4. Lee este diálogo. Cambia las expresiones en negrita por expresiones idiomáticas. Atención a
los cambios gramaticales.
6. Vais a representar el diálogo solo con mímica delante de la clase. Vuestros compañeros tienen
que adivinar qué expresiones idiomáticas habéis usado. Cuando les toque el turno a vuestros
compañeros, intentad adivinar las expresiones que utilizan.
Teaching notes
Starter: Revision of parts of the body (launch the Yes/No interactive by going to
www.teachitlanguages.co.uk, entering the resource number 22396 into the quick search box and
clicking on the yellow star icon).
Activity 1: Elicit what the term ‘idiomatic expression’ means and ask students to come up with
idiomatic expressions in English with parts of the body (e.g. to cost an arm and a leg; to lend a
hand; to have your head in the clouds etc.).
Activity 2: Students fill in the blanks with the correct part of the body using the picture clues to
help them. Students should then try to guess what the expressions might mean.
Activity 3: Students match the definitions with the idiomatic expressions from activity 2, checking
for an equivalent in English (or their mother tongue, if it’s not English).
Activity 4: Students swap the highlighted phrases in the dialogue for a suitable idiomatic
expression from activity 3.
Activity 5: Students – in pairs or small groups – write a dialogue using at least five idiomatic
expressions from the list.
Activity 6: Each pair/group acts out their dialogue in front of the class. They are not allowed to
say anything but can only mime their dialogue. The other students try to guess which idiomatic
expressions they are using and note them down. This can be done as a competitive activity
(whoever guesses the most expressions correctly wins).
Charades: To help memorise the idiomatic expressions, students could get into groups (or divide
the whole class into two teams) and play charades, acting out each phrase by miming the words so
that their team can guess. This can be done as an introduction to the expressions themselves, so
students have to mime each individual word in order to form the correct expression. Alternatively,
it can be used as a plenary game.
Pictionary: Students draw a picture for each idiom (e.g. for lavar el cerebro, the picture of a
washing machine with a brain inside it) while the other students try to guess the expression.
Pelmanism: Cut out the cards below to be laid face-down on students’ desks. They can then play
pelmanism by taking turns to turn over two cards in an attempt to find all the pairs of cards.
