Bienvenidos una vez ms a Eurostars Hotels. El Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires abre una de las exposiciones de imgenes ms completa de la trayectoria del fotgrafo de moda peruano Mario Testino. La muestra incluye no solo fotografas de moda y publicidad, sino tambin imgenes autobiogrficas. As, podr verse una amplia muestra de sus producciones para revistas icnicas como Vogue y Vanity Fair o para firmas como Gucci y Versace. Esta exposicin cuenta con una importante serie de dibujos y acuarelas adquiridas por el filntropo armenio nacionalizado britnico Calouste Gulbenkian que se mostrar por primera vez al pblico en general. Algunas de las piezas s han formado parte de muestras anteriores, pero nunca antes se haban agrupado en una exposicin propia que tienen como hilo conductor las tcnicas del dibujo y la acuarela. Las obras trazan un extenso recorrido, desde el siglo XVI hasta el XX, y entre ellas se encuentran trabajos de Durero, Watteau, Ruisdael, Boucher, Fragonard, Guardi, Turner o Millet, entre otros. El mar en Pars, hace 45 millones de aos
Las Catacumbas de Pars albergan vestigios de una poca en que el rea geogrfica que ocupa la ciudad estaba sumergida bajo el mar, hace al menos 45 millones de aos. La exposicin ofrece al visitante la visin de un valioso patrimonio geolgico a la vez que explica cmo se form el subsuelo parisino, de ah que resulte especialmente recomendable para todos aquellos interesados en la geologa. La seccin geolgica del terreno observada en las catacumbas sirvi como referente internacional para definir un intervalo de tiempo en la historia de la Tierra situado entre 49 y 40 millones de aos antes de nuestra era. Esta edad geolgica es denominada Luteciense en referencia a Lutecia, el nombre romano de la capital francesa antes de que se convirtiera en Pars. The sea in Paris, 45 million years ago The Catacombs of Paris harbour remains of an era when the geographical area occupied by the city was submerged beneath the sea, at least 45 million years ago. This exhibition offers visitors the vision of a valuable geological heritage while, at the same time it explains how the Paris subsoil was formed, making it highly recommendable for all those who are interested in geology. The

geological cross-section of the strata in the Catacombs served as an international reference for defining a period of time in the history of the Earth between 49 and 40 million years before our era. This era is denominated Luteciense in reference to Lutecia, the Roman name of the French capital before it became Paris.

Qu pasa cuando la pelcula se acaba?, qu sucede cuando empezar es un laberinto de perdicin?, quin vende las guas tursticas del desamparo, de la niebla, de la noche sentimental? Sus mujeres anfibias traslucen la palidez enfermiza de unos sentimientos arrebatadores, profundos y desencajados. Ilustradora de rasgos inquietantes por lo plcido de su desventura y relatora de los avatares que crucifican nuestros despechos. En realidad, un maravilloso cuento para adultos sin norte. Literature. I think that the expectations that the title indicates resume well the tales by this writer from Valencia. What do to when the film ends? What happens when to begin is a labyrinth of undoing? El irlands nos tiene acostumbrados a novelas de gnero negro de una intensidad emocional poco usada; pero atreverse con una transustanciacin del maestro Raymond Chandler, y comenzar su novela como si fuese El sueo eterno (Lauren Bacall mediante) es, como poco, arriesgado; hacerlo bien casi resulta sospechoso, y terminar el libro con la sensacin de revivir la desidia cida del detective Philip Marlowe es ya alcoholemia esttica. No solo se lee con gusto, sino que satisface a cualquier vago receloso, lo que pudiera ser mi caso. Literature. This Irishman has accustomed us to thrillers of a littlefound emotional intensity; but to dare to use a trans-substantiation of maestro Raymond Chandler and to begin his novel as though it were The Big Sleep (Lauren Bacall permitting) is, to say the least, risky; to do it well is almost suspicious and to finish the book with the feeling of reliving the caustic idleness of detective Philip Marlowe is static alcohol intoxication. Si, por una parte, produce un miedo aterrador, de una malvada psicologa muy perversa, por otro, es un compendio de saberes que alcanzan desde la filosofa a la historia natural, de la psicologa a la fontanera y, lo que an es ms, se construye a s mismo como la larva en la crislida; se fagocita y se crece en un laberinto de acciones que preferira no dejar para una lectura nocturna. Si Stephen King dice que es bueno, es que es bueno.

Music. Estos tos se lo pasan bomba tocando, y se nota. Con un pop-rock poderoso en los riffs de guitarra, contundente en la batera y sensual en las voces, arrancan pulsaciones al corazn ms maltrecho, si quedara alguno que no lo fuera. Son deslenguados sin perdn y un tanto cnicos en sus salmos, pero quin no hace lo mismo cuando los bares cierran. Msica. Pop delicado y sugestivo, de fiesta privada en el porsche roto de un amigo. Lejanas esencias de folk americano en las baladas animosas y jvenes de este grupo de Getxo. Levedad de sal en las guitarras que avanzan sin descanso los compases divertidos, como si siempre fuera una noche de verano. Tienen un don especial para que los combinados no se excedan ni con el vodka ni con el rouge de las mujeres.

Msica. Con un sonido ronco y evocador de ensueos trasnochados, los rumores afogados de la viola de gamba nos trasnochan a un tiempo rococ de intrigas palaciegas; a un lujo decadente con Madame de Pompadour en su boudoir perfumado de placeres ocultos; a un pas estragado por las adelfas dormidas. La tersura cadenciosa del viologambista sevillano revive el Barroco galante con aromas de fiesta flamenca. Ese paraso en ruinas es hoy, casi, todo nuestro paraso. Music. With hoarse, evocative sounds of outmoded fantasies, the drowned rumours of the viola transport us to the rococo era of palace intrigues: to a decadent luxury with Madame de Pompadour in her boudoir, perfumed with hidden pleasures, to a country corrupted by sleeping oleander bushes. The melodious terseness of this Seville viola player revives the gallant Baroque with aromas of flamingo festivities. This paradise in ruins is nowadays, almost, all the paradise we have left.

Literature. Possibly the strangest book I have read in all my life. If, on the one hand, it produces terrific fear, of a very perverse, psychological nature, on the other it is a compendium of knowledge that covers from philosophy to natural history, from psychology to plumbing and, what is more, it builds itself like a larva in a chrysalis; it absorbs itself and it grows in a labyrinth of actions that I would rather not leave for night-time reading. If Stephen King says it is good, then it is good.

The Righ Ons. Volcano

Music. These guys have a whale of a time playing, and it shows. With a powerful pop-rock in the guitar riffs, convincing battery and sensual singing, they pluck out heart beats from the most battered of hearts, if any that are not still remain. They are blatantly foul-mouthed and a bit cynical in their psalms, but who does not do the same thing when the bars close.

The Fakeband. Shinning on everyone

Music. Delicate, attractive pop music, for a private party in the red Porsche of a friend. Distant essences of American folk music in the lively, young ballads by this group from Getxo. The lightness of salt in the guitars that advance unceasingly in the entertaining beats, as though it were always a summer night. They have a special gift so that the drinks never have too much vodka or the women too much rouge.

Marty Stuart. The Gospel Songs of Marty Stuart

Msica. Algo anglico tiene la msica country que la aproxima al rezo del blues sureo, y algo perverso se oculta en la melancola de un tiempo como el nuestro. Marty Stuart es un viejo sabio y un clsico de la guitarra, compaero por muchas cantinas del Johnny Cash legendario. Canciones de traicin, desamor, deseos incumplidos y promesas rotas; canciones para susurrar en las noches de hoguera, canciones que relatan un pasado que se ha vuelto nuestro peor presente. Music. Country music has something angelical about it that brings it close to the prayers of southern blues and something perverse that is concealed in the melancholy of a time like ours. Marty Stuart is a wise old man and a guitar classic, a companion of the legendary Johnny Cash in many canteen crawls. Songs of betrayal, lost love, unfulfilled desires and broken promises; songs to murmur in nights around the fire, songs that that tell of a past which has become our worst present.

To see Gravity is to be able to get an idea of the course that the cinema could take in the decades to come, where the digital image, with its hyper-realistic ability, exhibits how much pretence there is in reality. Nowadays there are few experiences in movies as radically new as there are in the first zero gravity 20 minutes, through the most hypnotic sequence of images of the past few years.

Three weddings too many

Ruth (Inma Cuesta), a young investigator, goes to the weddings of her three ex fiancs, one after the other, in less than a month, a circumstance which, as could be expected, leads her to posing herself over and over again the unavoidable question: why did none of them want to become part of my life? Will I ever be able to find Mr. Right?

Una renovada (o no tanto) reflexin sobre la historia de la esclavitud en EE UU

Los aos en que Estados Unidos mantuvo a los negros en rgimen de esclavitud constituyen una de las pocas histricas que ms producciones audiovisuales (para cine y televisin) ha generado. El director Steve McQueen retoma este referente histrico para construir una pelcula que, si bien camina en ocasiones por lugares comunes, introduce al final una poderosa escena que puede llegar a descolocarnos porque, con ella, nos arrastra a una arriesgada reflexin sobre el reparto de responsabilidades en el drama de la esclavitud. Hasta aqu podemos escribir sin hacer un spoiler. 12 aos de esclavitud obtuvo el Oscar a la Mejor Pelcula en 2014. Basada en un hecho real ocurrido en 1850, narra la historia de Solomon Northup, un culto msico negro y hombre libre que viva con su familia en Nueva York. Tras compartir una copa con dos desconocidos, Solomon descubre que ha sido drogado y secuestrado para ser vendido como esclavo en el Sur en una plantacin de Louisiana. Solomon contempla cmo todos a su alrededor sucumben a la violencia, al abuso emocional y a la desesperanza. Entonces decide correr riesgos y confiar en la gente menos aparente para recuperar su libertad y reunirse con su familia.

