Presentation
We are honored and pleased to present the work Passion for Light as part of Grupo Len
Jimenes Centennial Collection.
In this book the artist photographer delivers his love for nature, his profound faith and his
unique vision of creation in images and texts of incomparable beauty.
Domingo Batista, more than making us witnesses to his experiences, proposes a form of seeing
everything permanently offered if we open the eyes of the soul. If we engage ourselves in the

infinite exercise of learning to see from the heart and from all the senses, from illusion and
from hope. He knows and reflects, that the look filled by the environment is the same that
harbors peace and love on reality to intimately re-dimension it.
This ambulant master dares to live the magic of apprehending the essence of landscapes, of
people, animals, and things; and reciprocates by illuminating them with spiritual light.
He extends thus an invitation to receive, in all its greatness, the splendor of life that impels and
inspires, the energy and brightness beyond the materialism of objects, to appreciate the most
noble beauty.
Grupo Len Jimenes joyfully joins this invitation convinced of how much art can contribute
to the quality of life of people, of its transcendence for the achievement of a better nation.

Foreword
people, animals, water and other natural elements which help him to express his poetic realism.
In his style, Domingo Batista presents a new picture of the Dominican country in this portfolio.
Turbulently cloudy skies, illuminated foregrounds, the immensity of landscapes, characters
Domingo Batista is a woodsman by birth who circumstantially lives amidst city noise.
Whenever possible, he returns to the forest and the plains, camera in hand, acknowledging the
call of his instincts, and there all his being and his personality vibrate intensely surrounded by
his natural environment. His visual thirst, his physical-mental strength and his acute perception
carry him to capture his themes with special interpretative power.
Oddly, Domingo Batista had to develop in the city the abilities suitable for a hunter to face
the risks of urban life. There he learned to defend himself from the wolf of man, which,
according to Hobbes, is man himself. The experiences of his youth crudely showed him the
abundant ruthlessness and little nobility of human society. This awareness process gradually led
him to the creative self exile in which he lives since then, capturing images of Dominican
people and land, to then release them among those who love life.
Domingo Batista has walked along thirty-three years with this passion for light, disclosing
his takes immersed in the light of the sun and of the soul as considered by Pedro Mir, the
National Poet.
His growing faith in God and love for universal poetry have contributed to define the conceptual basis of his work until reaching complete maturity. His work integrates lyrical texts
and sensibly captured photographic images to produce suggestive imprints of the luminous
national light. Five individual and two co-authored books have been literally brought to light
in this manner.
This book, Passion for Light, is the result of the last eight years of work of this genial master
of the lens. In addition to the photographs of his country, Domingo Batista offers, for the first
time, a group of images of the Native Americans landscape in the United States. Thus, this
extraordinary publication contains two books in one: a Portfolio of the Dominican land and
a Portfolio of the North American land.
The first part of this work, written in Spanish and English, contains one hundred images
accompanied by texts of its author, biblical verses and passionate strophes by Dominican poets
looking directly into the camera, the gleams of light pursuing the goats of the frontier, the
extreme angles, the enigmatic photography-radiography, water running and jumping among
rocks, the presence of rain, the morning dew veil, the symbols of human labor, all these and
more reveal the authors vision of those daily aspects apparently imperceptible.
The production of the second portfolio, containing forty-eight photographs, is defined by his
love for the lands and native tribes of North America and his admiration for the national parks
where he passionately seeks the behavior of light in other geographic latitudes.
The landscapes are of places where nature is exhibited in a continental dimension very different
from our island landscape. The author wisely selects a series of texts by representatives of these
environments original population to remember the forms of life of these tribes in perfect
harmony with their habitat. He also inserts fragments of poetry by Walt Whitman and thoughts
by writer Henry David Thoreau, with who he shares their perceptional philosophy.
Unquestionably this book is a great example of what the passion of an artist can do when he
dedicates all his inner strength to the search that founds an original creation. The transcendent
character in Domingo Batistas work, which makes him worthy of the position held within
contemporary cultural activities, is thus reaffirmed.
The intense visual dialogue perceived from beginning to end allows us to understand why
Domingo Batista has achieved national and international acknowledgement as a great artist of
photography. Searching for solar light, Domingo found his souls light and now both are one
beam that lives in his eyes transformed into in his immense passion.
This book enhances the Centennial Collection of Grupo Len Jimenes. Surely its inclusion in
this large editorial series was determined to act as a joyous invitation to continue walking along
those paths... be it by the sea side at dusk, or through the fog with feet moistened by dew,
while sharing anecdotes, silences and reflections, observing the millenary vibration of light and
perceiving the harmony of Creation from which lessons of love and wisdom derive.

This wonderful portfolio is introduced by an image of rural workers against the light laboring
in a green tobacco field at the Cibao Region. Using adequate doses of patience, experience
and previsualization capacity, the artist photographer applies various techniques, noticeably
long exposition, to achieve the sense of movement and smoothness in some of his subjects:
