Por tal motivo, es necesario proponer una solución práctica para poder
construir vías más resistentes y eficientes, prolongando así, la vida útil de las

CARCTERÍSTICAS
1.1. Sub-rasante

la posibilidad que no se requiera de una capa de sub base.

Los materiales a utilizar para la estabilización de la sub-rasante pueden ser,
cal hidratada, cal viva, granza de cal, lechada de cal o compuestos

El agua a usar en las operaciones debe de ser clara, libre de aceites, sales,
ácidos, álcalis, azúcar, materia vegetal y demás sustancias que afecten el
desempeño de la sub-rasante.
1.2. Sub-base

Controla y elimina en lo posible, los cambios de volumen, elasticidad y
plasticidad perjudiciales que pudiera tener el materia de la sub-rasante, además
de funcionar como una capa de drenaje para la estructura del pavimento.

El tamaño máximo de las piedras que contenga el material de sub-base, no
debe exceder setenta milímetros, ni exceder de la mitad del espesor de la capa.
El material de sub-base, no debe tener más del cincuenta por ciento en peso,
de partículas que pasen el tamiz 0.425 mm, ni más del veinticinco por ciento en

peso, de partículas que pasen el tamiz 0.075 mm.
La porción que pasa por el tamiz 0.425 mm, no debe tener un índice de
plasticidad AASHTO T-90, mayor de seis ni un limite líquido, AASHTO t-89,
mayor de veinticinco, determinados ambos, sobre una muestra preparada en
húmedo, AASHTO, T-146. 4

milímetros, no permitiéndose la colocación de la capa siguiente, antes de
comprobar la compactación de la inmediata anterior. El material suelto de sub-
base colocado, debe corresponder en cantidad, al espesor de la capa a tender
en el ancho total establecido en la sección típica de pavimentación, tomando en
cuenta la reducción de volumen debido a la compactación. La distancia máxima
que puede ser colocado el material de sub-base, medida desde el extremo
anterior cubierto con la base, no debe ser mayor de dos kilómetros.

Se debe efectuar un ensayo de valor soporte del suelo por cada quinientos
metros cúbicos producidos, al iniciar la explotación de cada banco, hasta y
llegar a tres mil metros cúbicos, y posteriormente un ensayo por cada tres mil
metros cúbicos colocados.

El valor máximo de deflexión aceptable para la superficie de la capa de sub-
base, no debe ser mayor de dos milímetros, respecto a un punto dado, a una
distancia no mayor de tres metros, en cualquier dirección, medido con la viga
Benkelman.
1.3. Base

o La fracción del material que pase por el tamiz cuarenta, debe de tener
un límite líquido menor del veinticinco por ciento y un índice plástico
inferior a seis.
o Un CBR superior a 70 %, cuando se cumple el 95 % de la densidad
máxima sea obtenida del ensayo AASHTO T- 180 (proctor
modificado).
No más del veinticinco por ciento en peso del material retenido en el tamiz
número cuatro, deben de ser partículas planas o alargadas, con una longitud
mayor de cinco veces es espesor promedio de las mismas.

Al igual que en las otras capas, el material de base granular, tiene que estar
exento de impurezas, tales como, materia vegetal, basura, terrones de arcilla o
sustancias que incorporadas puedan causar fallas en la estructura del
pavimento.

Si los ensayos de valor soporte, abrasión, partículas planas, graduación,
plasticidad y equivalente de arena, no llenan los valores especificados, después
de verificar en tramos no mayores de quinientos metros, en más del veinticinco
por ciento de los ensayos, se debe de hacer las correcciones necesarias. Se
establece una tolerancia del tres por ciento respecto al porcentaje de
compactación para la aceptación de la capa de base granular. Efectuando
ensayos representativos cada cuatrocientos metros cuadrados de cada una de
las capas que se compacten.

La mezcla debe ser transportada de la planta al lugar de su colocación
preservándola del polvo y la lluvia, evitando la perdida de temperatura durante
el trayecto. Antes de proceder con la colocación de la mezcla, la superficie
debe de estar preparada por medio de un riego de liga. La mezcla transportada
debe de colocarse y tenderse con máquina pavimentadora, que permita ajustar
espesores y anchos, asegurando su uniformidad en una sola operación, en un
ancho no menor de tres metros, y espesores no mayores de quince centímetros
por capa, a una temperatura no menor de ciento cuarenta grados centígrados.
Se debe de lograr una compactación del noventa y ocho por ciento, según el
método de diseño, procurando completarla antes que la temperatura de la capa
alcance los ochenta y cinco grados centígrados y nunca en capas mayores de
quince centímetros. 7

