 DECLARACIN DE INTENCIONES
La Ley de Prevencin de Riesgos Laborales nos habla, ya en su exposi-
cin de motivos, de que la proteccin del trabajador frente a los riesgos
laborales exige una actuacin de la empresa que no slo se reduce al
cumplimiento formal de un conjunto de deberes y obligaciones sino,
adems, a la implantacin de una autntica cultura de la prevencin
basada, entre otros principios, en la informacin y la formacin de los
trabajadores dirigidas a un mejor conocimiento de los riesgos derivados
del trabajo y la forma de prevenirlos y evitarlos.
Si a lo anterior aadimos que la seguridad en el puesto de trabajo es un
derecho constitucional del que todo trabajador debe hacer uso, es ne-
cesario que Vd. tenga unos conocimientos bsicos en disciplinas como

The Law on the Prevention of Occupational Hazards tells us, in its statement
of motives, that the protection of workers against occupational hazards
requires an activity from the company that is not just re- duced
to formal compliance with a set of rights and obligations, but also to
the introduction of a genuine culture of prevention based, among other
principles, on offering information and training workers aimed at a
greater awareness of the hazards derived from the job and the way of
preventing them and avoiding them.
If we add to the above the fact that safety at work is a constitutional
right of which all workers should make use, you need to have a basic
knowledge in disciplines such as Safety at Work, Industrial Hygiene

la Seguridad en el Trabajo, Higiene Industrial y Ergonoma y Psicosocio-
loga Aplicada.
Con este fin MC MUTUAL ha creado este manual que tiene en sus ma-
nos. Un Manual Bsico de Prevencin de Riesgos Laborales que servir
como gua para que pueda desarrollar su trabajo en condiciones de se-
guridad y modificar ciertos comportamientos laborales inseguros, que
pueden perjudicar su salud y la de sus compaeros.
Por ello le rogamos que lo lea con atencin y pregunte a sus mandos
cualquier duda que tenga al respecto.

Ergonomics and Applied Psychosociology.
It is for this purpose that MC MUTUAL has created this manual that
you are holding. It is a Basic Manual for the Prevention of Occupational
Hazards which will serve as a guide so that you can carry out your work
in conditions of safety and change certain unsafe work behaviours that
could damage your health and that of your workmates.
Therefore, we would ask you to read it with care and ask your superiors
about any doubt you may have about it.
 DEFINICIONES
Accidente de trabajo
Segn el Real Decreto Legislativo
1/1994, de 20 de junio:
Se entiende por accidente de traba-
jo toda lesin corporal que el traba-
jador sufra con ocasin o por conse-
cuencia del trabajo que ejecuta por
cuenta ajena.
Enfermedad profesional
Desde el punto de vista preventivo,
enfermedad profesional es aquel de-
terioro lento y paulatino de la salud
del trabajador producido por una
exposicin crnica a situaciones ad-
versas, sean stas producidas por el
ambiente en que se desarrolla el tra-
bajo o por la forma en que ste est
organizado.
Salud
La Organizacin Mundial de la Salud (O.M.S.) define:
La salud es un estado de completo bienestar fsico, mental y
social, y no slo la ausencia de enfermedad o dolencia.
 
DEFINITIONS
Industrial accident
According to Royal Legislative Decree
1/1994, of 20th June:
Industrial accident means any body
injury that workers may undergo dur-
ing or as a result of the work that
they carry out for somebody else.
Occupational Disease
From a preventative point of view,
an occupational disease is that which
deteriorates the workers health slowly
and gradually due to chronic exposure
to adverse conditions, whether these
are produced by the environment in
which the work is carried out or by
the way in which it is organised.
Health
The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines:
Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-
being, and not just the absence of disease or pain.

 RELACIN
ACCIDENTE-CALIDAD
Un trabajo bien hecho es el reflejo de un trabajo seguro. Por lo tanto,
realizar un trabajo bajo los criterios de calidad, consiste en desarrollarlo
en unas adecuadas condiciones de seguridad y salud para el trabajador.
Trabajar sin seguridad implica un riesgo para el trabajador, incluso po-
tencialmente para las personas prximas a l. Los actos inseguros y los
accidentes laborales desembocan en una serie de costes adicionales inne-
cesarios y no deseados, siendo un reflejo de no calidad para la empresa.
Para trabajar con calidad se deber:
Evitar o reducir en lo posible los accidentes, teniendo como objetivo
la meta cero accidentes, mediante el cumplimiento de las normas
de prevencin.

