FAREWELL, summer. Welcome, summer! Seasons here south
of the border, under the sun, are not divided into the ‘common’ fall
where the leaves on the trees transform into yellow, red and brown,
and fall off in fear of a harsh winter; it is not where the winters are
snowy and you can go ice skating on the nearest pond; nor where
in the spring time the nature awakens in full bloom; and in the sum-
mer time you go to the beach. Rather than that, I see Baja California
Sur as an eternal summer, with the fishing season (even though we
do fish throughout the year), the rainy season, the turtle season, the
whales season, and so on. And I love it.
A life less ordinary, and completely personal(ized) to your desires.
INTRO / INTRODUCCIÓN
Where every day can be as your best dream come true. An amazing
day at the beach, a day full of adventures never seen, the most
amazing wedding day... In this issue of ESCAPES, we take you
through the beautiful traditions of Mexican weddings, and we invite
you to incorporate a piece of them into your wedding day as well.
We proudly tell the story of two most important moments in the
history of Mexico, while this year we celebrate the 200th anniversary
of the independence and 100 years of Mexican revolution. We are
excited to guide you through a beautiful ecological home in the
East Cape area of Baja Sur, Casa Shelly, which was awarded for its
sustainability and design in cooperation with the nature. We share
with you more than 7,000 years old history of corn, whose role in
Mexican culture crosses the culinary arts, and has many cultural and
religious denotations as well. And if by any chance you have fallen
in love in this beautiful place and wish to make it your home or
summer home, we have prepared a selection of some of the best
properties for sale throughout the state.

ADIOS verano. ¡Bienvenido verano! Con 365 días soleados las
estaciones aquí en el sur de la frontera, bajo el sol, no se dividen
comúnmente en el otoño: cuando las hojas en los árboles se tornan
amarillas, rojas y cafés y caen temiendo un duro invierno; no es aquí
como los inviernos en donde nieva y puedes ir a patinar sobre hielo
en el lago más cercano; o tampoco como cuando en la primavera
la naturaleza despierta en pleno resplandor y en el verano acude
uno a la playa. Más que eso, veo a Baja California Sur como un lugar
de eterno verano con actividades como la temporada de pesca
(aunque se pesque durante todo el año), la época de lluvia, la tem-
porada de desove de las tortugas y los meses cuando nos visitan las
ballenas, etc. ¡Y me encanta!
Una vida menos ordinaria y completamente personal(izada) a sus
deseos. Donde cada día puede que sea su sueño realizado. Un
increíble día en la playa, un día lleno de aventuras nunca antes vivi-
das, el más hermoso día de boda… en este ejemplar de ESCAPES le
presentamos las hermosas tradiciones de las bodas mexicanas y lo
invitamos a que las considere en el día de su boda. Orgullosamente
contamos dos de los más importantes momentos en la historia de
México, mientras que este año celebramos el bicentenario de la
Independencia de México y 100 años de la Revolución Mexicana.
Nos emociona llevarlo a través de un hermoso y ecológico hogar en
Cabo del Este, Casa Shelly, la cual fue premiada por su sustentabili-
dad y diseño en cooperación con la naturaleza. Compartimos más

THE HISTORY of the Mexican people, its culture, traditions
and heroes is very rich. Its hues denote the strength, bravery and
courage of those who have written it. This year, in 2010, Mexico is
jubilantly celebrating the Bicentennial of the Independence of Mexi-
co, as well as the First Century of the Mexican Revolution. Two events
marked by a thirst for change, written with the passion and blood of
those who fought for their ideals in pursuit of a better country.
CELEBRATING
Taken together, these events led to the formation of governments
and laws that guarantee the rights of freedom, education, health
and a job for everyone in Mexico. Let us briefly review these events:
Mexican Independence.
On the early morning of September 16th 1810, the bells at Dolores
Hidalgo rang loudly while a group of Mexican idealists summoned
their fellow Mexicans to rise against the Spaniards. This event known
as the Grito de Independencia, lead to a series of events that lasted
11 years, but at the end showed the way to Mexican Independence
from Spain.
Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla was the mastermind and leader of this
movement. With a group of intellectual Mexicans they all dreamed
of a free and independent nation. Months after the movement
began, and after several victories of the insurgent army, during a
battle the Spaniards arrested several leaders, including Hidalgo, and
executed them in 1811. Prior to their capture, Hidalgo had instructed

the priest Jose Maria Morelos to lead the movement in the south
resulting in success during the following years. By the end of 1815,
Morelos was captured, prosecuted and executed. Nonetheless, the
movement continued with the patriots Guadalupe Victoria and
Vicente Guerrero, who rallied Mexicans and Creoles (Mexican-born
but of Spanish descendants) to their cause.
Almost towards the end of these fighting years, General Agustin de
Iturbide resigned from the Spanish ranks to support the insurrecting
army, and at the beginning of 1821, met with Vicente Guerrero.
Together they proclaimed the Iguala Plan, a plan whose interest
focused on 3 important points: to establish the Independence of
Mexico from Spain, declare the Catholic religion as the sole religion
and to integrate all the social groups.
The result of this plan and of the past years of insurrection concluded
with the marching of the Trigarante Army (Army of the Three Guar-
antees) into Mexico City on September 27th 1821, the day when
Mexico was declared an independent country.

