5.2 Corrosión
La corrosión de los equipos puede proporcionar impurezas en la superficie del
aislamiento. La corrosión también debilita el contacto entre las terminales de los
conductores incrementando la resistencia de contacto a través de la oxidación u alguna
otra contaminación corrosiva.
La condensación del vapor y el goteo del agua pueden crear un camino en la superficie
de los materiales aislantes. Esto puede crear un flashover a tierra y la intensificación del
potencial del arco de fase a fase.

Arcos eléctricos suelen llamarse las descargas en el aire, como las que se
producen al interrumpir corrientes eléctricas con interruptores mecánicos, las
que se producen por accidente en las instalaciones eléctricas entre conductores a
diferentes potenciales, o las descargas mantenidas de las lámparas de arco, que
iluminan por medio del arco entre dos electrodos en el aire.
