Caminar por el Tolima es retomar los
pasos de un territorio que ha hecho
historia en el pas. Es concebir en
una gran tierra, que representa una
porcin de Colombia, todo el cimiento
de la cultura y la riqueza conque se
levanta la realidad de nuestra nacin.
Caminar por el Tolima es entender
por qu su bandera, vinotinto por la
sangre derramada por los hroes de la
independencia y amarillo por su riqueza
minera, es un smbolo de la decisin,
fortaleza y pujanza que ha representado
a este maravilloso departamento.
Desde esta tierra, cuna de grandes, de
presidentes, de hechos histricos, de
la princesa indgena Yulima (de donde
toma su nombre el departamento),
AngloGold Ashanti quiere demostrar
una vez ms por qu Colombia es
nica, bella y tan diversa. El Tolima,
como tantas otras regiones del pas
donde hemos estado y seguiremos
estando, no slo representa el recurso
para surgir como una empresa
colombiana y tolimense con un amplio
portafolio de cuerpos aurferos en
regiones productoras de oro, sino la
calidez de un pueblo amable, solidario,

Walking Through Tolima means to go
over the steps of a territory that has
made history in Colombia. It means to
conceive a great land that represents
a little part of our country, all the basis
of culture, and the richness contained
in the reality of this nation. Walking
through Tolima is to understand the
colors of its flag: burgundy symbolizing
the blood spilt by Independence heroes,
and yellow symbolizing its mining
riches, strength, and vigor, essential
characteristics of this department.
From this land, birthplace of great men,
presidents, historical events, and of the
indigenous princess Yulima (origin of
the name of the department), AngloGold
Ashanti wants to demonstrate the
singularity, beauty, and diversity of
Colombia.
Tolima represents not only the
resource to emerge as a Colombian
and Tolimense enterprise with a wide
portfolio of auriferous bodies in regions
which produce gold, but also the
warmth of kind, supportive, and strong
people who hope each day to be better.
Colombia, as well as other countries
where we have been, has in its ground

La fuerza del indgena pijao, que luch
para no someterse a la colonizacin,
es la misma determinacin que se ve
en el tolimense, quien, rodeado de una
tierra grata, rica y hermosa, ha crecido
y alcanzado poco a poco el bienestar
que genera el desarrollo. Ese mismo
compromiso es el que tenemos en
AngloGold Ashanti, con el progreso
del departamento, prosperidad de su
gente y con entregar a todos lo mejor de
nuestra empresa.
Es precisamente desde la colonia
cuando Amrica se convirti en el
paraso del oro, y Colombia, con su
tradicin aurfera y reforzada por las
leyendas que todava se mantienen,
como El Dorado, conserva la imagen de
uno de los pases con mayores recursos
de metales preciosos. A lo largo de
nuestra presencia en el territorio
colombiano hemos comprobado que
este recurso no slo es apreciado
por su belleza, sino por el progreso
que desencadena, especialmente en
departamentos como el Tolima.

Grande conformado por el Tolima y
el Huila, ya que en su interior no slo
son 47 municipios, 30 corregimientos,
217 inspecciones de polica, numerosos
caseros y sitios poblados, sino
actividades agropecuarias que producen
arroz, ajonjol, sorgo, caf, algodn,
caa panelera, soya, maz, tabaco,
yuca y frutales. En su maravillosa
tierra tambin se cra ganado vacuno y
porcino. De la misma manera, el suelo
del Tolima es rico en oro y petrleo. Pero
son su gente, su cultura y su historia lo
que realmente embruja al visitante.

It is precisely since colonization that
America became a Paradise of gold,
with its traditional gold-bearing culture
reinforced by numerous legends which
are still alive, Such is the case of El
Dorado, legend that keeps the image as
one of the countries with precious metal
resources. Through all the time that we
have been in the Colombian territory,
we have proved that this resource is
not only appreciated by its beauty, but
also by the development it leads to,

El Tolima es una tierra milenaria que
recibe su nombre como homenaje
a la princesa indgena Yulima, una
sacerdotisa que regentaba un santuario
religioso en cercanas del volcn
Machn, fue hecha prisionera y llevada
hasta Ibagu, en cuya plaza principal
fue martirizada y ejecutada por los
conquistadores.
En el pasado precolombino, el Tolima
fue habitado por diversas familias
pertenecientes a las estirpes Caribe y
Quimbaya, destacando entre ellas el
pueblo Pijao, que resisti a la conquista
espaola durante ms de un siglo,
pagando un alto precio en el curso de
tal lucha. El Tolima, como lo indica su
nombre, guarda memoria del pasado
y se reconoce a s misma como una
tierra aguerrida donde los ms diversos
grupos humanos tuvieron su gnesis,
apogeo y ocaso. Ibagu, su capital,
fue fundada en 1550 por el capitn
espaol Andrs Lpez de Galarza, en
respuesta a la necesidad de establecer
un lugar de paso entre Bogot y la
zona suroccidental del pas. Pero con
el tiempo, tanto Ibagu como el Tolima
dejaron de ser simples lugares de paso
para erigirse como una regin rica en
las ms variadas formas de expresin que hoy por hoy siguen germinando
cultural, con escritores, historiadores,
pintores, msicos y muchos ms que
no tardaron en desarrollar una identidad
que los hace fcilmente reconocibles en
medio de ese vasto panorama llamado
Colombia.
El Tolima es un departamento de vistosa
geografa: desde las nieves perpetuas
de su nevado homnimo hasta las
riberas calurosas del Magdalena, nos
ofrece un paisaje montaoso donde
abundan poblaciones enclavadas en
las montaas o fijadas en las llanuras
mientras son baadas por un sinnmero
de ros, como el Combeima, el Saldaa
y el Coello, que permiten una intensa
actividad minera, agrcola, ganadera y
pesquera. En este escenario desarrollan
todas sus actividades los tolimenses,
cuyo color de piel es el resultado de
las etnias que han poblado la regin
en el trasegar de los tiempos y cuya revaloran cada vez ms. Y frente a todas

after the indigenous princess Yulima,
a priestess who managed a religious
sanctuary near Machin Volcano; she
was caught, made prisoner, and taken
to Ibague during the time of Conquest,
then she was tortured and executed by
the Spanish conquerors.

In the times before the colony, Tolima
was inhabited by some families
belonging to the Caribe and Quimbaya
stock. The indigenous people Pijao,
most noticeable group amongst the
very many, who fought against Spanish
conquest for more than a century, paid
a noble and high price for it. Tolima,
as its name reminds us, keeps its past
memories, and recognizes itself as a
brave land where diverse families had
their origins, their heights, and their
decline. Ibague, its capital city, was
founded in 1550 by the Spanish Captain
Andres Lopez de Galarza as a response
to the necessity to establish a place
to pass through between Bogota and
the south-west of the country. But as
Tolima is a department of eye-catching
landscapes: from the perpetual snow on
the peaks of the homonym mountain
to the hot banks of Magdalena River.
It offers us a mountainous landscape
where there are many towns located
on the peaks, or on the meadows while
they are surrounded by numerous rivers
like Combeima, Saldaa, and Coello,
which allow the region to have an
intense mining, agricultural, livestock,
and fishing activity. In this scenery the
local people, better known as Tolimense,
develop all their activities, having on
their skin the traces of all the ethnic
groups that have inhabited these lands.
Their idiosyncrasy corresponds to a
syncretism in which every ethnic group

five chapters, we go over its ecology,
its environment, its scent, its colors, its
people and their labors, and its culture.