LA HISTORIA del pueblo mexicano, de su cultura, tradiciones
y personajes es muy amplia. Sus matices denotan la fuerza, coraje y
valor de aquellos que la han escrito. En 2010, México se encuentra de
manteles largos al celebrar el Bicentenario de la Independencia de
México, al igual que el Primer Siglo de la Revolución Mexicana. Dos
eventos marcados por una sed de cambio, escritos con la pasión y
sangre de quienes lucharon por sus ideales en pos de un mejor país.
En conjunto, ambos acontecimientos dieron como resultado
la formación de gobiernos y leyes que garantizan los derechos
de libertad, educación, salud y trabajo para todos. Repasemos
brevemente ambos acontecimientos:
Independencia de México.
En la madrugada del 16 de Septiembre de 1810, las campanas en
Dolores Hidalgo resonaban mientras un grupo de idealistas mexica-
nos convocaban al pueblo a levantarse en armas en contra del
gobierno español. Este hecho conocido como El Grito de Indepen-
dencia, desencadenaría una serie de acontecimientos que durarían
11 años, pero a su término, daría como resultado la independencia
de México de España.
Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla fue el principal incitador y promotor de
este movimiento. Junto con un grupo de ilustres mexicanos, soñaba
con una nación libre y autónoma. Meses después y tras varias victorias
del ejército insurgente, durante una batalla los españoles apresaron
a diversos líderes, incluyendo a Hidalgo, quienes fueron ejecutados
en 1811. Previo a su aprensión, Hidalgo instruyó al sacerdote José
María Morelos a encabezar la revolución en el sur con muy buenos
resultados durante los siguientes años. A finales de 1815, Morelos fue
capturado, enjuiciado y ejecutado. Sin embargo, la lucha continuó
con Guadalupe Victoria y Vicente Guerrero, quienes sumaron a sus
filas a mexicanos y criollos.
Casi al final del movimiento, el general Agustín de Iturbide desertó
de las filas españolas para apoyar al ejército insurgente, y a principios
de 1821, se reunió con Vicente Guerrero. En conjunto proclamaron
el Plan de Iguala cuyo interés se resumía en 3 puntos: establecer la
Independencia de México de España, declarar a la religión Católica
como única y lograr la unión de todos los grupos sociales.
El resultado de éste plan y de los últimos años de insurrección se
consumó con la entrada del Ejército Trigarante a la ciudad de México
el 27 de Septiembre de 1821, día en que se consumó la Independen-
cia de México.
Mexican Revolution.
The so longed Mexican independence brought a series of gover-
nants periods in which the nation grew, but with many gaps in the
social and cultural areas. The political atmosphere before the revolu-
tion was of a dictatorship from the Oaxacan militant Porfirio Díaz. It
is undeniable the growth Mexico had during Díaz’s leadership, but
his autocracy of over 30 years also brought the discontent of all the
classes, since the social inequality was a palpable factor.
The Mexican Revolution began on November 20th, 1910, as a
socially armed movement against the unjust social situation that
prevailed in the country. It was led by Francisco I. Madero whom
amongst other things, was looking to overthrow the dictatorship of
Diaz, the establishment of democratic elections and restore the land
of the Mexican peasants that was taken away from them during
the last years. When Diaz realized the movement was growing, he
submitted his resignation and went into exile to France, dying a few
years after.
The conflict extended during several years more, where revolution-
aries like Emiliano Zapata, Francisco Villa and Venustiano Carranza
led the Mexicans by defending their ideals, and the interests of the
people. It was in 1917 when Carranza became president of the coun-
try, but the much desired peace was not practical until after 1920. It
is since then that Mexico has walked the path of independence and
began its development as a productive and equitable nation.
The main result of the Mexican Revolution is reflected in the drafting
and enactment of the current Mexican Constitution, ratified by the
Constituent Congress on February 5th 1917, originally based on
the constitution of 1857. Its articles contain major reforms on the
social order as well as the individual rights of all Mexicans, including
freedom of association, strike, education and regulation of the
property.
The history of Mexico is ever changing, evolving and growing.
These two representative movements have marked the path to
where the nation is going. Each and every one of its participants,
good or bad, have come to reinforce the idea of a strong, active and
constantly learning society. And now, two hundred years later, we
are the leaders of Mexico through our actions and decisions. Take
the example of those who gave their lives to defend our rights and
let us build together a better present. Meanwhile, let’s all say: Viva
Mexico!
Revolución Mexicana
La anhelada independencia de México trajo consigo una serie de
mandatos con los cuales la nación creció, pero con demasiadas
carencias sociales y culturales. El ambiente político antes de la revolu-
ción era el de una dictadura a través del militar de origen oaxaqueño
Porfirio Díaz. Es imposible negar el crecimiento de México durante
su gobierno, pero su dictadura de más de 30 años también trajo
consigo el descontento de varios grupos sociales y militares, ya que
la desigualdad social era un factor palpable.
La Revolución Mexicana comenzó el 20 de Noviembre de 1910 como
un movimiento armado social en contra de la injusta situación que
prevalecía en el país. Uno de sus promotores fue Francisco I. Madero,
quien entre otras cosas buscaba el derrocamiento de la dictadura de
Díaz, el establecimiento de elecciones libres y democráticas al igual
que restituir a los campesinos mexicanos las tierras que se les fueron
arrebatadas durante el Porfiriato. Al ir perdiendo terreno, Díaz decidió
renunciar y se exilió en Francia, muriendo unos años después.
El conflicto se extendió durante varios años más, donde Emiliano
Zapata, Francisco Villa y Venustiano Carranza, dejaron su huella al
defender sus ideales y los intereses del pueblo. Fue en 1917 cuando
Carranza asumió la presidencia del país, pero la tan deseada paz no
se vio concreta sino hasta después de 1920. Es desde entonces que

México ha caminado por la vía de la independencia, a la par que
comienza su desarrollo como una nación productiva y equitativa.
El principal resultado de éste movimiento se ve plasmado con la elabo-
ración y promulgación de la actual Constitución Política de los Estados
Unidos Mexicanos, promulgada por el Congreso Constituyente el 5 de
Febrero de 1917, la cual está basada en la Constitución de 1857. Sus
artículos principales contienen reformas sobre el orden social al igual
que las garantías individuales de cada mexicano, como la libertad de
asociación, de huelga, educación y regulación de la propiedad.
La historia de México sigue cambiando, evolucionando, creciendo.
Éstos 2 movimientos tan representativos han marcado el rumbo por
el cual la nación se dirige. Cada uno de sus participantes, buenos o
malos, han reforzado la idea de un pueblo fuerte, activo y con ansias
de crecer. Y hoy, doscientos años después, nosotros somos los líderes
de México a través de nuestras acciones y decisiones. Tomemos el
ejemplo de quienes dieron su vida por defender nuestras garantías
y construyamos juntos un mejor presente. Mientras tanto digamos
todos ¡Viva México!