Los pavimentos se diseñan en función del efecto del daño que produce el
paso de los vehículos y un número determinado de cargas aplicadas durante su
vida útil. Un tránsito mixto está compuesto de vehículos de diferente peso y
número de ejes, por lo tanto, para efectos de cálculo los ejes se transforman en
un número de ejes equivalentes.

en la medida de lo posible, los futuros desarrollos de complejos habitacionales,
e industriales, por ejemplo, que contribuirán más adelante con el incremento en
el flujo vehicular de la carretera proyectada.
En general se puede decir que el total del flujo vehicular para un tramo dado,
es exactamente la mitad para cada dirección del tránsito, sin embargo es de
mayor importancia la diferencia de peso existente entre los vehículos que van
en una y otra dirección, como puede ser el caso de una fábrica cercana o un
puerto, por ejemplo.

pavimento flexible, dado que cada uno responde de manera diferente a una

Los vehículos livianos tienen una incidencia muy pequeña en el cálculo
de ejes equivalentes de carga y pueden ser despreciados, sin embargo, los
vehículos pesados tienen una incidencia muy grande, y cualquier variación en la
cantidad de los mismos puede arrojar diferencias significativas en el valor final.
Últimamente el número de camiones se está elevando considerablemente
con respecto al de los automóviles y sus respectivas cargas por consiguiente.
Todo esto trae como consecuencia un fuerte incremento en el número de ejes
equivalentes de carga, por lo que se hace necesario encontrar una solución
para reforzar las estructuras del pavimento que se planean construir en el
futuro.

Cuando se utiliza cemento como material estabilizador, es conveniente
saber la cantidad máxima a utilizar, en función de los cambios físicos que
experimentan los suelos, ya que una cantidad alta de cemento, hace que los
materiales obtengan altos valores de resistencia mecánica, así como
contracciones fuertes que se traducen en agrietamientos, que más adelante se
reflejan en la carpeta de rodadura.

a) Método del tiempo para drenar
El posible daño que pueda sufrir la estructura del pavimento, depende del
tiempo que le tome al agua en escurrir, así como de las condiciones climáticas
de la zona. Es conveniente que la estructura se drene en un lapso de media a
una hora como máximo, con el objeto de minimizar los posibles daños, por el
efecto de la presencia de humedad en las capas. Para realizar en análisis
correspondiente es necesario contar con los siguientes datos:
o Pendiente longitudinal
o Pendiente transversal
o Espesor de la capa a drenar
o Ancho de la base permeable

o Caudal de entrada por efecto de la gravedad

3. UTILIZACIÓN DE LA GEOMALLA COMO REFUERZO DE LA
ESTRUCTURA DEL PAVIMENTO FLEXIBLE

Las geomallas pueden ser flexibles de hilos de poliéster, nylon o bien fibra
de vidrio de alta densidad, fabricados con polietileno de alta densidad y
polipropileno, formadas por una red regular de elementos tensiles de tracción
conectados en forma integral, con aberturas, uniones y costillas lo
suficientemente grandes como para permitir una traba mecánica importante
entre el suelo, el material y agregados circundantes, funcionando
principalmente como refuerzo, agregando resistencia a las deformaciones y
aumentando la capacidad soporte a las capas que conforman la estructura del
pavimento flexible.
El movimiento de tierras es cada vez más costoso, las cargas son cada vez
más pesadas, y nos encontramos con grandes espesores de relleno. Para
solucionar este y otros problemas, es necesario encontrar una solución práctica
y económicamente atractiva para poder desarrollar los diferentes proyectos de
ingeniería. Esta solución la constituye la utilización e implementación de la
geomalla, brindando tecnología de aplicación innovadora con productos
alternativos que mejoran la construcción y el movimiento de tierras, entre otros,
sirviendo a una gran variedad de mercados industriales y comerciales, centrado
principalmente en los siguientes campos de aplicación:

Ya sea que el sistema se utilice para mejorar la sub rasante, para reforzar la
capa de base, o ambas, se obtiene como resultado un mejor rendimiento y
economía de los pavimentos flexibles.

Las geomallas han sido utilizadas con éxito como refuerzo de estructuras
granulares en pavimentos flexibles desde el año de 1980 en Estados Unidos.
Este tipo de refuerzo se ha definido como refuerzo de base, como efecto de
restricción lateral o de refuerzo de confinamiento, debido a la unión que se
genera en la interacción del suelo granular con la geomalla. El agregado no
reforzado se desplaza lateralmente bajo las cargas del tráfico, causando el
ahuellamiento, y finalmente el fallo de la estructura del pavimento flexible.
Las capas reforzadas con geomalla resisten este movimiento lateral y
brindan un mejor desempeño a largo plazo.