strong musical tradition that covers the
most diverse genres going from the
most popular to the most selective ones;
this shows us their always growing
industrial part, and a population whose
pride and self-esteem are always
encouraged. Facing all these traditions,
we can see Tolima as a region that can

humilde y trabajadora. Es el hermoso y
grato Departamento del Tolima, que bien
merece la pena ser visitado.
Recorrer el Tolima es una aventura
que de seguro queda para siempre en
la memoria. Una tierra inmensa con
todos los climas posibles, derroches
de naturaleza, con largos valles que
parecen pintados con variedad de
verdes, amarillos, ocres y azules
existentes en la paleta del magistral
pintor que remat con un cielo infinito.
Quien llega al Tolima corre el riesgo
de querer quedarse. Y es que sobran
caminando
los motivos. La geografa se encarna
en lo ms profundo de la mirada y el
horizonte se hace interminable, con las

imponentes montaas que conforman
la cordillera central que se extiende a lo
largo del departamento como grandes
nevado del tolima, juntas
obstculos dispuestos a impedir la salida
del visitante, pero que en realidad son la
ruta que abre las puertas a un recorrido
mgico por la tierra del bunde, el tamal,
la lechona y los infinitos arrozales que
se extienden por los valles como una
colcha de retazos.
El recorrido se inicia en Ibagu, la
capital, a donde se llega por tierra o
aire. Al descender del avin el sol se
refleja en los vidrios, en los tejados y
en el asfalto; se siente inmediatamente
que los poros se dilatan para soltar las
primeras gotas de sudor; la ropa se hace
pesada y un halo envuelve el cuerpo y
se llenan los pulmones con un aire tibio
que trae el aroma y la msica de las
montaas que rodean la ciudad.
El trayecto del aeropuerto Perales al
casco urbano de Ibagu tarda unos
10 minutos, durante los cuales ya se
siente que se est en un lugar familiar,
abrazador; el paisaje deja ver la tradicin
arrocera de la regin, con pequeos
cultivos a lado y lado de la carretera.
Nuestra presencia en el Ibagu se dibuja en el horizonte como
una ciudad de calles ordenadas unas

comprobar la belleza de un vienen y van. A los costados de las
calles y en los parques se pueden ver

La Plaza Mayor llama la atencin con

como un monumento a la naturaleza en
pleno centro de la ciudad. La sombra
de estos gigantes cubre casi toda
la plaza, la fuente, las bancas y vas

gente se rene para compartir en su
tiempo libre. Tambin est el Parque de
los Msicos, un lugar que hace honor
a la capital musical de Colombia, con
sus monumentos, su pila con luces y
chorros de agua que dan la sensacin
de hallarse en un concierto; un parque
lleno de vida, de estudiantes practicando
con sus instrumentos, jvenes

corriendo con sus patinetas y parejas de
enamorados sellando pactos con besos
y miradas secretas.
De Ibagu se parte hacia el Nevado
del Tolima, en cuya ruta de ascenso
poco a poco se va cambiando de piso
trmico: en una hora de camino, casi
sin darse cuenta se llega a los tres mil
metros sobre el nivel del mar. Del clido
y abrazador clima de la ciudad se llega
al fro penetrante del pramo, en donde
una aguapanela humeante con queso
es la mejor solucin a las exigencias del
clima mientras se avista la imponencia
de las nieves perpetuas en lo alto de la
montaa. Despus de ver la blancura
resplandeciente y calentar el cuerpo
con la dulce bebida y el queso fresco
hecho por los campesinos de la zona, al
regreso se ve cmo el paisaje cambia de
helechos y eucaliptos hasta llegar a las
dormideras y los platanales.
Como cada da trae su afn, cada ruta
trae su paisaje. El cielo se baa de una
gran variedad de colores entre naranja,

rojo, amarillo, azul, plata, blanco y gris,
una experiencia visual que se puede
apreciar en los amaneceres de los
clidos valles del Tolima. A medida que
pasan las horas y el da entra, el cielo se
tie de azul y el sol se dibuja cada vez
ms desafiante, ms intenso; se siente
cada vez como si se acercara ms y
ms con su calor y su silencio, baando
todo con su intensidad. Las carreteras
se dibujan rectas, infinitas, y el viento
tibio golpea en la cara, recargando el
aliento para divisar a lo lejos montaas
que parecen la cresta de gigantescos
dinosaurios que dormitan agazapados
en la llanura ardiente, enormes
tringulos unos tras otros, azules, verdes
y marrones.
Se encuentran cerros, puestos por
la naturaleza de forma surrealista, en
medio de la planicie, como el de la
Picota, en Alvarado; el de Pacand,
en Natagaima, que adems fue hecho
msica por el maestro Jorge Villamil
Cordovz; el cerro del Cacique Dormido,
entre Chaparral y El Espinal; el Cerro
 Las Dos Tetas y el de los Abechuchos,
en Ortega; El Machn, en Cajamarca; la
Cordillera Central, que sostiene la va
hacia Anzotegui, que tiene como base
un profundo verde de los semilleros de
arroz y se va tiendo de amarillos de la
falda de la montaa hacia arriba, y de
un momento a otro rompe una capa de
vegetacin de color naranja, chocolate,
ocre y visos rosados que a la distancia
parecen una colcha tejida en fina lana o
suave algodn que besa las nubes.
Los valles divididos en cuadros y
rectngulos gigantes, pintados de
todas las gamas de verdes posibles,
divididos por canales de agua, y con sus
bandadas de blancas garzas, son una
constante a lado y lado de las carreteras.
El arroz no slo es uno de los principales
productos del Tolima: es parte de su
cultura, de su paisaje y de su identidad.
Las clidas planicies de pastos amarillos
y de escasos arbustos son el lugar
donde pastan los caballos, las reses,
las ovejas y las cabras, donde se ven
venadillo
solitarias y tranquilas las casas de techos
de hojas, paredes de barro pisado,
ventanas pequeas detrs de las cuales
habita gente trabajadora y humilde,
campesinos que desde tiempos remotos
aprendieron a sacarle al mejor provecho
a esa tierra agreste, a sobrellevar esas
tardes ardientes del Tolima.
A medida que se avanza por la carretera
nacional, y mientras transcurre el da, el
horizonte cambia de color, cada cerro,
montaa y valle al ocaso se baa con los
ltimos rayos rojizos del sol. Los ros se
hacen espejos de ese cielo que abre sus
puertas a estrellas y luceros que danzan
en el infinito al ritmo de chicharras
y grillos. Los ros le van dejando a la
noche la brisa fresca y su cancin de
cuna, le dejan el reflejo de la luna, le
dejan sueos y le dejan oro.
El canto de las aves hace del amanecer
una fiesta a la que no se puede faltar. La
tierra huele a un nuevo da, las plantas
oscurecidas en las sombras de la noche
recobran sus colores, el cielo empieza
ataco
a tomar su bao de azul, dejando colar
las primeras luces del sol y las flores
abren sus ptalos para, gustosas, darles
la bienvenida. Se siente toda esta magia
invadir el olfato y la vida para filtrarse en
la sangre y recorrer el cuerpo.
Al adentrarse en los bosques tolimenses
se encuentran gigantes rboles
ancestrales, riachuelos y cascadas:
las hay pequeas que brotan entre
las rocas, como hilos de agua que
se escapan del musgo para unirse a
alguna quebrada que ms adelante
formar grandes cadas de agua, como
la cascada Jimnez, en Falan, que tiene
una cada de ms de veinte metros de
aguas cristalinas que brillan con los
reflejos del sol, mientras que su choque
produce un sonido hipntico.
Tierra de oficios y gente noble
En una geografa tan diversa, las
opciones de vida y trabajo tambin
lo son y es por eso que en este
departamento se puede encontrar una
gran variedad de artes y oficios.
 Muchas de las actividades que se
realizan en el Tolima son heredadas de
sus ancestros pijaos, como la pesca,
el cultivo de pltano, yuca y maz, la
minera y la alfarera. Otras llegaron con
la conquista espaola, como la herrera,
la talabartera y el cultivo de arroz y caf,
los trapiches y los hornos de cal.
Estas actividades se siguen realizando
de manera tradicional y son an la
fuente de ingresos de campesinos
que han aprendido el oficio de sus
padres y abuelos, como don Alfredo,
un abuelo de 78 aos que lleva toda su
vida trabajando el campo, cultivando
caa para hacer panela en la vereda
El Progreso, en Planadas, al sur del
departamento.
Con sus manos manchadas del jugo de
la caa y el holln de los hornos en los
que con paciencia y sabidura cocina
el jugo dulce que ha de convertirse en
la panela, cuenta que ha realizado este
trabajo desde que era nio. Nosotros
fuimos de los primeros en llegar a estas
planadas
tierras. En esa poca no haba ni seas
de carretera, slo un caminito all abajo,
por la orilla del ro, dice sealando con
la mirada y estirando una de sus manos
curtidas por el trabajo de tantos aos.
Llegamos en 1959 a cultivar la tierra.
Ac se siembra caa, caf, pltano, yuca
y cacao y se hace la panela, cuenta
mientras atiza el fuego con el bagazo de
la caa.
La jornada para hacer la panela empieza
a las tres de la madrugada, cuando
don Alfredo, su hijo y un trabajador,
machete en mano, salen a cortar las
varas de caa bajo la luz de la luna,
que luego pasan por el trapiche para
sacarle su jugo fresco, verdoso y dulce
que hervir ms tarde en los calderos,
soltando en cada bocanada de vapor
su perfume dulzn que se impregna
en el ambiente, en la ropa y en la piel.
Para sacar una buena produccin, estos
tres hombres deben cortar una media
tonelada de caa, luego exprimirla en la
noria de un trapiche impulsado por una
mula que camina en crculos sin llegar