We loved the fact that the hotel is pet friendly, Mario’s cocktails at the Bar

DESDE su llegada hasta su partida, este acogedor boutique hotel lo
encantará con sus colores, arquitectura mexicana, estilo europeo y ami-
gable servicio. El Hotelito es un elegante y cómodo “hotelito” localizado
en el opulento y fértil suelo de palmares en dirección hacia la iglesia de la

Cada una de sus cuatro casitas se llama igual que sus colores predomi-

CASA SHELLY stands proudly in the heart of the East Cape
area of Baja California Sur, 15 minutes away from town but still far
enough to enjoy the tranquility of the nature. Its owners fell in love
with the area because of the beautiful beaches and the desert, great
surf and the close proximity to their home in San Francisco. They
love to see the stars at night and enjoy the silence, and their home
is built in a way to enable them to fully enjoy indoor-outdoor living
with low maintenance costs. Besides the great appreciation for the
nature, ecology and enjoyment to its owners, Casa Shelly received a
silver medal at the 10th Biennale of Mexican Architecture.

David, a professional photographer and surfer, lives with his family
in San Francisco. He came to Los Cabos first time back in 1989 for a
photo shoot. At the time his wife Shelly and him were not married
yet but fell in love with the area. His father was from Mexico so David
has had a romance with Mexico for a long time.

en el corazón de Cabo del Este en Baja California
Sur, está a sólo 15 minutos del centro pero lo sufi-
cientemente lejos para disfrutar de la tranquilidad
de la naturaleza. Sus dueños se enamoraron del
área debido a las hermosas playas y su desierto, de
las oportunidades para surfear y por la cercanía a
su hogar en San Francisco. Aman el disfrutar del
cielo estrellado en las noches y se regocijan con su

silencio, su hogar está construido de forma que les
permita disfrutarlo con un costo de mantenimiento
bajo. Además de su apreciación por la naturaleza y
la ecología, Casa Shelly recibió una mellada de plata
en 10mo Bienal de Arquitectura Mexicana.
David, un fotógrafo y surfista profesional, vive con
su familia en San Francisco. Vino a Los Cabos por pri-
mera vez en 1989 para una sesión de fotos. En ese
entonces, el y Shelly no se habían casado aún, pero
se enamoraron del área. Su padre era de México, por
lo que David sentía amor por éste país ya de tiempo
atrás.
Tanto a David como a Shelly les gusta surfear y apre-
cian la calidez del desierto, el clima y la vida mari-
na que encuentran al hacerlo. “Nos gusta ver a las

tortugas, ballenas y peces, no a los tiburones”, nos
cuenta David y continúa “mayormente surfeamos,
pero cuando nuestros amigos nos visitan, vamos
a playas desiertas en el área. También disfrutamos
explorar las montañas como Santiago y los peque-
ños pueblos camino a La Paz”.

Both David and Shelly like to surf and enjoy the desert climate, the
warm water and sea life they encounter while surfing. »We like seeing
turtles, whales and fish, but no sharks,« David explains, and continues
»We mostly surf, but when friends come we like to visit uncrowded
beaches up the East Cape. We also enjoy exploring the mountain
areas like Santiago, and the small towns on the way to La Paz.«

 They chose San Jose Los Cabos - East Cape area because it was close
to town but also close to more rural areas. Being from San Francisco,
they wanted to be in the country but close to town. They had their
eye on the area for years, and after they sold a condo they owned in
the corridor between Cabo and San Jose in 2005, they bought the
land to build their ideal summer home.
They trusted the design and construction of the home to a local
architect Javier Gutiérrez Toscano from ColectivoMX. They met him
and after a visit they knew he was right for the project. »He listened
to what we wanted and what we hoped for. We collaborated, we
gave him an idea of how we were going to use the house and let
him show us his ideas. We told him we liked indoor-outdoor living
and wanted our home to be low maintenance. We decided not to
give him too many restrictions or directions. His aesthetics are very
similar to ours. Our biggest challenge was working with a tight bud-
get, however Javier always came up with great economical solu-
tions,« David talks about their cooperation with Javier.
Javier Gutiérrez Toscano, an architect behind this eco-home which
received a silver medal at the 10th Biennale of Mexican Architecture,
explains the concept behind Casa Shelly: »The initial needs of David
fit the aesthetics and urban treatment we had always meant to
capture in Baja. He set some basic requirements: low consumption
of energy and water, maintenance to a minimum and economic
convenience. These requirements, added to ours - preservation of
unique vegetation, minimum pollution during the building process,

Escogieron San Jose del Cabo/Cabo del Este, por su cercanía al pueblo
pero también a todas las áreas rurales. Oriundos de San Francisco,
querían vivir en el campo, pero cerca de la ciudad. Pusieron su mirada
en el área por años, y después de que vendieron su condominio en
el corredor entre Cabo San Lucas y San José en el 2005, compraron el
terreno para su soñada casa de verano.
Le confiaron el diseño y construcción de su hogar al arquitecto local
Javier Gutiérrez Toscano, de ColectivoMX. Después de su primera re-
unión supieron que era el indicado para el proyecto. “Escuchó lo que
queríamos y lo que esperábamos. Colaboramos juntos, le dimos una
idea de cómo íbamos a usar la casa y permitimos que nos mostrara
sus ideas. Le dijimos que disfrutábamos la interacción de espacios
internos y externos y queríamos que su mantenimiento fuera sen-
cillo. Decidimos no darle demasiadas restricciones o direcciones. Su
estética es similar a la nuestra. Nuestro mayor reto era trabajar con
un presupuesto austero, y aún así, Javier siempre tuvo soluciones
económicas”, comenta David sobre su colaboración con Javier.
Javier Gutiérrez Toscano, un arquitecto detrás de éste hogar ecológi-
co, recibió una medalla de plata en el 10mo Bienal de Arquitectura
Mexicana, y explica el concepto de la casa: “Las necesidades iniciales
de David encajaban con la estética y tratamiento urbano que siempre
quisimos capturar en Baja. Nos dio algunos requerimientos básicos:
bajo consumo de energía y agua, además de mantenimiento sencillo
y económico. Estos requisitos conjugados con los nuestros (preser-
vación de vegetación endémica, contaminación mínima durante la

