Note this word before you begi cosmetics: substances designed to beautify the body, especially the skin or hair The Dead Sea Advantage Its called the Dead Sea for good reason, No plants or fish live in this sea, and any fish that happen to accidentally swim into it are killed instantly. Even saltwater fish cannot live in the Dead Sea. The Dead Sea, which is actually a lake, is up to 10 times saltier than the ocean. Water drains into the lake from the Jordan River and other smaller streams, but no water drains out. As the hot des- ert sun causes the water to evaporate out of the lake, the salt that is Jeft behind accumulates, Because the water of the Dead Sea is so extremely salty, it draws water out of plants and the bodies of fish, killing them instantly. However, this same deadly quality offers healing benefits to us. Even in ancient times, people came to the Dead Sea for healing. Those with swelling and inflammation can find relief by soaking in the salty water, The same process that draws water from fish and plants draws water out of our bodies as well, reducing swelling and relieving pain. In addition to salt, the Dead Sea is also rich in a number of minerals that provide many benefits. ‘These minerals are especially helpful in relieving many skin conditions. Because of this, companies often gather minerals from the Dead Sea to make lotions and cosmet- ics. Legend says the great Egyptian queen Cleopatra wanted control of the Dead Sea for this reason. In spite of its deadly reputation, there’s much mote to the Dead Sea than meets the eye, Though it is bad news for fish, the Dead Sea offers relief to a number of suffering people. ‘© 2010-2015 Educational Ventures, nc. Note this word before you begin: epitaphs (ép'i- tifs’): words carved on tombstones in memory of the ones buried there During the time of the early church when many Christians were killed for their beliefs, the remaining Christians were comforted and encouraged by the hope of the resurrection. ‘They knew that their loved ones would one day rise again. Those Christians living in Rome displayed this faith in the resurrection through the use of the catacombs where they buried their dead. The Romans’ custom was to burn the bodies of their dead; how- ever, the Christians dug tombs into the soft rock outside the city to use for burial which, they believed, would preserve the bodies for the resurrection. ‘They even paid great sums of money to purchase the bodies of the martyrs from the government so that the bodies could be buried. The wealthy Christians who owned family tombs shared these tombs with the poorer Christians who had no place to bury their dead, Small graves were carved like shelves into the walls of these burial chambers. Altogether, the tunnels of these chambers stretched for hundreds of miles with millions buried in them. Though today we call these graves catacombs, the early Christians referred to them by the Greek word for “cemetery,” meaning “resting place.” ‘The Christians knew that the bodies of their loved ones were merely “sleeping” until the resurrection, ‘The epitaphs on the Christian graves were also much different from those of the unsaved Romans. Though there was sorrow in saying “good-bye” to their loved ones, the Christians wrote with great hope and joy as well. ‘Their loved ones were living forever with God in Heaven, and their bodies would one day rise again, In the midst of the suffering of persecution, the Christians were filled with hope and displayed this hope in the catacombs. They had God's promises that death was not the end. (©2010-2015 Edson Ventures, In Not tbe reproduced Escaneado con CamScanner 10 Circle the correct answer 1.
