2 Unable to Start or Complete a Regeneration

This diagnostic is typically unable to start or complete a regeneration.

NOTE: Truck must be at operating temperature before continuing with this testing.

1. Connect Detroit Diesel Diagnostic Link (DDDL) or Detroit Diesel Reprogramming Station (DDRS) and check for codes.
Are codes present?
a. Yes; repair all codes first.
b. No, Go to step 2.
2. Using DDDL/DDRS, monitor vehicle speed. Is vehicle speed 0 mph?
a. Yes; Go to step 3.
b. No; refer to OEM service information for diagnostic information. Repair as necessary.
3. Using DDDL/DDRS, monitor coolant temperature. Is coolant temperature at least 60 ºC (140 ºF)?
a. Yes; Go to step 4.
b. No; verify thermostat is operating properly and coolant temperature sensor(s) is in operation. Repair as necessary.
4. Using DDDL/DDRS, monitor engine oil temperature. Is engine oil temperature at least 40 ºC (104 ºF)?
a. Yes; Go to step 5.
b. No; verify thermostat is operating properly and oil temperature sensor(s) is in operation. Repair as necessary.
5. Using DDDL/DDRS, verify the DPF zone. If it is in Zone 0, the system will not initiate regeneration without using DDDL/
DDRS.
a. If in zone 0, Go to step 6.
b. If not in zone 0 attempt to activate a regeneration using DDDL/DDRS. If regeneration starts, no repair is needed at
this time. If regeneration fails to start, Go to step 6.
6. Using DDDL/DDRS, monitor engine speed. Is engine speed at idle?
a. Yes; Go to step 7.
b. No; disengage PTO.
7. Using DDDL/DDRS, monitor the clutch switch. Depress and release clutch, Does the clutch switch change state from ON
to OFF to ON?
a. Yes; Go to step 8.
b. No; check switch operation and configuration. Repair as necessary.
8. Using DDDL/DDRS, monitor the parking brake switch. Disengage and engage parking brakes, Does the parking brake
switch change state from ON to OFF to ON?
a. Yes; Go to step 9.
b. No; check switch operation and configuration. Repair as necessary.
9. Using DDDL/DDRS, monitor the neutral safety switch (if equipped). Shift automatic transmission into gear, and back to
neutral, Does the neutral safety switch change state (N to R, N to D)?
a. Yes; Go to step 10.
b. No; check neutral switch operation and configuration. Repair as necessary.
10. Using DDDL/DDRS, monitor the regeneration switch. Press and hold switch for a minimum of five seconds. Does it
change state from OFF to ON?
a. Yes; Go to step 11.
b. No; check switch operation and configuration. Repair as necessary.
11. Using DDDL/DDRS, monitor DOC inlet temperature. Is DOC inlet temperature 265 – 300 ºC (509 – 572 ºF)?
a. Yes; Go to step 12.
b. No; verify operation of the DOC inlet temperature sensor operation and the doser system. Repair as necessary.
12. Using DDDL/DDRS, monitor DOC outlet temperature. Is DOC outlet temperature 260 ºC (500 ºF)?
a. Yes; Go to step 13.
b. No; verify temperature sensor operation. Repair as necessary.
13. Using DDDL/DDRS, monitor the difference between DOC outlet and DOC outlet model. Is the difference within +/- 100
ºC (212 ºF)?

a. If difference is above 100 ºC (212 ºF), check for combustible substance entering the ATD. Repair as necessary.
b. If temperature is low, check doser system for correct operation. Repair as necessary.
c. If within +/- 100 ºC (212 ºF), Go to step 14.
14. Does the engine run rough or show high torque on DDDL/DDRS?
a. Yes; perform an idle speed balance test and repair as needed.
b. No; Go to step 15.
15. Check complete exhaust system for leaks, Are there exhaust leaks before the ATD?
a. Yes; repair as needed.
b. No; Go to step 16.
16. Check fuel pressure. Is it within specifications? Refer to section "Low Pressure Fuel System - Pressure Test"
a. Yes; Go to step 17.
b. No; locate and repair the cause of low fuel pressure.
17. Check air induction system for leaks, Does the air induction system have a leak?
a. Yes; repair air leak as needed.
b. No; Call Detroit Diesel Customer Support Center.

3 Unable to Start or Complete a Regeneration

3 Unable to Start or Complete a Regeneration

This diagnostic is typically unable to start or complete a regeneration.

NOTE: Truck must be at operating temperature before continuing with this testing.