3.5. Tipos de geomallas y sus características
Para todos los tipos de geomalla el porcentaje del área abierta debe estar
entre el cincuenta y ochenta por ciento, según recomendación del Cuerpo de
Ingenieros de los Estado Unidos.
Todas las geomallas deberán tener una resistencia mínima en las costillas, o
juntas, de cuarenta libras, si esto no se cumple entonces deberá tener una
masa mínima de 8 onzas por yarda cuadrada, y una rigidez flexional de 30.000
mg-cm.

Dentro de las geomallas bi-axiales, pueden diferenciarse otros dos grupos,
las geomallas rígidas y las geomallas flexibles. Las primeras son aquellas
fabricadas de polipropileno, y las segundas fabricadas generalmente con fibras
de poliéster unidas en los puntos de encuentro mediante diferentes métodos de
tejido con un revestimiento generalmente de PVC.

En recapeos para minimizar el espesor de la nueva carpeta de rodadura,
retrasar la aparición de las grietas e incrementar la resistencia de la estructura
del pavimento flexible se ha utilizado la geomalla de fibra de vidrio, aumentando
la resistencia de la nueva carpeta asfáltica, ya que absorbe los esfuerzos a
tracción horizontal que se generan sobre la misma. Es importante tomar en
cuenta que exista continuidad dentro del conjunto, por lo que es fundamental
que la geomalla se adhiera perfectamente al asfalto. Para incrementar esta
adherencia se puede impregnar y recubrir esta de material bituminoso

Todas las geomallas deben tener una resistencia mínima en las uniones o
costillas de cuarenta libras, con el fin de transmitir eficazmente las cargas de
costilla a costillas, a lo largo y ancho de toda la geomalla.

Para mantener los traslapes y la alineación en toda el área de cobertura se
debe de sujetar, antes de desenrollar totalmente la geomalla, al comienzo del
rollo, en el centro y las esquinas. Esto se puede lograr con pequeñas pilas de
material, con arandelas, clavijas o bien utilizando grapas grandes de gran
calibre, colocándolas a través de las aperturas de la geomalla, nunca rasgando
el producto.

Para que ésta quede bien tensa, se debe desenrollar la geomalla, alinearla y
estirarla en forma manual para eliminar las arrugas. Puede ser necesario,
dependiendo del proyecto, la utilización de clavijas o grapas adicionales para
mantener la geomalla en posición, antes de colocar el material de relleno.

La muestra a utilizar, de un metro de largo, debe indicar la dirección del
rollo, que es como se ha dicho en otras oportunidades, la dirección de mayor
resistencia de la geomalla.
La muestra debe ser ensayada en sus dos extremos, y en sus dos caras,

El segundo tipo de abrazadera rectangular que se utiliza se debe colocar en
la parte inferior de la costilla. Debe ser lo suficientemente ancha para sujetar la
muestra completa evitando que esta se suelte y deteriore al momento de
realizar el ensayo.
La muestra para hacer el ensayo debe cortarse forma de “T” siendo la parte
inferior la más larga de un total de tres a cuatro nudos aproximadamente, con el
fin de permitir suficiente área de sujeción en la abrazadera. Debe indicarse
como en todos los ensayos descritos anteriormente la dirección del rollo, que es
como ya se ha dicho, el sentido con mayor resistencia.

mejorar la capacidad soporte de la estructura del pavimento en general. Se

The biaxial geogrid shall be delivered to the jobsite in roll form with each roll individually
identified and nominally measuring 3.0 meters (9.8 feet) or 4.0 meters (13.1 feet) in width and
75.0 meters (246 feet) in length. A typical truckload quantity is 185 to 250 rolls.

Dimensions and Delivery
The biaxial geogrid shall be delivered to the jobsite in roll form with each roll individually
identified and nominally measuring 4.0 meters 13.1 feet) in width and 50.0 meters (164 feet) in
length. A typical truckload quantity is 150 rolls.

1. Unless indicated otherwise, values shown are minimum average roll values determined in
accordance with ASTM D4759. The column labeled MD Values represents results from testing
the product in the Machine Direction. The column labeled XMD Values represents results from
testing the product in the Cross-Machine (Transverse) Direction.
2. True resistance to elongation when initially subjected to a load determined in accordance with
GRI-GG2-87 without deforming test materials under load before measuring such resistance or
employing "secant" or "offset" tangent methods of measurement so as to overstate tensile
properties.
