A compelling story lies behind this summers temporary exhibition: that of a young girl from the highest ranks of Florentine society who married the heir to a powerful family but who died tragically young. Furthermore, beneath the portrait of this young woman, Giovanna Tornabuoni, we nd another story, revealed through the work of the Museums restorers. Behind each and every one of the paintings in the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, which were the subject of a recent series of lectures, we encounter more good tales. This issue of Perspectives has aimed to convey something of all these accounts, if only their spirit. In addition, its pages include something of the stories of the numerous and varied individuals who participate in our Public Network programme and whose observations and experiences have encouraged new ways of looking at the Museums paintings. Seen in this light, a Museum is a mesh of interlinked stories, some predictable, others unexpected. Like a lm trailer, the aim of this issue is to encourage readers to pay a visit and nd a few more for themselves.

her social rank were given their jewels on the occasion of their wedding and wore them with pride. In addition, medals depicting couples were commissioned to commemorate marriages, as were costly works of art for the decoration of their private chambers. The exhibition brings together outstanding examples of such objects: jewels, medals depicting Giovanna and Lorenzo, and compositions whose iconography focuses on love, delity, beauty, and other virtues associated with marriage. It also includes ve of the important paintings that an inventory of 1498 records in Lorenzos chambers in the Palazzo Tornabuoni, specically in his beautiful chamera that housed the imposing Adoration of the Magi by Domenico Ghirlandaio (loaned by the Galleria degli Ufzi). The Book of Hours resting on the cupboard shelf behind Giovanna in the painting introduces the viewer to another concept that is examined in the exhibition, namely that of private devotion and the works of art associated with it. Books of Hours, paintings, reliefs and sculptures were commissioned to encourage devotion through prayer and meditation at home. Among the most popular subjects were those of the Virgin and Child, Adorations, images of the Passion of Christ, and hermit saints. The exhibition ends with a room devoted to the technical study recently undertaken by the Museums Restoration Department on the Portrait of Giovanna degli Albizzi Tornabuoni. It includes interesting material on the process involved in the creation of the work and the materials used.

exhibition Ghirlandaio and Renaissance Florence. The subject is also covered in the accompanying catalogue and on www. museothyssen.org. Given the importance of the study, it will also be the subject of a separate publication in the future. Ghirlandaios skills as a draughtsman were conrmed through the use of infra-red reectography, a technique that made it possible to see the preliminary version of the nal gure, which the painter corrected and modied in order to achieve the young Giovannas perfect prole. We also see changes to the position of the hand, an alteration to the hairstyle and another one to the necklace, which is ner in the denitive version. Overall, the composition comes remarkably close to the canons of the Golden Section or divine proportion that had been used since antiquity and which were considered the ideal measurements. Finally, X-radiography revealed subtle differences in the brushstroke, which is denser in the areas of the clothes and other materials and lighter and less heavily charged in the areas of the sitters body.

Conferencias

Lecture series, Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection Beneath the surface of every painting lie numerous stories regarding its creation, artist, period, previous owners, and more. Uncovering the stories that best help us to understand the work and to share it with the visiting public was the aim of the recently terminated lecture series on the Carmen ThyssenBornemisza Collection. The idea of monographic lectures on paintings by Vanvitelli, Constable, Corot, Monet, Gauguin and Picasso is one that was already successfully deployed last year with the series Portraits of Women, albeit with slight differences, including the involvement in this recent series of various members of the Museums curatorial team. Secondly, given that the subject comprised works from the Carmen ThyssenBornemisza Collection, the connecting thread for these lectures was the theme of landscape. Landscape constitutes a key axis in the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, which primarily comprises views paintings and depictions of the natural world. As Guillermo Paul Gauguin. Mata Mua (rase una Solana noted in his vez), 1892. Coleccin Carmen Thyssenpresentation of the series, Bornemisza, en depsito en el Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid / Mata Mua when we look more closely (In Olden Times) at the Baronesss collecting tastes we can appreciate her inclination towards a specic type of landscape painting, half-way between historical and naturalist landscape. More specically, this type of work could be described as the bucolic landscape in which human gures inhabit the natural world in harmony with it, evoking a lost Golden Age. This idea is particularly well expressed in paintings such as Corots Solitude or Gauguins Mata Mua. The aim of the series was also to look forward to some of the Museums forthcoming exhibition projects, including Architectural Backgrounds in Paintings, which will take place between 2011 and 2012, Journey to the Exotic, scheduled for the winter of 2012-2013, and Outdoors, to take place in 2013. The Museum considers it essential that initiatives of this type are repeated in the future. Their benets are evident not only in the extent to which they promote a better knowledge of the Museums collections, but also in the way that they bring the general public closer to the Museum.
