It is easy to convince people in the developed world that they ought to take more care of their health. People
generally do very little physical exercise in the course of their daily routine. On the other hand, the abundance
of high calorie food and todays fast food habits cause many people to be overweight. This is neither good for
one's health in general nor in keeping with the fashion of our time, which exalts slim figures.
It comes as no surprise, then, that doctors and dieticians are constantly warning us of the dangers of our life
styles and reminding us that we ought to lose weight, that we ought to cut down on high fat foods, eat more
fruit and vegetables and, of course, do more exercise. On the other hand, many centres for body care lose
no opportunity to promote their business by encouraging people to lose those extra centimetres and be more in

I had already visited most of the continental European countries. Last year I planned to spend my holidays in
England, at a small country hotel. It was a long way from the nearest town because I wanted some peace and
quiet. But when I got off the train, which stopped at a very small station, I had doubts about my choice.
The place looked like a deserted village. There was not a single porter to help me with my luggage. So I
had to carry my heavy suitcases to the station yard to hire a taxi. But there was no taxi either. All I could
see from the railway station was a number of narrow streets which led to nowhere, or so it seemed to me. I
was at a loss. At last I saw a young woman coming along one of the streets. When she was about to pass by

I like visiting the places I go to, and walking round a museum has always been my idea of
spending a free afternoon in a most gratifying way.
The history of museums through the ages is closely linked to the history of society and the evolution
of knowledge. There is no doubt that both society and knowledge are important enough matters for
raising the interest of normal people, even if both subjects were to be judged from a pessimistic point
of view.
Museums, which alone can speak the language of real things, will increasingly become an
antidote to the culture of images and words. The importance of museums is such that, if they did
not exist, they would have to be invented. As instruments of education and culture, museums are
centres of development for all men, through demonstration of the continuity of culture, provided
they adopt an integrated vision of science and humanities.
Socially, museums make no distinctions of class, race or age. They provide visitors with an
enduring insight into the problems of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. They are, finally and above all

I shall never forget my first visit to a Welsh village. It stood near a little river. The mountains rose high
all around it. The houses were two-storey, built of rock and brick, and roofed with slate tiles. The
bedrooms and the bathroom were upstairs. The living-room, the dining-room, the kitchen and the
toilet were on the ground floor. Stony tracks ran between the rows of houses. On a cloudy day these
Welsh villages look rather lonely and gloomy, but on sunny days they look wonderful. Folk songs
could be heard from a pub nearby. The Welsh are very fond of music and poetry.
The Welsh population is mostly Celtic in origin and many Welsh people can speak the language of
their ancestors. On the other hand, those old Welsh villages are the perfect setting for filming the
romantic scenes of ancient historical stories of love and mystery. The magic of those charming old
villages reminds the visitor of the time when, sitting by the fire on a cold winter night, one used to
read to the children some of the marvellous fairy tales which they enjoyed so much.

I love seafood. The only trouble is that shellfish is very expensive. Its prices are high enough to make
it a rarity in most countries. To the surprise of visitors to Spain, shellfish can be bought in markets,
bars and restaurants. In this respect, Madrid, an inland city far away from the Spanish coast, is
perhaps the best place to enjoy seafood. Its great variety, as well as its excellent quality, is quite
remarkable. It may be of interest to know that all along the Galician coastline you can find goose
barnacles. Cooked in boiling water and with plenty of salt, they are perhaps the best shellfish of all.
At a Spanish market there is such a variety of things that it is like going to a hardware store. "I don't
know the names of most of the fish here," says Mrs. Baker. Look at the fruit, Sally. says her
mother. There is such a wonderful variety of fruit here, cherries, strawberries, oranges, bananas, pears,
apples, peaches, melons, water melons, lemons, and apricots. On the other hand, its flavour is quite
different from what we get in England. Spanish fruit is obviously much better. It is sweeter and more
juicy.

Mr. Baker rang the police to report a traffic accident which had happened just outside his house.
But Sally was the one who had seen it all from the front garden, where she was watering the
flowers. She described the accident accurately and the policeman said that she had been a great
help. He kindly asked Sally to call in at the police station and make a formal statement at her
earliest convenience. She readily agreed and added that she would willingly testify in court if
required.
In western European legal systems the role of the lawyer, in both civil and criminal litigation,
differs from what it is in the Anglo-American area. In the past, lawyers were available only to those

systems for the provision of aid in both criminal and civil matters, which is administered by
government bodies and legal associations.

The environment is everything that surrounds us: animals, plants, forests, rivers, water, air and
everything that can affect us in any way. Man is certainly a part of the environment, but he has done
more to upset the ecology than any other living creature. He has polluted both land and water and
poisoned the atmosphere, that is, the air which surrounds the whole earth.
But air, in turn, is made up of a number of gases, of which oxygen is the most important to us. Oxygen
goes into our lungs. There, it is taken by the blood and carried to all parts of our bodies. Human
beings cannot do without this element, as life without it is just unthinkable. Oxygen is also necessary
for animals and plants alike, and for burning. There is plenty of air, but only one fifth of air is oxygen.
Scientists have discovered a hole in the ozone layer which is already causing what is known as
"greenhouse effect." It is obvious that man has done a lot of damage to the environment with no
thought for the future. So it is up to man to put things right, if it is not already too late.