A renewed (or not really) reflection on the history of slavery in the United States
The years in which the USA kept Negros as slaves is one of the historical periods that has generated the largest number of audio-visual productions (for both cinema and television). Movie director Steve McQueen again takes up this historical reference to construct a film which, while it sometimes takes us across common ground, it does at the end introduce a powerful scene that can manage to confuse us because, by means of it, we are dragged to a risky reflexion on the distribution of responsibilities in the drama of slavery. We can write up to here without making a spoiler. 12 Years of Slavery won the Oscar for the Best Movie of this year and it was won justly. Based on a real happening that took place in 1850, it relates the story of Solomon Northup, a cultured Negro musician and a free man who lived with his family in New York. After having a drink with two strangers, Solomon discovers that he has been drugged and kidnapped to be sold as a slave in the South, to a Louisiana plantation. Refusing to lose hope, Solomon contemplates how everyone around him succumbs to violence, emotional abuse and despair. He then decides to run incredible risks and trust in less apparent people in order to recover his freedom and return to his family.

Esta esfera es un disco duro: no tiene una enorme capacidad, pero el diseo mola
Empecemos siendo honestos: un disco duro con un espacio de almacenamiento de 1TB por 350 euros (aproximadante) no tiene el precio ms competitivo del mercado (los hay con el doble de capacidad a un precio menor). Con esta advertencia inicial, hay que decir que el objeto en s mismo est a caballo entre lo funcional y lo decorativo, y que, estticamente, resulta deslumbrante. This hard drive in the form of a sphere is made by LaCie, a computer hardware firm that specialises in external hard drives, who has commissioned the French company Christofle that produces jewellery, silver ware and personal accessories to give a silver finish to this hard drive which has been baptised accumulating names as the LaCie Christofle Sphre. It has a high speed USB 3.0 port and storage space of 1TB. It does not need mains connection as it plugs into the computer (Windows or Mac) with a USB jack. Una ciudad de luz y cultura con una tradicin nica en el mundo: el Festival de los Patios

El espectculo dura varios meses al ao, especialmente cuando la primavera despierta a orillas del Guadalquivir. Aunque, durante dos semanas de mayo, ese espectculo se convierte en un fenmeno social que llena las calles de sol, murmullos e idas y venidas, entre el sol y la sombra, de gente animada. Es el Festival de los Patios de Crdoba, un acontecimiento en el que las casas particulares de los vecinos compiten por alzarse con el premio al patio mejor engalanado. Los patios de las casas cordobesas (declarados en 2012 Patrimonio Inmaterial de la Humanidad) constituyen en s mismos un fenmeno arquitectnico, social y esttico. Cuando la ciudad estaba bajo dominio musulmn, las casas populares se construan en torno a un patio, que se adornaba con abundante vegetacin para aumentar la sensacin de frescor. Hoy da, los vecinos se esmeran en cuidar esas plantas, en su mayora florales, y crear autnticos museos naturales, algunos de los cuales a pesar de ser viviendas particulares se pueden visitar durante todo el ao.

A city of light and culture with a unique tradition: the Festival of Courtyards
The show lasts for several months each year, especially when spring awakens on the banks of the Guadalquivir. However, for two weeks during the month of May this spectacle becomes a social phenomenon that fills the sunny streets with the chattering, the comings and goings of the animated crowd as they roam between sun and shade. It is the Festival of the Cordova Courtyards, an original happening in which neighbours private houses compete for the prize awarded to the most lavishly adorned courtyard in the city. The courtyards of Cordova houses (in 2012 declared Immaterial Human Heritage) in themselves constitute an architectural, social and aesthetic phenomenon. During the time the city was under Moorish domination, houses were generally built around a courtyard which was adorned with luxuriant plant life to increase the feeling of freshness. Nowadays, the neighbours give loving care to these plants, most of which bear flowers, creating true natural museums, some of which despite being private houses can be visited throughout the year. The Festival of Courtyards is only one of the many reasons for enjoying a city in which the wealth of the historical heritage rivals with its mundane pleasures. The essential visits should start with the Mezquita (mosque), now the cathedral, building of which began in 785 and which is the third largest in the world (only surpassed by the Mosque of Mecca and the Blue Mosque of Istanbul). We must likewise not miss a visit to Medina Azahara, a palatial town for which orders to be built were given by Caliph Abd-al-Rahman III in 929. We can also immerse ourselves in the Roman era:

TOLEDO

En el 400 centenario del nacimiento de El Greco, la ciudad donde desarroll gran parte de su obra se convierte en un escenario privilegiado para descubrir las claves de su genio. On the 400th anniversary of the birth of El Greco, , the city where he carried out a large part of his work is to become a privileged scenario for discovering the keys to his geniality.

Durante todo 2014, Toledo acoge la mayor exposicin realizada sobre la obra de Domnikos Theotokpoulos, el Greco (el griego), y lo hace llenando la ciudad de enclaves para admirar sus lienzos. El Museo de Santa Cruz es la sede principal, pero tambin encontramos repartidos por toda la localidad los denominados Espacios Greco, que son lugares que albergan algunas de sus piezas originales o en los que el pintor trabaj: la Sacrista de la Catedral de Toledo, la Capilla de San Jos, el convento de Santo Domingo el Antiguo, la Iglesia de Santo Tom y el Hospital Tavera. Esta exposicin, que cuenta con nada menos que 100 piezas, se desarrolla hasta el 14 de junio. Pero, adems, hay programada otra segunda gran exposicin, El Greco, arte y oficio (del 8 de septiembre al 9 de diciembre), que trae por primera vez obras que nunca se han expuesto en Espaa, entre ellas, varias procedentes de colecciones particulares del Reino Unido, Estados Unidos y Mxico. Esta conmemoracin, con eventos irrepetibles, justifica de por s una visita a la ciudad imperial (as denominada por haber sido la sede principal de la corte de Carlos I de Espaa y V de Alemania), cuyo casco histrico fue declarado por UNESCO Patrimonio de la Humanidad en 1986. A quien an no la conozca, Toledo le sorprender por sus callejuelas estrechas y cuestas empinadas que discurren como un laberinto que nos retrotrae a la Edad Media. Es una de esas ciudades que tambin hay que contemplar desde fuera, tratando de buscar la mejor panormica. El perfil de una urbe que crece sobre una colina en un meandro del ro Tajo, en medio de la llanura manchega, no dejar de sorprendernos.

A whole year for discovering a city through the eyes of El Greco

Throughout 2014, Toledo is to house the largest exhibition ever displayed of the work of Domenikos Theotokopoulos, El Greco (the Greek) and it does so filling the city with spaces for admiring his work. The Santa Cruz Museum is the main headquarters, although we will also find Greco Spaces scattered around the city; places which house some of the original works or places where the artist worked: the Toledo Cathedral Sacristy, the San Jos Chapel, the Convent of Santo Domingo el Antiguo, the Church of Santo Tom and Tavera Hospital. This exhibition, which display no less than 100 works of art, is on show until 14th June. However, a second, important exhibition has been planned (8th September to 9th December), El Greco, Art and Trade, which for the first time brings together work never before been displayed in Spain, many belonging to private collections from the U.K., the U.S.A. and Mexico. This commemoration, with unrepeatable events, in itself justifies a visit to what is known as The Imperial City (thus named though having been the venue of the royal court of Charles I of Spain and V of Germany), whose Old City was declared as a Human Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. For those who do not yet know it, Toledo will come as a surprise for its narrow alleys and steep slopes which form a maze that will take us back to the Middle Ages. It is one of those cities that also have to be contemplated from the outside, to try to find the best panoramic view. The profile of a city that grows on a hillside by a meander of the Tagus river, in the middle of the Spanish plain, will not cease to amaze us.

e la finalidad ms comn de una escultura como estatua conmemorativa a finales del siglo XIX y primeras dcadas del XX se ha pasado al concepto de intervencin artstica en el espacio, una corriente que se desarrolla sobre todo a partir de los aos setenta del siglo pasado. Durante los ltimos cincuenta aos se han producido las revoluciones artsticas y urbanas ms insospechadas. Adems de configurarse nuevos entornos urbanos en funcin de creaciones escultricas, se han generado sobre todo nuevas percepciones espaciales a travs de la interactuacin con el objeto escultrico. Lo primero que habra que sealar en esta revolucin tridimensional es la desaparicin de los pedestales. La democratizacin de las artes genera un dilogo directo con el espectador, de igual a igual. Las dimensiones no importan, solo la sensacin de estar al mismo nivel de la creacin, de su creador y del concepto. Ya no se ensalza la hazaa de un ciudadano concreto con un monumento, sino que se conmemoran actos y recuerdos colectivos, se ponen de manifiesto valores que se han alcanzado, y que se necesita recordar. La utilizacin del acero ha sido de gran ayuda para esta desaparicin de pedestales. La solidez y duracin de este material han sido clave desde los aos sesenta. Richard Serra (San Francisco, 1939) es el artista que mejor ha sabido adaptarlo a sus creaciones. Al nuevo concepto se han ido aadiendo nuevos materiales de uso exterior como el aluminio, cemento y otros tan sugerentes como el vidrio o los leds. Las primeras interactuaciones con el entorno urbano fueron intervenciones en los espacios exteriores de los museos de arte contemporneo como parte de sus propias colecciones o de exposiciones temporales. Estas tmidas obras pblicas han supuesto una gran aportacin para el salto al verdadero espacio pblico. Otra de las revoluciones que ha experimentado esta disciplina artstica es el relevo en los promotores de las obras. Los patrocinios privados toman un papel protagonista en estas creaciones que, junto a la edificacin de sedes sociales empresariales, conforman los entornos contemporneos. Un buen ejemplo lo encontramos en la base del Rockefeller Centre de Nueva York, donde la obra Sky Mirror, de Anish Kapoor (Bombay, 1954), se erige en protagonista de la calle por sus reflejos metafricos y los de las personas que pasean por delante. Artistas como Siah Armajani (Irn, 1939) defienden la creacin artstica como algo ms que un vehculo para la expresin personal y conciben el arte pblico como arte cvico. Armajani insiste en el uso de la escultura al servicio de la experiencia urbana, como una escultura insertada en la vida comunitaria, a la vez que subraya su funcin social y su carcter antimonumental. En sus obras se desmitifica el culto al creador a favor de un sentido social de la escultura, donde esta se define fundamentalmente como til y comunitaria. La poesa y la filosofa inspiran sus creaciones, y desde ah opta por conferir a sus espacios una funcin determinada que contemple las necesidades fundamentales de un modo de vida. OBRAS EFMERAS Al lado de la intervencin de carcter permanente se desarrolla la obra efmera o temporal que suele estar vinculada a grandes eventos culturales como son las bienales. Este fue el caso de Awilda, en la playa de Ro de Janeiro, de Jaume Plensa (Barcelona, 1955), cuyo carcter monumental quiso llamar la atencin precisamente sobre la ausencia de arte urbano en la ciudad y la importancia del mismo como referencia cultural e identidad de las personas que viven la ciudad. Y no solo desde el punto de vista patrimonial, sino sensorial-espacial. The Crown Fountain, en Chicago, es una de las obras ms conocidas del mismo autor y uno de los mejores ejemplos de los propsitos de