a ninguna parte, mientras cada caa
cilndrica entra en el molino para salir
hecha jirones de bagazo que alimentar
el fuego, mientras don Alfredo, con la
sabidura de los aos, espera paciente el
final de su jornada.
Al hervir, los calderos llenos de guarapo
dejan salir todo el perfume dulce de este
lquido que poco a poco se va haciendo
espeso, y el olor a panela va naciendo
en cada uno de los tres calderos. En el
primero est el guarapo que recin ha
sido vertido; en el segundo se encuentra
una infusin ms espesa que burbujea
lentamente y deja una capa de espuma
en los bordes de la olla... espuma que
golosamente arranca con sus pequeos
dedos el nieto de don Alfredo para
llevarla a su boca. En el ltimo de los
calderos hierve una masa espesa que
aguarda por las anteriores para dar
el punto y ser fundida en la gavera
o molde, reposar hasta solidificarse
totalmente y quedar lista para endulzar
el caf que cada maana acompaa a
miles de colombianos.
 En la va que de Ibagu conduce a
Rovira vive don Juan Machado, que
ha dedicado sus 80 aos a trabajar en
los hornos de cal. En su cabeza el pelo
parece pintado por la cal, blanco como
el interior del horno recubierto del polvo
de la roca caliza cocinada por das a ms
de mil grados centgrados. A su edad
sigue siendo un hombre vigoroso que
trabaja de sol a sol en sus dos caleras,
cada una de las cuales puede producir
hasta cien toneladas de cal, que es
usada en la metalurgia, en procesos
agrcolas, para blanquear paredes y
hasta para pelar maz con el que se
preparan mute y arepas.
Su piel morena pegada a los huesos es
reflejo de aos de contacto con este
producto, aunque l afirma que la cal
no es daina. Yo creo es que de pronto
algunas personas, por la ambicin de
hacer plata, no se cuidan y se ponen a
aguantar hambre, porque el trasnocho y
estar metido entre el horno sacando la
cal no acaba. Yo tengo miles de horas de
estar trabajando horas extras, mientras

saca paladas del polvo blanco. El horno
tiene unos dos metros de dimetro por
tres de alto; la cal est por todos lados,
se pega a la ropa, los zapatos y la piel;
huele a tierra, a sequedad, a encierro.
Tengo cinco hijas y dos hijos, pero ac
no vive sino el menor; los otros estn
en Bogot, trabajando. Cada uno ya
hizo su vida por all y vienen de vez en
cuando a visitarnos, dice con serenidad
mientras su mirada se pierde en el
infinito blanco de los muros de cal y un
suspiro muy discreto se escapa de su
pecho.
En Cajamarca, la despensa agrcola
de Colombia, como es conocido este
municipio, est un grupo de mujeres
emprendedoras y trabajadoras que
se unieron para hacerle frente a las
dificultades y crearon la Asociacin
de Mujeres de Anaime, ASOMUA,
en la que se capacitan para realizar
actividades que les contribuyan a
mejorar su calidad de vida y la de su
comunidad.

Estas veinticinco mujeres cabeza de
familia, con la ayuda de una ingeniera
de alimentos y otra industrial, han
aprendido a hacer productos derivados
de la arracacha, un tubrculo que se
consigue con facilidad en la regin.
De su harina hacen galletas, arequipe,
tortas y otras delicias que se han
convertido en una fuente de ingresos
para vivir dignamente y a crecer como
personas.
Las mujeres de la sociedad alternan
sus labores cotidianas con las
capacitaciones en manipulacin de
alimentos, elaboracin de productos
lcteos y administracin de negocios.
Son cinco aos durante los cuales
han aprendido a ver la vida de una
forma ms amplia, a conocer nuevas
posibilidades de trabajo y de ingreso.
Con el agua por encima de las rodillas,
un pantaln corto, camiseta y a pleno
rayo del inclemente sol del medio da,
clava su pala en lo profundo del agua,
la saca chorreando, luchando contra el

y trabajadora. Se dedica a sacar arena
del ro para venderla, una labor que
exige de mucha fuerza y generalmente
realizan hombres. Pero Marta, que es
una mujer emprendedora, madre y
cabeza de familia, se le midi al negocio.
La acompaa su hija Luisa Fernanda, de
14 aos, que le ayuda a sacar la arena
del ro cuando regresa del colegio.
Lleg a Coello, procedente de Armero
Guayabal, en busca de oportunidades.
Ahora es duea de su tiempo, su
negocio es el ro y su trabajo es pesado.
Lleva tres aos sacndole las entraas a
ese caudal.
Don Luis Antonio, con su corta estatura
de poco ms de un metro, es un abuelo
que le sonre a la vida mientras toca su
tiple y con sus pequeas manos teje
enjalmas, cinchas y alpargates. Durante
coello
ocho aos fue artista del circo Cruceli,
que naufrag en el mar. All realizaba
tres actos: payaso, canto y baile.
Despus regres a El Lbano, su tierra.
Sentado en una butaca hecha a su
medida, con sus manos hbiles les
da forma a los hilos de fique para
convertirlos en trenzas con las que
luego har las alpargatas, amansadores
y cinchas. En un taller de nueve metros
cuadrados hay colgadas algunas
enjalmas, montones de paja con las
que rellena el apero que llevarn al
lomo burros y mulas de carga, y las
alpargatas. Hay una cama para la siesta
de la tarde y para cuando lo agarra la
noche trabajando, un retablo con los
trastos de la ltima comida, y su tiple.
A sus 70 y tantos aos, don Luis cuenta
con entusiasmo sus ancdotas en
el circo, su viaje a Cartagena con el
grupo de msicos de la tercera edad
y los pormenores de su trabajo. Es un
hombre alegre, risueo y conversador
con el que se pueden pasar horas

escuchndolo tocar su tiple mientras
cuenta sus historias.
El Tolima tambin le ha dado grandes
figuras a Colombia, personas que
han conseguido reconocimientos,
dejando en alto el nombre del pas,
en reas como la ciencia, la literatura,
las artes y la poltica. Una reconocida
nmina de presidentes de la repblica
son hijos de esta tierra, dentro de los
que se encuentran Manuel Murillo
Toro, Alfonso Lpez Pumarejo y Daro
Echanda. Cientficos como Manuel Elkin
Patarroyo, quien an investiga para crear
la vacuna contra la malaria. Msicos
reconocidos, como Silva y Villalba y Los
Tolimenses. Escritores de renombre,
como lvaro Mutis, Germn Santamara
y William Ospina, hacen parte de
esa gala de ese ramillete de grandes
personajes del Tolima.
Un mundo de mitos y leyendas
Cada rincn del Tolima tiene su propia
identidad. Una tierra donde los muertos
hacen de las suyas en las noches
 oscuras, cuando la luna llena es una
aparicin fantasmal, cmplice de
apariciones lgubres que se sirven de
las sombras de los rboles para salir de
repente a exteriorizar sus penas.
El Mohn de largas cabelleras, garras
de fiera, sombrero y tabaco, emerge
de los ros para llevarse a las doncellas
que hipnotiza con msica. Es un ser
misterioso, mgico, capaz de hacer
grandes fechoras como volcar
embarcaciones, enredar redes de
pescar y ahuyentar al ms valiente de
los pescadores. Mtico ser ancestral
que vive en las creencias colectivas,
respetado y temido por los habitantes
de las riberas de los ros, representado
en narraciones orales transmitidas de
generacin en generacin, amo y seor
de las profundidades de las aguas.
Candilejas que persiguen a quienes
andan en malos pasos, tunjos que
rasgan el silencio de la noche con su
llanto, la Madre de Agua que encanta
a los nios traviesos para llevarlos a
saldaa purificacin
sus dominios en las profundidades
de los ros, la Patasola, que emboba
y enamora a los hombres traviesos
para desaparecerlos en las oscuras
entraas de los bosques y brujas
que vuelan en las noches para hacer
sus hechizos y espantar con sus
lacerantes y rechinantes carcajadas a los
desprevenidos caminantes.
Son historias que los abuelos del
Tolima cuentan y aseguran haber
vivido. Escalofriantes narraciones
que atemorizan a nios y grandes.
Momentos que renen a las familias
en torno a los fogones que mueren
lentamente mientras los ancianos
dejan en la memoria de los suyos toda
esta riqueza oral que naci en tiempos
remotos de la imaginacin o de la
realidad, una realidad que nadie quisiera
encontrase en una noche oscura de los
campos tolimenses.
Una tierra con identidad propia
Llegar a esta regin es encontrarse con
un mundo rico en paisajes, colores,
sabores, olores, gente clida y amable:
es llegar a una tierra donde vale la pena
tomarse un tiempo para explorar la gran
variedad de posibilidades que se quedan
en la memoria para siempre.
Los tolimenses reciben al visitante con
amabilidad. Descendientes de los indios
pijaos, de los que conservan sus rasgos,
tradiciones y su amor por la tierra y la
libertad, son trabajadores incansables,
alegres y festivos.

