Vmware Converter es una utilidad de Vmware que permite convertir, por ejemplo, backups de Acronis Trueimage a mquinas virtuales de Vmware. No obstante, Vmware Converter slo es compatible con Acronis True Image Home 10 y 11. Vmware Converter NO es compatible con Acronis True Image Home 2009, 2010 y 2011. Para que Vmware Converter sea compatible con Acronis True Image Home 2009, 2010 y 2011, ste (Acronis) debe tener instalado el "Plus pack" y/o Acronis Universal Restore. Es posible que Vmware Workstation, a partir de su versin 7, s permita abrir backups de Acronis True Image 2009, 2010 y 2011.

Si hemos utilizado Acronis TrueImage 2009, 2010 o 2011, sin el "plus pack" y/o "Universal Restore", existe una alternativa para emplear el backup para crear una mquina virtual. PROCEDIMIENTO 1. Crear una mquina virtual de Windows o Linux (lo que proceda) con un disco duro virtual del tamao adecuado. 2. Establecerle como unidad cdrom la iso del cd de arranque de acronis 3. Conectar por usb un dispositivo de almacenamiento que contenga el backup a emplear. Tambin vale tener configurada en la mquina virtual una carpeta compartida donde alojaremos el backup) 4. Arrancar la mquina virtual. Se iniciar as Acronis. Indicar ruta del backup (en el dispositivo de almacenamiento usb o en la carpeta compartida de red). Restaurar dicho backup. 5. Apagar la mquina virtual. (No reiniciarla) 6. Vmware Converter sobre la mquina virtual recin creada. 7. Arrancar la mquina virtual resultante de la aplicacin de Vmware Converter.

I experienced this same (frustrating) scenario when trying to convert an Acronis v10 Workstation tib to a vmdk. Since I still had a running physical machine, my solution was to drop back and punt by using Acronis v9 (not v10 or 11) to make the tib, then using the converter to make the vmdk. That said . . .

You mention, "The procedure that always works is to use Acronis to do the restore - and then use Converter in a second step to adjust the drivers." Only thing I can think of that might work (when there is no physical machine to make the vmdk with Converter) is to:

1) Boot the Acronis v10/v11 boot CD in a blank vmdk and restore the Acronis v10/v11 tib into that blank vmdk, then, 2) Do not boot into the new vmdk, but instead, 3) Use Converter's "Configure Machine" wizard to properly configure the new vmdk by making sure to select "Reconfigure destination virtual machine" and "Install VMware Tools on the destination VM" in the wizard's Options section.