rom the most common purpose of a sculpture as a commemorative statue at the end of the 19th and initial decades of the 20th centuries, we have passed onto that of an artistic intervention in a space, which has evolved primarily as from the 70s in the last century. These past fifty years have been witness to the most unsuspected revolutions for its citizens. In addition to configuring new urban environments according to sculptural creations, new special perceptions have been generated, above all, through interaction with the sculptural object. The first thing that should be pointed out in this threedimensional revolution is the disappearance of pedestals. The democratization of the arts generates a direct dialogue with the spectator, at the same level. The dimensions do not matter, only the feeling of being at the same level as the creation, its creator and the concept. No longer is the feat of a specific citizen extoled with a monument, rather it is commemorated with acts and collective memorials, the values attained are stated as well as the need to remember them. The use of steel has been a great help towards the disappearance of pedestals. The solidity and duration of this material has been the key ever since the 60s. Richard Serra (San Francisco, 1939) is the artist who has best adapted to it in his creations. New materials for exterior use have gradually been added to the new concept, such as aluminium, cement and others as thought-provoking as glass or leds. The first interactions with the exterior urban environment have been interventions in the exteriors of contemporary art museums as part of their permanent collections or temporary exhibitions. These timid works of art have signified a great contribution towards the leap to the true public space. Another of the revolutions experienced by this artistic discipline is the taking over of the promoters of such works. Private sponsors take a leading role in these creations which, together with the building of company headquarters comprise contemporary environments. A good example of this can be found at the base of the Rockefeller Center in New York where Sky Mirror by Anish Kapoor (Bombay, 1954) stands out as the protagonist on account of its metaphorical reflections and those of the people who pass by it. Artists like Siah Armajani (Iran, 1939) defend artistic creation as something more than a vehicle for personal expression and conceive public art as civic art. He insists in the use of sculpture at the service of urban experience, like a sculpture inserted in community life, while at the same time underscoring its social function and its anti-monumental character. In his work he demythologizes the cult of the creator in favour of a social sense of the sculpture, where this is defined essentially as useful and community-related. Poetry and philosophy are contemplated in his creations and, from there he chooses to confer on his spaces a definite function which considers the fundamental needs of a lifestyle. EPHEMERAL WORKS Side by side with interventions of a permanent nature, a type of ephemeral or temporary work has been developed, which is usually associated with great cultural events such as the Biennals. This was the case of Awilda, on the Rio de Janeiro beach, by Jaume Plensa (Barcelona, 1955), the monumental nature of which was aimed at drawing attention precisely to the absence of urban art in the city and the importance of it as a cultural reference and the identity of the people who live in the city, not only from the point of view of its heritage but also that of space and the senses. la escultura en el entorno urbano actual: la comunicacin, la conversacin y la interaccin En definitiva, generar un lugar de encuentro. Otro punto destacable es la participacin de personas annimas en el arte pblico. Este aspecto se concreta de diversas maneras: la interactuacin con el pblico, la recuperacin de la memoria histrica y la aparicin de los ciudadanos como protagonistas de la obra. Este ltimo caso lo encontramos en el trabajo de uno de los artistas espaoles ms internacionales, Daniel Canogar (Madrid, 1964), que cuenta en Madrid con una de las ms interesantes instalaciones permanentes en dos puentes sobre el ro Manzanares. Se construyeron en la pasada dcada para unir dos barrios tradicionales que la barrera natural del ro separaba: Constelaciones se sita en los techos abovedados y representa, con la tcnica del mosaico, a los vecinos fotografiados en las inmediaciones. El homenaje en este caso es a la vida cotidiana.

na destacada obra civil por la profundidad de su reflexin y no solo por su carcter de homenaje es el monumento en memoria del Holocausto judo en Europa, edificado en Berln, en las cercanas de la Puerta de Brandenburgo, entre los aos 2003 y 2005. Esta construccin pretende enfrentarse a la nocin de monumento en s mismo, acercndonos ms a la introspeccin que a la conmemoracin pblica. La traduccin literal del nombre alemn es Monumento memorial a los judos asesinados en Europa, fue realizada por el arquitecto Peter Eisenman (New Jersey, 1932) y est formada por 2.711 cubos de hormign. Muy cerca del cementerio, en el centro de Berln, tambin se ha querido recordar el genocidio de la raza gitana, en la misma guerra, con un estanque inaugurado en 2012, donde el agua sirve como reflejo de actos que no han de repetirse y obliga a mirarse de frente para construir un futuro digno. En el centro, un soporte sirve para depositar una ofrenda floral diaria, y alrededor del estanque aparecen piedras con los nombres grabados de los campos de exterminio. Anteriormente, en el ao 2008, en el mismo parque de la ciudad alemana se cre una videoinstalacin en conmemoracin de la persecucin homosexual por parte del nacionalsocialismo. Es un cubo de hormign que tiene una pequea ventana donde los visitantes pueden ver un vdeo que ensea besos entre personas del mismo sexo. El beso representa el acto de amor que puso en peligro la vida de muchas personas durante el rgimen nazi, y el cubo representa la tumba o muerte a la que se enfrentaban por ello. Las simultneas informaciones que proyectan las urbes del siglo actual han creado a su vez la necesidad de ordenar los estmulos que recibe el ciudadano que las habita. El arte pblico de vanguardia nos ayuda a sentirnos, aunque sea por breves instantes, y a percibir sensaciones que forman parte imprescindible de la humanidad y sin las que la creatividad no sera posible. El padre del conceptualismo, y en gran manera de la revolucin del arte moderno, Marcel Duchamp, insista en que el arte no puede obviar su contexto, ya que es este el que le otorga todo su significado; de esta forma, el arte pblico no puede tampoco olvidar la arquitectura, el urbanismo, la cultura y, en definitiva, la idiosincrasia de la audiencia a la que se dirige. Percibir la realidad que estamos viviendo o soar con otras realidades: la escultura en entornos urbanos se ha convertido en una sea de identidad de la cultura universal, queriendo poner de manifiesto lo que hay de igual entre los ciudadanos y en sus ciudades.

Another noteworthy point is the participation of anonymous persons in public art. This aspect is solved in different ways: interaction with the public, recovery of the historical memory and the appearance of citizens as the leading figures of the piece of work. This latter case is be found in the work of one the most international Spanish artists: Daniel Canogar (Madrid, 1964), who has one of the most interesting permanent installations on two bridges over Manzanares river. They were built in the past decade to join two traditional districts which were distanced by the natural barrier formed by the river: Constellations is situated over the vaulted roofs and, using the mosaic technique, represents neighbours photographed in the vicinity. The tribute in this case is to everyday life.

n outstanding work of art for its depth of reflection and not only for its commemorative nature is the monument in memory of the Jewish Holocaust in Europe, erected in Berlin close to the Brandenburg Gate between the years 2003-2005. This construction aspires to confront the notion of the monument as such, bringing us far closer to introspection than to public commemoration. The literal translation from German is Memorial monument to the Jews murdered in Europe, carried out by architect Peter Eisenman (New Jersey, 1932) and is composed of 2,711 blocks of reinforced concrete. In the centre of Berlin very close to the cemetery, the genocide of the gypsy race, during the same war, has also been commemorated with a pond officially inaugurated in 2012 where the water serves as a mirror of acts that must never be repeated and which forces one to look ahead in order to build an honourable future. In the middle, there is a bracket for holding a daily floral offering and surrounding the pond are stones engraved with the names of the extermination camps. Previously, in 2008, in the same park of the German capital, a video-installation was set up in commemoration of the homosexual persecution by National Socialism. It is a reinforced concrete cube with a small window where visitors can see a video showing persons of the same sex kissing. The kiss represents the act of love that endangered the lives of many during the Nazi regime and the cube represents the grave or the death they were faced with for their condition. The simultaneous items of information projected by the cities of this current century have, in turn, created the need to order those stimuli. Cutting-edge public art helps us to feel, albeit for brief instants, and to perceive sensations that form an indispensable part of humanity, without which creativity would not be possible. The father of conceptualism and to a large degree the revolution of modern art, Marcel Duchamp, insists that art cannot leave out its context, that this is what gives it all its significance; thus, public art can also not ignore architecture, urban planning, culture and, in short, the idiosyncrasy of the audience it is aimed at. Whether perceiving the reality we are living in or dreaming of other realities: sculpture in urban environments has become an identity mark of universal culture, wanting to make clear what there is in common between citizens and their cities.

