ozone forms when nitrogen oxides (NOx), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and
intense solar radiation coexist over a sufficiently long period of time (a minimum of several hours).
Thus, the typical period of the ozone maxima coincides with spring and summer. The main ozone
precursors (NOx and VOC) are emitted naturally or as a consequence of human activities.
What are Nitrogen Oxides?
Nitrogen oxides are a mixture of gases composed of nitrogen and oxygen. Nitrogen monoxide and
nitrogen dioxide are two of the most toxic nitrogen oxides; neither of them are flammable and are
colorless to brown in appearance at room temperature. Nitrogen monoxide is a sweet-smelling
gas penetrating at room temperature, while nitrogen dioxide has a strong unpleasant odor.
Nitrogen dioxide is a liquid at room temperature, but it is transformed into a brown-red gas at
temperatures above 70 F.
Nitrogen oxides are released into the air from the exhaust of motor vehicles, from the combustion
of coal, oil, or natural gas, and during processes such as arc welding, galvanoplasty, metal
engraving and dynamite detonation. They are also produced commercially by reacting nitric acid
with metals or with cellulose.
Nitrogen oxides are used in the production of nitric acid, lacquers, tinctures and other chemicals.
Nitrogen oxides are used in rocket fuels, in the nitrification of organic chemicals and in the
manufacture of explosives.
Nitrogen dioxide can become air in nitric acid, which causes water falling from the clouds to
become toxic, a phenomenon commonly known as "acid rain" and causing serious damage to
nature and buildings. Also, nitrogen oxides can react with volatile organic compounds and produce
the so-called terrestrial or tropospheric ozone, because it is located in this lowest layer of the
atmosphere. While ozone in the upper atmosphere protects us from lethal ultraviolet rays,
tropospheric ozone is a dangerous toxic agent that destroys plants, irritates respiratory tract and
turns into a greenhouse gas. In summer the greatest increase in the concentration of this type of
ozone occurs, by the increase of the intensity of the sunlight and the reactions with the volatile
hydrocarbons that come from the exhaust of the vehicles. In addition, it has recently been known
thanks to a study by a team of European researchers that nitrogen oxides are the cause of "good"
ozone reduction.
As for health, nitrogen dioxide can affect the respiratory system, irritates the skin and mucous
membranes, increases the predisposition to viral infections, slows growth and causes various
injuries.
The typical symptoms of acute intoxication are burning and tearing of the eyes and cough, which
can even cause death
According to a study in Norway, which showed that pollution of the circulation increased the risk
of lung cancer, nitrogen oxide levels could serve as an indicator of the presence of particles and
other carcinogens in the air.
Reducing such emissions can therefore contribute to the improvement of the environment and
the health of citizens. In this regard, for example, car manufacturers are increasingly concerned
about developing technologies that limit the expulsion of such gases, as in diesel engines. In the
case of another of the main emitters of this type of gases, thermal plants, there are also
technologies, such as the so-called "Selective Catalytic Reduction", which contributes to reduce
the amount of nitrogen oxide generated during the combustion.
