Party time. Time to be with family. Time of gifts, feasts and celebrations. This
is Christmas in most of the world. But in each place they have their own
traditions, and although surely yours seem the best, surely you can learn a little
about how others celebrate Christmas. How to celebrate this holiday in the
UK? Do you spend family days? Will they eat nougat like us? Do you ride the
nativity scenes so typical in Spain?
Well, the British live Christmas in a very intense way, and here we have the
most entrenched traditions at this time among your British friends. The British
take decoration very seriously. The tinsel, garlands, bells and mistletoe can not
be missing in any house. The gardens are also frequently adorned with lights,
reindeer and snowmen. And of course, the star decoration element: the
Christmas tree, under which Santa will leave the gifts of the whole family. In
addition to decorating the house, the British love to write and send cards, and
Christmas is the perfect excuse to do so. At present, if you visit any house in
the United Kingdom on this date we find the mantelpiece and the living room
furniture is always full of cards from family and friends. One of the elements
that there is almost no lack of house in which there are children is the Advent
calendar. Children open a box every day from December 1 to 24 and eat the
chocolate inside. In many houses they also have the variety of the advent
calendar for the dog, with a cookie for each day.
What do they eat?
Christmas Eve as we understand it in Spain is not celebrated. This day is very
typical will stay with family or friends, to finalize Christmas shopping or
prepare gifts. On Christmas day the family gathers to make a great meal.
Before eating, diners open Christmas cookies, which contain a gift or a
message inside and, once done, eat! And no, they do not have nougat, much
less marzipan, but the most typical at this time is the Christmas pudding, a cake
made of nuts and brandy accompanied by cream or butter. Inside it contains
raisins, almonds, cinnamon, lemon, currants and fruit peels. And after lunch,
at 3 p.m., turn on the TV to watch the Queen of England's speech on the BBC.