Hoy sobreviven en el imaginario colectivo como ngeles custodios de una deliciosa mentira: la de un tiempo donde todo pareca posible mientras el mundo se desmoronaba a su alrededor. Es difcil concretar cuando se habla de sensaciones. Y ms difcil an si se trata de rescatar tiempos perdidos, memorias y lugares lejanos, vidas olvidadas. A veces no muchas, la verdad, la suerte nos hace un guio y nos coloca frente a pequeos retazos de historia, sutiles pinceladas de otras pocas que los vaivenes del tiempo no han conseguido borrar. Y a veces esos espordicos momentos de fortuna se producen en hoteles que atesoran un inmenso poder para evocar con fuerza y fidelidad los destellos del pasado. En ocasiones, es algo tan sencillo como un nombre; en otras, una meloda, un balcn abierto o el bordado de una sbana lo que nos invita a imaginar otras vidas. As me ocurri a m mientras trabajaba en El tiempo entre costuras. No fue un encuentro casual, para qu ocultarlo. Saba que pocos lugares reflejaran el espritu de la poca que quera rescatar como algunos de los hoteles ubicados en las ciudades donde transcurrira la trama. Y entre ellos, por haber formado parte de un universo fascinante que ya no existe, me dej seducir por aquellas viejas glorias del Marruecos de tiempos de presencia espaola e internacional. Nada ms descender del ferry que cruza el Estrecho desde Tarifa o Algeciras, la silueta del hotel Continental, con su soberbia terraza sobre el azul del mar, se levanta todava blanca y orgullosa frente

alf way between nostalgia and legend, debating between reality and fantasy, this little group of hotels witnessed the adventures in Morocco of Sira Quiroga, the leading character of the novel The Time in Between (El tiempo entre costuras). Nowadays, they exist in the collective imagination as guardian angels of a delicious lie: that of a time when everything seemed possible while the world crumbled around it. It is difficult to be precise when talking about feelings. And even more difficult if one is trying to salvage lost times, memories and distant places, forgotten lives. Sometimes not many, to tell the truth luck gives us a break and places us before small scraps of history, subtle brushstrokes of other eras that the ups and downs of time have not managed to erase. And sometimes those sporadic moments of luck happen in hotels that possess an immense ability for conjuring up flashes from the past, forcefully and faithfully. At times, it is something as simple as a name; others, a melody, an open balcony or the embroidery on a sheet that invite us to imagine other lives. This is what happened to me while I was working on The Time in Between (El tiempo entre costuras). It was not a casual encounter; there is no need to hide the fact. I knew that there were few places that could reflect the spirit of an era I wanted to salvage as soundly as some of the hotels located in the cities where the plot was to take place. And amongst them all, for having formed part of a fascinating universe that no longer exists, I allowed myself to be seduced by those old, Moroccan has-beens of the time of the Spanish and international occupation. No sooner does one walk off the ferry that crosses the Straits of Gibraltar from Tarifa or Algeciras to Tangiers than one encounters the sil-

A l lleg una inocente Sira Quiroga henchida de amor y de sueos, y all, en una habitacin abierta al mar, descubrira la dulzura del t moruno y la amargura de la vida. El Continental se construy en 1865, siendo inaugurado cuentan por el mismsimo duque de Edimburgo. Pocos lugares retienen como este hotel los posos de su pasado esplendor. Hoy es, posiblemente, el nico superviviente de una poca de fascinacin y locura que impuls a miles de acaudalados europeos a viajar a Marruecos cegados por un espejismo de luz, color, tolerancia y fantasa. As, atrados por el exotismo oriental que emanaban los pinceles de artistas como Delacroix y Roberts, llegaron personajes tan variopintos como un joven llamado Winston Churchill tras dar por concluida su experiencia como corresponsal en la guerra de los Boers, cuando andaba en busca de un lugar donde reposar sus penurias. Y lo encontr en la magnfica terraza y en los evocadores salones del Continental, los mismos salones donde el seductor Ramiro Arribas apuraba hasta el amanecer los restos de sus noches marruecas. No fue el futuro premier britnico el nico residente de prestigio. Tambin se hospedaron en sus habitaciones hoy decadentes y necesitadas de una buena mano de pintura algunas celebridades patrias, como el escritor Po Baroja, el dramaturgo y premio Nobel de Literatura Jacinto Benavente, y el presidente de la primera repblica espaola Emilio Castelar. Tambin dentro de Tnger las pginas de la novela nos conducirn ms adelante a un segundo mtico hotel de la ciudad, el El Minzah. Si el Continental es exotismo y decadencia, el El Minzah es glamour, intriga y sofisticacin. Todava hoy mantiene parte de la mgica aureola que un da lo convirti en el establecimiento ms extraordinario del norte de frica, inaugurado en los aos 30 por uno de aquellos aristcratas ingleses que sucumbieron al hechizo de

That is where Sira Quiroga disembarked, inflamed with love and dreams and there, in a room looking out onto to the sea, was where she was to discover the sweetness of Moorish tea and the bitterness of life. The Continental was built in 1865 and officially opened so the story goes by Duke of Edinburgh. There are few places still in existence like this hotel which can retain the traces of a past splendour. Today, it is possibly the only survivor of an era of fascination and madness that impelled thousands of wealthy Europeans to travel to Morocco, blinded by an illusion of light, colour, tolerance and fantasy. Thus, attracted by the oriental exoticism that emanated from the canvases of artists like Delacroix and Roberts, personalities began to arrive as diverse as a young man called Winston Churchill, after concluding his experience as a war correspondent in the Boer War and in search of a place to let the dust settle. And he found it on the magnificent terrace and in the evocative lounges of the Continental, those same lounges where the seductive Ramiro Arribas squeezed out the very last drops of his Moroccan nights through until dawn. The future British premier was not the only resident of prestige. Several celebrities such as the Spanish novelist, Po Baroja; the playwright, Nobel Literature Prize winner, Jacinto Benavente and the President of the first Spanish Republic, Emilio Castelar sought accommodation in its rooms, nowadays decadent and in need of a good coat of paint. Also in Tangiers, the pages of the novel take us later on to the second mythical hotel of the city. El Minzah. If the Continental is exoticism and decadence, El Minzah is glamour, intrigue and sophistication. Even today it maintains part of the magic halo which, in its day, turned it into the most

la ciudad. Aunque su verdadera leyenda llegar aos ms tarde de la mano de artistas, reyes, escritores y estrellas de cine, su versin ms cinematogrfica comienza a forjarse durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial cuando Tnger, ciudad con estatuto internacional, atraa como un imn a refugiados, oportunistas, espas y soadores mezclados en su mtico Caids Bar, igual que lo haran Sira y Rosalinda rodeadas de secretos, turbias miradas y acordes de piano. A poco ms de sesenta kilmetros de Tnger se encuentra Tetun, la blanca paloma, capital del protectorado espaol y ciudad donde recalar Sira Quiroga tras su azarosa huida de Tnger. Su llegada a la ciudad es tan accidentada que difcilmente hubiera podido soar con alojarse en el Nacional, su flamante hotel. Inaugurado por la Compaa Espaola de Minas del Rif para alojar a algunos de sus trabajadores de mayor nivel, pronto se convirti en un centro de referencia de la ciudad. En sus habitaciones descans el rey Alfonso XIII, mi falso periodista Marcus Logan, y una joven Elisabeth Taylor durante el rodaje de la pelcula Zarak. El hotel Nacional ya no existe como tal. Para el rodaje de la serie de televisin basada en mi novela sus instalaciones fueron recreadas en otro encantador hotel boutique en el Monte Viejo de Tnger, Villa Josephine, que en su da fue residencia de Walter Burton Harris, escritor y corresponsal del peridico The Times cuya singular vida sirvi de inspiracin dicen para el personaje de Indiana Jones. Memoria, leyenda, legado de tiempos y almas que quedaron atrs. Mezclando ficcin y realidad, estos hoteles fueron activos testigos de un tiempo que transcurri entre costuras y nos roz el corazn.

Mara Dueas (Puertollano, 1964), profesora de lengua y literatura inglesa en la Universidad de Murcia, public su primera novela, El tiempo entre costuras, en 2009, que pronto se convirti en un xito de ventas y fue traducido a varios idiomas. En Espaa, la serie de televisin basada en esta novela es todo un fenmeno social. Tambin ha escrito Misin olvido (2012). Mara Dueas (Puertollano, 1964), professor of English language and literature at Murcia University, published her first novel, El tiempo entre costuras (A Time in Between) in 2009, which was soon to become a best seller and has been translated into various languages. In Spain, the television series based on this novel is a veritable social phenomenon. She has also written Misin olvido (Mission Oblivion), published in 2012.

extraordinary establishment in North Africa, opened in the thirties by one of those English aristocrats who had succumbed to the magic spell of the city. Although its true, legendary existence was to arrive years later propagated by artists, kings, writers and movie stars, its most cinematographic version began to be forged during the Second World War when Tangiers, an city with international status, attracted like a magnet refugees, opportunists, spies and dreamers, all mixed together in its legendary Caids Bar, just as Sira and Rosalind were to do, encircled by secrets, suspicious glances and the strains of piano music. A little over sixty kilometres from Tangiers lies Tetouan the white dove, the then capital of the Spanish Protectorate and the city where Sira Quiroga is to end up, following her hazardous flight from Tangiers. Her arrival in this city is so full of mishaps that she would hardly have been able to imagine herself being accommodated at the Nacional, its luxurious hotel. Originally opened by the Compaia Espaola de Minas del Rif (Spanish Rif Mines Company) to house some of its high-level staff, it soon became the citys nerve centre. In its rooms rested King Alfonso XIII, my false reporter Marcus Logan and a young Elizabeth Taylor during the shooting of Zarak. The Hotel Nacional no longer exists. For the filming of the television series based on my novel, it was recreated in another, delightful, boutique hotel on Tangiers Old Mountain, Villa Josphine, which in its day was the residence of Walter Burton Harris, writer and foreign correspondent for The Times and whose tumultuous life served as inspiration it is said for the Indiana Jones character. Reminiscences, legends, a heritage of times and people left behind; blending fiction and reality, these hotels were active witnesses of a time in between which elapsed amongst seamstresses and touched our hearts.

