Verbos modales en inglés may y might. These modal verbs are used to
express probability. Although they are highly used in English, Spanish
students don’t normally make use of them and I wonder why.

Let’s see if you use them after this easy and clear explanation!

As any modal verb, they are followed by an infinitive without ‘to’, for
example: may come, might go.

They are used when we want to express an idea or activity which is not sure (it’s just probable) as we say in
Spanish puede que sí, puede que no.

Example: I may go to the beach on Sunday. Let’s see if I have free time at last! = Puede que vaya a la playa el
domingo or igual voy a playa el domingo. ¡A ver si por fin tengo tiempo!

This is another translation: igual hago algo… (but I’m not sure…).

I may start learning English, but I don’t know, I prefer German = Igual empiezo a estudiar inglés, pero no sé,
prefiero alemán.

Difference between ‘may’ and ‘might’

It is often explained that might expresses a smaller possibility/probability than ‘may’, but in fact there is little
difference between them.

Negative

May + not + infinitive (without to)

I may not go to Peter’s party. I’m so tired… = igual no voy a la fiesta de Pedro, estoy tan cansado/a…

I might not go on holiday this year, I wouldn’t like to spend my money = igual no me voy de vacaciones este
año…

Interrogative

May + subject + infinitive?

May I go to the toilet? = ¿Puedo ir al aseo? (at school with children)

We use ‘may’ in questions to ask for permission in formal situations, as a synonym of ‘can I…?’

Un ejercicio para que practiquéis, traducir español inglés:

1. ¿Vas a venir a mi casa? Puede que sí.

2. ¿Puedo abrir la ventana, por favor?
3. Igual me compro un coche nuevo porque el que tengo es muy viejo.
4. Puede que luego te llame, si tengo tiempo.
5. Igual no salimos a cenar con vosotros hoy, estamos muy ocupados.

4. Puede que luego te llame, si tengo tiempo = I may phone you later, if I have time…
5. Igual no salimos a cenar con vosotros hoy, estamos muy ocupados = we may not eat out with you today,
we’re too busy.

Recordar que es muy sútil la diferencia entre may and might, por tanto, podéis usar uno u otro indistintamente.
