provide protecaion forthe internalcooling system components and protectio
against plttrng and cavtaton roson ofthe cyllnder linels and block. A
proper SCA mxtlre mantains a pH level between 8.5-10,5 to prevent
corrosion/ a ntilte level between 1200-4000 ppm to protect a9inst pittng

SCAS to ensure that nitrite concenlraton is quickly brought to proper tevet.

PIT|ING AND CAVTTATION ER(EION

Cavitaiion erosio wlllcause pitiig ofcyllnder sleeves, cylinder btock cooting
jacket bore walls and the cylinder sleeve seat surface ofthe cytlnder btock. In wet
sleeve engines such as ihe E-TechrM, coolant sunounds the cyttnder tiner. Whe
the engine is running, the cylnder sleeve flexes and vbrates as the alr/fuet
mixlure inside the combustio chamber ignites. Thls vibration causes atr bubbtes
to rorm in the coolant surroundng the cylinder sleeve. The concetraton otair
bubbles increases fcoolng system pressre is lovv (which coutd be.caused by a
defective cooling system pressure cap). or whn cootant tevel is tow due to
leakage. The concentratron ofair bubbles tso increases with icreases in enghe
vlbrations, such as when the engne is running cotd (dlre to the increased ptston-
to-c"ylider wall clearance) or whe the engine ls "lugged." These air bubbles
lmplode (explode inward) and rclease eerqy aqatnst the outsde watts oithe
cylinder sleeves and cylinder b,ock.

The outside walls ofthe cylndersleeve and block must be coated with an oxide
film lo protct agaist cavitation erosion and pitting. As ihe atr bubbtes in the
coolaft mplode and collapse agains! these 5uaces, sulTcent energy ts reteased
to begin removing the oxide coating, Unprotected, the oxide ftm may be rernoved
irorn the liner walls ln as little as 30,000 mttes. Wtrhoul ths oxide ftm, erosio
and pttng takes place at a very high rate, nd eventuatty resutis in hotes tn the
sleeve and block that alows coolant lekage nto ihe cytnders ad etsewhere.
Coolant leakng into the cyllnders will result in severe eqie damaqe, ictudinq
enqine berinq failure.

Engine Oil emperature Limts

With the inlroducticn of the eletronic dashboard on CX and CH model chassis,
many olthese vehlcles are now equipped with an egine oil temperature gauge.
There is a concer rong operatorc that even though the egne coolani
lemperature is within lhe normal operating range, the engine ol temperature
ndicated on the 9au9e is too hgh. Typically, the gauge indcates an englne oil
temperature ol250oF, which is .ight at the beginning orthe red zone on the
gau9e.

At a minmum, engine oil temperature shoud be maitaned above the bolllng

point ofwaier (212.F l100ocl). At temperatures below that, mosture wlll
condense nd contaminate the oil wth a light brow foamy ernulslon ofoil and
water. Thls foamy emulsion will be found in the cylrnder head cover areas oia
cold-running engine. Engine oil temperature ls primarly dependent upon ambient
air lemperat!re and engne coolant temperature. Durng full-load opertion at
normal spring s!mmer and lall ambient temperatu.es, there is dlfference of
approxlmately 45o between engine coolant temperature and engine oil
temperat!re. wth an egine coolant temperature of 205oF/ engne oil
temperature wll be apprDxmately z50oF,

During normal engine operation. oxdation ofthe oil can form sludge, aclds and
deposits around the rg ad under-crown area ofthe pistons. This wlleventually
deplete the oil's addtve package, and this is the reason why oil must be changed
at regular intervals BEFORE the additlves have been depleted. EO-l'l PLUS ols
have very good oxidaton inhibitors whlch contlnue to function over th ormal
drin interuals, even when shod-term oll temperatures are above 250"F but less
than 270"F (short-term ls deflned s lss than 20% ofthe total operaling tlme on
the oi).

At fulFlod operatlon, enqine oi tenperature can be approximately 250oF on a

sustalned basis, ad can intermiltently reach temperaiures between 250oF Lo 270'

in laboratory and field tests, The appllcable peformance specifications are:

.
. Ihe MACK T 10 Test, whch measures resislance of the oi to oxidaton at
higher ollempertures. nd the ablllty ofthe oi to cotrolabrasive wear.
The T-10 test also measures cylnder wear and bearing corcsion prolecton.

The MACK r-10 is a 300-hour test that rtilizes a lvlACK ASET'" engine. and s
the most severe test ofthis type in the ndustry.

. The l"lACK T-8E Test, which is a 300-hour tesi that measures lhe ability of the
oll to ress! sooi-.elated thickennq.

Addtonlly, EO-N Premium Plus dieselengine ol exceeds other industry standard

tests which determine soot-related wer and reEislance to oxidation at higher
temperaiures.