sanjuanero, pasillo, bambuco, rajalea
y caa brava son algunos de los ritmos
que se interpretan y bailan en esta
tierra en la que est la capital musical
de Colombia, Ibagu, y que adems
cuenta con una gran variedad de
fiestas populares, como San Pedro, en
El Espinal; el Festival de Bambuco, las
Fiestas del Ro, en Honda; el Festival
Nacional de Duetos; el Festival del
Retorno, y otras tantas que se celebran
en cada municipio al comps de
tamboras, tiples, chuchos, guitarras,

To walk Tolima is an adventure that,

after. This is a vast land with as many
climates available there are, with a
profuse display of nature, with extensive
valleys that seem to have been deftly

in escalating, one has the experience
of changing from temperature to the
next: after an hour of journey, and
almost unnoticed, one can reach the

whiteness, and warming up the body
with the local sweet drink and freshly
made cheese produced by the local
farmers, during the journey back down,
one can notice nature changing from
ferns and eucalyptus until one can see
dormideras, small plants that sleep
when they are touched or when the sun
is down, and plantain trees all around.
Each day has got its rush, as each route
has got its own view. The sky dresses
in a varied shade of orange, red, yellow,
blue, silver, white, and gray, a visual
experience that can be lived during
dawn in the warm valleys of El Tolima.
As the hours are spent and the day
takes over, the sky taints itself a shade
of blue as the sun proposes itself ever
so defying, so intense; it is almost as if
it got closer to the Earth with its warmth
and its silence, bathed in its very
intensity. The roads reveal themselves
as straight, infinite, and the wind blows
 in ones face, bringing new strength so
that one can continue searching for new
horizons that in the distance deceive the
spectator, for one could easily see the
resemblance of the crests lying away
as huge sleeping dinosaurs would, the
bluest, greenest, brownest triangles
rising away in the in the distant planes.
One can find mountains, simply placed
there by mother nature in a surreal
manner, in the middle of the prairie,
like the peak of La Picota, located in
Alvarado; or El Pacand mountain,
located in Natagaima, which was
made music by the famous Colombian
musician Jorge Villamil Cordovz; the
peak of El Cacique Dormido, which
stands between El Chaparral and El
Espinal; the peak known as Cerro Las
Dos Tetas and the Abechuchos peak,
both located in Ortega; the peak of
El Machn, located in Cajamarca; la
Cordillera Central, Central Range, which
offers the road towards Anzotegi,
which stands over the base of the
deepest green plantations of rice, and

taints as it rises up the mountainside,
hints of yellow. Without warning,
in a sudden way, a colored band of
vegetation crosses the ridge from one
side to the other, ranging from orange to
brown, from ochre to pink shades that in

The valleys split in huge squares and
rectangles, painted over with many tones
of green, separated by canals, lying
still with its flock of herons, which are
a constant feature at both sides of the
roads. Rice is not only one of the main
products in El Tolima: it is a part of their
culture, of their view, and of their identity.
The warm prairies of yellow grassland
and scarce bushes are the place where
horses, livestock, sheep, and goats graze;
where the houses made of leaves, walls
of pressed clay, and small windows,
peacefully stand in the distance; houses
in which humble hard working people
live, humble people who are farmers

who from the oldest of times learned
to benefit from a rugged land, farmers
who learned to cope with the heat of the
blazing afternoons in El Tolima.
As one rides the main road, commonly
known as Carretera Nacional, and while
the day is spent away, the horizon
changes in tonality. Every mountain and
prairie, at dusk, covers itself with the
very last rays of the reddest sun. The
rivers become mirrors of the sky; a sky
that opens its gates to the evening stars
that happily dance away in the distance
to the symphonies of cicadas and
grasshoppers. The same rivers that at
night leave behind a fresh breeze and a
lullaby, leave behind the reflection of the
moon, leave behind dreams, and gold.
The chirping of the birds at sunrise
incites a bash to which none can resist.
The soil smells of a new day; the plants,
darkened by shadows of the night,
regain their bright colors; the sky takes
an early bath of blue, allowing the first
beams of light to sneak through, and
the flowers open their petals in order to,
joyfully, welcome them. All this magic
simply takes over the sense of smell,
it takes over life itself to blend in to
the blood inside ones veins, and run
throughout the body.
As one walks into the forests of El
Tolima, one can find colossal elderly
trees, streams, and waterfalls: there are
some that are quite small, so small they
are that they flow timidly from the rocks,
as timid as weak threads escaping from
the moss to join a bigger streams that
further down are bound to become
great falls; such is the case of Cascada
Jimenez, located in the municipality of
Falan, which falls over the crest line in
cascades of crystal clear waters from
65 feet over ones head. These waters
sparkle with the reflections of the sun,
while its stroke produces a type of
hypnotic sound.
Land of Labor and Noble People
In the midst of such diverse geography,
the options of life and work are just
planadas
as diverse, and for this reason in this
department one can easily observe
many types of arts and toils.
Many of the activities that are done in
El Tolima are directly inherited from the
Pijaos, indigenous ancestors who lived
in the region; such toils include fishing,
growing plantain, plantations of casava
and corn, as well as mining and pottery
production. Others came with the
Spaniards, such is the case of smithy,
saddlery, and the farming of rice and
coffee, as well as mills and ovens made
of limestone. Many of these activities
are preserved as part of the tradition in
the region, and are, consequently, the
means of survival for farmers who have
learned the tasks from their parents and
grandparents. Don Alfredo is a 78 year
old man who has worked the land all his
life at the Vereda El Progreso, located in
Planadas, growing sugarcane to make
panela, a byproduct of this crop.
With his hands stained by the juices
of the cane and the residue from the
planadas
ovens where, with much patience and
wisdom, he mixes the sweet substance
which will later become the panela, he
confesses that he has done this since
he was a child. We were amongst the
first to come to these lands. At that
time, there were no signs of roads, there
was just a tiny path down there, by the
riverbank., he states while pointing
with a sharp stare in his eyes, and as he
stretches his tainted hand, consequence
of years of hard labor. We arrived here
in 1959, to cultivate the land. Here,
we plant sugarcane, coffee, plantain,
cassava, and cocoa, and, we make
panela. He narrates all this, while he
moves, with leftovers of cane sticks, the
carbon lit stones around to make the fire
burn more vividly.
The labor shift for panela makers begins
at 3 in the morning, when don Alfredo,
his son, and another worker, machete at
hand, leave their homes in order to cut
the canes under the light of the moon;
cane, which is then passed through
the mill so that its fresh juice can be

