iei^s&^acin, la doble h a c h a y mesas p a r a ofrendas de
. dstintas^ formas. De estas ltimas, en varios"fegares de
C r e t a y tambin en Micenas se h a e e o n t r a d o m r i a pare-
cida a u n a pequea mesa redonda c o n tres^^ats: muy
cortas y u n a depresin en el centro. Eri Micenas se des-
cubri h a c e poco u b a s e escalonada del m i s m o tipo que
las que suelen sostener la doble hachar. E s t o r h a a z g o s son
importantes p o r q u e demuestran que el cidto se celebraba
en Micenas de la misma m a n e r a que en la C r e m minoica.
L o s cuernos de consagracin y la doble h a c h a apa^
recen frecuentemente en representaciones de escenas per-
tenecientes al culto. L o p r i m e r o consiste en dos prolon-
gaciones en f o r m a d cuerno; undas-y apoi^das en u n a
base. Su'origen es desconocido. Se i o s h a c o t n j K r d o Con
l o s "cuernos del altar" en el culto semtico. Apafecen a
m e n u d o sobre los altares, pero c o m o utensilio indepen-
diente, Se supone q u e son u n a imitacin sinttica y con-
vencional del b u c r a n i o . E s indudable, p o r lo menos, que
los cuernos constituan el lugar de la consagracin: los
objetos sagrados estaban colocados entr ellos.
L a doble h a c h a es el smbolo d e la religin cretense;
es un smbolo tan caracterstico y omnipresente c o m o
la cruz -cristiana y la meda' luna musulmana.. Muchos
de los ejemplares hallados n o pueden h a b e r servido p a r a
fines prcticos sino solamente p a r a fines sacros:: dobles
hachas de fino bronce laminado, m u y adornadsij, y h a -
chas diminutas de diferentes materiales. A p a r e c e n con
m u c h a frecuencia en vasijas y gemas y tainbin trabadas
sobre las piedras de las paredes y pilares d palacio, de
Cnosos. P e r o n o todas las dobles hachas, c o m o t a m p o c o
todas las cruces, adquieren significado c o m o o b j e t o del

demostrar este h e c h o tiene i m p o r t a n c i a fundamental. L o s
temas pueden v a r i a r segn la naturaleza de la c u l t u r a y
agregarse otros con ei progreso de ella, p e r o a u n en los
cuentos de los pueblos m s altamente desarrollados existe
u n c o n j u n t o bsico, cuya peculiar naturaleza revela que
su origen se r e m o n t a a la infancia de la raza h u m a n a . E s
principalmente este rasgo el que resulta comn al m i t o
griego, al cuento p o p u l a r e u r o p e o y a los cuentos de po-
cas antiguas y de pueblos primitivos.
L l a m o a esos temas simplemente "temas de cuentos
populares", y tratar en lo posible de someterlos a u n
anlisis sistemtico p a r a dilucidar el papel que desempe-
a n en la mitologa griega; al mismo tiempo, intentar
p o n e r d e manifiesto c m o el rasgo caracterstico del es-
pritu griego, el racionalismo, provoc u n a seleccin, pu-
rificacin y reelaboracin 3 e los elementos demasiado fan-
tsticos del m a t e r i a l d e los cuentos populares; el m i t o
griego n a c i del cuento p o p u l a r en virtud de u n proceso
d e humanizacin.
Comienzo con los temas que, por lo menos en u n a
visin superficial, parecen ser los ms caractersticos de
los cuentos populares: se los podra llamar "temas de
aventuras". E l hroe del cuento pasa a m e n u d o p o r u n a
serie de combates y de pruebas que van desde la lucha
con monstruos de todo tipo hasta la limpieza de u n
sucio establo. E l tema de Augas aparece en cuentos po-
pulares modernos; de las luchas con monstruos, n o hace
Calta.hablar. L a mitologa griega abunda en bestias rea-
les y fabulosas: leones, toros, caballos, dragones, esfinges,

yariantes c<mtradictorias de los mitos.
Si los buscamos, podemos e n c o n t r a r en los mitos di
ferentes vestigios de u n a poca ms antigua, como, p o r
ejemplo, la costumbre de transferir la tierra entregando
simblicamente un terrn, costumbre conocida p o r la ley
r o m a n a y la escandinava ^. P e r o tal costumbre desapa
reci de la prctica sin dejar rastros. L o mismo o c u r r e
en m a y o r g r a d o con los ritos religiosos, c o m o el sacrificio
liumano, que a p a r e c e n r a r a m e n t e en el culto real p e r o
que constituyen un m o t i v o c o m n en el mito. L a cos
t u m b r e de purificar el ejrcito hacindolo m a r c h a r p o r
e n t r e los miembros ensangrentados de la vctima per
sisti en regiones atrasadas c o m o B e o c i a y M a c e d o n i a ;
p o r lo dems, el m i t o se apoder de ella if*.
Se h a afirmado que el c u e n t o p o p u l a r n o tiene re
lacin alguna con la m o r a l . E s o puede ser verdad actual
m e n t e con referencia al cuento popular que h a q u e d a d o
c o m o residuo de tiempos primitivos, pero n o o c u r r e lo
mismo con respecto al c u e n t o p o p u l a r en u n a e t a p a
de desarrollo viviente. L o s pueblos primitivos cuentan
historias acerca del origen de sus costumbres e institu
ciones, y de las penas en que i n c u r r e n los que n o las
c u m p l e n o las violan. Estos temas, que podramos l l a m a r
ticos siempre que n o se adjudique al t r m i n o n i n g n
sentido filosfico, estn ms estrechamente relacionados
q u e otros con las condiciones sociales. E n pueblos c o m o
el griego, que en sus orgenes tuvo u n sistema notable
m e n t e patriarcal, se c o n c e n t r a n n a t u r a l m e n t e alrededor

