iones positivos y electrones libres; el movimiento de las cargas en esa mezcla se debe
principalmente al movimiento de los electrones. Ese gas ionizado se llama plasma.
Aunque un rayo nos presenta la prueba ms espectacular de la actividad elctrica en
una tormenta elctrica, la mayor parte de la actividad en esas tormentas es silenciosa y
casi imperceptible, en forma de una descarga en corona o efecto corona. La carga en
el terreno, atrada hacia la carga opuesta en una nube de tormenta, se concentra en
todas las puntas, como son las de las hojas de los rboles. La concentracin de la carga
causa una ionizacin continua, casi imperceptible, del aire cerca de las puntas. En ese
caso, la carga del terreno puede pasar a este aire ionizado y fluir hacia la nube de tormenta, cuya carga elctrica se neutraliza, en forma gradual. A esta clase de ionizacin
del aire se le llama descarga en corona, porque a veces se le puede ver como un halo
brillante que rodea el objeto puntiagudo (vase la figura 22.14).
Los pararrayos, inventados por Benjamn Franklin, tenan por objeto, al principio,
inhibir los rayos al facilitar la descarga en corona. Sin embargo, el tradicional pararrayos, con una sola punta afilada, no puede producir una cantidad suficiente de descarga
en corona; su ventaja principal es conducir la carga elctrica de un rayo hasta el suelo,

Este captulo concluir con una breve descripcin de dos formas distintas en las
que puede cargarse un cuerpo. La primera, la electrificacin por friccin, se mencion
ya en la introduccin. La segunda, carga por induccin, es una aplicacin sencilla de la
fuerza de Coulomb, donde se usan las propiedades de un conductor. Se describirn una

La electrificacin por friccin es muy comn. Es fcil acumular carga elctrica en
una barra de vidrio, slo frotndola con una tela de seda. La seda adquiere carga negativa y la barra de vidrio se carga positivamente; el movimiento de friccin entre las
superficies de la seda y el vidrio arranca las cargas de una de ellas, y las hace pasar a la
otra; sin embargo, el mecanismo detallado no se ha comprendido bien. Se cree que lo
que suele presentarse es una transferencia de iones de una superficie a la otra. Los contaminantes que residen en las superficies que se frotan tienen un papel fundamental en
la electrificacin por friccin. Si se frota el vidrio con un trozo de tela de seda u otro
material textil absolutamente limpio, el vidrio se carga negativamente, y no positivamente. Parece que la tela ordinaria de seda tiene una cantidad tan grande de polvo en
su superficie, que el proceso de carga est dominado por el polvo, y no por la seda. Incluso el aire funciona como contaminante en algunas superficies; por ejemplo, con experimentos cuidadosos sobre el frotamiento de platino con seda se demuestra que en el
vaco, el platino se carga negativamente, pero en el aire se carga positivamente.

Una segunda forma, muy diferente, de cargar un objeto se llama carga por induccin. Una vez que se acumula algo de carga, positiva, en una barra de vidrio, se podrn
producir cargas en otros cuerpos por el proceso de induccin, como sigue: primero, se
acerca la barra de vidrio a un cuerpo metlico sostenido en un pedestal aislante (vase
la figura 22.16a). La carga positiva de la barra atraer electrones libres al lado cercano
del cuerpo, dejando un dficit de electrones libres en el lado alejado; entonces el lado
cercano adquirir una carga negativa, y el lado lejano una carga positiva. Si a continuacin se conecta el lado lejano a tierra, con un conductor, los electrones llegarn desde la