extracted, green and sweet, it is to boil
later on in the cauldrons, releasing in
every mouthful of vapor its sweet aroma
that penetrates the air, the clothes,
and the skin. In order to get a good
production, these three men must cut
half a dozen tons of canes, then, they
need to extract their juice by putting it
on the wheel pulled by a mule, whose
job is to walk in endless circles, while
each cylinder cane goes into the mill
only to come out the other end made
shreds, waste that will feed the fierce
fire, while don Alfredo, with the wisdom
that years have granted him, awaits
patiently the end of his days work.
When the cauldrons full of guarapo are
boiling, they release all the sweet scent
of this native fermented drink made
from sugar syrup; little by little, the
mixture becomes thick, and the aroma
of the panela begins to emerge from
each one of the three pots. In the first
pot, you may find the guarapo of sugar
syrup, which has recently been served;
in the second of the three, you may find
 a denser infusion that simmers away,
while leaving a thin layer of froth at the
lining of the pot froth that is picked
up by the small fingers of don Alfredos
sweet tooth grandson, and quickly
taken to his mouth. In the last of the
three pots, a thick substance simmers,
awaiting for just the right touch, so that
it could be poured into tins, so that it
could be left to set, and become entirely
solid, thus being ready to be mixed into
a fresh cup of coffee for thousands of
Colombians who enjoy this.
On the road from Ibagu to Rovira is
where Juan Machado lives. He has
dedicated his 80 years of age to the
labor of making panela in ovens made of
limestone. On his head, his hair would
seem to have been painted by the lime,
white as the inside of an oven covered
by the chalk cooked for days at a time
at over a thousand degrees centigrade.
At his age, he is still a vigorous man
who works from sunrise to sunset
in his two ovens, each of which can
produce around one hundred tons of
planadas
limestone, which is used in metallurgy,
in agricultural processes, used to bleach
walls and even to peel corn with which
they prepare mute and arepas, typical
food of the region.
His dark skin covering his bones is
evidence of years of contact with this
product, even though he assures that
limestone is not dangerous. I believe
that maybe some people, due to
ambition of making money, dont take
care of themselves and do not eat well,
because not sleeping enough hours,
and being inside those ovens taking
out the lime does not harm you. I have
been working for thousands of hours of
overtime, while he retrieves shovelfuls
of limestone. The oven has at least 6.5
ft diameter and 10 ft tall; the lime is
everywhere, it sticks to the clothes, to
the shoes, to the skin; it smells like soil,
like dryness, like a room that has been
locked away for a long time.
I have five daughters and two sons, but
only the youngest lives here with me;

the others are in Bogot, working, each
one has a life over there, and they come
every once in a while to visit us. Says
the man with serenity, while his glance
gets lost in the infinitely white of the
walls of lime; a sigh discreetly gets away
from his chest.
In Cajamarca, the agricultural warehouse
of Colombia, there is a hard working
group of women who have conformed
the Asociacin de Mujeres de Anaime,
ASOMUA, joined strengths in order
to become active members who seek
knowledge and skills that can contribute
in the bettering of their quality of lives.
These 25 women, all heads of
household, along with the help provided
by a food engineer and an industrial
engineer, have learned to make products
such as arracacha, a root that is found
generously throughout the region. From
its flour, cookies can be made, arequipe,
cakes, and other delicacies that have
become a source of income for these
people to live dignifying lives.

in Cajamarca, originally from Armero

business is the river, and her job is hard.
She has been working for three years at
taking the guts out of the river.
Don Luis Antonio, with his scarce height
of about 3 feet, is an old man who
smiles at life while he plays the tiple,
and with his small hands he weaves
enjalmas, cinchas, and alpargates. For
eight years, he was an artist at Cruceli
Circus, which sunk at sea. There, he did
three acts: he was a clown, he sang, and
he danced. Afterwards, he returned to El
Lbano, his homeland.
Sitting on a bench custom made for
him, with his gifted hands, he gives life

to the threads of fique, natural fibers of
a plant that goes by the same name,
in order to make them into braids,
which will later on become alpargatas,
amansadores, and cinchas. In a shop
of 9 square meters there are enjalmas
hanging, lots of hay with which aperos
are stuffed, so that mules and donkeys
can transport them elsewhere. Certainly,
the alpargatas as well. There is a bed
for the siesta of the afternoon, and for
whenever the nightfall surprises him still
working, there is also an altarpiece with
recent dishes, and his tiple.
At seventy, don Luis tells his anecdotes
with enthusiasm at the circus, his trip
to Cartagena with a group of musicians
of his same age, and the troubles of his
job. He is a happy man, ready to laugh,
and a good conversationalist with whom
hours may be spent listening to him as
he narrates the stories of his life.
El Tolima has also granted Colombia
with people who have received
acknowledgements, thus leaving the
 country in a good position; this, in
areas such as science, literature, arts,
and politics. A noticeable number of
presidents of Colombia are originally
from this region, amongst which
one can find Manuel Murillo Toro,
Alfonso Lpez Pumarejo and Daro
Echanda. Also, scientists like Manuel
Elkin Patarroyo, who is still at work
on the issue of creating the vaccine
for the Malaria. This region also has
great musicians, acknowledged ones,
Silva and Villalba, and Los Tolimenses.
Some of the known writers are lvaro
Mutis, Germn Santamara, and William
Ospina. All of which make a part of the
varied talents of the region of El Tolima.
A World of Myth and Legend
Every corner of El Tolima has its own
identity. A land where the dead do their
own thing during dark nights, when
there is full moon there is an apparition
of a ghostly image, accomplice to
morbid apparitions that await the
shadows of trees so that they can come
out to expel their grief.

He is indeed a mysterious creature,
magical, capable of causing big trouble

while the fishermen are working, as
the Mohan is ready to drive away any
brave fisher. This mythical being lives
in the beliefs of the local people, is
respected, and feared by the inhabitants
of the riverbanks; he is represented in
stories told orally from generation to
generation, The Mohan, God and Lord of
the depths of the waters.
Lights that follow people who do not
behave properly; tunjos, indigenous
sculptures that break the silent night
with their cries, Madre de Aguas,
Mother Water who tricks children in
mischief, so that she can take them with
her into the depths of the rivers; the
Patasola, one foot creature, whose jinx
will deceive and make naughty men fall

or reality, a reality that no one would
want to encounter in a dark night at El
Tolima.

many other festivals celebrated in each
municipality in the company of their
tiples, chuchos, guitars, esterillas, and
a great variety of typical instruments,
and of course, along with their dances
loaded with folklore movements and
playful gestures, adorned with their
flower colored dresses.
The food is one of the biggest
temptations to give into: the very
popular tamales, corn patties wrapped
in plantain leaves; the well known
lechona, made in brick ovens, served
with arepas made of white corn, which
in turn is eaten along with insulso
and chicha; the Viudo de Capaz, a
fish cooked underground; achiras,
small biscuits, and cakes, cheese,
plantain patties, exotic tropical fruit, like
mangostinos. The food tradition of the
region is dignifying of gods and kings.
Discovering El Dorado: The Legend
It is a total of 14.6407 square miles that
enchant you, miles of far-reaching rivers
rich in fishing and in minerals; miles
and miles of warm valleys, plantain and
coffee, and corn plantations; miles of
the most varied tastes, richest rhythms
for demanding ears; joyful dances,
colorful sunrise settings, and sunsets full
of nostalgia, indigenous reservations,
ports, towns with unique architecture,
and a long list of great things that make
this department a place to return to.

