hacer revestimientos de hormign in situ.

The article ends with two further chapters. The first includes a
summary of the references of the most relevant VSMs projects
and the second follows developments that Herrenknecht has
made on prototype designs to meet future potential market
sectors or new applications such as: VSM for dry excavation,
VSM 16.000 for inner diameters of 16,0 m; VSM-D for up to 150
m deep shafts, and VSM-B for pipe-jacking launching shafts.

1. Introduction
The Vertical Shaftsinking Machine (VSM) consists of two main
components, the excavation unit and the lowering unit. The excavation
unit systematically cuts and excavates the soil. and consists of a
cutting drum attached to a telescopic boom that allows excavation
under the cutting edge and if required can also perform an overcut.
If necessary the VSM can excavate through short sections of
unexpected hard rock. Although this is possible for the VSM,
higher cutter consumption should be considered depending on
the compressive strength and abrasivity.
The excavation process is carried out below the ground water level
and is fully remote-controlled from the surface. No ground water
lowering is necessary.
A slurry discharge system removes the excavated soil and a
submerged slurry pump is located directly on the cutter drum
casing. It transports the water and soil mixture through a slurry
line to a separation plant on the surface. A centrifuge unit can be
added to the separation plant to remove fine particles if necessary.
This improves the transport of the excavated soil and ensures clean
shaft water which can be more easily disposed of when emptying
the completed shaft.
The lowering unit stabilizes the entire shaft construction against
uncontrolled sinking by holding the total shaft weight with steel
strands and hydraulic jacks. When one excavation cycle under the
cutting edge of the shaft is completed, the complete lining can be
lowered uniformly and precisely. Picture 1 shows an overview of
the VSM equipment and its respective function during shaft sinking.
The whole operation takes place from the surface and is controlled
by the operator from the control container. All machine functions
Fig. 1. Vista general de las funciones de una VSM/Overview and explanation of VSM equipment
are guided remotely without the necessity to view the shaft bottom
or the machine.
The shaft lining is installed at the surface and is in most cases made
up with precast concrete segments. In general these are comparable
to tunnel linings, however bolts and connectors can be handled
from outside the shaft.
Alternatively, in-situ concrete casting of the shaft walls can also be
implemened. In this case the slower progress of shaft construction
works is compensated to some extent by having a continuous
structure without joints and by the possibility of integrating entire
entry and exit structures for Microtunnelling activities in the walls
of the shaft.

2. Informacin sobre la obra
2.1. Trabajos de preparacin del sitio
2.1.1. Excavacin previa

2.1.1. Pre-Excavation
The first step in a VSM shaft sinking project is always job site
preparation with pre-excavation for the ring foundation and start
section.
As previously described the VSM equipment consists of two main
machine components which are the lowering unit and the shaft
excavation machine. The lowering unit consists of three or more
strand jacks which are connected via steel cable through the jacks
with the cutting edge of the shaft. The lowering unit holds the
complete shaft weight and the weight of the VSM and therefore a ring
foundation is needed to handle the complete weight of the machine
and to help guide it into the ground. Therefore, no uncontrolled
sinking of the shaft is possible because the shaft is controlled by
the lowering unit at all the times.
A typical ring foundation is approximately 2m deep and goes about
2.5m around the outer diameter of the shaft. In order to install
the concrete ring foundation first a pre-excavation pit is needed .
Furthermore, steel plates or a small concrete slab are installed where
the steel cutting edge of the shaft is installed in a later to support
the start section of the shaft.
The concept of a re-usable steel foundation will be introduced
later in this paper. It is divided in segments for easy transport
and can be used several times on different shafts with the same
diameter. By employing a re-usable steel foundation the concrete
ring foundation can be reduced to a concrete slab with a thickness
of about 500mm.
2.1.2. Installation of Cutting Edge
When pre-excavation is completed the cutting edge and the first
segment rings can be installed on the steel support plates or thin
concrete slab under the cutting edge in the pre-excavation pit. Two
different cutting edge designs have been used on previous VSM
projects. For shafts with an internal diameter of 6000mm or smaller
a separate steel cutting edge is recommended with a steeper angle.
However, for bigger shafts it is possible to have a less steep angle
of the cutting edge and to cast a small steel edge into the first
ring of concrete segments. Picture 2 shows the general design of
the cutting edge with a steel ring casted in the first segment ring.
The cutting edge is welded onto this steel ring. Since the VSM is
able to excavate an overcut the cutting edge itself only provides a
small overcut of approx. 30mm. Moreover, there is a rubber seal
implemented to aid the lubrication of the annulus by preventing
lubricant loss to the slurry circuit. This will be explained in more
detail later.
No

