In this project, we intend to show the comic, as a tool very useful to capture the student's attention
and help to assimilate the lesson in the classroom of English. Through this teaching resource, we
want to help strengthen speaking skills in English foreign language.
Whichever method you follow, it is important to consider the applications that have cartoons in the
classroom for teaching English. Although its use is not widespread, it is an interesting alternative to
consider as it offers many possibilities to the student for the inclusion of content and practice
engaging and fun for students, sometimes only limited by your own creativity.
In this work, we want to capture some general ideas about the comic. From a brief explanation of
its history through a definition, characteristics, parts ... etc., to reach some practical exercises on
the comic that reinforce classroom-learning students.
With this, the application of comics as a teaching resource is justified to combine the images with
other written resources, which are of great importance in the perceptual, evaluative and cognitive
world of children and youth.
INTRODUCTION
The origin of the comic is linked to economic, social and cultural characteristics of the society in
which it originates.
The comic is the result of centuries of experimentation. As a form of representation must be
associated with mass culture. The comic is therefore an industrial product, regardless of its
aesthetic or semiotic value.
The aesthetics of illustration, political humor and satirical journalism are genres to keep in mind
when considering the influences on the origin of comics. In Europe they add to these elements from
tradition, on the one hand, and doggerel and, secondly, the rise of serial novels.
"As a result of the birth of comic adventures from literary genres in principle says C. Garcia, writer
specialization her appreciation of the texts in history, as in the cinema definitely arises and the
adoption of sound, causes identical narrative kicks. In the film returns to the theatricality of the
staging, in comics, illustration with the captions ".
At present, coexist traditional comics and those who try to impose new aesthetic approaches.
"Intimately linked to social processes evolution says J. Acevedo- Cartoon take depends on how
authors and publishers, and the relationship established with readers, defining relationship, cartoon
ultimate meaning."
The comic emerges as instrument to entertainment and fun, as an almost exclusive distractive
function. But social needs on the one hand, and other needs of social prestige, requires a
progressive branch to the instruction field.
Here are some definitions for the comic or cartoon according to different sources over time.
"A comic is a narrative sequence formed by bullets or frames within which can integrate linguistic
texts or some phonetic signs representing expressions (Boom, crash, bang, etc.)" by M. V.
Manacorda Rosetti.
"It is a narrative form whose structure consists not only of a system but two: language and image"
by Elisabeth K. Baur.
"Sequence cartoons or graphics that tell a story through images and text that appears locked in a
balloon or snack" according to the dictionary.
Introduccin
ocasiona idnticos retrocesos narrativos.
(Boom, crash, bang, etc.)" segn M.V.
imagen" segn Elisabeth K. Baur.

Solution
Given the presence of these two factors (youth and lack of motivation) classes have to do
everything possible to catch the attention of students in class. To do this you have to adopt a
number of strategies that can be followed in class, some to note are:
Using a methodology as varied as possible and all kinds of materials such as found in traditional
classrooms, presenting pictures, illustrations by which easily capture students with visual aid. And
one of the materials that could implement and adapt to this dynamic visual appeal is the comic.
The activities that can be done with this kind of comics are innumerable. Most of them have stories
where humor plays an important role. For this reason, these activities tend to be very attractive to
9
students because the fun is assured. This material also can be extended to a large number of
situations.
Both comics as the comic can be used from elementary to advanced not only as a linguistic
practice but also as discussion material on a particular topic. Because of this comic it is called a
socio affective strategy, whereby the usefulness of this phase is given by the opportunity of
students to activate their prior knowledge. One of the goals of it is to awaken interest, encourage
motivation and thus avoid the appearance of negative feelings that block the student. In this case,
as we have stated repeatedly, using the comic as an educational resource, it is a material
particularly suitable as a starting point for the development of this strategy.
10

Autora: Mara Dolores Lpez Garca
