Abstract
Resumen
En los ltimos aos, se ha incrementado notoriamente el estudio sobre las funciones ejecutivas
prefrontales en nios de edad escolar. El objetivo
del presente estudio es analizar la influencia de
la edad y del estrato socioeconmico (ESE) en el
desempeo de tareas ejecutivas y conocer cules
son las variables socioeconmicas que predicen
una mejor ejecucin. Participaron 254 nios de 7
a 12 aos de edad de diferentes estratos socioeconmicos de la ciudad de Santa Fe, Argentina. Se
utiliz una batera de pruebas ejecutivas sensibles
a la funcin prefrontal. Los resultados obtenidos
sealan un efecto significativo de la edad y del
ESE sobre las funciones ejecutivas estudiadas.
Los diferentes dominios del constructo siguen una
trayectoria diferente segn el desarrollo y el efecto
del ESE. Adems, en todas las funciones ejecutivas
se evidencia un patrn de funcionamiento cognitivo
inferior en los nios de estrato socioeconmico bajo
(ESB). Finalmente, se encontr que, de las variables incluidas en el anlisis, solo el nivel educativo
de la madre y las condiciones de alojamiento de la
familia se asocian al funcionamiento ejecutivo de
los nios. Se discuten los resultados en funcin
de la influencia que ejerce la maduracin cerebral
y las variables ambientales en el funcionamiento
ejecutivo.

Introduccin
Durante los ltimos aos, se han formulado diversas definiciones y modelos tericos sobre las
funciones ejecutivas (FE) (Barkley, 1997; Denckla, 1996; Fuster, 1997; Lezak, 1995; Luria, 1974;
Stuss & Benson, 1984). En general, el trmino FE
se utiliza para hacer referencia a un constructo multidimensional que engloba una serie de procesos
cognitivos necesarios para realizar tareas complejas
dirigidas hacia un objetivo. Segn Lezak (1982) a
quien se le atribuye el trmino FE, estas funciones
incluyen las capacidades necesarias para formular
objetivos, planificar cmo alcanzarlos y ejecutar estos planes de manera eficaz. Esta autora diferencia
cuatro componentes del constructo: volicin, planificacin, accin intencional y desempeo eficaz
(Lezak, 1982, 1995).
Un modelo terico y multicomponente investigado sobre las FE fue el desarrollado por Barkley
(1997, 2001). Este autor propuso un modelo que
enfatiza el papel de la conducta inhibitoria en el
funcionamiento de otras cuatro funciones ejecutivas: memoria de trabajo, autorregulacin del
afecto-motivacin-arousal, internalizacin del lenguaje y reconstitucin. Conforme con Barkley, la
conducta inhibitoria y el control de interferencia
favorecen la autorregulacin y las acciones ejecutivas al permitir el tiempo de demora necesario para
decidir una respuesta.
A pesar del progresivo avance en el estudio de
las FE, la naturaleza dimensional del constructo
an sigue siendo tema de debate. Por un lado, hay
autores que sostienen una visin unitaria de las FE
(De Frias, Dixon & Strauss, 2006; Wiebe, Espy &
Charak, 2008) que postula y defiende la existencia
de un mecanismo subyacente comn que explicara las variaciones en el funcionamiento frontal
y podra dar cuenta de sus disfunciones. Por otro
lado, hay quienes sostienen que las FE tienen una
naturaleza unitaria y diversa (i.e., the unity-butdiversity view) (Collette et al., 2005; Lehto, Juujrvi, Kooistra & Pulkkinen, 2003; Miyake et al.,
2000). De acuerdo con esta visin, la naturaleza
de las FE es diversa debido a que su estructura se
explica por factores separados, pero a su vez unitaria, debido a que estos no son del todo indepen-

Los procesos de maduracin cerebral que comienzan en la temprana infancia se prolongan incluso hasta la posadolescencia. Mediante estudios
de neuroimgenes se ha registrado un crecimiento
lineal del volumen de la sustancia blanca desde la
infancia hasta la adultez (Giedd et al., 1999; Paus
et al., 1999) y cambios regionales no lineales en la
densidad de la sustancia gris cortical, con un aumento durante la infancia y la prepubertad seguido
de una prdida durante la pospubertad (Giedd et al.,
1999; Gogtay et al., 2004). As mismo, se han informado cambios en los procesos de mielinizacin cerebral (Sowell, Thompson, Tessner & Toga, 2001;
Sowell et al. 2004), en los procesos sinpticos (Huttenlocher & Dabholkar, 1997), en las conexiones
interhemisfricas (Thompson et al., 2000) y en el
metabolismo cerebral (Chugani, 1999).
Estos cambios estructurales y funcionales se
corresponden con la emergencia de diversas funciones cognitivas. Se ha sugerido que el incremento
de las capacidades cognitivas coincidira con una
prdida gradual de las sinapsis, ms que con un
incremento de estas, y probablemente con el fortalecimiento de las conexiones sinpticas existentes
(Casey, Giedd & Thomas, 2000).
Desarrollo segn dominio ejecutivo
que se produce un incremento con la edad en la activacin cerebral del crtex prefrontal dorsolateral
durante el test Stroop (Schroeter, Zysset, Wahl &
Von Cramon, 2004). Esto refleja la influencia de la
maduracin cerebral en la tarea.
En sntesis, se observa cmo el desarrollo normal del crtex prefrontal se acompaa de cambios
funcionales y estructurales progresivos que se
prolongan hasta la posadolescencia. De este modo,
es posible inferir cmo el desempeo en las funciones ejecutivas debera mejorar con el acontecer
de los aos, como reflejo de la maduracin de las
estructuras cerebrales que las sustentan.
Factores ambientales: efectos del estrato
socioeconmico (ESE) sobre el desarrollo
de las FE

Mtodo social Graffar-Mndez Castellano (Mndez-Castellano & De Mndez, 1994): permite caracterizar socioeconmicamente a la poblacin. La
escala evala cuatro variables: profesin del jefe
de familia, nivel de instruccin de la madre, principal fuente de ingreso de la familia y condiciones
de alojamiento. Consta de cinco estratos: estrato I
(clase alta: puntuaciones entre 4 a 6); estrato II (clase medio-alta: 7 a 9); estrato III (clase medio-baja:
10 a 12); estrato IV (pobreza relativa: 13 a 16); y
estrato V (pobreza crtica: 17 a 20).

Procedimientos estadsticos
Los resultados del Anova indican diferencias significativas segn la edad en cuanto a la tarea de
memoria de trabajo, la tarea de fluidez verbal y el
test de Stroop. En la tabla 1, se presentan los valores medios y contrastes post hoc para cada grupo
de edad.