 Antes de empezar el ascenso al alto
de La Lnea, en la va Panamericana
que de Bogot conduce al Pacfico, se
encuentra el municipio tolimense de
Cajamarca, que en lengua quechua
significa Tierra fra.
Ubicado sobre una meseta truncada
por el can del ro Anaime, tiene una
temperatura media de 18 C, que al
anochecer baja casi hasta los 8 C, y
donde, a pesar del fro, en la mayora
de las noches se puede disfrutar de un
cielo despejado.
Como sus primeros moradores, la
historia incluye a la comunidad indgena
de los Anaima y los Tochas, en cuyos
territorios fue fundada en 1550 la ciudad
de Ibagu, pero varias razones obligaron
a su traslado al lugar que hoy ocupa la
capital del Departamento del Tolima.
Este municipio tolimense, conocido
como La despensa agrcola de
Colombia, naci hacia 1867 en el sitio
que hoy ocupa el corregimiento de
Nuestros

Anaime, a donde llegaron colonizadores
antioqueos que desarrollaron
actividades agropecuarias y mineras.
En octubre de 1912, el arzobispo Ismael
Perdomo compr unas tierras del sitio
conocido como La Meseta en el can
de Anaime, al que le dio el nombre
de San Miguel de Perdomo, en lo que
haba sido la hacienda Cajamarca.
Al ao siguiente, y en un lapso de
27 das, se exploraron tres nuevos
nombres para la poblacin: Herrera,
Quesada y, finalmente, Cajamarca,
que fue reconocido por la Asamblea
departamental en 1916.
En este municipio, lleno de
tradiciones y enriquecido por grandes
acontecimientos, palpita un espritu
acogedor, que desde finales de 2006
recibi y ha acompaado a AngloGold
Ashanti. As, al hablar del Tolima y hacer
un recorrido por la corta historia del
proyecto de exploracin La Colosa, es
justo rendir un homenaje a cada uno de
los casi 20 mil cajamarcunos.
Este proyecto de exploracin, ubicado
en el sector montaoso de La Guala,
ha generado, hasta ahora, 1.200
empleos, entre directos e indirectos,
principalmente para habitantes del
municipio. Para esto, fue conformado un
equipo social que ha adelantado su labor
con la comunidad en temas diversos
y fundamentales, como capacitacin
tcnica en proyectos productivos,
concertacin de polticas pblicas,
inversin en infraestructura local (vas,
escuelas, salud), educacin ambiental y
mejoramiento de prcticas ambientales.
Desde la llegada de la empresa a la
zona, Cajamarca se ha sumado a la
labor de gelogos, tcnicos y operarios
para sacar adelante este proyecto. Una
Cajamarca visionaria y segura de que el
compromiso responsable de AngloGold
Ashanti con la comunidad y el medio
ambiente, aporta al desarrollo de la

 Before starting the journey that
conduces to the high point of La Lnea,
on the Panamericana road that from
Bogot leads to the Pacific, one can find
the municipality of Cajamarca, which in
Quechua language means Cold Land.
It is located on the plateau, truncated by
the cannon of the Anaime river, with a
temperature of 18 degree Celsius, and
where, in spite of the cold, most of the
nights, one can enjoy a blue, clear sky.
As the very first inhabitants, history
recognizes the indigenous community
of the Anaima and the Tochas, territories
which were founded in 1550 on the city
of Ibagu, but several reasons forced
its transfer to the current location of the
department of Tolima.
This municipality of Tolima, came to be
around 1867; it is the very place where
the political subdivision of Anaime lies
today, locality that was originally named
by San Miguel de Perdomo, place
that had been known as the Hacienda

Cajamarca. The following year, and in
the span of twenty seven days, three
new names were considered in the
naming of the land: Herrera, Quesada,
and Cajamarca; the latter of the three
was acknowledged by the Department
Assembly in 1916.
The municipality is close to two of the
most important touristic settings of the
country, located in the Parque Nacional
Los Nevados: the volcano Cerro Machn
and the Nevado del Tolima.
In this municipality, full of traditions,
enhanced by great happenings, the
embracing spirit that since the end
of 2006, received and accompanied
AngloGold Ashanti in its search, reason
for which, when referring to Tolima, and
when reviewing the brief history of the
exploration site at La Colosa, it is just
to acknowledge a tribute to the almost
twenty million inhabitants of Cajamarca.
This project of exploration, located in
the mountainous area of La Gaula, has
originated, until the most recent date,
1,200 posts, including direct hiring
programs and outsourcing, mainly for
the inhabitants of the municipality. For
this, a social team was conformed,
thus allowing significant advances with
the community in terms of diverse and
fundamental topics; such programs
include technical training, compromise
of public policies, investment in local
infrastructure (roads, schools, health,
etc.), environmental education, and the
bettering of environmental practices and
dynamics.
Since the arrival of the company to
the region, Cajamarca has greatly
contributed to the labor of geologists,
technicians, and workers in order to
achieve the goals of the project. A
visionary and confident Cajamarca
considers that the commitment of
AngloGold Ashanti with the community
and the environment does indeed
contribute to development and progress
of the entire region.

 Los pueblos que han habitado el sitio
donde se encuentra Ibagu han tenido
ese impulso irrevocable por defender su
autonoma, su dignidad, sus derechos
humanos. Fundada el 14 de octubre
de 1550, donde hoy est Cajamarca,
fue necesario volverla a fundar, el 7 de
febrero de 1551, por los ataques de
los pijaos, segn unos, y por razones
de orden administrativo y estratgico,
segn otros.
La lucha de los conquistadores
espaoles con los pijaos es, sin lugar
a dudas, el episodio ms sangriento
de la conquista y la colonizacin de
nuestras tierras colombianas, pues
dur ms de un siglo de permanentes
enfrentamientos armados. Lucharon
con denuedo, con tenacidad, por varias
generaciones consecutivas, hasta que
al fin fueron derrotados, pero nunca
sometidos. En Chaparral, hacia 1610, se
enfrentaron las tropas comandadas por
Juan de Borja, con el indomable cacique
Calarc, mximo jefe de los aguerridos
pijaos. Su espritu belicoso parece haber
el valor
de nuestra
gente
revivido en la sangre del pueblo mestizo,
en las pocas en que Jos Antonio
Galn se subleva en Santander y viene al
Tolima a elevar la voz de la insurgencia
contra la opresin de los descendientes
de los conquistadores espaoles. Una
vez iniciado el movimiento comunero
en 1781, los patriotas de Ibagu se
aprestaron a ingresar a l. El mismo
valor que demostr la ciudad durante
la Conquista y la Colonia, volvi a hacer
presencia en los das turbulentos y
azarosos de nuestra independencia
nacional. Simn Bolvar pas varias
veces por sus calles. Francisco de Paula
Santander fund en ella uno de los
primeros y ms importantes institutos
de educacin, el Colegio de San Simn.
En 1812, la ciudad fue visitada por el
prcer Camilo Torres y por un grupo de
diputados al Congreso, partidarios del
sistema federalista, en el plan de instalar
en la ciudad nuestro primer parlamento
de origen democrtico.
Muchos otros acontecimientos notables
vinculan a Ibagu con la lucha por la
libertad y la democracia. En los albores
mismos de nuestra independencia,
tenemos, por ejemplo, dos momentos
estelares. El primero, es el proceso
seguido contra Bolvar por insurgente,
en 1817. El segundo, es el paso del
general Manuel de Serviez, en 1813, con
el propsito de organizar tropas para la
independencia.
El Libertador Simn Bolvar pas por
Ibagu, en 1824, despus de la victoria
en la batalla de Ayacucho. Sus tropas,

Gran parte de nuestra historia regional
est por investigarse y escribirse. Y
la historia regional es algo que cada
da cobra mayor importancia en el
mundo contemporneo. Las fechas y
los nombres de los lugares son muy
importantes en la historia, ya que con
ellos tenemos el sentido del espacio y
del tiempo. Pero no basta el dnde y
el cundo. Porque la historia la hace
alguien, y ese alguien son los pueblos.
Y los pueblos tienen su manera de
hacer las cosas en cada momento y en
cada circunstancia. De tal manera que
a ese dnde y a ese cundo habr que
agregarle un quin y un cmo. Porque
cada pueblo le imprime a su propio
acontecer el sello de su personalidad.
Y una de las constantes en la historia
de la tierra tolimense es su indeclinable
fidelidad a los principios y valores,
especialmente aquellos que tienen que
ver con su autonoma, su libertad, su
dignidad y su independencia personal.
Porque en ellos est impreso, con
caracteres de legtima dignidad y noble
permanencia el sello mismo de su
espritu.