Mrs. Devon was a healthy old woman. She was eighty two years old, but was still able to do some
work as a cleaner. She had neither a home of her own nor a close relative to live with. She had a
room in the house of her daughter-in-law, who had recently lost her husband in a road accident and
disliked her mother-in-law intensely. Her two grand-children did not like her either. They used to

turned her face to the wall. She refused to eat and lost all interest in life. Fortunately, a sweet,

My name is Nigel Dodd and I live in Wellyn Garden City, a beautiful little town about 50 kilometres
north of London. Like hundreds of other people from my town and hundreds of thousands of people
around Britain, I am a commuter; that is, every morning I travel from my home town to a bigger city, in
this case London, and back. I travel on British Rail's commuter trains.
Organization is the key word in the life of a commuter and our day begins the night before. So, every
night, before I go to bed, I prepare my briefcase and lay it beside the hall door. I put the clothes I am
going to wear next day on a chair and lay the table for breakfast. When my alarm clock rings, I jump out
of bed, wash, dress and have breakfast. I walk to the station and if my train is on time I only have to
wait 2 or 3 minutes for it. When we arrive at Kings Cross Station, I get off the train, rush across the
platform, up one flight of stairs and down another, and catch the underground. When I get off the
underground I get out onto the street and have a short walk to my office. My boss lives next door to the
office and when he arrives I am usually sitting at my desk with a pile of files in front of me.
In the evening the routine begins again and I go back to Wellyn Garden City in the same way. When I
get home I have a bath, relax and I have plenty of time to work in the garden, go to the park, walk the
streets, or the country roads and paths, go out for a drink, or call on friends. What do I do last thing at
night? Exactly! Prepare for the following day.

A friend of Paul's once thought up a clever method of passing an exam. He wrote several answers
on little pieces of paper and put them in the pockets of his raincoat. He hoped that no one would see
him taking them out during the exam, and that he would be able to copy the information from them
without any difficulties. For days he practised carefully in order to become very skilful at taking out
the pieces of paper. He showed some of his friends what he thought was a perfect way of passing an

If you happen to be in Edinburgh, don't forget to pay a visit to Surgeons Square.

Since Mary Queen of Scots gave the surgeons a special charter in 1567, Edinburgh
surgeons have helped to lay the foundation for modern surgery. Many of the surgeons
who kept developing the science over the centuries are now forgotten, but others are
famous names in the history of surgery.
Among the most famous of these was James Syme, Professor of Surgery from 1833 to
1869. His methods of operating were so drastic and fast that his colleagues ended up
calling him The Napoleon of Surgery. One of the principal characteristics of
surgeons at that time was their physical strength. There was no anaesthesia and
surgeons had to work extremely quickly to operate and stop the patient bleeding to
death in a question of minutes or seconds.
In 1853, Queen Victoria agreed to receive anaesthesia during the birth of her ninth child.
The era of painless operation was, at last, firmly established and mankind owes a great
debt to men like Liston and Simpson and countless others whose names are lost forever.

In 1853, Queen Victoria agreed to receive anaesthesia during the birth of her ninth child.
The era of painless operation was, at last, firmly established and mankind owes a great
debt to men like Liston and Simpson and countless others whose names are lost forever.

The three Bront sisters together published a book which contained the poems written by each
one of them. The book received some favourable reviews but only sold two copies. We can
imagine how they must have been feeling after the poor reception of their first book and in
the midst of the family tragedy. Were they despairing, were they thinking of giving up?
Despite all their sorrows, worries, solitude and disappointment, the three sisters did not
despair and they continued to apply their talent and determination to writing. They have left
the world with some of the most extraordinary novels in the history of literature: Charlottes
most famous work is Jane Eyre, Emilys only and equally well-known novel is Wuthering
Heights and Annes second novel The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, though less famous than the
former two, is nevertheless, just as interesting and magnificent.
The three sisters were all stricken by tuberculosis and died very young. The father outlived all
his children and the fame and recognition of their work helped him bear the tragedy of their
lives.

Almost every day we hear somebody say safety first. Unfortunately, safety is not always first and
many things go wrong because it isnt. Do you ever remember closing a door and suddenly
remembering that your keys are inside? Perhaps you parked your car on a slope without thinking of
the handbrake.
Many road accidents happen because people drive quickly and dangerously. Health problems arise
because people often smoke or drink heavily. Forest fires break out because people carelessly throw
away cigarette butts or dont extinguish picnic fires carefully enough.
Naturally, one cannot spend ones whole life constantly thinking about Safety and danger, but it is
advisable to be reasonably careful. Statistics show that driving more slowly reduces the number of
road accidents. And statistics also show that drivers in some countries drive more carefully than in
others. When you see a British driver waiting patiently for a pedestrian to cross the street at a
pedestrian crossing, it will not be a surprise to hear that Britain has a fairly good reputation for road
safety.