1. Connect Detroit Diesel Diagnostic Link (DDDL) or Detroit Diesel Reprogramming Station (DDRS) and check for codes.
Are codes present?
a. Yes; repair all codes first.
b. No; Go to step 2.
2. Using DDDL/DDRS, monitor vehicle speed. Is vehicle speed 0 mph?
a. Yes; Go to step 3.
b. No; refer to OEM service information for diagnostic information. Repair as necessary.
3. Using DDDL/DDRS, monitor coolant temperature. Is coolant temperature at least 60 ºC (140 ºF)?

4 High Idle Regeneration Initiates -- Runs Indefinitely

This diagnostic is typically high idle regeneration initiates but runs indefinitely.

NOTE: Truck must be at operating temperature before continuing with this testing.

1. Connect Detroit Diagnostic Link (DDDL) or Detroit Diesel Reprogramming Station (DDRS) and check for codes. Are
codes present?
a. Yes; repair all codes first.
b. No, Go to step 2.
2. Using DDDL/DDRS (Key ON, Engine OFF), monitor the intake pressure sensor and compare to baro pressure sensor.
Are the pressures within 0.5 psi of each other?
a. Yes; Go to step 3.
b. No; replace the defective sensors.
3. Using DDDL/DDRS, monitor the coolant temperature sensor. Is coolant temperature at least 60 ºC (140 ºF)?
a. Yes; Go to step 4.
b. No; verify thermostat is operating properly and coolant temperature sensor(s) is in operation.
4. Check fuel pressure, is it within specifications?
a. Yes; Go to step 5.
b. No; locate and repair the cause of low fuel pressure.
5. Verify operation of doser block. Is it operating properly?
a. Yes; Go to step 6.
b. No; repair as necessary.
6. Verify operation of doser injector. Is it operating properly?
a. Yes; Go to step 7.
b. No; repair as necessary.
7. Check the doser system for fuel leaks. Is the system leaking?
a. Yes; repair leaks.
b. No; Go to step 8.
8. Using DDDL/DDRS, monitor DOC outlet temperature. Is DOC outlet temperature at least 260 ºC (500 ºF)?
a. Yes; Go to step 9.
b. No; verify DOC outlet temperature sensor operation. Repair as necessary.
9. Using DDDL/DDRS, verify Intake Throttle Valve (ITV) operation. Is the ITV operating properly?
a. Yes; Go to step 10.
b. No; repair as necessary.
10. Verify DOC operation. Is the DOC operating properly?
a. Yes; Call Detroit Customer Support Center.
b. No; replace DOC.

5 High Idle Regeneration Initiates and Aborts

This diagnostic is typically high idle regeneration initiates and aborts.

NOTE: Truck must be at operating temperature before continuing with this testing.

1. Connect Detroit Diagnostic Link (DDDL) or Detroit Diesel Reprogramming Station (DDRS) and check for codes. Are
codes present?
a. Yes; repair all codes first.
b. No; Go to step 2.
2. Using DDDL/DDRS, monitor Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) inlet temperature. Is DOC inlet temperature 265 – 300
ºC (509 – 572 ºF)?
a. Yes; Go to step 3.
b. No; verify operation of the DOC inlet temperature sensor operation and the doser system. Repair as necessary.
3. Using DDDL/DDRS, verify Intake Throttle Valve (ITV) operation. Is the ITV operating properly?
a. Yes; Go to step 4.
b. No; repair as necessary.
4. Using DDDL/DDRS, monitor operation of doser injector. Is it operating properly?
a. Yes; Go to step 5.
b. No; repair as necessary.
5. Check air induction system for leaks. Is there a leak?
a. Yes; repair air leak, as needed.
b. No; Go to step 6.
6. Check for a restriction in the exhaust system. On MBE 900, check the exhaust flap. Is the exhaust system restricted?
a. Yes; repair as needed.
b. No; Go to step 7.
7. Check the doser system for fuel leaks. Is the system leaking?
a. Yes; repair leaks.
b. No; Go to step 8.
8. Check the operation of Jake brakes. Are they operating properly?
a. Yes; Go to step 9.
b. No; repair as necessary.
9. Using DDDL/DDRS, monitor the difference between DOC outlet and DOC outlet model. Is the difference within +/- 100
ºC (212 ºF)?
a. If temperature is high, check for combustible substance entering the Aftertreatment Device (ATD). Repair as
necessary.
b. If temperature is low, check doser system for correct operation. Repair as necessary.
c. If within +/-100 ºC (212 ºF) Call Detroit Customer Support Center.
