No soy profesor de Ingls, ni corrector oficial de
Selectividad. S soy norteamericano, nativo en Ingls, y
algo s de redaccin. Creo que ests en muy buenas

Despus de leer atentamente los textos y las cuestiones siguientes, el alumno deber escoger
una de las dos opciones propuestas y responder en INGLS a las cuestiones de la opcin
elegida.
CALIFICACIN: Las cuestiones 1, 2 y 4 se valorarn sobre 2 puntos cada una, la
pregunta 3 sobre 1 punto y la pregunta 5 sobre 3 puntos.
TIEMPO: 90 minutos.

a) Most petroleum supply goes to producing plastics and medicines.

b) If fuel suddenly disappeared, our daily life would be affected but social order would
remain intact.

How Would We Live in a World Without Oil?

2.- In your own words and based on the ideas in the text, answer the following questions. Do
not copy from the text.

What would happen if our oil supply were shut off in a day? First, there is
transportation. With the overwhelming majority of the oil we produce
devoted to powering our vehicles, the impact on getting around would be
most dramatic. Price-speculation would begin right away, and long lines
would form at gas stations. Soon, we would all be looking for an electric car
or converting our vehicles to run on natural gas. But it would not be long
before natural gas supplies were also driven to extinction.

Fuel shortage is not the only problem our enslavement to black gold would
cause. We also need to keep the lights on and blackouts would soon begin. It
gets much worse still, of course, because a world without oil would quickly
become a world without all of the products made from petroleum that we
have come to know, love and depend upon. The list of essentials that we
would soon be doing without is prodigious: medicines, paints, utensils and
equipment, virtually all plastics, etc.
Eating would get tougher, too. If no one can truck fresh vegetables from
across the country, we might be inclined to go back to basics and grow our
own food. Local farmers would become a necessity, not just people who sell
us honey at the street fair. It is an interesting thought experiment to picture
such a world. Though the scenario is unreal, of course, taken to its logical
conclusion, it encompasses so much more. A complete extinction of oil
would lead to a rapid breakdown of society, desperation, lawlessness, wars
and untold suffering.

Transport and mobility are a serious problem in many large cities. There is too much traffic. This is because
too many people use their car instead of public transportation. Local authorities can improve the situation
by getting more people to use public transportation.
To achieve this, they should do two things. First, they should make public transportation more attractive by
reducing prices, and increasing the frequency of buses and subways. Second, they should make it more
difficult to use your car in the city. I recommend increasing the price of public parking. I also think they
should prohibit private vehicles in the city center. (104 words)

Estrategia para la redaccin:

En la redaccin nos estn pidiendo nuestra opinin sobre lo que se debera hacer para resolver un
problema. Que nos pidan nuestra opinin nos da muchsima libertad al escribir, porque podemos decir
prcticamente lo que queramos, siempre que tenga cierta lgica lo que decimos. Vers abajo que digo que
la causa del problema de movilidad en las ciudades es que hay demasiado trfico. De dnde saqu eso?
Me lo invent. Es mi opinin. Pero tiene lgica, no?
Recuerda: no tienen que valorar la calidad de la solucin que propones, sino la calidad del ingls que usas
para expresar la solucin.
Como nos piden una solucin para un problema, la estructura bsica de la respuesta que decid usar es:
Hay un problema que consisten en...
Opino que la causa es.
Opino que la solucin a alto nivel es...
Para implantar la solucin hara lo siguiente: iniciativa 1, iniciativa 2
Sencillo, no? Como vers, 100 150 palabras no dan para mucho, as que no hace falta complicarnos
mucho con nuestra respuesta. Recomiendo organizar tu respuesta en 2 prrafos, mximo 3. Si escribes
ms prrafos sern muy cortitos, o terminars escribiendo ms de 150 palabras.
Yo me hice este esquema de 2 prrafos:

Prrafo 1: Resumir el problema y la solucin propuesta a alto nivel

Dnde est el problema: Transporte y movilidad en grandes ciudades.
En qu consiste: Hay demasiado trfico
Causa: Demasiada gente usa su coche en vez del transporte pblico
Estrategia/Qu hacer: Conseguir que ms gente opte por el transporte pblico
Prrafo 2: Iniciativas especficas que implantara para lograr la solucin propuesta.
Iniciativa 1: Hacer ms atractivo el transporte pblico
Ejemplo 1: Reducir los precios del transporte pblico
Ejemplo 2: Aumentar la frecuencia de autobuses y metro
Iniciativa 2: Hacer menos atractivo usar tu coche en la ciudad
Ejemplo 1: Aumentar el precio de los aparcamientos pblicos
Ejemplo 2: Prohibir los coches particulares en el centro

Como puedes ver en la redaccin en Ingls, aprovech prcticamente todas las palabras del enunciado,
en algunos casos incluso dos veces. Si analizas la redaccin hay palabras que se repiten. De hecho slo
hay 66 palabras nicas, la mitad de ellas palabras muy bsicas de 1 a 5 letras (I, they, this, think, etc.).

Vocabulario:
Del texto que te dan a leer, destacara las siguientes palabras como quizs las ms raras.
Oil - En ingls, oil puede significar aceite pero tambin, como en este artculo, se usa como alternativa a
la palabra petroleum o petrleo.
Shut off - Esta frase puede usarse como verbo o adjetivo. Como verbo significa apagar o cortar, en el
sentido de apagar la luz o un aparato, o cortar el flujo, trnsito o suministro de algo. Ejemplos de ese uso:
Shut off the lights quiere decir Apaga las luces. Our escape route was cut off quiere decir que nuestra
ruta de escape fue cortada. Como adjetivo significa apagado o cortado.
Overwhelming - Abrumadora.
Devoted - Comprometido a.
Shortage - Escasez. Una frase relacionada es To be short o To be short of. Se usan para indicar la
cantidad de algo que te falta para llegar al total. Im 5 dollars short quiere decir que Me faltan 5 dlares.
My jump was 2 centimeters short of the record quiere decir que Mi salto no alcanz el rcord por 2
centmetros.
Blackout - Apagn
To be inclined to - Estar ms predispuesto a
Thought experiment - Experimento mental
Untold - Puede significar no contado, como en la frase The untold truth (la verdad no contada). En este
texto sin embargo quiere decir demasiado para contar o medir.