grounds for a project which would only use five different materials
produced in the zone – concrete, steel, wood, aluminum and glass
– as well as sun-and-wind based design.«
The friendly weather and lack of rain allow the outdoor area to
become an integrated part of daily life, which gives independence
to spaces and users. Three independent volumes and two vertical
connections, one covered with a roof and one uncovered, make up
this architectural layout.
The two-story main volume comprises a living room, a dining room,
a kitchen, a bathroom, a warehouse and a washing area on the first
floor, and the master bedroom with a private bathroom on the top
floor. The living room, which opens to the pool area and patio, dining
room and kitchen are all integrated in the same space for casual
use. On the top floor a huge parasol enlarges the habitable space

diferentes materiales producidos en la zona: concreto, acero, madera,
aluminio y vidrio, al igual que un diseño basado en el sol y el viento”.
El clima agradable y la falta de lluvia permiten que el área exterior se
integre al ritmo de vida diario, lo cual le da independencia a los espa-
cios y a los usuarios. Tres edificios independientes y dos conexiones
verticales (una cubierta y una descubierta), conforman el espacio
arquitectónico.
El edificio principal de dos pisos comprende una sala, comedor,
cocina, baño, bodega y lavandería en el primer piso, al igual que la
recámara principal con su baño en el piso superior. La sala (que se
abre hacia el patio y su alberca), comedor y cocina se integran en
el mismo espacio para el uso diario. En el piso superior una enorme
sombrilla alarga el espacio, lo cual incluye una regadera exterior con

including an outdoor shower and a sunbathing area which gives a
feel of floating over vegetation.The family’s favorite thing is spending
most of their time outside, on the pool deck in the shade or in the
living room with all the doors open. They love being outside and
inside at the same time.
Two exterior guests bedrooms are joined by a courtyard. One of
the rooms is used to retain both the swimming pool and the top
terrace, and its roof, in turn, is used as an outdoor lounge. Cross
drafts due to its location were solved with a wind chimney that
works with temperature changes. This room only received the
light filtered through the top of the trees, so they took advantage
of the swimming pool to create a window, and thus allows light in
causing a constant movement effect when it is sieved by water. This
window has been a perfect means for David and the family to take
memorable photographs under the water.

So that little maintenance would be required, the outside was
finished in polished concrete with incorporated color, which wears
out as the house in turn does and protects it from the water. The
inside consists of plaster painted in white, and the rest is wood,
polished concrete, clear glass and natural aluminum.
As part of the commitment to the ecology by the owners and archi-
tectural studio ColectivoMX, the house design includes a system
to reuse grey water for watering, solar cells for electricity, ceiling
fans instead of air conditioning, an emergency gas generator and a
swimming pool with saltwater managed through solar panels.
We are very proud of our house, says David, and we really enjoyed
the process of building it with Javier. It seems that the longer we
have it, the more we appreciate the design and livability of the
architecture. We have also been able to develop many good friend-
ships with our neighbors.

Dos recámaras exteriores para huéspedes se juntan gracias a un
patio. Una de las recámaras se usa para juntar tanto la alberca como
la terraza superior, mientras que el techo se utiliza como un área de
descanso exterior. Se instaló una chimenea de viento que trabaja con
cambios en la temperatura para las corrientes de aire cruzado que se
generan debido a la localización. Este cuarto sólo recibe la luz que
se filtra a través de los árboles, por lo que aprovecharon la alberca
para hacer una ventana, y así, permitir que la luz causara un efecto
de constante movimiento por el agua. Esta ventana ha funcionado
de maravilla para que David y su familia hayan obtenido memorables
fotografías bajo el agua.
Para que el mantenimiento fuera sencillo, el muro exterior se ter-
minó en concreto pulido con color, el cual se va desgastando al
mismo tiempo que la casa y la protege del clima. El interior consiste
en emplastado pintado de blanco, mientras que el resto es madera,
concreto pulido, vidrio y aluminio natural.
Como parte de su compromiso con la ecología, tanto de los dueños
como de ColectivoMX, el diseño de la casa incluye un sistema para
reusar el agua para el riego, celdas solares para la electricidad, abani-
cos de techo en lugar de aire acondicionado, un generador de emer-
gencia de gas y una alberca de agua salada a base de paneles solares.
“Estamos muy orgullosos de la casa y realmente disfrutamos del
proceso de construcción con Javier. Pareciera que mientras más la
tenemos, mas apreciamos su diseño y su facilidad en la arquitectura.
También, hemos podido desarrollar grandes amistades con nuestros
vecinos” finaliza David.

souls in love. In Mexico, there are specific traditions that have defined
our culture for many years, traditions that to this day, are prevalent in
our society. Mexican wedding traditions are a result of a combination
of cultures: Indigenous groups, such as the Huicholes, Tarahumaras,
Mayas, and mostly Aztecs and then the clash of Spanish influences
with the Catholic religion.
Picture-perfect locations, beautiful weather all year long, immacu-
late beaches and stunning nature make Baja California Sur as one of
the most wanted wedding-states of Mexico. In Baja Sur the Mexican
wedding traditions mix with the culture and traditions of the wed-
ding couple, which make the weddings here even more unique and
special. If you are planning your wedding in Baja California Sur, we

Mexicans have extremely strong family values and most families are
large. Having a large number of guests, for Mexicans, is extremely
important and almost unavoidable. Mexicans believe that it is
important to share their special day with all of their loved ones
and friends and even friends of friends, so that everyone can be
witness to their love and commitment. Some of the guests are
chosen as ´Godparents´ of the wedding and contribute to the

music, location, etc. This deed demonstrates affection for the couple, by
paying for these things. It is a matter of great respect to be chosen as a
godparent, as they are considered to be wise and experienced in love
and marriage and can give advice to the couple not only in the planning
process, but during their marriage and life together.
A large percentage of Mexicans wed in a traditional Catholic ceremony.
Catholic ceremonies in Mexico also assign ´godparents´, which are usually
close friends or family of the couple. These ´godparents ´ have different
responsibilities during the ceremony such as: velación (Vigil Godparents)
lazo or lasso, rings, coins, rosary & bible and lastly, the madrina or matron
of the bouquet. Each godparent has a specific job during the catholic
mass and each honor has a specific significance. Let us talk of these

