VALPARASO

Valparaso es una ciudad ubicada en el litoral central del territorio continental del pas.
La ciudad es la sede del Congreso Nacional, la Comandancia en Jefe de la Armada de Chile y de otros servicios pblicos e instituciones del Estado de carcter nacional como el Consejo Nacional de la Cultura y las Artes, la Subsecretara de Pesca, el Servicio Nacional de Aduanas y el Servicio Nacional de Pesca y Acuicultura. Valparaso se presenta en forma de un gran anfiteatro natural, estando emplazada en una baha rodeada de cerros, en los cuales vive la mayor parte de la poblacin. Entre el pie de los cerros y el mar se forma el plan de la ciudad, centro administrativo, comercial y financiero; mientras que el borde mar se encuentra ocupado por el puerto. Valparaso se mantiene como un importante centro administrativo, comercial, cultural y universitario; y en el ao 2003 la Unesco declar al casco antiguo de la ciudad como Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad. Uno de los principales atractivos tursticos de la cuidad corresponde La Iglesia La Matriz esta est ubicada en la ciudad de Valparaso, en pleno corazn del barrio puerto, en el llamado casco histrico de la ciudad, est rodeada de calles de adoquines y casas de fines del siglo XIX de un estilo muy porteo. 6

CITY OF VALPARASO

Valparaiso is a city located at the central littoral of the continental territory of Chile.
The city is home to the National Congress and the National Army Headquarters as well as other public services and state institutions of national character such as the Arts and Culture National Board, the Fishing Undersecretary, the Customs National Service and the Fishing and Aquaculture National Service. Valparaso is laid out like a big natural amphitheatre. It is situated around a bay surrounded by hills in which most of its population lives. Its downtown, administrative, commercial and financial center is located between the hills and the sea. Its seashore is occupied by the harbor. Valparaso is still considered as an important administrative, commercial, cultural and university center. In 2003, the old part of the town was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. One of its main tourist attractions is the Iglesia La Matriz. It is located at the heart of the seaport neighborhood in the so called old part of the town. Its surrounded by paved stone streets and houses built during the late XIX century.

HISTORIA DE IGLESIA LA MATRIZ

La Parroquia del Puerto

La historia religiosa de Valparaso florece en sus mltiples expresiones. Es una historia, a la vez de fidelidad y confianza; fidelidad a la fe profesada por los que desde la fundacin del primer templo en Valparaso han sido los pilares de nuestra historia religiosa.

La Matriz, como el cerro Santo Domingo, es parte de los inicios de Valparaso. La historia de la Iglesia es tan antigua como la de la ciudad, originndose en una pequea capilla levantada en el ao 1559, para la devocin de Nuestra Seora de las Mercedes, en la caleta de Quintil. Junto a ella se fueron agrupando las primeras familias criollas, inicindose as el desarrollo urbano de Valparaso.

Durante los siglos XVII y XVIII los constantes ataques de piratas y los terremotos destruyeron sucesivamente las tres iglesias levantadas en el sitio de la primera capilla. La que est hoy corresponde a la cuarta versin, obra del prroco Jos Antonio Riob, quien adems asumi la construccin y direccin de la obra. La construccin fue finalizada en 1842. Alrededor hay viviendas simples, pero de gran valor tanto por su estilo eclctico. Sus calles son peatonales, ya sea por su estrechez como por las escaleras y pasajes las que a su vez dan lugar a inusuales plazuelas.

IGLESIA LA MATRIZ HISTORY

The harbors church
Valparaisos religious history spreads in numerous ways. Loyalty and familiarity are some of those; loyalty to the followed faith by the ones who since the foundation of the first temple in Valparaso have been the pillars of our religious history.

La Matriz and Santo Domingo Hill are part of the beginning of Valparaiso. The churchs history is as old as the city, having originated in a little chapel that was built in 1559 for devoting Nuestra Seora de las Mercedes, at the Quintil pier. The first creole families were associated closely to the church and initiated Valparasos urban development.

During XVII and XVIII the constant pirate attacks and earthquakes successively destroyed three churches that were built at the site of the first chapel. The church that remains today belongs to the fourth version; work of the parish priest Jos Antonio Riob, who also assumed the building process. The construction was finished in 1842. Surrounding it, there are simple houses that are valuable due to their eclectic style. Most of the streets become pedestrian walkways at some point, whether because of their narrowness or for the stairways and passages that end in unusual little squares.