Jordi Cotrina, fotgrafo deportivo de El Peridico de Catalunya, fue el autor de las fotografas ganadoras del Premio Grand Marina 2013, cuya temtica era Barcelona, ciudad del deporte. La imagen (1), que muestra tres fases distintas de un salto de palanca durante los Mundiales de Natacin celebrados en Barcelona, refleja el esfuerzo y la plasticidad de los cuerpos esculpidos por el deporte. Cotrina ha cubierto seis Juegos Olmpicos: todas las ediciones desde Barcelona 92 a Londres 2012. Como ganador, Cotrina se hizo merecedor de los 3.000 euros en juego. Por su parte, Manuel Gonzlez Vega gan la segunda edicin del Premio Madrid Tower de Fotografa (2), tambin premiado con 3.000 euros. La foto ganadora es una imagen difana y de gran simplicidad de la arena de la plaza de toros de Las Ventas. El jurado valor especialmente una fotografa de esas que parecen muy fciles, al alcance de todo el mundo, y en cambio slo las personas con una especial mirada son capaces de captar. El Premio Grupo Hotusa fue para Carlos Bonilla (3) por una sugerente foto de la Gran Va de Madrid. Se presentaron a concurso ms de 800 fotos. Jordi Cotrina, El Peridico de Catalunya sports photographer, was the creator of the winning photos of the 2013 Grand Marina Prize, the theme of which was Barcelona, city of sport. The images (1) show three different phases of a springboard dive during the Swimming World Championships held in Barcelona, which reflect the effort and plasticity of the bodies sculpted by the sport. Cotrina has covered six Olympic Games: every edition since Barcelona 92 through to London 2012. As winner, Cotrina pocketed the purse of 3,000 euros. Manuel Gonzlez Vega, on the other hand, won the second edition of the Madrid Tower Photography Prize (2), also endowed with 3,000 euros. The winning photo is a diaphanous, enormously simple image of the sand in Las Ventas bullring. The panel particularly valued the photograph as one of those that appear to be very easy, within anyones reach, but which, however, only a person with a special kind of vision is able to capture. The Hotusa Group Prize went to Carlos Bonilla (3) for a suggestive view of Madrids Gran Va. More than 800 entries for the contest were registered.

Lifestyle bloggers choose Eurostars Hotels

Eurostars Hotels, over the past few months, started up a communication campaign with a selection of the best lifestyle bloggers in Spain. On the occasion of the New York Fashion Week, Alexandra Pereira, writer of the Lovely Pepa blog and Paula Ordovs, the My Peep Toes blogger, were accommodated at the Eurostars Dylan and later, at Hotusa Group hotels in Paris. Whats more, Aida Domnech, the Dulceida blogger, awarded as the best lifestyle blog in Blog Fashion Awards, also put her trust in Eurostars Hotels by staying at the Eurostars Plaza Mayor (Madrid), the Eurostars Grand Central and the Eurostars Book Hotel (both in Munich). Eurostars Hotels has also carried out an action together with La Roca Village. The event consisted of a shopping afternoon at La Roca Village, followed by an exclusive after-work party offered by Bacardi at El Cubo, the Eurostars Grand Marina space in Barcelona. El Premio Eurostars de Narrativa de Viajes llega a su dcima edicin tras haberse consolidado como el gran premio en espaol de este gnero. En esta edicin se han presentado ms de 150 obras a concurso, y el fallo del jurado, integrado entre otros por los escritores Carme Riera y Alfredo Conde, se dar a conocer en una gala celebrada a finales de junio en el Eurostars Grand Marina de Barcelona. El joven pintor Carles Azcn trabaja obras que exploran las estructuras y formas vegetales as como sus flujos de energa. El artista muestra en esta exposicin la sensibilidad y fascinacin que siente ante la naturaleza y las plantas. Azcn intenta integrar el ser humano y la naturaleza en sus composiciones, dando lugar a sus caractersticas formas naturales y colores intensos. The young painter, Carles Azcn, centres his work on exploring plant structures and forms, as well as their energy flows. In this exhibition, the artist demonstrates his sensitivity and fascination for nature and plant life. Azcn attempts to integrate the human being and nature in his compositions, giving rise to their characteristic nature-related forms and intense colours.

La mirada del artista est entrenada para buscar y localizar la belleza en cualquier lugar, como si se tratara de un radar. Posteriormente, el artista la descontextualiza para reforzarla y para dotarla de individualidad y representacin esttica. Si, adems, centra su atencin en el paisaje que le rodea y con el que convive habitualmente, las imgenes se envuelven de una fuerte carga sentimental, y esta visin termina transmitiendo algo nico y original. El Eurostars Brisas do Lago (Brasilia), abierto en 2013, se estrena en el proyecto Eurostars Exposiciones a travs de una de esas miradas asombrosas, la de la fotgrafa Raquel Pellicano, que inaugura el espacio expositivo del hotel con su serie fotogrfica Ensaio sobre a contemplao, donde la artista fotografa el desierto de Atacama en busca de la contemplacin introspectiva de una forma atemporal. La obra de Laura Nieto surge de la reivindicacin del acto de mirar. La artista observa el espacio urbano y el entorno que la rodea para, posteriormente, representar en sus obras las escenas cotidianas de la vida en Berln, una urbe que se ha convertido en el eje central de esta artista vallisoletana. Nieto convierte la cotidianeidad en algo misterioso, especial y hasta heroico. Laura Nietos work emerges from a vindication of the act of looking. The artist observes the urban space and environment which surrounds her, to later represent in her work the scenes of everyday life in Berlin, a city which has become the central point of this artist from Valladolid. Nieto converts everydayness into something mysterious, special and even heroic.

hotels exhibition area with her series of photos, Ensaio sobre a contemplao (a study on contemplation), where the artist photographs the Atacama Desert in search of a timeless, introspective contemplation. Following this exhibition, the hotel will also display a series of photos by Humberto Lemos. El denominador comn del trabajo de esta pintora asturiana es la preocupacin por el color y la exploracin de la composicin. Para explorar estos conceptos, en esta coleccin Garca Justo emplea utensilios y objetos que forman parte de nuestro da a da (sillas, mesas, jarras, vasos), creando con ellos esta serie de bodegones contemporneos que la artista ha seleccionados para la exhibicin. The common denominator in the work by this painter from Asturias is her preoccupation for colour and exploring composition. In order to explore these concepts, in this collection Garca Justo uses utensils and objects that form part of our daily life: chairs, tables, jugs, glasses, etc., creating with them this series of contemporary still life paintings which the artist has selected for this exhibition.

El artista belga Steve Vandendorpe visita Barcelona para realizar una exposicin con sus ltimos trabajos. Este artista, de tradicin abstracta, expone pinturas con influencias del estilo constructivista de principios de siglo. En la actualidad, Vandendorpe est buscando con sus composiciones el dinamismo de las formas y los colores puros, fusionndolos hasta encontrar un equilibrio pictrico idneo. Belgian artist Steve Vandendorpe is visiting Barcelona to carry out an exhibition with his latest pieces of work. This artist, whose has traditionally been an abstract painter, is displaying work with the constructivist influences of the beginning of the century. Vandendorpe is currently searching in his compositions for the dynamism of forms and pure colours, merging them to the point of finding the ideal pictorial balance.

Fernando Arrabal (Melilla, 1932) es probablemente uno de los escritores ms inclasificables, originales, brillantes y provocadores de todos los tiempos; entrevistarle se convierte en unjuego imprevisible y arriesgado. Autor de casi un centenar de obras de teatro, catorce novelas, media docena de libros de poesa, ensayos, tratados sobre ajedrez...; director de una decena de pelculas y pintor, le han descrito como el artista total que ha cruzado todos los ismos del siglo XX.

omparti el Movimiento Dad con Tristan Tzara y el surrealismo con Andr Breton. Form parte del Colegio de Patafsica, que define como una particular ciencia de las soluciones imaginarias. Y fund, junto con el chileno Alejandro Jodorowsky y el francs Roland Topor, el Movimiento Pnico, una exaltacin de sus grandes pasiones: el azar y la confusin, las matemticas, el humor y el terror. Arrabal ha ganado entre otros, el Gran Premio de Teatro de la Academia Francesa y el Premio Nacional de Teatro, el Nabokov y el Nadal de novela, el Espasa de ensayo o el Mariano de Cavia de periodismo.

A la hora de escribir forma parte de sus objetivos convertirse en ejemplo de libertad?

A la hora de escribir creo que no tengo objetivos didcticos. Planeo con mis calcetines jugando a ser Dios y a veces lo consigo.
Cita constantemente a sus amigos, bien a los fallecidos (Topor, Duchamp, Cioran, Ionesco, Beckett) o a los vivos (Kundera, Houellebecq). Parece tener una devocin casi religiosa por la amistad...

Ya lo dijo Beckett: el artista tiene que sufrir mucho para crear.

Tambin, al parecer, por el amor. Lleva casado con Luce Moreau ms de 50 aos. Qu ha supuesto ella en su vida?

Aparece entre los dramaturgos mundiales ms citados en internet y sigue estrenando. A qu cree que se debe su xito?

Para King-Kong el amor es como la pasin, pero adems con amor.

Repite a menudo que su padre ha influido de manera radical en su vida Puede decirnos cmo le marc?

El xito es como el tiempo, rotatorio y aleatorio. Los caracoles son eyaculadores precoces? El arte supone sudor y lgrimas..., y paciencia.
Ha escrito teatro, novela, poesa, ensayo, pinta y dirige pelculas. Se calificara de artista total?

Calificarme de artista total sera presumir. Los hermafroditas hablan el esperanto sin acento? Un artista es o no es. Puede ser polifactico plenipotenciariamente o no ser.
El Siglo XXI tiene su propia modernidad artstica, alguna forma transgresora de expresar? O la modernidad termin con las vanguardias?

Considero ejemplar su actitud el 17 de julio 1936. Cuando se neg a participar en el pronunciamiento hostil a la Repblica. Empez exactamente la vspera del 18, en Melilla.
Sigamos con la poltica. Fue uno de los pocos escritores que expres abiertamente su oposicin al rgimen franquista, lo que le cost la crcel Le sorprendi el recibimiento internacional de su Carta a Franco?

Las nuevas tcnicas inducen a nuevos modos de expresin. El Pan Nuestro de Cada Da lleva el cdigo de barras.
A qu se debe su pasin por las matemticas y el ajedrez? Le queda alguna pasin por explorar?

Me alegr verla acogida por tanta gente. El dios Pan es tan omnisciente que coloca los helipuertos donde aterrizan los helicpteros.
Fue tambin uno de los cinco exiliados que (junto con Carrillo, Pasionaria, Lster y El Campesino) tuvieron vetada su vuelta a Espaa hasta la llegada de la democracia De verdad era usted tan peligroso?