Mexican traditions found during the mass of each catholic wedding.
The Velación or Vigil godparents are the most important godparents
during the mass. The godparents, preferably family members, must be
married by the Catholic Church and not divorced, as they will watch over
the new couple. They are an example to follow by; and one who can
always give advice to the new couple. They must carry two candles, one
candle each, which will be lit with the churches candle when the Priest
indicates. They also sign the churches wedding certificate as witnesses
of the marriage.
The godparents of the Lasso put the lasso around the couple’s neck in the
shape of an eight. The Lasso signifies the union of the two in an unbreak-
able bond of love and trust. At the end of the ceremony, the lasso is
removed by the godparents of the lasso or by the priest and is given to
the bride, who will cherish it as it represents that the bride is now the
owner of the grooms heart and symbolically, of their home.

durante el transcurso de su vida juntos.
Muchas bodas mexicanas se celebran bajo la tradición católica y en ellas
también se designan padrinos, estas personas normalmente son amigos
o familiares cercanos a la pareja, los cuales tienen papeles específicos
durante la ceremonia, como lo son los padrinos de velación, lazo, anillos,
arras, rosario y biblia y ramo. Cada padrino tiene un trabajo específico
durante la misa católica y cada honor tiene un significado especial.
Hablemos ahora de las tradiciones mexicanas más destacadas que se
desarrollan durante la misa católica.
Los Padrinos de Velación son de preferencia familiares y son los más
importantes. Debe ser una pareja casada por la iglesia, no divorciada, ya
que ellos velarán por el bienestar del nuevo matrimonio. La pareja que
se elija es una muestra de un matrimonio feliz, un ejemplo a seguir y
una pareja que puede otorgar consejos. Ellos llevan dos velas, una cada
uno, las cuales se encienden con el cirio pascual de la iglesia cuando el
Sacerdote lo indique. Los Padrinos de Velación son los que firman el acta
de matrimonio de la Iglesia como testigos.
Los Padrinos de Lazo envuelven el lazo alrededor de la pareja en forma de
ocho. El lazo representa simbólicamente su unión de amor y confianza.
Al final de la ceremonia el lazo es quitado por los padrinos, o bien por
el sacerdote, y se le entrega a la novia; esto representa que ahora es la
dueña del corazón y hogar del novio.
During the vow exchange, the Groom gives to the Bride 13 gold coins
which symbolize the financial responsibility for the new family; they sym-
bolize all the wealth and material possessions that the groom gives to his
bride, as a mark of his unquestionable trust and confidence in her. The
acceptance of the coins by the bride, in turn symbolizes her consent to
maintain his trust and take care of him and his belongings with utmost
devotion. Each coin is for every month of the year and the 13th is for good
luck. It is also believed that the 13th coin symbolizes the extra income a
family will have and that they will share with the poor and the needy.
During the ceremony, the bride & groom must kiss a crucifix and a bible
to show their loyalty to one and other and once the bride & groom have
proclaimed their vows of fidelity, they exchange their rings, which are
placed on the ring finger. The rings are carried by the godparents of
the rings and given to them when the Priest indicates. The rings usually
have the names of the bride and groom inscribed inside, as well as the
date of the marriage. Tradition dictates that the rings will be worn until
death do them part; they are a promise of eternal love that the couple
makes before God and before the guests the day of their wedding. An
interesting fact is that the ring finger (4th ringer on the left hand) became
such, because it is believed that the vein that runs through that finger
goes straight to the heart. The throwing of the rice at the end of the mass
now a day is substituted by flower petals or bubbles and symbolizes the
good predictions to form a family.
Mexican Brides have three bouquets. The Matron of the Bouquet carries
the 1st bouquet; this Matron must be single and signify purity, as her bou-
quet is given to the bride at the end of the ceremony so that the bride can
offer it to the Virgin of Guadalupe as a symbol of respect and purity and
to obtain the blessing of their marriage. The main bouquet is the one the
Bride holds during the wedding and the third bouquet is the one that she
tosses during the party. The bouquet is not strictly a Mexican tradition, but
it is important to mention that the flowers represent fertility of the couple
and it is believed that the foliage pushes away bad sprits that day.
The veil plays an important role during the ceremony, besides
complementing the clothing and over all look, it symbolizes the purity
and chastity of the bride. In old times the veil would be removed until

la confianza del novio, promete cuidarlo y a sus posesiones con devo-
ción y amor. Cada moneda representa un mes del año y la treceava es
de buena suerte para la pareja. La treceava moneda también simboliza
los ingresos adicionales que tendrá la familia después de 12 meses de
ingresos y que puedan compartir con los pobres y necesitados.
Durante la ceremonia los novios deberán besar un crucifijo y una biblia
para mostrar lealtad el uno con el otro y una vez que los novios han
proclamado mutuamente sus votos de fidelidad, se colocarán uno al
otro un anillo. Éstos llevan grabado en su interior los nombres y la fecha
de la ceremonia y son entregados por los padrinos de anillos cuando el
Sacerdote lo indique. Dicta la tradición que los anillos serán llevados hasta
que la muerte los separe y son un recordatorio de la promesa de amor
eterno que hace la pareja ante Dios y ante los hombres el día de su boda.
El anillo se coloca en el dedo anular izquierdo porque antiguamente se
creía que este dedo tiene una conexión directa con el corazón a través
de una vena. Lanzar arroz al final de la misa, que actualmente puede ser
sustituido por pétalos o burbujas, simboliza los buenos augurios para
formar una familia.
La novia en Mexico tiene tres ramos de los cuales uno lo carga la madrina
BODAS
de ramo y al término de la misa, se lo otorga a la novia. Ella lo ofrece a
la Virgen de Guadalupe como símbolo de respecto y pureza para así,
obtener una bendición para su matrimonio. El ramo principal es el que
la novia sostiene durante la boda y el tercero es el que avienta en la
recepción. El ramo de novia no es una tradición estrictamente mexicana,
aunque cabe mencionar que las flores representan la fertilidad de la
pareja y se cree que el follaje aleja los malos espíritus ese día.
El velo también juega un rol importante en la ceremonia: además de
complementar la indumentaria, simboliza la pureza y castidad de la novia.
En épocas antiguas se podía retirar hasta que la celebración terminaba,
así el novio al besar a la novia, recibía su pureza.