Desde el gnesis de Valparaso existe una imagen religiosa que conmueve el espritu y se identifica con el dolor de los creyentes. Es un cristo policromado, que habra sido enviado como tantas otras imgenes religiosas, por el rey Felipe II para contribuir a la instauracin de la fe catlica en sus colonias al igual que otras leyendas, la llegada de esta imagen tiene su propia historia que es narrada por el padre Rosales: tradicin cuenta que cuando llego a nuestras playas, lo pusieron en una carreta para llevarlo a la capital. Al pasar por la iglesia la matriz, se atasc esta de tal modo que no se pudo mover. Abren el cajn y al ver la efigie venerada de Jesucristo crucificada, los files lo colocaron en esta iglesia, diciendo que no haba forma de subirlo por el cerro de carreteras, era voluntad del cielo, se venerara en Valparaso. La devota imagen es mirada con sumo respeto y veneracin por todos los files. Cuanto ms se le mira, ms piedad y devocin se siente el que le contempla. Todos creen que su cabeza se inclina cada vez ms.

LA MATRIZ CHRIST
Since the origin of Valparaso there has been a religious image that touches the spirit and indentifies with the pain of the faithful. It is a polychrome Christ that may have been sent, along with many other religious images, by King Felipe II in order to contribute the instauration of the catholic faith in his colonies. The arrival of this image has its own story that is narrated by Father Rosales: The story says that when the image arrived to our beaches it was put in a wagon so as to take it to the capital. When they passed through the church the wagon got so stuck that it couldnt be moved anymore. As the box was opened and they saw the statue of the crucified Jesus Christ the faithful laid the statue in this church saying that there was no way of carrying it up the highway hill; it was heavens will and it should be worshiped in Valparaso. The devoted image is seen with high respect and worship by all the faithful. The more it is adored the deeper the piety and devotion that feels the one who contemplates it. Everybody believes that its head bends more and more.

NUESTRA SEORA DE LA AURORA

Otro tesoro de la parroquia es un cuadro pintado a oleo con la imagen virgen, bajo la advocacin de nuestra seora de la aurora. Nuestra seora de la aurora Mide 60 cm de alto por 45 centmetros. De ancho y est enmarcada en plata repujada. Tambin donado por el rey Felipe II, fue trado a la parroquia a comienzos del siglo XVII. Desde entonces la imagen concito la simpata y la fe de los fieles que muy pronto le atribuyeron manifestaciones milagrosas. La tradicin cuenta que por el ao 1688 se le vio derramar lgrimas durante siete das, entre el 8 y el 14 de julio, lo que mantuvo expectante y en permanente oracin a los escasos vecinos del sector porteo. Ya en el sptimo de esta celestial manifestacin, el cura prroco don Juan Velsquez de Covarrubias, decidi sacarla en procesin por el entorno parroquial entre cnticos de alabanzas y oraciones penitenciales. 15

NUESTRA SEORA DE LA AURORA

Another treasure of the church is an oil painting with the image of the virgin dedicated to Nuestra Seora de la Aurora. Its height is 23.6 inches and its width is 17.7 inches and it is framed by embossed silver. It was also donated by King Felipe II and was brought to the church at the beginning of the XVII century. Since then, the image has stirred up empathy and faith in the faithful who immediately attributed miraculous manifestations to it. The story tells that by the year 1688 the image shed tears for seven days, from July the 8th to July the 14th .It kept expectant and in permanent prayer to the few neighbors of the place. On the seventh day of this celestial manifestation, the parish priest Juan Velsquez de Covarrubias decided to take it out in a procession around the neighborhood amidst sacred songs and prayers.

What kinds of activities are done at the church?

Everyday a series of activities are done mainly focused on the community of the seaport neighborhood in order to revive this area of the city and to turn it into the nerve centre of the fifth region.

LA OLLA DEL POBRE, ORIGEN DEL COMEDOR 421

En el siglo XIX el progreso de Valparaso baj mucho. El pueblo no tena trabajo a causa del estado de los negocios comerciales. El hambre y las mltiples necesidades consuman a las familias porteas. La iglesia se hizo parte de esta necesidad, por lo que se inaugur la Olla de Santa Ana. Este fue un recurso de emergencia para quienes no tenan que comer. Esta era una nueva versin de la Olla del pobre, ya que aos antes fue organizada por la Hermana de la Caridad Sor Vicenta Pinto y bajo la supervisin del Prroco don Vicente Martin y Manero. Se cocinaba en una gran olla y se llevaba a los ms necesitados. Por otro lado a las familias con ms recursos econmicos que cayeron en esta crisis, se les daba mercadera y se llevaban a sus casas escondidos, se les llamaban familias vergonzantes. Hoy en da, el comedor 421 renen ms de cien personas diariamente. Constituye hoy un digno ejemplo de convivencia humana y solidaridad en el corazn de Valparaso. El recinto ayuda a gente casi sin futuro que es el producto de sta cultura consumista y que va dejando gente botada en el camino, dijo el obispo Duarte y agreg que viene gente muy pobre, mucho alcohlico, personas a las que ya se ve muy difcil recuperar, pero a los cuales nosotros siempre queremos cuidar. Se les recibe, se les baa, se les cambia la ropa, se les vacuna y hasta se les corta el pelo. Y aunque muchos llegan a los pocos das igual a como estaban antes, igualmente nosotros seguimos, sentenci el obispo. 19

