Johann Carl Friedrich Gauss fue un
destacado matemático alemán del siglo XIX.

coeficientes complejos tiene al menos
una raíz compleja. Gauss también hizo
importantes contribuciones a la teoría de
los números con su libro de 1801
Disquisitiones Arithmeticae (latín,
Investigaciones Aritméticas), que, entre
otras cosas, introdujo el símbolo de la
«triple barra» ≡ para la congruencia y lo
utilizó en una presentación limpia de la
aritmética modular
Teorema del número poligonal de Fermat
El teorema del número poligonal de Fermat dice que
cada número natural es la suma de a lo máximo N
números poligonales. Cada número natural puede
ser escrito como la suma de tres o menos números
triangulares, o cuatro o menos números cuadrados,
o cinco o menos números pentagonales, y así
sucesivamente. 17, por ejemplo, puede ser escrito
como sigue:
17 = 10 + 6 + 1 (números triangulares)
17 = 16 + 1 (números cuadrados)
17 = 12 + 5 (números pentagonales).

Astronomía
El 1 de enero de 1801, el astrónomo italiano
Giuseppe Piazzi descubrió el planeta enano
Ceres. Piazzi pudo rastrear a Ceres durante