receive her purity.
In terms of music, the traditional Mariachis have to be part of the party!
The Mariachis can start during the church or at the end of the mass or
even during the party to mark the start or finish of the reception. During
the reception, in some Mexican weddings, specifically in small towns of
Mexico, the bride dances around the guest and each guest places on her
dress or veil bills of money with pins. This wishes the happy couple good
luck financially as well as helping the bride & groom have some extra
spending money for their honeymoon. Additionally, the dance called
´Vibora de la Mar´ is danced where the bride & groom lead all the guests
to dance behind them like a train.
Mexican weddings are so long, that many times the party goes until
sunrise, so usually a second dinner is served through the night called

a ´tornaboda´ and consists of snacks or plated traditional meals usually
spicy like tamales, tacos or chilaquiles.

En cuestiones de música ¡Los tradicionales Mariachis no pueden faltar!
La música de los Mariachis puede comenzar desde la iglesia, al término
de la ceremonia, durante la fiesta o para marcar el inicio o término de
la recepción. Durante la recepción de algunas bodas tradicionales mexi-
canas, específicamente en pueblos chicos de la república, la novia baila
alrededor de los invitados los cuales le colocan en el velo billetes con
alfileres, esto es para desearle buena suerte a la pareja, así como recaudar
dinero para la luna de miel. Otra cosa peculiar durante las recepciones
es el baile de una canción llamada “Víbora de la Mar” donde tanto el
novio como la novia bailan en la pista de baile haciendo partícipes a los
invitados.
Las fiestas en las bodas mexicanas son tan largas, muchas veces hasta

 ANCIENT legend tells us
that in the beginning, the Aztec
people mainly subsisted upon
roots and animals. They didn’t
understand the significance
of corn because it was hidden
behind the mountains. The gods
tried to open a road to the source
of the corn but were unsuccess-
ful. The god Quetzalcoatl decided
to transform himself into a black
ant and accompanied by a red ant,
marched towards the mountains.
Upon their return, they brought
grains of corn to the people who
greeted them with great enthusiasm.
The history of corn in Mexico goes back
over 7000 years near the Teotihuacan valley, where its
earliest trace has been discovered. Being one of the first
grains domesticated by humans, it is believed that corn
production is the beginning of agriculture in the region.
Since this early beginning, the Mexican peasant has played a
key part in the development of different breeds of local corn,
which have been adapted to all types of soil and climate. By
the process of selecting the best seeds, the cultivation of the crop
spread rapidly across America and eventually all around the world.
Due to the diversity of soil and crop types, there are currently more
than 300 varieties of corn in the world.
Its golden grains represent more than simply food. They are the fer-
vent and silent witness of the evolution of Mexican culture during
the last centuries, and are an important element of pre-Columbian
mythology, as described by the Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the
Mayan culture: “… of yellow corn and white corn was made his flesh,
from corn dough were made the arms and legs of men. Only corn dough
went into the flesh of our fathers, the four men who were created.
It is no wonder then to believe that corns’ role in Mexican culture
crosses the culinary arts. Corn has cultural and religious denotations
that nowadays are still of great importance in smaller communities.
There are six basic types of corn: sweet corn (it is the most com-
monly used in the preparation of food because of its tender and
sweet grains), dent corn (type most frequently grown for grain and
silage), waxy corn (preferred for cornstarch), flour corn (grains have
a high starch content that distinguishes it for its usage in corn flour),
pop corn (famous for preparing popcorn because the grains tend to
burst under heat) and flint corn (each kernel is enclosed in a husk
of its own, and is one of the oldest type cultivated). From these
six types, there are many more species, each one bearing its own
characteristics. Just in Mexico, there are at least 65 different types
of corn!
Within Mexican gastronomy you can find a wide variety of food and
dishes prepared with corn, some of them are: corn tortilla, atole,
chalupas, chilaquiles, enchiladas, gorditas, huaraches, memelitas,
pinole, pozole, menudo, sopes, tlacoyos, quesadillas, tamales… the
list is endless, just as are the many uses of corn.
CUENTA la leyenda que en el principio, el pueblo azteca se
alimentaba de raíces y animales que cazaban. No conocían el maíz,
ya que estaba escondido tras las montañas. Los dioses intentaron
abrir camino a base de fuerza pero no pudieron, es por ello que el
dios Quetzalcóatl decidió transformarse en hormiga negra y acom-
pañado de una hormiga roja, emprendió el arduo viaje a través de
las montañas. A su regreso, trajo consigo granos de maíz, el cual fue
recibido por su pueblo con gran júbilo.
La historia del maíz en México data a más de 7000 años atrás, cerca
del valle de Teotihuacán donde se han encontrado sus vestigios más
antiguos. Siendo un de los primeros cereales domesticados por el
hombre, se cree que su producción es el inicio de la agricultura en la
región. Desde ese entonces, el campesino mexicano ha jugado una
parte fundamental en el desarrollo de más de diversas razas de gra-
nos de maíz de forma local, los cuales han ido adaptándose a todo
tipo de suelo y clima a través de la selección de las mejores semillas,
extendiéndose rápidamente a toda América y el resto del mundo.
Gracias a la diversidad de suelos y tipos de cosecha, actualmente
existen más de 300 variedades de maíz en el mundo.
Sus dorados granos representan más que un alimento, son el fer-
viente testigo silencioso de la evolución de la cultura mexicana

