O is ado
tolo e o outro listo, nunha casiña.
A primeira noite colleunos
deixase embaixo, tombouna nunha póla e deitouse enriba dela.
llo, agarrou a cancela e chimpouna dende o alto.

ques, condes e outra moita xente rica.
—Sabe Deus canto! —dicían uns.
—E canto valerán! —dicían outros.
O rei, descontento coas respostas, convidou a uns labregos e fíxolles a
mesma pregunta. Un dos labregos adiantouse e respondeu:
—Xaneiro rabioso, febreiro amoroso,
marzo ventoso e algo chuvioso,

−¡Cómo no!

The idea of movement suggested by this selection of stories (Stories that come
and go) hides a double mystery. Firstly, the mystery of how it is possible that the
somewhat oriental serenity of the stories can be construed in the background of
the diverse landscape of woods, forests and places of Galicia. Or, in other words,
the mystery of the reconstruction by the traditional Galician society of the topics
that shape the collection of stories from Europe and further away, which will feel
close to the readers of this book. Secondly, there is the mystery of the destiny of its
characters who, through the art of translation and the complicity of those that start
their journey with this book, will perpetuate their search for fortune in the world.
The aim of Contos de ida e volta is not that of creating a framework of morality that
does not match the expectations of our society, in which neither the female figure
nor certain social and professional categories come out unscathed, and where, in
line with the broadest Aarne-Thompson traditional classification system, the domi-
83
nating clergy is satirised.
However, this lack of modernity is only apparent. These stories have served their
purpose as a popular lab to test the scope of the Galician language usage, histori-
cally subjugated to the laws of Spanish. These stories seek that the listeners inter-
pret, in order to understand them, these actions that are not described or perceived
but in their most physical form: everything is movement and gestures, running and
birdsongs. Sometimes the voice of wisdom can be heard, like when the incurably
metaphysical fox turns round to make her sententious statement while running
away forever in haste. Also, the Other World and its boat keeper Death are never
far away from the world of the living in Galicia, a world (symbolically) looking for
food, because eating is at the core of the imagery that the contemporary Galician
society relives incessantly.
These stories have been chosen and re-written by Xabier Xil Xardón from four oral
Galician narrative anthologies and from the magazine Nós (1920-1936). The Gali-
cian stories collections, all from different sources and for different purposes, are:

TH E FRIGHTENE D HEN
Once there was a hen pecking the ground under a chestnut tree, when suddenly
a conker fell on her head. Very frightened, she started running backwards and
forwards until she came upon the cockerel:
- Run away from here Mr Cockerel, because the world’s falling apart!
- So, then, who told you that, Mrs Hen?
- It fell on my own crest.
Shortly afterwards the hare arrived and she said to her:
- Run away from here Mrs Hare, because the world’s falling apart!
- So, then, who told you that, Mrs Hen?
- It fell on my own crest.
She went away again and soon bumped into the lady fox:
- Run away from here Mrs Fox, because the world’s falling apart!
- So, then, who told you that, Mrs Hen?
- It fell on my own crest.
- Well, if it’s falling to pieces, I want to leave this world with a full stomach.

And the fox ate the talkative hen.

Once there was a blackbird that went to ask an ant for food,
and he said to her:
- Mrs Ant, could you kindly give me some food?
And the ant answered back:
- Crying blackbird, crying blackbird,
instead of spending the summer singing around,
food for the winter you should have found.

As soon as the priest was sitting inside and the sacristan was kneeling

- Could you repeat that, sir?
- Who’s been dipping bread in the church candle holders!
- Oh dear, oh dear, I can’t hear anything! If you don’t believe me, sir,

Once the roles had changed, the sacristan asked the priest:
- Who’s eating the snacks of the sacristan’s wife?

- Oh, well! You’re right. One can’t hear a word in here.

There was once a young bride who took her cows to graze by the churchyard every day and

The woman, tired of the priest always saying the same thing, told her husband and he said
to her:
- You should answer back in the same way and invite him to come over to the house in the
evening.
The following day, when the girl was as usual by the churchyard with her cattle, the priest
went on again:
- Chuscurruschus, my girl?
- Chuscurruschus, father!
- And when? – asked again the priest.
- This evening, because my husband’s out on a trip.
And so, after having enjoyed a very good dinner, the priest set off to the girl’s house. She

until the following day in the morning when the man released him and let him go.

TH E MAD M AN
AND THE WI SE M A N
Once there was a little old lady who lived with her two sons, one mad and the
wise, in a little house. On the day the woman passed away, the two brothers
decided to go out into the world seeking their fortune. But before they left,
the mad brother got it into his head that he had to take with him the house
gate and, no matter how much the wise brother tried to persuade him that
it was madness, the mad brother hoisted it on his back and set off. The first
nightfall caught them in the middle of the wood and, as they were afraid that
the wild animals might attack them, they agreed to sleep atop an oak tree. So
up went the mad brother carrying the gate on his back despite the requests
from his brother to leave it on the ground. He set it down on a branch and lay
on top of it.
But in the middle of the night, the two brothers were awoken by the racket of
voices at the foot of the oak tree; it was a group of thieves arguing about how to
share their loot. The youngest thief, who was losing out in the sharing and so very
upset with the others, said:
- May the Lord bring lightning and sparks fall on this oak tree!
When the mad brother heard this and without giving his brother a chance to stop
him, he grabbed the gate and threw it down. Hearing the thunder of the gate fall-
ing through the branches, the thieves thought that the curse had been fulfilled and
they ran off hastily, leaving the disputed loot behind. The two brothers climbed

Some time later, the couple found their young son carving a piece of

confidently:
- I’m making a sty to feed you in it when you turn old like grandpa.
Shocked by the boy’s idea, they took the wooden bowl off the old man

THE TW O WI SE MEN
Once there was a wise man who had hung a notice on the door of his house which read: “I
am the wisest amongst the wise”.
One day an older wise man passed by and, when he saw the notice, he challenged him to
answer the following questions: How many baskets of soil does the tallest mountain in the
world have? How much does the moon weigh? And how much is the old wise man worth?
The old wise man left, and they agreed to meet up at his house the following day. The wisest
man amongst the wise remained pondering very troubled, because he could not find the
answers. So he told his servant what had happened. The servant calmed him down and told
him that he would go in his place to see the old wise man the following day to give him the
answers.
And so he did. The following day the servant arrived wearing his master’s clothes at the old
wise man’s house, and he asked him the questions.
- Let’s see then. How many baskets of soil does the tallest mountain in the world have?
- That depends. If the basket is bigger than the mountain it’ll not even fill one up – answered
the servant.
- How much does the moon weigh?
- Well, since it’s divided in quarters, it must weight a kilo.
- And how much am I worth?
- Twenty eight coins – answered the servant decidedly.
- And so, am I not worth anything more? – asked the old wise man taken aback.
110 - Jesus Christ was sold for thirty coins, and he definitely was worth two more than you.
And that was how, thanks to his servant, the wisest man amongst the wise could continue
displaying his notice at the door of his house until the day he died.

They say that there was a very miserly shoemaker who lived in a village. Every
time someone died he asked the altar boy permission to spend the whole night
holding a vigil to the body at the foot of the altar, because according to him it was
not good to leave the body alone before burying it. However, the altar boy, suspi-
cious about the kind-heartedness of the shoemaker, hid one night under the coffin
to see what the shoemaker was up to during the vigil. He then saw the shoemaker
bring over his workbench and tools and start working in the candlelight.
The altar boy, realising how opportunistic the shoemaker was, wanted to teach
him a lesson. So he started moving the boards holding the coffin. The shoemaker,
rigid with fear, still gathered the courage to shout at the body:
- Stay still or I’ll stab you with my scissors!
But the altar boy started to shake the boards again making the candles fall down.
The shoemaker, scared to death and in the pitch black church, ran towards the
door to get out. But he was so nervous that he could not manage to put the key
in the lock and already beside himself without knowing too well what he was 111
saying, he cried:
- Help me, souls of the dead!
To which the altar boy, hardly able to hold his laughter, answered imitating the
voice of the dead:
- Here we come all together!
The following day, when the priest went in to make the arrangements for
the burial, he found the shoemaker stone dead by the door holding his key
tightly in one hand.

There was once a villager who went to see a tailor taking with him a yardstick of cloth to have

for one.
- It is enough, sir. It is – answered the tailor. – It is enough and there will also be some left
over.
- Well, if there are lots left, could you then not use some to also do one for my son?
- I can indeed! And I could even make two more.
- Well, if there’s enough for two more as well as mine, please make them for me – said the vil-
lager, and he pondered for a little while. – It is a shame that we could not make four out of it...
- Well, if you want, we could certainly make four out of it.
- In that case, there may even be enough for five...
- And for seven too – sentenced the tailor.
- Okay, then, could you make seven for me?
And the villager went away feeling very happy.
When he returned to collect them, the tailor showed him five little caps resting on the tip of
his fingers in one hand and another two on the fingers of his other hand. The villager started
complaining and swearing at him, and the tailor said to him:
- You asked me if there would be enough cloth for seven caps and there was enough for seven
caps indeed. What you did not say to me is that they had to be big...

There was once a tailor who considered himself really brave. Stitching the day
away like all tailors did until it turned dark and after having had dinner at the
house where he worked, he never wanted to stay over to sleep so that nobody
would suspect that he was afraid of the dark.
More often than not, he would go back home when it was so pitch black that
you could not see an inch ahead. One night, when he was walking along a very
narrow footpath on his way home, the tailor felt something grabbing him by his
jacket. He got so frightened that he did not dare move and even less turn his
head round. So he begged to whomever was holding him, either dead or alive,
not to hurt him, because he was not carrying anything valuable and had never
hurt anybody, and to please let him go, and for God’s sake to release him, and
on the name of the Holy Virgin that he was a good man. And this way he spent
the whole night.
113
The following morning the tailor was still there, shaking with fear and begging
for his life until, with the first light of dawn, he finally dared to look back over
his shoulder out the corner of his eye. When he realised that what was holding
him was a bramble, he grabbed his scissors and started cutting it enraged while
saying:
- There, there and there. And if you were a man, I’d do the same to you!

tchouscouroustchous,