THE SOUP KITCHEN; ORIGIN OF THE DINING ROOM 421

In the XIX century, Valparasos progress went down. The people didnt have a job because of the state of the business. Hunger and multiple necessities consumed the seaport families. The church took part of this necessity so Santa Anas soup kitchen was inaugurated. It was an emergency resource for those who couldnt have a single meal. This was the new version of the soup kitchen which had been organized some years before by Hermana de la Caridad Sor Vicenta Pinto under the supervision of the parish Vicente Martn and Manero. Meals were cooked in a big pot and then delivered to the ones that needed it most. On the other hand, the richer families that fell into this crisis were given food and they took it hidden to their houses; they were called the embarrassing families Nowadays, the dining room 421 gathers more than a hundred people every day. It constitutes, today, a worthy example of human coexistence and solidarity at the heart of Valparaso. It helps people who have almost no future who are products of this consumerist culture that leaves them behind , said the bishop Duarte and added that people very poor come to the place, a lot of alcoholics, people to whom its quite hard to recover but to whom we always want to look after. They are received, they are bathed, their clothes are changed, they are vaccinated and even they get their hair cut. And although lot of people come to the place days after just like they were days before, anyway, we go on, stated the bishop. 20

PROGRAMA ALFABETIZACIN DIGITAL

ste programa es tanto para los nios como adultos y 3ra edad. El curso presenta una introduccin general a los conceptos de la computadora y su terminologa incluyendo Hardware y los Software. Las distintas familias de computadoras y sus dispositivos de entrada y salida como partes de la Unidad Central de Procesamiento (CPU) son estudiados as como los conceptos bsicos y avanzados de Excel, Word y PowerPoint. El Taller se dividir en cinco grupos los que son esenciales para el aprendizaje del alumno. Cada grupo tendr su respectivo Diploma el cual certifica la aprobacin del curso.

DIGITAL LITERACY PROGRAM

This program is meant for children as well as for adults and senior citizens. The course presents a general introduction of the concepts of the computer and its terminology including Hardware and Software. Different sorts of computers and its input and output devices, as parts of the Central Processing Unit (CPU), are studied as well as the basic and advanced concepts of Excel, Word and Power Point. The course will be divided into five groups which are essential for the students learning process. Each group will receive its corresponding certificate which certifies that the student has passed the course.

ESCUELA DE FTBOL FUTVALORES AQU TODOS SOMOS VERDES!

El Club de Deportes Santiago Wanderers estar a cargo de organizar la Escuela de Ftbol para los nios del barrio, con el apoyo de estudiantes del rea de Preparacin Fsica de DuocUC, y de la Municipalidad de Valparaso. La escuela de ftbol quiere entregar a los menores, conocimientos tcnico-tcticos de este juego, adems de transmitir valores asociados al deporte como la disciplina, perseverancia, esfuerzo, trabajo en equipo, entre otros, que ayuden al nio en su vida diaria y futura. Para el padre Gonzalo Bravo, el apoyo de Santiago Wanderers es importantsimo; Valparaso es Santiago Wanderers, y Wanderers es Valparaso. El aporte del Decano es esencial para darles aliento de vida a los nios y jvenes de La Matriz. 23

FUTVALORES SOCCER SCHOOL: HERE WE`RE ALL GREEN

Futvalores Soccer Club will be in charge of organizing the Soccer School for children of the neighborhood with the support of the students at the Physical Conditioning Program from DuocUC University and Valparasos local council. The Soccer School wants children to be taught from technical and tactic knowledge of the game and also to transmit them principles associated with sports such as discipline, perseverance, effort, team work, among others, that would help kids in their daily and future life. To Father Gonzalo Bravo, Santiago Wanderers support is highly important; Valparaso is Santiago Wanderers and Wanderers is Valparaso. The deans contribution is essential for encouraging the children and young people that attend to La Matriz. 24

Grupo de Oracin Luz y Amor

Se renen todos los viernes para orar y compartir vivencias y experiencias, dando gracias a Dios por todas la bendiciones entregadas durante la semana, pidiendo por sus familias, amigos y vecinos.

Grupo Sol de Primavera

Grupo dedicado para padres y adultos mayores, que junto a un tecito, todos los viernes comparten sus experiencias en torno a la mesa. Instancia rica y fructfera que da al abuelo nimo, ya que ste se rejuvenece en el compartir.