durante los últimos siglos, al igual que un elemento importante de
la mitología prehispánica, tal y como lo describe el Popol Vuh, libro
sagrado de los mayas: “…de maíz amarillo y de maíz blanco se hizo su
carne; de masa de maíz se hicieron los brazos y piernas del hombre. Úni-
camente masa de maíz entró en la carne de nuestros padres, los cuatro
hombres que fueron creados”.
No es extraño entonces pensar que su papel en la cultura mexicana
traspasa el arte culinario, sino tiene denotaciones cul-
turales y religiosas que hoy en día siguen siendo de
gran relevancia en las pequeñas comunidades.
Existen 6 tipos básicos de maíz: dulce (es el más
demandado para la preparación de los alimentos
debido a sus granos tiernos y jóvenes), dentado
(tipo de maíz cultivado más comúnmente para
grano y ensilaje), duro (preferido para realizar
fécula de maíz o maicena), blando o harinoso
(sus granos tienen gran contenido de almidón,
característica que lo distingue al ser el más

utilizado en la elaboración de harina de maíz),
reventado (famoso para hacer palomitas de
maíz, ya que sus granos tienden a reventar bajo
el calor) y envainado (cada grano está encerrado
en una cascarilla propia, además de ser de
los mas antiguamente cultivados). De ahí se
derivan varias especies más, teniendo cada una
características especiales ¡Tan sólo en México
existen al menos 65 tipos diferentes de maíz!
Dentro de la gastronomía mexicana se puede
encontrar una gran variedad de alimentos que
contienen maíz, algunos de los cuales son:
tortilla, atole, chalupas, chilaquiles, enchiladas,
gorditas, huaraches, memelitas, pinole, pozole,
menudo, sopes, tlacoyos, tostadas, quesadillas,
tamales… la lista es infinita, tal y como son los
usos del maíz.

 Corn in the rest of the world.
Its introduction to Europe was in the early sixteenth century when
Christopher Columbus returned from America. It was widely
accepted because of its resemblance to regional cereals (such as
wheat and sorghum). It wasn’t until the early nineteenth century,
when production and consumption increased due to its various
uses in industry, such as alcoholic beverages, food sweeteners and
even fuel that the grain became widely popular.
Corn is currently the most widely produced cereal in the
world, surpassing rice and wheat. Its consumption has
three types of applications: food, fodder and raw materials
for industry. Did you know that if you set the global pro-
duction of corn in regular trucks, they would circumvent
the world five times?
The following are just a few characteristics from corn:
• Its name, maize, has its scientific origin name in the
word zea mays and is indigenous from the Indian-Ca-
ribbean word mahís and means “that which sustains
life”. English speaking countries know it as corn.
• Ancient Mexican cultures knew it as elotl when its
cob was tender and tlaolli when the grain ripens.
• Corn is an ideal food for children and athletes. It is

easily digested because of its high carbohydrate con-
tent.
• Because it has lots of fiber, corn helps the digestion
process, fights constipation and reduces cholesterol.
• Corn is a great source of magnesium, vitamins B1,
B3 & B9, therefore, nutritionally speaking it is a well
balanced food. Because it is also a source of starch,
immoderate consumption causes weight gain.
• The silks of the cob can be boiled and drank as tea to
battle hypertension, fluid retention and urinary tract
infections.
There is no doubt that this seemingly simple food is truly
a treasure: just like gold to a king’s coffers, its complete
and balanced nutrition is of immeasurable value to the
human being.
El maíz en el resto del mundo.
Su introducción a Europa fue a principios del siglo XVI cuando
Colón regresó de América. Tuvo una buena aceptación
debido a su semejanza con cereales regionales (como el
trigo y sorgo), pero fue hasta principios del siglo XIX donde
su producción y consumo se incrementó por sus diferentes
usos en la industria, como la elaboración de bebidas
alcohólicas, edulcorantes alimenticios y combustible.
Actualmente, es el cereal de mayor producción en todo el
mundo, superando al arroz y al trigo. Su consumo tiene 3
tipos de aplicaciones: alimento, forraje y materia prima para
la industria, siendo el primero el mayor conocido. ¿Sabías que
si se montara la producción mundial de maíz en camiones de
carga, éstos darían 5 vueltas completas a la tierra?
Algunas características sobre el maíz:
• Su nombre científico es zea mays, mientras que el origen de
la palabra maíz proviene de la palabra india-caribeña mahís y
significa “lo que sustenta la vida”.
• En las antiguas culturas mexicanas se le conocía como elotl
cuando su mazorca estaba tierna, y tlaolli cuando el grano
maduraba.
• El maíz es un alimento ideal para niños y deportistas gracias a
ser de fácil digestión debido a su alto contenido de hidratos de
carbono.
• Al contener gran cantidad de fibras, ayuda al proceso de la
digestión, combate el estreñimiento y reduce el colesterol.
• Es una gran fuente de magnesio, vitaminas B1, B3 y B9, por lo que
nutricionalmente hablando es muy equilibrado. Debido a que
también es una fuente de almidón, su consumo inmoderado
será el causante en el aumento de peso.
• Las barbas de la mazorca pueden utilizarse en infusiones para
combatir la hipertensión, retención de líquidos y las infecciones
urinarias.
No cabe duda de que este alimento de apariencia sencilla es
verdaderamente un tesoro: cual oro en las arcas de los reyes, la calidad
energética y alimenticia del maíz es de valor inconmensurable para el
ser humano.