RELATIONSHIP
A job well done is the reflection of a safe job. Therefore, carrying out a
job following criteria of quality consists of developing it under suitable
conditions of health and safety for the worker.
Working without safety involves a risk for workers, and potentially for the
people close to them as well. Unsafe acts and work accidents lead to a
series of additional, unnecessary, unwanted expenses and are a reflection
on the company of poor quality.
To work with quality one should:
Avoid or reduce accidents as much as possible, having as ones objective
a zero accident goal, by means of complying with regulations on
prevention.

ACCIDENTE-CALIDAD
Integrar la prevencin a todos los niveles de la empresa. Dichos niveles
son eslabones de una cadena y todos estn implicados a la hora de
adoptar actitudes preventivas con el propsito de conseguir la desea-
da seguridad integral.
La calidad total es un concepto del todo incompatible con los acci-
dentes; ya que stos por el slo hecho de existir, provocan unas pr-
didas importantes en forma de: gastos directos derivados del acci-
dente, tiempo perdido, disminucin de la produccin, etc. Asimismo,
se optar por la seguridad como la herramienta ms eficiente para
conseguirla.
La seguridad es el factor clave para poder prestar un servicio de cali-
dad y a su vez muestra la importancia e inters que la prevencin de
riesgos laborales tiene en el trabajo diario.
Un trabajo bien hecho es el reflejo de un trabajo
seguro.

ACCIDENT-QUALITY
RELATIONSHIP
Integrate prevention at all levels of the company. These levels are links
in a chain and they are all involved when adopting preventative atti-
tudes with the aim of achieving the desired integrated safety.
Total quality is a concept which is completely incompatible with
accidents; by simply existing, accidents cause important losses in the
form of direct costs derived from the accident, wasted time, decrease
in production, etc. At the same time, safety is the most efficient tool
for achieving it.
Safety is the key factor for being able to offer a quality service and at
the same time shows the importance and interest that the prevention
of occupational hazards has on ones daily work.
A job well done is the reflection of a safe job.

 DERECHOS Y OBLIGACIONES
Derechos
Segn se indica en la Ley de Prevencin de Riesgos Laborales:
Los trabajadores tienen derecho a una protec-
cin eficaz en materia de seguridad y salud en
el trabajo.
El trabajador deber ser informado para po-
derse desenvolver en su mbito laboral de for-
ma segura.
El trabajador deber ser formado a nivel terico
y prctico, de manera que se garantice un ade-
cuado nivel de conocimiento de los equipos de
trabajo, de los sistemas de seguridad y en gene-
ral de las nuevas tecnologas aplicadas.
El trabajador tiene derecho a ser consultado y
a participar en el marco de todas las cuestio-
nes que afecten a la seguridad y a la salud en
el trabajo.
El trabajador tiene derecho a interrumpir la acti-
vidad en caso de riesgo grave e inminente para
su salud e integridad fsica. La seguridad per-
sonal y colectiva debe anteponerse al proceso
productivo de la empresa.
El trabajador tiene derecho a recibir vigilancia
de su estado de salud. Los reconocimientos m-
dicos permiten detectar y diagnosticar la salud
laboral de los trabajadores.
Obligaciones
Los trabajadores con arreglo a su formacin y siguiendo las instrucciones

Rights
According to the Law on the Prevention of Occupational Hazards:
Workers have the right to efficient protection in health and safety mat-
ters at work.
Workers should be informed so they can de-
velop in their work environment in a safe way.
Workers should be trained theoretically and
practically in order to guarantee a suitable level of
knowledge about the work equipment, the safety
systems and, in general, the new technologies
applied.
Workers have the right to be consulted and to
participate in the framework of all the ques-
tions that affect health and safety at work.
Workers have the right to stop their activity in
the case of serious, imminent risk to their health
and physical integrity. Personal and collective
safety must come before the productive process
of the company.
Workers have the right to have their state of
health monitored. Medical checkups enable
the occupational health of the workers to be
detected and diagnosed.
Obligations
With regards to the training and following the instructions of the
company, workers should in particular:

Usar adecuadamente las mquinas, aparatos, herramien-
tas, sustancias peligrosas, equipos de transporte y, en ge-
neral, cualesquiera otros medios con los que desarrollen
su actividad.
Utilizar correctamente los medios y equipos de proteccin
facilitados por el empresario, de acuerdo con las instruc-
ciones recibidas de ste.
No poner fuera de funcionamiento y utilizar correctamen-
te los dispositivos de seguridad existentes o que se insta-
len en los medios relacionados con su actividad o en los
lugares de trabajo en los que sta tenga lugar.
Informar de inmediato a su superior jerrquico directo, y a los traba-
jadores designados para realizar actividades de proteccin y de pre-
vencin o, en su caso, al servicio de prevencin, acerca de cualquier
situacin que entrae a su juicio un riesgo para la seguridad y la salud
de los trabajadores.
Contribuir al cumplimiento de las obligaciones establecidas por la au-
toridad competente con el fin de proteger la seguridad y la salud de los
trabajadores en el trabajo.
Cooperar con el empresario para que ste
pueda garantizar unas condiciones de trabajo
que sean seguras y no entraen riesgos para
la seguridad y la salud de los trabajadores. (Por
ejemplo, asistir a los cursos de formacin en
materia preventiva que establezca la empresa).
Velar tanto por su seguridad y salud, como
por la de su/s compaeros y/o personas a las
que pueda afectar su actividad profesional.
El incumplimiento por los trabajadores de las obli-
gaciones en materia de prevencin de riesgos ten-

dr la consideracin de incumplimiento laboral.
RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS
Use the machines, apparatus, tools, hazardous sub-
stances, transport equipment and, in general, any other
means with which they carry out their activity in a suitable
way.
Use the means and protection equipment provided by the
company correctly, in accordance with the instructions
received from the company.
Not override the existing safety devices or those that are
installed concerning their activity or in workplaces in
which they do their job, but use them correctly.
Immediately inform their direct hierarchic superior and the workers
assigned for carrying out any protection and prevention activities or,
if relevant, the prevention service, about any situation which in their
opinion is a risk for the health and safety of the workers.
Contribute towards complying with the obligations established by the
relevant authority with the aim of protecting the health and safety of
workers at work.
Co-operate with the company so that it can
guarantee work conditions that are safe and
not run risks with the health and safety of
the workers. (For example, attend the training
courses in preventative matters as established
by the company).
Watch out for their health and safety as well
as that of their workmates and/or people who
could be affected by their professional activ-
ity.
Non-compliance by the workers of the obligations
in matters of risk prevention will be considered to

be non-compliance with work obligations.
 SEGURIDAD
Lugares de trabajo. Orden y limpieza
Concepto
Se entiende como lugar de trabajo las reas del centro de trabajo,
edificadas o no, en las que los trabajadores deban permanecer o a las
que puedan acceder por motivos laborales. Se consideran incluidas las
reas destinadas para el descanso, los primeros auxilios, los servicios
higinicos y los comedores.
Riesgos
Los riesgos en el puesto de trabajo pueden ser
mltiples y diversos, entre los ms comunes po-
demos destacar:
Cadas de personas al mismo nivel.
Cadas de personas a distinto nivel.
Golpes contra objetos inmviles.
Atropellos o golpes por vehculos.
Medidas preventivas
El espacio y lugar de trabajo debe mantenerse
limpio y ordenado.
Los pasillos, escaleras, vas de circulacin y salidas
debern permanecer libres de obstculos, con p-
timas condiciones lumnicas, y a su vez exentos de
fluidos (agua, grasa) en el suelo, para que su uti-
lizacin est libre de riesgos en todo momento.
Los desperdicios, manchas de grasa y residuos de
sustancias peligrosas que puedan originar acci-
dentes (provocar cadas) o contaminar el ambien-
te de trabajo. Se han de eliminar inmediatamen-
te depositndolos en los recipientes de material
20 desechable.
SAFETY
Workplaces. Tidiness and cleanliness
Concept
The work area is considered to be the areas at the work centre, wheth-
er or not they are constructed, in which workers must stay or to which
they have access for work reasons. These include areas destined to
resting, first aid, hygiene services and dining rooms.
Hazards
Hazards at work may be multiple and diverse. The
most common ones include:
Staff falling on the same level.
Staff falling on to a different level.
Bangs against stationary objects.
Being run over or hit by vehicles.
Preventative measures
The area and the workplace should be kept
clean and tidy.
The corridors, stairways, circulation lanes and exits
should remain free of obstacles, have optimum
lighting conditions and at the same time be free of
fluids (water, oil, etc.) on the floor, so that their use
is free of hazards at all times.
Waste, oil stains and residues of hazardous sub-
stances that could cause accidents (provoking
falls) or pollute the work environment should be
immediately removed, depositing them in waste
material recipients.

 SEGURIDAD
Mquinas y herramientas
Concepto
Se entiende por mquina todo conjunto de piezas u r-
ganos unidos entre s (de los cuales uno por lo menos
es mvil) y, en su caso, de rganos de accionamiento,
circuitos de mando y de potencia, etc., asociados de
forma solidaria para una aplicacin determinada, en
particular para la transformacin, tratamiento, despla-
zamiento y acondicionamiento de un material.
Riesgos
Atrapamientos por y entre objetos.
Golpes y contactos con elementos mviles de la
mquina.
Proyeccin de partculas.
Medidas preventivas
Toda mquina y herramienta deber tener el marcado
CE, o en su defecto un certificado que homologue
su adecuacin a la normativa legal vigente.
Las mquinas debern tener mantenimiento preventivo y peridico
segn indicaciones del fabricante.
El trabajador deber conocer el adecuado funcionamiento de las m-
quinas y herramientas que utilice en su jornada laboral, as como los
mecanismos y sistemas de seguridad de que disponen las mismas.
Si los sistemas de seguridad no pudieran ser posibles, se dotar al
trabajador de los equipos de proteccin individual necesarios para
cada fin.
Si se proyectan esquirlas o partculas, se instalarn pantallas como
medio de proteccin colectiva, o en su defecto se deber utilizar pro-

teccin ocular.
SAFETY
Machines and tools
Concept
A machine is understood to be the set of pieces or
organs joined to each other (of which at least one of
them moves) and, if relevant, of organs for activating,
control and power circuits, etc., associated in a joint
way for a determined application, in particular for the
transformation, treatment, movement and condition-
ing of a material.
Hazards
Getting trapped by and between objects.
Bangs and contact with mobile elements of the
machine.
Projection of particles.
Preventative measures
All machines and tools must have the CE marking,
or in its defect a certificate that authorises its suitability
to current legal regulations.
The machines must be subject to preventative and periodical
maintenance as per the indications of the manufacturer.
Workers must be suitably informed about the function of the ma-
chine and tools they use during their working day, as well as the safety
mechanisms and systems they have.
If the safety systems are not possible, workers will be provided with
the necessary personal protective equipment for each purpose.
If splinters or particles are projected, screens will be installed as a
collective protective measure or, in their defect, eye protection must
be used.

 SEGURIDAD
Todos los rganos de transmisin (volan-
tes, poleas, tambores, engranajes) deben
estar protegidos. Las carcasas de protec-
cin deben estar bien colocadas y sujetas.
No deben extraerse con la mquina en
marcha.
Bajo ningn concepto deben inutilizarse,
modificarse, y/o anularse los dispositivos
de seguridad.
Al sujetar piezas, cambiar herramientas,
limpiar, reparar, etc., se deber realizar
siempre con la mquina parada, y si es po-
sible sin tensin elctrica.
Los alrededores de las mquinas deben
mantenerse limpios de virutas y derrames
de lquidos de corte.
La manipulacin en el interior de la mquina debe hacerse con sta
parada y con dispositivos que impidan su puesta en marcha sin el con-
sentimiento de la persona que la est manipulando.
Los sistemas de seguridad deben probarse peridicamente para com-
probar que funcionan adecuadamente, por ejemplo: micro ruptores
que bloquean puertas de robots, mandos a doble mano, clulas foto-
elctricas de aproximacin, etc.
Cualquier deficiencia en los mismos debe ser comunicada urgen-
temente a su supervisor. Su funcionamiento deber paralizarse en
caso que pudiera implicar riesgos para el trabajador o para terceras
personas.
Como prendas de proteccin individual deben utilizarse guantes, ga-
fas, calzado de seguridad, u otros en funcin del riesgo al que estemos
expuestos en nuestro puesto de trabajo.
Los accidentes causados por mquinas y herramien-

tas derivan en general en consecuencias graves.
SAFETY
All transmission bodies (steering wheels,
pulleys, drums, cogs) must be protected.

removed while the machine is operating.
