Work
Carolina writes an email to her friend about
work:
"Hi Cristina, I am sorry I haven’t called you
for so long. How are you? How is your new
apartment? I have been very busy at work. I
arrive at the office at 7 am and leave at
around 6:30 pm. I just get half an hour for
lunch and a five-minute break in the morning
and in the afternoon. I am very tired when I
get home so I just eat, watch some television
and go to bed. In the office, I am on the
phone all day, listening to customer
complaints and entering them into our
computer system. At the end of the day I
have to write a summary of all the calls I
received during the day and give my boss a
status on the complaints that are not yet
resolved. I do not know how much longer I
can do this. I need a vacation, or even better,
I need another job! I’ll call you this weekend.

Carolina escribe un correo electrónico (email)
a su amiga acerca del trabajo:
"Hola Cristina, siento no haberte llamado por
tanto tiempo. ¿Cómo estás? ¿Cómo está tu
nuevo apartamento? He estado muy ocupada
en el trabajo. Llego a la oficina a las 7 am y
me voy alrededor de las 6:30 pm. Sólo tengo
media hora para el almuerzo y un descanso
de cinco minutos en la mañana y en la tarde.
Estoy muy cansada cuando llego a casa así
que sólo como, veo algo de televisión y me
voy a la cama. En la oficina, estoy en el
teléfono todo el día, escuchando las quejas
de los clientes y entrándolas en nuestro
sistema de computadoras. Al final del día
tengo que escribir un resumen de todas las
llamadas que recibí durante el día y darle a
mi jefe un informe de las quejas que no se
han resuelto todavía. No sé cuanto tiempo
más pueda hacer esto. Necesito unas
vacaciones, o mejor aún, ¡necesito otro
trabajo! Te llamaré este fin de semana.

The team is exhausted. They sit in silence in
the locker room, waiting for their coach. It is
halftime and they don’t know what to do.
They are losing 28 – 0. The coach staggers
in. He stinks of smoke and whiskey and his
shirt has a big yellow stain on it. He raises
his hand and yells “SILENCE!! I CANNOT
UNDERSTAND ANYTHING IF YOU ALL TALK
AT THE SAME TIME!!” The players look at
each other confused. No one had said
anything.
“Now, everyone be seated and listen to me.
We can still win this game. Just keep
defending and… you know… scoring. That’s
the beauty of basketball. A twenty-eight point
lead is NOTHING!! Now… if you gentlemen
will excuse me…” He walks over to the
restroom, goes in and shuts the door. The
players hear a loud thud and assume that he
has passed out. No one says a word. They
look at their captain. He stands up and
speaks to the team. “Well…we should have
mentioned that we were playing soccer and
not basketball… but I guess it’s too late now.
So, what can I say? Let’s go out there and do
our best to limit the humiliation. Okay?”

El equipo está agotado. Ellos se sientan en
silencio en el vestidor, esperando a su
entrenador. Es el medio tiempo y no saben
qué hacer. Están perdiendo 28 – 0. El
entrenador entra tambaleándose. Él apesta a
humo y whisky y su camisa tiene una gran
mancha amarilla. Levanta la mano y grita
"¡SILENCIO! ¡NO PUEDO ENTENDER NADA SI
TODOS USTEDES HABLAN AL MISMO
TIEMPO!” Los jugadores se miran
confundidos. Nadie había dicho nada.
"Ahora, todos siéntense y escúchenme.
Todavía podemos ganar este partido. Sólo
sigan defendiéndose y… ustedes saben…
sigan anotando. Eso es lo bonito del
baloncesto. ¡Una ventaja de veintiocho
puntos es NADA! Ahora... si ustedes
caballeros me disculpan..." Él camina hacia el
baño, entra y cierra la puerta. Los jugadores
escuchan un ruido sordo y asumen que se ha
desmayado. Nadie dice una palabra. Ellos
miran a su capitán. Él se levanta y se dirige
al equipo. "Bueno... deberíamos haber
mencionado que estábamos jugando fútbol y
no baloncesto... pero supongo que ahora es
demasiado tarde. Así que, ¿qué puedo decir?
Salgamos y hagamos nuestro mejor esfuerzo
por limitar la humillación. ¿De acuerdo?"

Jacob takes the ladder and leans it against
the tree. He starts to climb up and tries not
to look down. He cannot believe he is doing
this. His neighbor’s cat climbed up the tree in
front of the house and cannot climb down.
Now normally, Jacob would not offer to
rescue a cat in a tree. He is afraid of heights,
ladders and cats. But his neighbor, Anita, is
gorgeous and rescuing her cat would be the
perfect way to be a hero and get her
attention.
He is almost there. The ladder begins to
shake and he looks down and realizes how
high he is. He looks at his beautiful neighbor
and decides that it is not worth it. He screams
loudly “HELP!!! I’M FALLING!!!” The cat
suddenly jumps from the tree onto his head.
They both fall to the ground and the cat runs
to her owner. Anita runs to Jacob, who is lying
on the ground.
“Thank you so much”, she says. “That was
very heroic! I hope you are not hurt.”
“It was nothing”, he whispers. “By the way, if
it’s not too much trouble, would you be so
kind as to call me an ambulance?”
Mascotas
Jacob toma la escalera y la recuesta contra el
árbol. Él empieza a subir y trata de no mirar
hacia abajo. No puede creer que está
haciendo esto. El gato de su vecina se subió
al árbol en frente de la casa y no se puede
bajar. Ahora normalmente, Jacob no
ofrecería rescatar a un gato en un árbol. Él
tiene miedo a las alturas, las escaleras y los
gatos. Pero su vecina, Anita, es hermosa y
rescatar a su gato sería la manera perfecta
de ser un héroe y conseguir su atención.
Él está casi allí. La escalera comienza a
temblar y él mira hacia abajo y se da cuenta
de lo alto que está. Mira a su hermosa vecina
y decide que no vale la pena. Él grita fuerte
"¡AYUDA! ¡Me estoy cayendo!" El gato salta
de repente del árbol sobre su cabeza. Ambos
caen al suelo y el gato corre hacia su
propietaria. Anita corre hacia Jacob, quien
está tirado en el suelo.
"Muchas gracias", dice ella. "¡Eso fue muy
heróico! Espero que no esté lastimado".
"No fue nada", susurra él. "Por cierto, si no
es mucha molestia, ¿sería tan amable de
llamarme una ambulancia?"
