Se conoce como electrostática a una
rama de la Física que estudia los efectos
producidos en los cuerpos como
consecuencia de sus cargas eléctricas, o
lo que es lo mismo, el comportamiento
de las cargas eléctricas en situación de
equilibrio. Dicha carga eléctrica es la
responsable de los efectos
electrostáticos (de atracción o de
repulsión) que se generan entre los
cuerpos que la poseen.
El objeto de estudio de la electrostática 
es, pues, la electricidad estática. Ésta se
define como el fenómeno producido entre
dos cuerpos que han acumulado una
carga eléctrica, ya sea por inducción o
por fricción, y que luego la descargan al
entrar en contacto, generando distintos
tipos de reacción.
Carga eléctrica por frotación.
Determinados objetos pueden cargarse
eléctricamente tras ser frotados el uno
contra el otro, ya que este contacto
despoja de los electrones externos a uno
y los transfiere al otro, energéticamente
favorable. Este objeto queda, así,
cargado electronegativamente, mientras
que el otro queda cargado
electropositivamente. Esto será mucho
más potente si los materiales frotados
son aislantes.
Carga eléctrica por inducción. Otro
mecanismo de carga de electricidad
estática requiere del contacto entre un
material ya cargado
electronegativamente y otro sin cargar. El
contacto físico ocasiona que el objeto sin
carga se polarice: los electrones

las cargas positivas, y al otro las
negativas. Luego se pone la regla en
medio de las dos esferas ,siendo las dos
atraídas por el mismo , adquiriendo de
esta manera el mismo potencial, como
las dos están cargadas con la misma
polarización se observa como entonces
se repelen entre sí, debido a que están
cargadas entre si con la misma
polaridad, intentando no tocarse entre sí,
y es aquí donde aparece la fuerza entre
las dos, fuerza de repulsión gobernada
por la ley de coulomb.