Seeing such a magnificent display of shellfish in markets, bars and restaurants surprises
visitors to Madrid and seeing how Spanish people consume this delicacy is yet another
surprise. Why? Well, in the first place, Madrid is an inland city ranging from 350 to
over 600 kilometers away from the coasts where this highly perishable shellfish is
found. Secondly, the prices of shellfish are high enough to make it a rarity in most
countries.
A huge variety of types of this seafood is found all round the Spanish coast with Galicia
figuring as the home of the product. There are many reasons why shellfish is so
expensive, not least among these being the dangers involved in fishing for it. Anybody
who has any doubts about this will quickly change his or her mind after spending an
hour or two watching a couple of Galician people collecting percebes -goose barnacles.
Dressing in a wet suit and hanging onto a strong rope, one percebeiro descends the
rugged rocks of the formidable Galician coastline. Waiting for a wave to lash against the
rocks, the percebeiro then rushes down to water level as the wash is retreating from the
coast. Quickly cutting off a cluster of barnacles, he rushes back up the cliff before
another mighty wave crashes against the rocks, just where he had retrieved the barnacles.
With perfect timing the percebeiro repeats this action again and again, until he has a
sizeable amount of goose barnacles.

In 1588, the formidable crescent formation of the Invincible Armada was broken by the English
fire ships, fighting and storms. It was decided that the defeated Armada would return to Spain.
Captain Cuellars ship went ahead of the rest of the Armada when he then was accused of breaking
ranks and was summoned on board the Flagship and sentenced to death.
Appealing his case, the sentence was not carried out and when his ship was driven by fierce
winds onto the Irish coast and wrecked there, most of his companions were drowned, Cuellar,
though unable to swim, was thrown onto the shore. Escaping inland, he was given some milk by an
old native Irish woman and narrowly escaped being captured by English soldiers. Days later, he
and other survivors rushed back to the coast where another Spanish ship had come to collect them.
Cuellar was delayed by a leg injury and arrived when the ship had already gone.
Once more, Cuellar made his way back inland and was sheltered by an Irish chieftain. They
were surrounded by English soldiers, but were saved by Cuellars tactics. Cuellar was interested in getting
back to Spain so he set out for the coast of Northern Ireland. Narrowly escaping English troops on several
occasions, he was aided by the Catholic Bishop of Deny and was taken by boat to Scotland. From there a
boat which was commissioned to take him back to the Spanish territories in the Low Countries also sank
but, finally, he managed to get safely to Flanders. All those remarkable events are kept today in the

If you happen to be in Edinburgh, don't forget to pay a visit to Surgeons Square. Since Mary
Queen of Scots gave the surgeons a special charter in 1567, Edinburgh surgeons have helped to lay
the foundation for modern surgery. Many of the surgeons who kept developing the science over the
centuries are now forgotten, but others are famous names in the history of surgery.
Among the most famous of these was James Syme, Professor of Surgery from 1833 to 1869.
His methods of operating were so drastic and fast that his colleagues ended up calling him The
Napoleon of Surgery. One of the principal characteristics of surgeons at that time was their
physical strength. There was no anaesthesia and surgeons had to work extremely quickly to
operate and stop the patient bleeding to death in a question of minutes or seconds.
These operations were nevertheless horrific from the point of view of patients. Shortly
afterwards, these terrible scenes began to change. Dr Robert Liston, a surgeon famed for being able to
amputate a leg in less than one minute, heard of the use of ether in America and successfully
experimented with it. Dr James Young Simpson later tried chloroform. In 1853, Queen Victoria agreed
to receive anaesthesia during the birth of her ninth child. The era of painless operation was, at last,
firmly established and mankind owes a great debt to men like Liston and Simpson and countless others
whose names are lost forever.

professional years with his friend and colleague Dr. Watson; the residence was maintained by Mrs.
Hudson. Sherlock Holmes describes himself as a "consulting detective", which means that he participates
in cases that are too difficult for other investigators; he is often able to solve a problem without leaving
home. He specializes in solving unusual cases using his extraordinary powers of observation and
"deduction". Sir Arthur Conan Doyle explained that Holmes was based on one of his teachers at the
medical college of Edinburgh University, the gifted surgeon and forensic detective Joseph Bell. Forensic
science was a new type of science at the time. However, some years later, Bell wrote to Conan Doyle:
"You are yourself Sherlock Holmes and well you know it". It is a popular mistake that Sherlock Holmes
gave rise to the entire genre of murder mystery fiction; in reality, the detective genre existed before
Holmes, but none followed a logical progression to the solution. Many fictional detectives have imitated
Holmes' logical methods and followed in his footsteps in many different ways. Some of the more popular
fictional detectives to continue Holmes legacy include Agatha Christies Hercule Poirot, Dick Tracy,
Columbo, and even the comic book superhero Batman. Modern variants might be the TV series show Law
and Order.