After the cutting edge is in place the start section consisting of the
first 5 segment rings can be installed and connected.
Picture 3 shows an illustration of the installed cutting edge with two
segment rings installed on the start section.
2.1.3. Cutting Edge, Start Section and Attachment Plates
The first 5 segment rings make up the so called start section, which
has higher reinforcement in order to take the loads and forces of the
machine and excavation process. However, since the VSM employs
a sequential partial face excavation technique there is no torque led
into the shaft body.
Fig. 5.
segment rings and machine attachment
When the start section is ready the steel plates for the machine
attachment can be installed. Since it is crucial to ensure the correct
measurements at this stage, Herrenknecht provides an installation
dummy with the VSM in order to help guide the installation and
welding of the attachment plates to the shaft wall. The lining
segments themselves have smaller cast in steel plates for welding
of the machine attachment plates.
2.1.4. Reinforcement and Concreting of the Ring Foundation
When the start section is in place the concrete ring can be installed.
The first rings of the start section of the shaft work as a shutter
for casting the concrete foundation. Steel reinforcements as well
as connection bolts for various VSM parts such as lowering units,
recovery winches and energy winch tower are integrated in the
foundation structure.
As described previously a re-usable steel ring foundation can be
installed on top of a minimized concrete foundation. By using the
re-usable steel ring foundation the concrete foundation can be
dimensioned much smaller saving the cost of the lost concrete.
The cost of the steel foundation can depreciated over a big number
of shafts.
The strand jacks, recovery winches and energy line winch is installed
on top of the steel foundation and fixed by screw connections.
The complete job site preparation as described under III.1 from
experience takes approximately 3-4 weeks and can be done before
the VSM machine arrives on site.
Picture 5 shows a completely installed start section.
2.2. Assembly and Installation of the VSM
2.2.1. VSM Assembly of VSM
5 a 26 / 11
The excavation unit arrives on the jobsite in three parts. The lower part
includes the road header boom with the cutting drum. The upper part
consists of the machine body itself. The machine arms are screwed
onto the machine body along with the frame for the protective net
and the protective net itself. The net prevents any items falling in the
shaft accidentally from getting into the cutting drum and the slurry
line and creating any damage to the machine.
Approximately one day is required to assemble all the components
and to prepare the machine for the specific diameter.
2.2.2. Dimensioning and Installation of Lowering Units
The lowering unit consists of the strand jacks and the coiled
steel strands on a drum. For each specific project the number of
strands is calculated upfront. This number is calculated in a way
that considers the predicted weight of the shaft and the machine
as well as the buoyancy force (and a predicted friction of the shaft
wall surface).
When the lowering units are installed they are secured by anchor
bolts to the steel or concrete foundation. The strands are fed through
the strand jacks and lowered through the annulus outside the shaft
wall to the cutting edge where they are connected to the cutting
edge. When the strands are tensioned they are fixed to the cutting
edge by steel wedges and an attachment plate to take the load of
the shaft.
Picture 6 shows the wedges and attachment plates at the cutting
edge and the strand jack connection.
When all strand jacks are installed and connected to the cutting
edge the strands can be tensioned and the start section is lifted a
couple of centimeters to remove the support steel plates under the
cutting edge.
2.2.3. Installation of VSM in Shaft and Calibration
The VSM can be lifted into the start section as one single lift by
mobile crane (See Picture 7). The VSM is positioned in the upper of
three different possible machine positions. The VSM can adjust its
position in the shaft by hydraulic cylinders by a stroke of 1m which
will be explained further in section 3.1.
5 a 26 / 13
5 a 26 / 15
The grouting of the shaft can be done through the pipes, hoses and
nozzles already installed and used for the annulus lubrication. The
shaft annulus is grouted from the ports in the shaft bottom. Since
the grout has a higher density than the bentonite, the bentonite in
the annulus is displaced by the grout. This process can be easily
checked since the bentonite will spill out of the annulus at the shaft
surface. As soon as grout reaches the surface the process can be
stopped. Finally, the shaft water can be pumped out and the shaft
is finished.

2.3.4. Rendimientos
In this challenging project the VSM could prove one of its biggest
advantages, the small footprint required for the jobsite. Picture 9
shows a jobsite in Naples next to a vital avenue with a total size of
approx. 300 m. The shafts themselves had a diameter of 4.5m and
a depth of around 45m.
16 / 5 a 26
A similar project was executed in Girona, Spain, where the VSM had
to excavate four shafts in similar conditions, one of them between
two rows of houses with a spacing of 12m.
Working on limited inner city job sites is one of the big benefits a
contractor has when using the VSM, besides the benefit of being
able to work under water and the increased safety and minimized
settlement risk.

alta fiabilidad y ventajas comprobadas.
5 a 26 / 23

26 / 5 a 26