T r e n ^ n t r o del c u l t o o al m a r g e n de l, si es que se
t r a t a d e n n c u l t o c o n antiguas tradiciones L o s cultos
g c ^ o s m s recientes repiten con tediosa m o n o t o n a el
Domado "ritual olmpico": el sacrificio corriente con
procesin, himnos, danzas corales y b a n q u e t e sacrificial.
P e r o los campesinos son siempre conservadores; en la an-
tigua Grecia, como en la E u r o p a m o d e r n a , las costumbres
rsticas conservaron muchas reliquias de u n a etapa re-
ligiosa ya envejecida.
E n Grecia, la lluvia constituye u n don m u y precia-
do, y a m e n u d o es demasiado escasa; p o r eso, el arte de
p r o v o c a r la lluvia era i m p o r t a n t e . L a ciudad de C r a n n
dibuja e n sus monedas u n carro con u n nfora que se
u t i l a b a p a r a ese fin. Probablemente, la vasija se lle-
n a b a con a g u a y el carro se llevaba de a q u p a r a all
d e m o d o que el a g u a salpicara en todas direcciones. E n
el U c e o , el m o n t e de Zeus en A r c a d i a , exista u n pozo
l l a m a d o H a g n o . E n tiempo de sequa, el sacerdote de
Zeus se e n c a m i n a b a al pozo y agitaba el agua con u n a
r a m i t a . I n m e d i a t a m e n t e se observaba que del pozo u n a
niebla s u i ^ a , se c o n c e n t r a b a en forma de nube y llova
en t o d a A r c a d i a . E l rito constituye el ejemplo ms sen-
cillo posible d e la m a g i a pluvial corriente, p e r o lo ce-
lebra u n sacerdote de Zeus y est a c o m p a a d o por* u n
sacrificio; la religin se h a h e c h o cargo de l. C u a n d o
h a c e falta agua, los hombres se vuelven h a c i a Zeus, el
d i o s de la lluvia. ste vive en las cimas de las m o n t a -
as y a ese l u g a r c o n c u r r e n los hombres p a r a r o g a r p o r
hi lluvia, p o r ejemplo al Pelln, a Cos y a Ceos. L o s

T r i p t l e m o a difundir p o r el m u n d o la agricultura y
las bondades de la vida civilizada siempre expres, p a r a
ellos, la idea de esa posicin r e c t o r a en la civilizacin
sobre la cual tenan bien fundados derechos.
L o mismo ocurri en otros lugares. L a ciudad de
Patrs n a c i de la u n i n de tres lugares; Axoe, A n t e a y
Mesatis. E n el festival de Dioniso se paseaban imgenes
de Dioniso Areo, A n t e o y Mesatis hasta el templo de
Dioniso Esimnetes en la ciudad. Artemisa T r i c l a r i a , la
Artemisa de tres distritos campesinos, recibe su n o m b r e
de la unin de los mismos. Se dice que los del pueblo
de Ccico, cuando obligaron con las armas a los habi-
tantes de Proconeso a unirse a ellos, se llevaron u n a ima-
gen de la M a d r e Dindimena. E l proceso se repiti en el
a o 3 7 0 , en que cierto n m e r o de pequeas ciudades
arcadias se uni en la "Gran Ciudad", Megalpolis. Se
estableci all u n santuario dedicado a Zeus L i c e o que,
c o m o la cima del m o n t e h o m n i m o , no deba ser holla-
do por el pie h u m a n o . U n a estatua de bronce de A p o l o
E p i c u r i o fue llevada a la ciudad desde su famoso templo
de Basas, cerca de Figalia. E n la vecindad se adoraba a
P a n Sinoco, que tambin fue trasladado a Megalpolis.
A P a n Escolitas se lo traslad desde un cerro de ese
n o m b r e . Resulta perfectamente claro en estos ejemplos
de qu m a n e r a se trataba de concentrar y confirmar la
formacin de u n estado p o r medio de la concentra-
cin de los cultos. E n la poca en que se fund Mega-
lpolis, el recurso haba perdido g r a n p a r t e de su anti-
guo poder, pero cumpli m u y bien su funcin en la con-
solidacin del tica. N o podemos rehusar nuestra admira-
cin al desconocido estadista que, con ayuda del culto,
adquiri p a r a Atenas u n territorio m a y o r que el que

nisias, sabemos de pensonas portadoras de cestas q u e
contenan indudablemente lo q u e e r a menester p a r a el
sacrificio: p a n , vino, agua y vasijas p a r a la. comida
sacrificial. T o d o lo que haca falta p a r a e l gran ban-
quete del sacrificio se inclua, entonces, en lai^ proce-
sin, j u n t o c o n los animales q u e oficiaran d e vctimaS
tambin p a n , a g u a y vino, y n o slo tiles y vasifas:^.
Ciertas fiestas se celebraban en gran escala, y a q u e - e l ,
estado obsequiaba a los ciudadanos, e indudablemente
las: sumas que se gastaban n o e r a n pequeas. E n pocas
posteriores, el estado venda las pieles d e los animales
sacirifcados para hacerse de u n poco de dinero; poseemos
cierto n m e r o d e informes sobre l a s ganancias as ob-
tenidas; en el a o 334-3 sumaron 5 . 5 4 9 dracmas. E n
ese tiempo, u n buey costaba sin duda cerca de doscien-
tas dracmas: no podemos sabef lo q u e vala la piel, pero
de cualquier m a n e r a las cifras son elocuentes: L a ' d i s t r i -

tistas se d i e r o n cuenta de la falta de vuelo religioso, n o
encontraron n a d a mejor que remplazar la calma, l a dig
nidad interior, con el efecto teatral. Lecares inici el
proceso, si es que el Apolo de Belvedere y su pareja, la
Artemisa de Versalles, se le adjudican correctamente; y
los escultores de la poca helenstica lo continuaron, con
mtodos a n m s audaces. E l Zeus de Otricoli puede
valer c o m o ejemplo p a r a todo el resto.
P e r o n o fue solamente la creciente indiferencia reli
giosa lo que m u t i l el poder de resistencia de la antigua
religin: la impotencia del estado contribuy al proceso.
E n p r i m e r lugar, G r e c i a se despedaz en u n a guerra en la
que todos los estados lucharon contra su vecino, p a r a caer
luego bajo el yugo extranjero. Despus de sus ltimas con
vulsiones en la g u e r r a de Cremnidas, Atenas perdi t o d o
vestigio de independencia poltica, y p r o n t o su comercio y
su industria tambin murieron. E l estado ya n o tena n a d a
que ofrecer a sus ciudadanos, y stos, p o r su parte, carecan
de razones p a r a a b o g a r p o r la causa de los dioses estatales.
C o n la declinacin del poder poltico, tambin decay la
religin asociada al estado.
Se permiti que se prosiguieran pacficamente los
esfuerzos filosficos p o r explicar el origen d e la religin
y d e los dioses. De ah en adelante, tienen m a y o r inters
p a r a la ciencia d e la religin que p a r a su historia. Y a
hemos visto q u e prcticamente todas las tendencias que
concurrieron a d a r forma a la m o d e r n a ciencia de la re
ligin aparecieron ya en la antigedad, pero p a r a n o
pecar p o r defecto hay que decir adems que tampoco
falt la escuela histrica, que deriva las ideas acerca de
los dioses de u n pas en particular. E s t u v o representada,
p o r ejemplo, p o r H e r d o t o , que o p i n a que las deidades

E l c u l t o a n t i g u o sobrevivi p o r la fuerza d e la
tradicin, p e r o c o m o u n caparazn vaco. U n a s veces bus-
c su salvacin a d o p t a n d o formas e ideas nuevas; otras,
asocindose con dioses extranjeros. E x i s t e cierto n m e -
r o de ejemplos de este caso, a los que se h a prestado
relativamente p o c a atencin. L a majestuosidad del cui-
to se acrecent p o r u n a m e j o r iluminacin ^, q u e result
posible al remplazar las antiguas a n t o r c h a s con m u c h a s
lmparas. L a investigacin arqueolgica h a mostrado q u e
las lmparas se utilizaron p o r p r i m e r a vez en e l - c u l t o
p o c o antes del final de perodo helenstico, y que pos-
teriormente se hicieron cada vez ms comunes; en los
ltimos tiempos clsicos, se encuentran entre los instru-
mentos ms usuales del culto. R e s u l t a significativo qlie
en los misterios dionisacos el despertar del dios estu-
viera a c o m p a a d o p o r las notas del r g a n o hidrulico ^.
L a s nuevas teoras a c e r c a del especial carcter divino d e
los cuerpos celestes se abrieron c a m i n o en los antiguos
festivales. E l antiguo festival agrario de las Esciroforas
se adjudic a Helios y a las Horas; estas divinidades estn
totalmente de a c u e r d o con la d o c t r i n a estoica. E l cm-
p u t o p o r medio d e las estrellas y de las estaciones, q u e
h a s t a entonces slo haba sido u n a estimacin profana
del tiempo, ingres entonces en el uso sagrado. CUdemo
llama ya al antiguo festival de las Proerosias, las P r o -
arcturias, es decir, el festival que tiene lugar antes de la
aparicin de A r t u r o . E n Olimpia, las llamadas Bsilas
ofrecan u n sacrificio sobre la C o l i n a de Cronos en el
m o m e n t o del equinoccio de primavera, y sta es u n a