is have always being characterized
by the sense of defending their
autonomy, dignity and human rights.
Ibague was founded on October 14th,
1550, in the place where the urban
area of the neighboring municipality
is located today. It was necessary to
found it again, according to different
versions, due to the constant attacks
by the indigenous Pijaos, or because of
administrative and strategic reasons.
The fight between Spanish colonizers
and indigenous pijaos constitutes
one of the bloodiest episodes in
Colombian history during conquest and
colonization, lasting more than a century
of frequent combats. Indigenous people
fought tenaciously during various
consecutive generations until they
were defeated but not subjugated.
Pijaos people commanded by Cacique
Calarc, their principal leader, combated
Spanish troops lead by Juan de Borja,
in Chaparral, 1610. It seems that the
war-like spirit of the Pijaos flowed into

people to revolt in Santander, and
after that traveled to Tolima in order to
claim against the Spanish descendants
oppression. In 1781, the Comuneros
Movement began, and patriots from
Ibague hurried up to become part of it.
This same bravery shown during
conquest and colonization appeared
once again in those hard and stormy
years of our National Independence.
Simon Bolivar walked many times
through the streets of Ibague, and
Francisco de Paula Santander founded
one of the firsts and most important
schools in this city: San Simon School
In 1812, Camilo Torres, and a group
of congressmen who agreed with the
creation of the federal sytem, visited the
city with the aim of founding the first
parliament with democratic origins.
Many other notorious events relate
Ibague to the struggle for Liberty
and democracy. In the beginnings
of Independence we can find two
outstanding moments. The first one
is the prosecution proceeding against
Simon Bolvar for rebellion, in 1817. The
second one is when General Manuel
de Serviez traveled to this city to recruit
people and organize troops to fight for
Independence.
Simon Bolivar, the Liberator, went
through Ibague in 1824 after the victory
in the Battle of Ayacucho. His troops,
poorly dressed but with the honor
and satisfaction produced by triumph,
marched past its streets receiving
peoples applause and a rain of flowers
to reward the ones who expose their
own lives to defend the highest ideals.
Most of our regional history has not
been searched nor written yet, but
Regional History is gaining more and
more importance in the contemporary
world. Surely, dates and names of places
have their importance in the sense they
enclose the whole idea of time and
space; however, knowing where and
when things took place is not enough
because history is more than that. Acts
are carried out by people and people
form communities. Each community
has a specific way to act depending on
the circumstances of the events. In this
way, it wouldnt be enough knowing
when and where things happened,
but it is also necessary to know who
made things happen and how they
happened. Every community has printed
its character and personality in our
History, and people from the Region of
Tolima are constantly known for their
faithfulness to the principles and values
related to their autonomy, dignity, liberty,
and personal independence, because if
these people have printed in history their
own marks, their community has printed
in them the characteristics of their brave
spirit with a kind of ink that cannot be
erased.

El Tolima huele a su pasado
precolombino; sus cuevas y yacimientos
arqueolgicos preservan el aroma de las
antiguas culturas que se establecieron
en sus montaas. Huele al periodo de
la conquista en sus construcciones
urbanas ms antiguas que todava
parecen contener los efluvios de la
sangre de miles de indgenas aplastados
y sacrificados en nombre de la corona
espaola. Huele al periodo republicano
en los restos de ste que an persisten
en algunas calles antiguas donde los
fantasmas de los generales Jos Hilario
Lpez y Toms Cipriano de Mosquera
continan luchando por el estado
soberano. Irradia, en su bsqueda de
modernizacin, el aroma del siglo XX,
compuesto por los combustibles de los
automviles, por las maquinarias de la
construccin y los afanes de las oficinas
burocrticas. El Tolima huele a su
propia historia pero tambin a todos sus
anhelos; el olor del progreso.
Esta tierra comparte los olores de
otras regiones del pas. La plaza
de mercado es una experiencia
riqusima para el sentido del olfato: el
pescado fresco, los panecillos recin
horneados, las frutas y las verduras,
el humor de vendedores y coteros,
el smog producido por los camiones
que descargan sus mercancas en
las bodegas. La plaza pblica, esa
que es custodiada por Bolvar y las
edificaciones gubernamentales y
religiosas, tambin hace su contribucin
a la paleta de olores del departamento;
en los das laborales huele a adoqun,
bronce y mrmol, a csped y al agua
cristalina de la fuente, a alcalda y
a viejos papeles de diligencias no
concluidas, a las mquinas de escribir
de los tramitadores; y el domingo huele
a incienso de iglesia, a algodn de
azcar, a la boca dulce de los nios, al
helio de los globos, a palomitas de maz,
a helado de carrito musical, huele a esa
pequea feria que se instala cada da del
Seor en aquel espacio considerado el
epicentro de la poblacin.

El Tolima se reconoce en lo particular de

sus olores; el aroma fresco y glacial de
su nevado que desciende por el can
del ro Combeima, el olor del yarumo
y el cuero de sus instrumentos y a la
lana de sus ponchos. En conclusin,

Tolima smells of its past before the
time of the colony; its caves and
archeological sites preserve the scent
of ancient cultures that inhabit its
mountains. It smells of conquest times
inside its oldest urban buildings which
seem to hold inside their walls the blood
of many indigenous sacrificed in name
of the Spanish crown. Tolima smells
of Republican Times on their streets
where the ghost of Jose Hilario Lpez
and Toms Cipriano de Mosquera are
still fighting for a sovereign state. Trying
to reach modernity, Tolima smells of
twentieth century, constituted by fuel,
building machinery, and rush inside
bureaucratic offices. Tolima smells of
its own history, but it also smells to its
hopes, the smell of progress.
This land shares smells with other
regions of this country. Marketplaces
are a delicious experience for the sense
of smell: fresh fish, just-made bread,
fruits and vegetables, the humor of
stallholders and coteros, of the smog
produced by the trucks that unload the
goods inside the warehouses. The public
plaza, which is watched by Bolvar
and the governmental and religious
edifications, contributes to the variety of
smells of the department: on workdays
it smells of paving stone, bronze, and
marble, grass and crystal clear waters,
mayors office and missing old papers,
typing machines of middlemen; on
Sunday, it smells of incense of the
church and cotton candy, the sweet lips
of little children, helium inside balloons,
popcorn, some ice cream from the
musical car; it smells of that small fair
installed each Lord Day in what it is
considered the center of the town.

Tolima is acknowledged in the

particularity of its smells; the fresh
scent of its snow peak that declines till
the canyon of the Ro Combeima, the
smell of yarumo tree, the leather of its
instruments, and the smell of wool of
its ponchos. As a conclusion, historical,
social, and cultural richness of this land
are evident through its smells.

Desde 1536, las festividades
sanjuaneras se conmemoran en algunos
lugares de Espaa.
La llegada del solsticio de junio
era celebrada por los indgenas del
Tolima Grande con gran alegra. Eran
adoradores del dios sol. Para ellos,
este acontecimiento era como una
bendicin de los dioses. Los espaoles
consideraron este acto aborigen como
un culto de idolatra y lo sustituyeron
por la fiesta de San Juan Bautista.
En Natagaima, los indios metieron
un dolo pagano dentro de la imagen
del santo. De esta manera siguieron
rindiendo culto a sus dioses tutelares.

En el Tolima Grande, la celebracin del
San Juan es muy bulliciosa. Es la ms
importante del ao, junto con la fiesta
del apstol Pedro. Nicanor Velsquez
Ortiz, Blanca lvarez, Cesreo Rocha
Castilla y otros han descrito con lujo de
detalles estas fiestas. El campesino, el
ganadero, el hombre de negocios, el
profesional se unen en esta poca para
olvidar las preocupaciones de la vida y
rendir culto a las tradiciones, a la alegra.
El llano, la montaa, los grandes
y pequeos pueblos son testigos
de la ejecucin de nuestros ritmos
tradicionales. Se entrelazan las coplas,
llenas de picardas, escritas con
singular maestra. Complementan este
maravilloso espectculo el toreo, las
comidas tpicas y la despescuezada del
gallo.
Estas fiestas del Tolima Grande nos
llevan a reflexionar que nuestros
vestidos tradicionales, nuestras melodas
autctonas, nuestras costumbres deben
ser divulgadas.
Las fiestas sanjuaneras se
conmemoraban en Ibagu desde antes
de 1878. Las mujeres usaban telas
vistosas y paolones de vivos colores.
Tambin utilizaban sombreros de
paja. Los hombres vestan con ruanas
blancas, porque el clima era muy fro en
Ibagu. En 1886, el Conde francs De
Gabriac llam a Ibagu Ciudad Musical.
Dijo que los ibaguereos tocaban
instrumentos, entonaban canciones y
bailaban con gran maestra.
Las fiestas del San Juan y del San Pedro
comenzaron a tener una trascendental
importancia en la dcada de 1930. Todo
el pueblo participaba en el recibimiento
de San Juan, en el puente del Am,
sobre el ro Combeima. Entraban a
la ciudad con San Juan alzado en
hombros. Las corridas de toros tenan
por escenario principal la plaza Diego
Fallon, localizada en el actual parque
Lpez de Galarza; los espectculos
pblicos tenan su sede en la plaza
de Santa Librada y en la plazuela de
Boyac. El ciudadano comn disfrutaba
de varios regocijos populares, como
matachines, bailes, verbenas, varas de
premios, comidas tpicas, cabalgatas
de los jinetes que se hacan llamar
Llaneros del Tolima. Los programas que
indicaban estas celebraciones hacan
alusiones a las coplas tolimenses, a sus
mitos y tradiciones ms importantes.
Se beban el famoso aguardiente
tridestilado y los vinos extranjeros.
En 1959, se celebr el primer Festival
Folclrico Colombiano. Se inici una
nueva etapa en las fiestas de la ciudad,
dando a conocer nuestro departamento
y la tradicin musical ibaguerea en los
mbitos nacional e internacional.