Me apasionan las matemticas y el ajedrez porque intentan aclarar el misterio de la confusin y el azar. Como el papa Benedicto, que, aterrado por sus dudas, tuvo que dimitir en 2013. El ajedrez es la vida, dijo Bobby Fischer. Y me quedan todas las pasiones frustradas por explorar. Traumatizado por su salida del hit parade, el famoso se suicid arrojndose desde lo alto de un altavoz.
Cul es para usted la esencia del arte?

Le parece que podra ser peligroso? Para qu reparar un reloj que es exacto dos veces por da?
En alguna entrevista se ha mostrado arrepentido de haber ocupado en mayo del 68 el Colegio de Espaa de Pars. Por qu? De qu ms se arrepiente?

Reflejar lo que parecen ser la vida y el mundo: la confusin. Pero no de un modo confuso. Cmo bailar con un rapero tartamudo?
Vive en Pars desde 1955. Como se definira: francs, espaol, aptrida?

De todo. Despus de recorrer los arrastraderos del obscurantismo atravesamos los senderos de la mistificacin luminosa?
Vivir libremente, fuera de los crculos de poder, le ha costado algunos disgustos. Ha merecido la pena?

Soy de Destierrolandia. Como muchos amigos de ayer y de hoy. Si el ratn fuera una rata: le besara la rata en que se volvi?
Le han calificado de provocador, pero parece que el adjetivo no le gusta. Qu trmino definira mejor su actitud?

S. Los disgustos forman parte de la vida: de la vie vraie... Rimbaud. Los tronos van a ser jurados del premio al mejor trasero real.
Acaba de estrenar en el Teatro Espaol de Madrid Dal versus Picasso. Si tuviera que elegir: Dal o Picasso?

Libertad: es el tema principal tratado por Cervantes. Su principal reivindicacin. El arco iris del paraso es blanco.

Me siento ms atrado por el inters que tena Dal por las aportaciones cientficas. A Picasso le bastaba con ser genial. Si Lady Gaga ganara el Nobel tendra que leer los libros que firma?

Fernando Arrabal (Melilla, 1932) is probably one of the most unclassifiable, original, brilliant and provocative writers of all times; to interview him becomes an unforeseeable, risky game. The author of close to one hundred theatrical works, fourteen novels, half-a-dozen books of poetry, essays, treatises on chess...; director of a dozen films and painter, he has been described as the complete artist who has crossed all the isms of the 20th century.

e took part in the Dadaist movement with Tristan Tzara and Surrealism with Andr Brton. He formed part of the College of Pataphysics, which he defines as a special science of imaginary solutions. And he founded, together with Chilean Alejandro Jodorowsky and Frenchman Roland Topor the Panic Movement, an exaltation of the great passions: chance and confusion, mathematics, humour and terror. Arrabal has won, amongst other awards, the Grand Prix of the French Academy for Theatrical Works and the National Theatre Prize of Spain, the Nabokov and the Nadal Book Prizes, the Espasa Essay Award or the Mariano de Cavia Prize for Journalism.

You have been classified as provocative but, it seems that you dont like the adjective. What term would best describe your attitude?

Freedom: its the principal subject dealt with by Cervantes. His principal claim. The rainbow in Paradise is white.
When you write, is one of your objectives to become an example of freedom?

When I write, I dont think I have educational objectives. I plan with my socks on, playing at being God and sometimes I achieve it,
You continually cite your friends, whether dead (Topor, Duchamp, Cioran, Ionesco, Becket.) or alive (Kundera, Houellebecq). You seem to have an almost religious devotion for friendship...

You appear among the most cited world-famous playwrights on the Internet and you continue to produce work. What do you think your success is due to?

Success is like the weather, rotating and random. Are snails premature ejaculators? Art entails sweat and tears and patience.
You have written theatrical works, novels, poetry, essays, you paint and direct films. Would you classify yourself as the complete artist?

For King-Kong love is like passion, but in addition with love.

You often repeat that your father has had a radical influence in your life. Could you tell us how he has marked you?

To classify me as a complete artist would be presumptuous. Do hermaphrodites speak Esperanto without an accent? An artist is or is not. He can be multi-faceted plenipotentiarily or not be.
Does the 21st century have its own artistic modernity, any transgressor form of expression or did modernity end with the avant-garde?

I consider his attitude of 17th July 1936 as exemplary. When he refused to participate in the hostile military uprising against the Republic. It commenced exactly the eve of the 18th, in Melilla.
You were one of the few writers who openly expressed your opposition to the Franco regime, which cost you imprisonment. Did the international reception of your Letter to Franco surprise you?

What for you is the essence of art?

Do you think I could be dangerous? Why repair a watch that is exact twice a day?

Conocer Nueva York es, en nuestra civilizacin, algo parecido a lo que en la Antigedad representaba viajar a Roma. Por distintas razones, nadie que haya visitado la capital del mundo moderno ha quedado indiferente a lo que podramos denominar el gran espectculo urbano.
Tengo un amigo que planific su viaje a Nueva York guindose por su cultura audiovisual. No es que dejara de visitar los lugares ms emblemticos de la ciudad, pero se organiz de forma que sus mximas prioridades consistieron en cruzar un tnel en Central Park donde Gena Rowlands y Gene Hackman mantienen una intensa y reveladora conversacin en Another Woman (Woody Allen, 1988), subirse al ferry que comunica Manhattan con Staten Island, el mismo en el que viajaba cada maana Melanie Griffith en Armas de mujer (Mike Nichols, 1988); o sentarse en la cafetera Central Perk, donde se reunan los protagonistas de la serie Friends (s, era un decorado, pero a la vista del xito, alguien cre una franquicia con ese nombre, recreando fielmente el interiorismo, y una de esas franquicias se encuentra en West 3rd Street). No creo que le diera tiempo a pasear por cada uno de los cientos de escenarios que durante dcadas hemos visto en cine y televisin (ni que se atreviera a estar en todos aquellos por los que se mueve Robert De Niro en Taxi Driver, de Martin Scorsese, 1976) porque Nueva York es muy grande. Demasiado grande como para aprendrselo de memoria o decir que ya lo hemos visto todo. Como en cualquier otra ciudad, si queremos aprehender su espritu tendremos que adentrarnos en sus barrios. En el caso de Nueva York, y concretamente en el de Manhattan, cada uno es en s mismo un mundo, una pequea ciudad con su particular espritu, cargada de referencias culturales e histricas: de Greenwich Village a Chinatown, pasando por el Soho, Little Italy, el entorno de Central Park o el distrito financiero. Solo con caminar por las calles de alguno de estos barrios nos habremos quedado fascinados por esta ciudad a la que los tpicos califican como la capital del mundo. Puede resultar un poco exagerado, o tal vez una eficaz campaa de marketing. En cualquier caso, s que puede decirse que constituye el principal centro financiero a nivel internacional, adems de ser uno de los entornos urbanos ms poblados y de ejercer una indiscutible influencia cultural en todo el planeta. As pues, ya que estamos en lo que parece ser el centro del universo, en una ciudad de enormes dimensiones, vamos a planificarnos bien. La propuesta para conocer este destino se estructura en tres partes: conocer los barrios emblemticos, adentrarnos en la tradicin tan neoyorkina de pasar el rato en una cafetera y, por supuesto, sealar aquellos enclaves que habremos de visitar, s o s, si a nuestro regreso no queremos or aquello de pero has estado en Nueva York y no has visitado... Esto, dicho por un amigo con las cejas muy arqueadas.

Getting to know New York is, in our civilization, something similar to what travelling to Rome signified in Ancient Times. For a variety of reasons, nobody who has visited the capital of the modern world has remained indifferent to what we could call the great urban show.
I have a friend who planned his trip to New York taking as a guide its audio-visual culture. It does not mean that he did not visit the citys most representative spots, but he organized it in such a way that his main priorities were crossing the tunnel in Central Park where Gena Rowlands and Gene Hackman held an intense, revealing conversation in Another Woman (Woody Allen, 1988), getting onto the ferry that connects Manhattan with Staten Island, the same one that Melanie Griffith took every morning in Working Girl (Mike Nichols, 1988) or sitting in the caf Central Perk where the leading characters in Friends used to gather (yes, it was a set but in view of its success, someone created a franchise with that name, faithfully recreating the interior dcor and one of these franchises is to be found on West 3rd Street). I hardly think he would have had time to take himself around every one of the hundreds of scenarios that we have seen over decades in the movies and on TV (or that he would have had the nerve to be in all the places through which Robert De Niro drove in Martin Scorceses Taxi Driver, 1976), because New York is very extensive. Too extensive to be able to memorize it or say that one has seen it all. As any other city, if we wish to capture its spirit we must go deep into its districts. In the case of New York and in particular, Manhattan, each one is a world of its own, a little city with its own, particular essence, loaded with cultural and historical references: from Greenwich Village to Chinatown, passing through Soho, Little Italy, the Central Park area or the financial district. Just walking along the streets of any one of these districts, we will be fascinated by this city which some clichs qualify as the world capital. It may be a bit of an exaggeration, or perhaps an efficient marketing campaign. In whichever case, one can indeed say that it is the major financial centre of the world, in addition to being one of the most densely populated environments and which exercises an unquestionable cultural influence across the planet. Therefore, as we are in what appears to be the centre of the universe, in a city of enormous dimensions, lets plan ourselves properly; the proposal for getting to know this destination is structured in three parts: getting to know the emblematic districts, delving into the tradition, so typical of New York, of spending time in a caf and, of course, pointing out those spots we must visit if, on our return, we do not want to hear comments such as but youve been to New York and you havent visited . Barrios emblemticos: una forma de asomarse al mundo sin salir de una ciudad
Greenwich Village, al oeste de Manhattan, es un barrio residencial que, desde los aos 60, alberg la vanguardia artstica y bohemia: en sus locales nocturnos iniciaron su carrera artistas emblemticos para la cultura norteamericana, como Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Barbra Streisand... Hace frontera con el SoHo, un rea en la que abundan las naves industriales que a partir de los aos cincuenta y sesenta se reconvirtieron en lofts y estudios que solan ocupar artistas plsticos. Caminando hacia el este nos encontraremos, por este orden, en Little Italy y Chinatown. El primero va cediendo terreno al segundo: el barrio italiano ha quedado reducido, prcticamente, a una calle, Mulberry Street, mientras Chinatown se expande cada vez ms. En Little Italy las bocas de incendio y las farolas estn decoradas con los colores de la bandera italiana. Emblematic districts: a way of looking out at the world without leaving the city
Greenwich Village, west of Manhattan, is a residential district which, ever since the sixties, has housed the artistic and Bohemian avant garde: in its night clubs artists as representative of the U.S. culture as Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Barbra Streisand (and many others) began their careers. It borders SoHo, an area full of factory premises which from the fifties and sixties were converted into lofts and studios usually occupied by artists. Travelling towards the east, we will find by order of appearance, Little Italy and Chinatown. The former is gradually loosing terrain to the latter: the Italian district has been reduced practically to one street (Mulberry Street), whereas Chinatown is expanding more and more. In Little Italy the fire hydrants and lampposts are decorated with the colours of the Italian flag. In Mulberry Street, in mid-September, the oldest event of New York is held, the Feast of San Gennaro: eleven days of music and parades. Meanwhile, Chinatown unceasingly continues to grow. Any tourist will be able to find entertainment and surprises in this area: flea markets, dozens of restaurants, neighbours practicing tai chi or playing xiangqui (Chinese chess) in Columbus Park. The Chinese community has also congregated in two other districts on the other side of East River, in Flushing (Queens) and in Sunset Park (Brooklyn); precisely from Sunset Park one gets and impressive and unique view of Brooklyn, Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. Approaching Upper East Side and Upper West Side, around the Central Park area, we will meet the most luxurious New York. Some of the most expensive apartments in New York are located on Fifth Avenue and Park Avenue.

