Los plaguicidas han sido el método utilizado por algunas décadas, pero sus efectos sobre
organismos no objetivo, contaminaciones de agua, residuos en cosechas y alimentos, el desarrollo
de resistencia de los insectos a los químicos y el incremento a la degradación microbial (Georgis,
1992; Gaugler, 1988), han originado un clima político y social en contra de ellos (Georgis y
Hague, 1991). Por otro lado, asociaciones ambientalistas han forzado la atención en la industria,
para el desarrollo e incremento de investigaciones sobre otros métodos de control alternativo, y
menos tóxicos para el manejo de plagas (Georgis y Poinar, 1994). El papel del control
microbiano en la protección de cultivos y bosques, y la disminución de insectos de importancia
médica y veterinaria, se ha expandido con el descubrimiento y desarrollo de nuevos agentes de
control microbiano. Por su selectividad y mínimo impacto ambiental, los organismos
entomopatógenos pueden ser componentes ideales en programas de manejo integrado de plagas
en el principio y más allá del siglo XXI (Lacey y Goettel, 1995).
Como resultado de los progresos que durante los últimos 20 años se han hecho sobre la
taxonomía, biología, genética, ecología, rango de hospederos, aplicaciones tecnológicas, pruebas
de laboratorio, pruebas de campo y comercialización de los nematodos entomopatógenos y su
bacteria simbiótica (Bedding, 1998), los nematodos del género Steinernema y Heterorhabditis
han surgido como excelentes candidatos de biocontrol alternativo de insectos plaga, ya que
posiblemente ellos ocupan una gran mitad entre los predatores/parasitoides y patógenos (Gaugler,
1988; Grewal y Georgis, 1999), y han recibido considerable atención como bioinsecticidas, por la
impresionante y combinación única de los atributos que poseen (Gaugler y Kaya, 1990) como la
presencia de un amplio rango de hospederos, la habilidad para buscar e introducir sus bacterias
simbióticas dentro del cuerpo del insecto, matándolo por septicemia dentro de las 24-48 horas

Por otro lado, en el estado de Zacatecas el control de insectos plaga que afectan cultivos
de importancia económica, se realiza mediante la aplicación de insecticidas convencionales, lo
que ha originado contaminación ambiental y desarrollo de resistencia a los insecticidas. Por
consiguiente, es necesario el establecimiento de otros métodos de control alternativo, y
aprovechar los ecosistemas que ofrecen un gran potencial no explorado en el estado, para aislar
nematodos entomopatógenos nativos adaptados localmente. El presente estudio fue conducido
para determinar la existencia natural de nematodos entomopatógenos (Steinernematidae y
Heterorhabditidae) en agrosistemas de la región del Cañon de Juchipila, Zacatecas, México.
MATERIALES Y METODOS
suelo se tamizaron, y una cantidad de 300 g se colocó en un recipiente de plástico de 500 ml,
humedeciendo la muestra obtenida. Enseguida a cada contenedor se agregaron cinco larvas del
último estadio de G. mellonella, los cuales se taparon, invirtieron y etiquetaron permaneciendo a
temperatura ambiente (25±3o C) durante siete días (Stock et al., 1999).
Después del período de incubación las larvas se recuperaron para su examinación. Los
cadáveres se recolectaron, los cuales se lavaron con agua destilada estéril, y se desinfectaron
superficialmente por inmersión en hipoclorito de sodio al 0.1% durante 30 segundos, después se
pasaron tres veces en recipientes con agua destilada estéril (Woodring y Kaya, 1988). Enseguida,
se colocaron dentro de una caja de petri (60 x 15 mm) sobre un papel filtro Wartman No. 2.
Después de 2 a 3 días en la caja de Petri los cadáveres que mostraron signos y síntomas
característicos de infecciones por nematodos entomopatógenos (Poinar, 1979), se examinaron
bajo un microscopio estereoscópico American Optical, para comprobar la presencia de
steinernematidos y heterorhabditidos (Poinar, 1979; Hominick y Briscoe, 1990). Posteriormente,
para recolectar los juveniles infectivos que emerjieron de los cadáveres, se transfirieron e
incubaron en trampas de White (1929) modificada, que consistió en una caja de petri (60 mm de
diámetro) invertida, colocada dentro de otra caja de Petri (100 x 15 mm), donde los cadáveres de
G. mellonella, se colocaron sobre un papel filtro Wartman del No. 2 situado sobre la caja de Petri
cubierta (60 mm), agregando 5 ml de agua destilada estéril a cada caja (100 x 15 mm). Los
cadáveres permanecieron en la trampa por una semana, para que los juveniles infectivos
emerjieran y migraran dentro del agua.

que los heterorhabditidos están más adaptados al medio ambiente cálido (Hara et al., 1991).
Además, como lo señalan Hominick y Briscoe (1990) la prevalencia de los heterorhabditidos
aislados sobre los steinernematidos en el clima cálido, los resultados de esta inspección apoyan su
hipótesis. Solamente se detectaron los dos géneros en ambos climas, en el cultivo de alfalfa y en
guayabo respectivamente, así como maíz en la zona de transición correspondiente al municipio
de Villanueva. Asimismo, no se recuperaron nematodos entomopatógenos de las muestras
colectadas en los cultivos de baja humedad del suelo o seco, hallazgo en concordania con Stock
et al. (1999). Debido a que estos nematodos entomopatógenos son altamente intolerantes a las
condiciones ambientales extremas, especialmente a la humedad y temperatura (Gaugler, 1981).
Esto sugiere que la temperatura es un factor importante para la supervivencia de los nematodos.
Por otro lado, Akhurst y Brooks (1984) indican que las diferencias en la distribución de
los nematodos entomopatógenos en varios países, pueden reflejar la disponibilidad de insectos
hospederos satisfactorios, aunque la influencia ambiental como el tipo del suelo, también puede
determinar su distribución. De igual forma, Mrácek y Webster (1993) señalan que la mayoría de
los nematodos, existen en los sitios donde el impacto humano sobre la naturaleza ha sido
substancial, en éste caso las tierras cultivadas, en las cuales una parte del ciclo de vida de los
insectos plaga transcurre en el suelo, y en donde también daños visibles en el follaje son comunes
en los cultivos y frutales establecidos en la región de estudio. La existencia de Steinernema y
Heterorhabditis en los cultivos muestreados, puede ser atribuida al hecho de que plagas tales
como moscas de la fruta (Anastrepha striata), picudo de la guayaba (Conotrachelus dimidiatus) y
el temolillo (Cyclocephala lunulata) consideradas las plagas de mayor importancia, y larvas de
otros coleópteros y lepidópteros de hábitat cripticos, son susceptibles a los nematodos
entomopatógenos, mismas que probablemente pueden ser las responsables de mantener las
poblaciones de los nematodos en estos hábitats.

coincide por la descrita por Nguyen (1995).
Esta inspección provee información básica y los resultados servirán para futuros estudios,
con respecto a la identificación de especie de Steinernema y Heterorhabditis aislados mediante
caracterización morfométrica, y correlacionar la incidencia y distribución de nematodos aislados,
con los factores físico ambientales de los agrosistemas inspeccionados.