Tolima (Tolima Grande) have an
appointment with the myths, legends,
folkloric music, and idiosyncrasy. The
festivities of San Juan are celebrated in
some places of Spain since 1536.
The summer solstice was celebrated
by the indigenous people from Large
Tolima with much joy. They worshipped
the god of the sun. For them, solstice
was a blessing from the gods. Spanish
people considered this indigenous act
as idolatry, and they substituted it with
the festivity of Saint John the Baptist (in
Spanish San Juan, El Bautista).
In Natagaima, the indigenous people
inserted a pagan idol inside the image
of the saint. In this way, they could
continue worshipping their original
gods. After being discovered by the
religious authorities, the idol was
burnt, and the sacrilegious ones were
whipped in public. The festivities of
San Juan in Natagaima were founded
before 1756.

The feasts of San Juan were celebrated
in Ibague before 1878. Women wore
colorful dresses, kerchiefs, and, also,
straw hats. Men wore white ruanas
because the weather was really cold.
In 1886, the French Count De Gabriac
called Ibague The Musical City. He
said that people from Ibague played
instruments, sang, and danced skillfully.
The feasts of San Juan and San Pedro in
Ibague began to have a transcendental
importance in the decade of 1930.
All the people participated in the
reception of San Juan on Am bridge,
over Ro Cobeima. They entered the
city carrying the image of San Juan on
their shoulders. Bullfights were carried
out in the principal Plaza Diego Fallon
where it is nowadays the Parque Lopez
de Galarza. Public spectacles took
place in Plaza Santa Librada and Plaza
Boyaca; nowadays, there is a school
under the same name of the square
in that place. Common people could
enjoy many popular entertainments
such as matachines (carnival, colorful
characters), dances, night festivals,
prizes, typical food, rooster pull, and
cavalcades with riders who called
themselves as Llaneros del Tolima
(Tolima rangers). All the events in theses
feasts were related to the rhyming
couplets, the myths, and their most
important traditions. People drank
aguardiente tridestilado and foreign
wines. In 1959, the First Folkloric
Festival was celebrated and, with it,
a new age for these festivities began
because the tradition and music from
Ibague started to be known in Colombia
and abroad.

hitos constituyen puntos de unin del
departamento: ubicado al noroccidente,

La topografa tolimense es variada y

Hacia mediados del siglo XIX, se
present un nuevo movimiento
colonizador de aventureros migrantes

En 1861 fue creado el Estado Soberano
del Tolima, que hizo parte de los
Estados Unidos de Colombia. En 1905,
por medio de un decreto, se separ
la provincia de Neiva actualmente
Departamento del Huila y se conform
la divisin territorial definitiva que
conserva en la actualidad.
El departamento tiene una economa
basada en tres pilares: agrcola,
ganadero y minero. Desde los aos
setenta del siglo XX se despert una
fiebre por la bsqueda de oro, que se
fij en la cordillera central del Tolima,
desde Herveo hasta Ibagu. La fiebre
del oro contagi a grandes compaas
mineras que en la actualidad realizan
exploraciones de gran envergadura.
Compaas que adems de buscar
riquezas minerales han credo en
la gente de estas tierras y por ello
buscan generar un impacto positivo
en la economa del departamento y el
bienestar a cada uno de los municipios
en donde estn ubicadas, como La
Colosa, en Cajamarca, operada por la
Multinacional Anglogold Ashanti.
Arquitectura variada
La arquitectura tolimense es tan variada
como su topografa, no slo por las
influencias indgena y espaola, sino
por diversas razones que se atribuyen a
fenmenos naturales.
Es el caso del puerto de Honda, que
el 16 de junio de 1805 sufri los
estragos de un terremoto que destruy
construcciones coloniales y abri la
posibilidad para el desarrollo de una
nueva arquitectura.

El 13 de noviembre de 1985, la erupcin

del volcn nevado del Ruiz ocasion
una avalancha de lodo que sepult la
Ciudad Blanca, Armero, lo que ocasion
la muerte a ms de 20 mil personas y la
migracin de los sobrevivientes a otras
ciudades del departamento, como la
capital, Ibagu.

 In the Andean midsection of the
Colombian western region, one can find
14,640 square miles that comprise the
department of Tolima. Two landmarks
that outline strategic union points in the
department are: the Nevado del Tolima,
snow peak located at the north western
area, and the second strategic union
point, the Magdalena river on the east.
The close relationship with the
immediate environment takes us back
to the times before the colony, when
the native populations occupied the
Madre Tierra, term used in denotation
to nature, based on the respect they still
hold for the land. They were goldsmiths
who used the technique of the lost
wax, cera perdida, for the elaboration
of pectoral designs with humanly
schematic shapes; the jewels also
included earrings, beaded necklaces of
similar shapes, and animal shapes as
well.
When the Spaniards crossed the region
in the search for El Dorado, the most
in situ
valuable symbolic treasure for the
native cultures, they made use of the
communication system of the local
indigenous groups such as roads, paths,
and rivers; all to conquer the domain
over the native groups, the inhabitants
of the region. One of their strategies was
the instauration of the Pueblos de Indios
in a distribution which was a replica of
the original European towns.
In the middle of the nineteenth century,
a new movement of colonization came
about thanks to the migrating people
from Antioquia, who oriented the social
economical development towards the
exploration of the mining potential and
towards coffee plantations.
In 1861 the Estado Soberano del Tolima,
Sovereign State of Tolima, was founded;
this Sovereign State was a part of
Estados Unidos de Colombia. In 1905,
by means of decree, the province of
Neiva was separated from the political
arrangement at the time- currently the
department of Huila- thus marking the
current political division that the terrain
holds.
Big mining companies have major
exploration sites currently running in the
region. These companies, aside from
seeking mineral riches, have chosen
to believe in the people of these lands,
thus, determining that the impact of
the exploration sites is a positive one
upon the economy of the department,
and the wellbeing of each one of the
municipalities where they are situated;
such is the case of the gold mine of La
Colosa, located in the municipality of
Cajamarca, run by AngloGold Ashanti.
Varied Architecture
The architecture of Tolima is as varied
as its topography is, not only due to
the influence of the Spaniards and the
indigenous groups, but by very many
different reasons that attributed to
natural phenomena.
Such is the case of the port of Honda,
which on the 16th day of June, 1805,
suffered the ravages of an earthquake
that destroyed constructions of the time
of the colony, and opened the possibility
for the development of a new type of
architecture.

On November 13th, 1985, the eruption

of the volcano by the name of Nevado
del Ruz caused an avalanche that buried
Armero, the city known as La ciudad
blanca, White City, happening that
claimed the death of twenty thousand
people, and the migration of the
survivors to the tragedy who moved on
to other cities of the same department,
like the capital of Ibagu.

This city combines constructions

from the time of the colony, classic
structures, neoclassic tendencies,
republican influence, and modern
currents of architecture, thus leading to
new-fangled urban restoring programs
as a means of renovation for the city in
the hopes to preserve the memory, the
history, and the cultural patrimony of the