Distribuye bien el peso

Coloca todo lo pesado en la parte inferior y en la zona de las ruedas. Al poner las cosas en la maleta, yo siempre la estructuro por pisos, sin dejar espacios vacos, como si jugara al tetris. Place all the heavy items in the lower part, by the wheels. When putting things in the suitcase, I always do so by layers, without leaving any empty spaces, like playing at Tetris. Air is our worst enemy. The appropriate order is: shoes and sponge bag at the bottom, trousers and heavyweight clothes in the middle and shirts and lightweight items on top. Small things and accessories (gloves, mobile charger, caps) are fine for filling in the empty gaps in each layer.

No le importaba que fuese ms o menos lujoso, que se encontrase en el centro o en algn barrio anodino de la periferia. Solo haba un factor que condicionaba su decisin de manera indiscutible: deba poseer un piano de cola. La ciudad tampoco era relevante. Son tantos los destinos en la vida de un viajante que al final se confunden en una gran urbe global. Este hombre no deseaba huir de su hogar, sino de s mismo. Fruto de esa necesidad imperiosa naci Arvo Pavic. Sucedi por azar una noche en la que Bernardo, aficionado a la msica desde su juventud, interpretaba al piano de un hotel de Budapest los nocturnos de Chopin. Una joven se acerc para felicitarle: Se nota que es usted un msico de raz. Disculpe mi ignorancia pero, cmo se llama? Bernardo contempl el rostro arrobado de la muchacha. Los ojos le brillaban y en sus pupilas descubri un reflejo de s mismo que le estremeci. Arvo contest sin reconocerse, Arvo Pavic. Una semana al ao. Durante este tiempo Bernardo, un comerciante tmido y rutinario oculto tras sus gafas de vidrio grueso, se converta en un msico esloveno de prestigio. It did not matter to him whether it was more or less luxurious, whether it was in the centre or in some dull suburb. There was only one factor that unquestionably conditioned his decision: it must have a grand piano. The city was equally irrelevant. There are so many destinations in the life of a travelling salesman that in the end they all merge into one global metropolis. This man did not want to flee from his home, but from himself. As a product of this pressing need, Arvo Pavic was born. It happened by chance one evening when Bernardo, a music lover since childhood, was playing Chopins Nocturnes on the piano in a Budapest hotel. A young lady approached to congratulate him: One can tell you are a born musician. Pardon my ignorance but, what is your name? Bernardo contemplated the girls enchanting face. Her eyes were shining and he discovered in her pupils his own reflection, which made him tremble. Arvo, he answered, without recognizing himself. Arvo Pavic. One week a year. Finalmente, Bernardo se desnudaba de esa piel de lujo, la doblaba cuidadosamente en su maleta y abandonaba el hotel de turno. Hasta el ao que viene, Arvo. La obediencia del esloveno siempre haba sido impecable hasta que llegaron a Oporto. El hotel escogido era el Majestic, un antiguo palacete que reflejaba la decadencia de su fachada sobre las aguas del Duero. Su duea era una mujer tan vencida como su establecimiento. Se llamaba Teresa y deba haber sido bella, pero ahora un velo de cansancio cubra el esplendor pasado. Su forma de hablar era levemente dulce. Mientras le mostraba su habitacin, un cuarto espacioso con vistas a la ribera, observ cmo sus manos dibujaban escalas en el aire. Esta mujer toca el piano dedujo Arvo satisfecho-, ser sencillo impresionarla. Bernardo la am desde el primer momento. Sinti que eran espritus afines. Lo supo por su manera nostlgica de asomarse al ro, solo por el placer de ver pasar la vida; por su sonrisa de mueca quebrada que nada espera salvo la lluvia y, ante todo, por su lnguida manera de tocar el piano. En otros tiempos haba sido profesora de msica, incluso haba compuesto alguna obra. La escuela haba cerrado y de aquel pasado solo restaba un piano de palo de rosa que dormitaba en el saln del hotel. Pero aquel era el territorio de Arvo Pavic. Ese era el trato. El esloveno era un seductor y Teresa se perfilaba como una pieza humilde en su larga lista de conquistas. En cada hotel haba dejado un amor: aristcratas, jovencitas o intelectuales. Todas se rendan al brillo del triunfador. Consigui llamar su atencin fcilmente. Tras la cena, mientras Teresa recoga los cubiertos del modesto comedor, Arvo levant la tapa del piano y comenz a tocar con maestra una pieza de Debussy. La msica inund la estancia y el corazn de Teresa se aneg de recuerdos pero no se acerc a l. Resisti el desafo durante dos noches. A la tercera sucumbi a la tentacin y se interes por la identidad de aquel enigmtico husped que

apenas sala del hotel. Un t de jazmn fue la excusa perfecta para contarle su vida. Arvo le habl de la luz dorada de Ljubljana, del lago Bled y de su exitosa carrera musical. No hay una capital del mundo donde no haya ofrecido un concierto, alarde el pianista. Yo, en cambio repuso Teresa, no me he movido de Oporto, pero siento que todas las ciudades se mezclan en este ro. El corazn de Bernardo tembl de emocin al escuchar su propio pensamiento. Pero Arvo continu hablando de lugares exticos y altos dignatarios sin escuchar el delicado silencio de Teresa. Bernardo s lo hizo, pero estaba amordazado. Se sucedieron las veladas de msica, t y confidencias. Una tarde tocaron una pieza de Liszt a cuatro manos. Al piano Teresa pareca una sirena de agua dulce agarrndose a los restos del naufragio. Le invit a contemplar la puesta de sol desde la azotea del hotel. El ro resplandeca bajo el vientre de los rabelos y la mujer recost su cabeza sobre el hombro de Arvo Pavic. A lo lejos sonaban las voces de los vendedores de pescado. Trat de tomar una de las manos de Teresa, pero algo le detuvo. Era Bernardo Surez, muerto de amor y celos, quien frustraba el impulso del pianista. Esta vez no, Arvo se dijo. No puedes engaarla con tus artificios. Yo la amo de verdad. Bernardo huy durante la noche tras guardar apresuradamente las pertenencias de Arvo en la maleta. Ni siquiera dej una nota de despedida. La oscuridad de Oporto le convirti en un fugitivo. A punto de doblar la ltima esquina de la ribera cometi la debilidad de mirar hacia el hotel Majestic. En la azotea brillaba una luz tenue. No sufras por ella sentenci Arvo Pavic con crueldad nunca se hubiera enamorado de otro perdedor. Bernardo Surez se detuvo bruscamente junto al muelle. Alz la maleta y la lanz con furia al ro. Se qued un buen rato contemplando las ondas en el agua. Despus se puso sus gafas de viajante y detuvo un taxi. A la estacin de tren, orden. Lleva alguna maleta, seor?, pregunt el conductor. Bernardo se desplom en el asiento trasero del coche. No respondi, prefiero viajar as, ligero de equipaje.