TIPS FOR THE NEW HOME DESIGNERS!
¡TIPS PARA LOS NUEVOS DISEÑADORES DE CASAS!
WHEN we are about to design/build our dream home, we have to always
remember where we are. Baja California Sur is a territory which has hot dry
weather, which - rather than being a burden for a project - is an advantage.
Hot dry weather is the birthplace of some of the most important architec-
tonic traditions of humanity, which Mexican culture inherited (via the Spanish
culture): the Islamic architecture.
To adapt to this weather, it is necessary to optimize natural ventilations and
avoid dust. Inner patios, vegetation, proper orientations, proper roof shapes
and right kind of windows are some of the main elements that will allow us to
have a healthy and intelligent home design.
“The house responds to the weather and not the weather to the house”
COLUMN
In this occasion I will take the liberty of giving you some suggestions that you
might want to consider when thinking/designing your dream home in Baja
Sur. Taking in consideration different natural elements and local geographical
conditions, our starting basic design guidelines for any project in the area
should be:
• The use of thick walls, which delay the penetration of the heat during the
day, and the cold at night.
• Tilted roofs with small slope but still steep enough to deflect effectively sun
rays and heat.
• The use of natural and local materials.
• Windows that will allow the flow of air and at the same time can block
sunlight and dust.
• The use of inner patios to help refresh the house and its rooms.
• We need to be able to configure the building in a way that volumes don’t
generate unnecessary heat for its neighboring buildings, avoiding exces-
sive heat caused by solar rays.
• Generating an irregular facade will allow it to give shade to itself, and pre-

vent it to absorb extra heat.
• The use of trees and/or vegetation helps to shade the facades and protect
surfaces from sun rays. Roofs in different shapes and slopes have irregular
energy reflections, and overhangs provide shade to lower volumes and/or
open areas. The use of pergolas and shades will be important to comple-
ment the exterior areas.
• Vaults and domes are also very effective to isolate spaces from heat and to
liberate hot air from their top.
• Windows: to its exteriors they need to take in consideration the amount of
dust and light, protecting the facades from this; openings to interior gar-
dens and patios should be bigger than the ones to the exteriors to allow
fresh wind to circulate through them freely.
Let’s not forget the wind! In hot dry areas like Baja Sur we need to keep
and canalize fresh air and wind, preventing it to slide over the building with-
out penetrating into the rooms. Wind needs to be funnel making it refresh
facades, roofs, and interiors.
There is plenty of old eco-techniques and sustainability principles which are
inexpensive and almost intuitive but give us better quality of life and better
(healthier) homes; I hope these recommendations and tips help you to make
a better design in your dream home!

CUANDO estemos por diseñar nuestra casa soñada, siempre debemos
recordar donde nos ubicamos. Baja California Sur es un territorio con clima
seco y húmedo, el cual en lugar de ser una carga para un proyecto, es una ven-
taja. Un clima seco y húmedo es donde nacen algunas de las más importantes
tradiciones arquitectónicas de la humanidad, de la cual la cultura mexicana
heredó a través de la cultura española, elementos de la arquitectura islámica.
Para adaptarnos a éste clima es necesario optimizar las ventilaciones naturales
y evitar el polvo. Patios internos, vegetación, buena orientación y formas
correctas en los techos y ventanas son algunos de los elementos principales
que permitirán un diseño inteligente y saludable.
“La casa responde al clima y no el clima a la casa”
En esta ocasión me tomaré la libertad de darles algunas sugerencias que
pudieran considerar cuando diseñen su casa ideal en el sur de Baja. Tomando
en consideración diferentes elementos naturales y las condiciones geográficas
locales, nuestras pautas de diseño básico para cualquier proyecto en el área
deben ser:
• El uso de muros gruesos, los cuales retrasan la penetración del calor duran-
te el día y el frío por la noche.
• Techos ligeramente inclinados, pero lo suficientemente empinados, para
desviar efectivamente los rayos del sol y el calor.
• El uso de materiales locales y naturales.
• Ventanas que permitan el flujo de aire e impidan el paso de rayos solares y
el polvo.
• El uso de patios internos que ayuden a refrescar la casa y sus habitaciones.
• Es necesario configurar la construcción de forma que su volumen no genere
calor innecesario para los vecinos, evitando el calor excesivo causado por el
reflejo de los rayos solares.
• Diseñar una fachada irregular le permitirá que su misma sombra la proteja
y le impida absorber más calor.
• El uso de árboles y/o vegetación ayuda a sombrear las fachadas y proteger
las superficies de los rayos solares. Los techos en diferentes formas e incli-
naciones reflejan irregularmente la energía, y los techos voladizos propor-
cionan sombra a menor volumen y/o en áreas abiertas. El uso de pérgolas
y sombras será importante para complementar los espacios exteriores.
• Las bóvedas y domos también son efectivos para aislar los espacios del
calor y para liberar el aire caliente de su punta.
• Ventanas al exterior: necesitan considerar la cantidad de polvo y luz que
reciben para proteger las fachadas; al interior (patios y jardines): deben ser
más grandes que las exteriores para que el aire fresco circule por ellas libre-
mente.
¡No olvidemos el viento! En áreas cálidas y húmedas como el sur de Baja,
necesitamos contener y canalizar el viento y el aire fresco, evitando que rodee
la casa sin que entre a las habitaciones. El viento necesita canalizarse para
refrescar la fachada, los techos y los interiores.
Hay bastantes técnicas ecológicas tradicionales, además de principios sus-
tentables, que son baratas e intuitivas y facilitan una mejor calidad de vida
además de hogares más saludables. ¡Espero que éstas recomendaciones y
tips le ayuden a mejorar el diseño de su casa ideal!
Natural ventilations are the result of the use of breeze and natural wind
by the orientation and design of windows, wall openings and roofs, as
also the placement of vegetation selected for this means. We can have
different ways to “re-direct” the winds on the site through the construction.
For doing that we might want to take in consideration the following:
1. With high windows, the wind crosses but doesn’t refresh the space. /
Con ventanas altas el viento cruza, pero no refresca el espacio.
3. With attached shade, overhangs wind goes up and does not refresh.
/ Con sombras voladizas y adjuntas, el viento va para arriba pero no
refresca.
5. Openings on the side of the roof that the wind blows, will only make
the heat that has reflected on the roof to come in. / Espacios abiertos
en los techos, por el lado en que entra el viento, sólo hará que el calor
reflejado en el techo baje a la habitación.
7. If we have a wind direction that is high and openings that are low, the
wind cannot refresh the space. / Si el viento ingresa por una entrada alta
y es arrojado por una salida baja, no refrescará el espacio.
La ventilación natural es el resultado del uso de la brisa y viento a través
de la orientación y diseño de ventanas, aperturas en la pared y techos,