Infancia Misionera
Grupo que rene a nios de 6 a 12 aos para compartir la alegra del Seor, aprendiendo de l en forma ldica .Instancia ideal para todos esos nios que despus de realizar el sacramento de la eucarista, desean pasarlo bien.

EJE
Nuestra sigla EJE significa: Encuentro de Jvenes en el Espritu Santo. Somos un movimiento cristiano de jvenes de la Iglesia Catlica, perteneciente a las Comunidades Cristianas de Encuentro en el Espritu Santo (CCEES), compuesto por personas de distintos orgenes, de diferentes edades, preferentemente desde 16 a 22 aos; abierto a distintos credos religiosos y diferentes clases sociales. Nos juntamos como hermanos a compartir nuestras vidas, a crecer de la mano de Jess y a mejorar el mundo partiendo de un mejoramiento de nosotros mismos, a travs del carisma humanizante del lenguaje de los sentimientos profundos.

Light and love prayer group
They get together every Friday for praying, sharing experiences, giving thanks to God for the blessings given during the week, praying for their families, friends and neighbors.

Spring Sun Group

It is a group meant for parents and senior citizens that every Friday share their experiences, with a cup of tea, at the table. These are rich and fructiferous moments that give spirit to the old man since he gets rejuvenated when sharing.

Missionary Children
It is a group that gathers children from 6 to 12 years to share Gods joy learning from him in a ludic way. It is an ideal moment for all those children that, after they have done their first communion, want to have fun.

EJE
Our acronym EJE means: Encuentro de Jvenes en el Espritu Santo (Holy Ghost Youth Meeting). We are a Christian youth movement of the Catholic Church belonging to the Comunidades Cristianas de Encuentro en el Espiritu Santo (CCEES), formed by people of different origins, different ages, preferentially from 16 to 22 years. It is opened to different creed and different social classes. We gather together as brothers to share our lives, to grow up taken by the hand of Jesus and to improve the world beginning with our own improvement through the humanizing charm of the language of the deep feelings.

Catequesis
Destinada a cubrir las reas: Bautismal, Primera Comunin, Confirmacin y Matrimonio. La dimensin formativa de la fe, es asumida en la iglesia por los pastores (sacerdotes) y catequistas. Los catequistas son cristianos comprometidos con Dios y con la Iglesia. Tras un tiempo de formacin, transmiten, a los que se preparan para recibir un sacramento, su testimonio de vida y conocimientos necesarios para disponer el mayor encuentro de la persona y Dios. La catequesis se realiza los das sbados en la Parroquia. Deben asistir con el pap o la mam, o mejor an ambos, ya que no solo se le ensea a los chicos, sino que tambin a los padres, para guiar a sus hijos y ayudarle a realizar sus tareas y as recorrer ambos el camino de lo que es la Primera Comunin.

Catechism
It is destined to cover the areas: Baptismal, First Communion, Confirmation and Marriage. Faith formative dimension is assumed at the church by priests and catechists. Catechists are Christians committed to God and the church. After some formation time, they transmit, to the ones that are preparing to receive a sacrament, their testimony of life and necessary knowledge to prepare for the person and Gods great meeting. Catechism is done on Saturday the church. Children have to attend with their father or their mother, or even better with both, since not only kids are taught but their parents as well, in order to lead their sons and to help them to do their duties so as to go over ,as a whole, by the way of the First Communion.

La Parroquia cuenta con una cuenta corriente 9990744-4 del Banco Santander donde se pueden realizar las donaciones en dinero. La donaciones de artculos y alimentos pueden ser entregados en la parroquia para posteriormente ser derivados a las reas correspondientes como el comedor o los distintos centros de actividades.

How to donate?
The church has a checking account 9990744-4 at the Santander Bank in which donations can be done in cash. Food and Article donations can be delivered at the church so as to be sent to the corresponding areas such as the dining room or the different centers of activities.

A Iglesia La Matriz B Plaza Echaurren: existen diversos restaurant donde podr disfrutar de pescados y
mariscos tpicos de la zona. At the restaurants located in this area you will be able to enjoy fish and seafood dishes, very typical of the region.

C Plaza Sotomayor; edificio de la armada de chile, cada 21 de mayo se rinden honores a los hroes patrios. Adems podr visitar el museo subterrneo que les rinde tributos a los hroes patrios. Chilean navy is placed in here. May 21st of every year the patriotic heroes are honored in this square. In this same place you will find an underground museum that honors our heroes.

Informacin: Esta ruta est planeada para llegar a pie, de igual forma es posible llegar al mirador del cerro artillera utilizando uno de los ascensores ms tpicos de la regin por un mdico precio que puede fluctuar entre $100 y $250 dependiendo del da y horario.

Information: The routes described above are planned to be done by walking, anyways you may also get to the viewpoint by using one of the most typical elevators of the region for a small fee that may change depending on the day and the time.