ity expanded in each city visited. Always hotels with pianos, always a new detail added to the architecture of that alter ego from Ljubljana that never passed unnoticed. Finally, Bernardo would shed that veneer of luxury, folding it up carefully in his suitcase and would leave the hotel of the moment. Until next year, Arvo. The Slovenians obedience had always been faultless until they reached Oporto. The hotel chosen was the Majestic, an old mansion that reflected the decadence of its faade on the waters of the Douro. Its owner was a woman as decrepit as her establishment. She was called Teresa and she must have been beautiful, although now a veil of tiredness covered the past splendour. Her way of speaking was delicately sweet. While she showed him his accommodation, a spacious room with views of the river bank, he observed how her hands described scales in the air. This woman plays the piano- deduced Arvo with satisfaction impressing her will be a simple matter. Bernardo loved her from the very first moment. He felt that they were kin spirits. He knew it for her nostalgic way of looking out over the river, just for the pleasure of watching life pass by; for her smile like a broken doll waiting for nothing except the rain and, above all, for her languid way of playing the piano. In former times she had been a music teacher, she had even composed pieces. The school had closed down and all that remained of that past was a rosewood piano that slumbered in the hotel lounge. But that was Arvo Pavic territory. That was the deal. The Slovenian was a seducer and Teresa was shaping up as a modest piece on his long list of conquests. In every hotel he had left a love behind: aristocrats, young ladies or intellectuals. They all surrendered to the brilliance of the winner. He managed to attract her attention easily enough. After dinner, while Teresa cleared away the cutlery in the modest dining room, Arvo lifted the piano lid and began to masterfully play a piece by Debussy. The music inundated the room and Teresas heart was flooded with memories, but she did not approach him. She resisted the challenge for two evenings. On the third she succumbed to the temptation and

enquired about the identity of that enigmatic guest who hardly ever went out of the hotel. A jasmine tea was the perfect excuse for telling her about his life. Arvo talked to her about the golden light of Ljubljana, about Lake Bled and about his successful, musical career. There is not a capital left in the world where I have not given a concert, boasted the pianist. Whereas I, responded Teresa, have never moved from Oporto, but I feel that all the cities merge in this river. Bernardos heart trembled with emotion as he heard spoken his very own thought. But Arvo continued talking about exotic places and high-ranking dignitaries without listening to Teresas delicate silence. Bernardo did do so, but he was gagged. Then came evenings of music, tea and telling secrets. One afternoon they played a piece for four hands by Liszt. At the piano, Teresa seemed like a freshwater mermaid hanging onto the remains of a shipwreck. He invited her to watch the sunset from the hotel rooftop. The river shone under the bellies of the rabelo boats and the woman rested her head on Arvo Pavics shoulder. The voices of the fish vendors floated in from the distance. He tried to take one of Teresas hands, but something stopped him It was Bernardo Surez, dying of love and jealousy, who was frustrating the pianists impulse. Not this time, Arvo, he told himself, you cant deceive her with your sly tricks. I truly love her. Bernardo fled the night long after hurriedly packing Arvos belongings in his suitcase. He did not even leave a farewell note. The darkness of Oporto turned him into a fugitive. On the verge of turning the last corner of the river bank, he committed the weakness of looking back at the Majestic. A dim light was shining on the rooftop. Dont suffer for her, Arvo sentenced cruelly, she would never have fallen in love with other loser. Bernardo Surez stopped brusquely by the quay. He lifted the suitcase and threw it with fury into the river. He stayed for some time watching the ripples in the water. Then, he put on his salesmans glasses and hailed a cab. To the railway station, he ordered. Do you have a suitcase, sir?- asked the taxi driver. Bernardo collapsed into the backseat of the car. No, he replied, I prefer travelling light, like this.

stados Unidos es hoy da la cuarta potencia mundial en cuanto a produccin de vino, por detrs de Francia, Espaa e Italia. Las principales regiones productoras se encuentran en los estados orientales de Nueva York, Pennsilvania, Ohio, Virginia y West Virginia, y en estados de la costa del Pacfico como Washington, Oregn, Idaho y California. Segn parece, el primer viedo de EE UU fue plantado en 1568, en la costa de Carolina del Sur, y la primera bodega comercial naci en el siglo XVII en Philadelphia. En cualquier caso, hoy da el estado vitivincola por excelencia es California. All la superficie de viedos adems representa nada menos que tres cuartas partes del total del cultivo de vid en Estados Unidos, y se concentra en la zona desrtica de Sacramento y en los valles de Napa y Silicon. Las principales variedades que se cultivan en este estado son la cabernet sauvignon y merlot para los vinos tintos, la chardonnay para vinos blancos, y la uva zinfandel para la obtencin de tintos y rosados. California tiene un gran peso especfico en la produccin y exportacin de vino a nivel mundial. Los principales productores all son pioneros en la fermentacin en tanques de acero inoxidable con control de las temperaturas. El vino mejor logrado es el cabernet sauvignon, ya que su cepa se adapta a todo tipo de suelos. El resultado es un vino rico en taninos y de color intenso; puede resultar algo spero y duro cuando es joven, pero tras su crianza en roble o envejecimiento en botella se consiguen vinos de aroma agradable, recordando a frutos rojos y negros, a especias y a pimiento verde. La produccin vitivincola en Estados Unidos experiment un rpido aunque desigual crecimiento en el siglo XX y sobre todo a partir de los aos ochenta, cuando las elites norteamericanas empezaron a ver el vino como una bebida sofisticada, algo de lo que hubiera estado orgulloso Benjamin Franklin, quien ya en el siglo XVIII quiso impulsar el consumo del vino para que sus ciudadanos lo sustituyeran por los incivilizados destilados (un empeo que tambin tuvo Stalin en la Unin Sovitica de los aos treinta).

he United States is nowadays the fourth producer in the world of wines, behind France, Spain and Italy. The major production regions are in the eastern states of New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia, and in the Pacific coast states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho and California. It appears that the first vineyard was planted in 1568, on the South Carolina coast and the first commercial wine cellar in the 17th century, in Philadelphia. Be that as it may, the winegrowing state par excellence nowadays is California. There, the surface area covered by vineyards represents no less than three-quarters of the U.S. total and is concentrated in the arid Sacramento district and the Napa and Silicon Valleys. The main varieties grown in this state are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot for red wines, Chardonnay for white wines and Zinfandel for ross and some reds. California has a specific weight in the production and export of wine at world level. The major producers there are pioneers in the fermenting process in stainless steel casks with temperature controls. The most successfully achieved wine is the Cabernet Sauvignon, inasmuch as the vine adapts to all kinds of soils. The result is a wine that is rich in tannins and intense in colour, which can be somewhat rough and hard when young, but after maturing in oak or aged in the bottle, pleasant aromas are achieved that are reminiscent of red and black fruits, of spices and of green pepper. Wine-growing in the United States experienced rapid, albeit uneven growth during the 20th century, particularly since the eighties, when the American elite began to conceive wine as being a sophisticated drink, a state of events that Benjamin Franklin would have been proud of since, already back in the 18th century, he tried to promote the consumption of wine amongst his fellow citizens to substitute the uncivilized distilled spirits (a task also undertaken by Stalin in the Soviet Union in the thirties).

Resulta curioso que una de las comidas ms sencillas y menos sofisticadas se haya convertido en el icono gastronmico de un pas. Sin embargo, a pesar de su sencillez, resulta que tambin existen rankings de los establecimientos que mejor preparan una hamburguesa (o que mejor han sabido innovar a partir de algo tan bsico como carne picada, pan, cebolla, queso fundido, tomate y poco ms). Solo en la ciudad de Nueva York nos encontramos con locales en los que se forman enormes colas para poder degustar sus hamburguesas. En Corner Bistro (331 W. Fourth St., Jane St.) se preparan con pan ligeramente crujiente y la acumulacin de ingredientes adquiere tal altura que exige una gran habilidad por parte de comensal. Son tambin famosas las hamburguesas de carne ecolgica de Shake Shack (con varios establecimientos en la Gran Manzana, uno de ellos en Madison Square Park) o la extica Cadillac Burger con bacon del PJ. Clarkes (915 3rd Avenue, 55th Street). Y, como curiosidad, la pareja formada por la chef neoyorkina Alex Raij y el cocinero bilbano Eder Montero, es artfice de El Doble (carne con pepinillos, cebolla, guindilla y queso de idiazbal), la Mejor Hamburguesa de Nueva York en 2013, reconocimiento otorgado en un concurso organizado por la prensa gastronmica y en la que el resultado se decide por la votacin de los lectores.

In the city of New York alone we can find places where enormous queues form to sample their hamburgers. At Corner Bistro (331 W. Fourth St., Jane St.) they are prepared with bread that is slightly crunchy and an accumulation of ingredients that acquire a height that demands great ability on the part of the consumer. Also famous are the ecological hamburgers of the Shake Shack (with various establishments in the Big Apple, one of them at Madison Square Park) or the exotic Cadillac Burger with Bacon from P.J. Clarkes (which is located at 915 Third Avenue, 55th Street). And, as a curiosity, the pair formed by New York chef, Alex Raij, and the cook from Bilbao, Eder Montero, who are the inventors of El Doble (meat with gherkins, onion, chilli and Idiazbal, raw sheeps milk cheese), the Best New York Hamburger in 2013, recognition awarded in a contest organised by the culinary press and in which the result is decided by readers votes.

Lo regenta, cmo no, el conde Drcula, quien, lejos de la imagen del temible vampiro que sobrecoge nuestros sueos, aparece en esta pelcula como un amable anfitrin y un padre sobreprotector continuamente preocupado por mantener a su hija adolescente, Mavis, aislada de los peligros que conlleva abandonar este refugio para ir a conocer mundo, un mundo poblado de terrorficos humanos. Genndy Tartakovsky, responsable de series como El laboratorio de Dexter o Las Supernenas, dirige su primer largometraje de animacin producido por Sony Pictures Animation a partir de un guin cuyo leitmovit es la inversin de roles. Aqu son los monstruos y sus familias quienes buscan un lugar de vacaciones para mantenerse alejados de los humanos, unos monstruos que, ms que unos seres dedicados a sembrar el pnico, parecen unos adolescentes incomprendidos y vapuleados por el capitn del equipo de rugby y sus esbirros de cualquier instituto de secundaria. La tormenta se desencadena cuando un humano despistado se presenta en el hotel y la joven Mavis comienza a sentir por l un vivo inters.

here are many manners of understanding luxury and, on this occasion, luxury is composed of cobwebs, rooms in semi-darkness and timely thunderstorms. Because Hotel Transylvania is an establishment that offers all the comfort demanded by guests such as Frankenstein or the Invisible Man. It is run by, of course, Count Dracula who, far from the image of the fearful vampire that upsets our dreams, appears in this film as a kind host and protective father who is constantly concerned about keeping his teenage daughter, Mavis, cut off from the dangers that would be entailed by abandoning this sanctuary for monsters to discover the world, a world inhabited by terrifying human beings. Genndy Tartakovsky, responsible for series like Dexters Lab or The Powderpuff Girls, directs his first, full-length animated movie, produced by Sony Pictures Animation, from a script with the leitmotif of swapping roles. Here it is the monsters and their families who a seeking a holiday place to keep safe from human beings, and those monsters look more like misunderstood teenagers and thrashed by the captain of the rugby team and his henchmen from any secondary school than creatures devoted to spreading panic amongst humans. The storm breaks when an absent-minded human arrives at the hotel and young Mavis begins to feel great interest in him.
